Check the complete path, Microsoft digital signature, publisher, version and hash before you trust, quarantine or delete it.
If the file is genuine, update Windows and .NET and repair the application that launches it. If the path or signature is suspicious, run Microsoft Defender scans—use a full scan and then Microsoft Defender Offline if the problem persists—before attempting removal.

What EdmGen.exe does
EdmGen.exe is associated with Microsoft .NET Framework tooling. One sandbox observation recorded the executable at C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v4.0.30319EdmGen.exe. A separate file database also describes EdmGen.exe as a Windows/.NET-related file. Those observations identify a normal use for the name, not every file that happens to be called EdmGen.exe.

You may therefore see EdmGen.exe briefly in Task Manager while software is being installed, configured or repaired. A persistent process, repeated crash or unexplained CPU load needs investigation rather than an automatic deletion.

Is edmgen.exe safe?
There is no safe-or-malicious answer based on the filename alone. A threat listing recorded a sample named EdmGen.exe that GridinSoft Anti-Malware detected as Virus.Neshta. That demonstrates that malicious software can reuse the name; it does not show that the Microsoft Framework copy is infected.
Use all four checks below. A single result is not enough to establish authenticity.

Do not download a replacement EdmGen.exe from a random mirror. If the file is missing or damaged, repair the software through Windows Update, the .NET-supported installer or the application vendor’s installer.

What to record before changing anything
Capture enough detail to distinguish a broken application from a malicious file. Write down:
- The complete error message, including any hexadecimal code or module name.
- The executable path shown by Task Manager or the error dialog.
- The process publisher, product name, file version and signature status.
- When the error appears: at startup, when launching one application, during installation, or continuously in the background.
- Whether CPU, memory or disk usage rises, and which process is responsible.
- Recent events such as a Windows update, .NET installation, application update, driver change or newly installed program.
Take a screenshot if the message disappears quickly. Do not terminate or delete the file before recording its location and metadata; those details are often lost after cleanup.

Manual fixes, in the safest order
1. Isolate a suspicious copy
If EdmGen.exe is running from a user-writable folder, a temporary directory, a download folder or another location you did not expect, treat it as suspicious. Avoid signing in to sensitive accounts on that machine until you have completed a security check. If you must use another device to change passwords or review account activity, do so from a trusted device.
Do not open the executable to “test” it. Do not upload confidential files to an unapproved online scanner. Keep the original path and hash for your security records.

Microsoft documents four Windows Security scan choices: Quick, Full, Custom and Microsoft Defender Offline. Start with current protection updates and a Full scan when the file or its behavior is questionable.
- Open Start, type Windows Security, and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection updates and select Check for updates if that option is available.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and select Scan now.
- Leave the computer powered on until the scan completes. Review the detected-item name, path and action rather than approving an exception automatically.
A Quick scan checks common locations, while a Full scan examines the system more broadly and can take considerably longer. The scan result is evidence about the file on this computer; it is not a guarantee that every future copy with the same name is safe.
3. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the problem persists
Microsoft Defender Offline restarts Windows and scans before the normal Windows session loads. That makes it harder for persistent malware to hide behind a running process.

- Save open work and close applications.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan, then choose Scan now.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the scan. Do not interrupt the restart unless Windows reports a specific problem.
- After Windows starts again, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and read the action taken.
If Defender quarantines the file, leave it quarantined while you verify which application installed it. Restore a quarantined item only when you have confirmed the path, signature and publisher and understand why the detection could be a false positive.
4. Update Windows and the .NET Framework through Microsoft channels
When the copy is in the expected .NET Framework directory and carries a valid Microsoft signature, install pending Windows and .NET updates instead of replacing EdmGen.exe manually.
- Open Settings > Windows Update (on some Windows versions, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update).
- Select Check for updates and install applicable updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Run Windows Update again after the restart until no applicable update remains.
Use only Microsoft distribution channels or the supported installer supplied by the application that needs .NET. Avoid “DLL download” sites and replacement EXE files from mirrors; a tampered replacement can create a new security problem while leaving the original application broken.
5. Repair the application that invokes EdmGen.exe
Many errors attributed to a framework executable are actually caused by the program that called it. If the message appears only when one application starts, use that application’s repair or reinstall procedure.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows).
- Select the affected application and look for Advanced options > Repair, or use the application’s own installer and choose Repair when offered.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall the current version from the publisher’s trusted site or original media.
- Apply the application’s updates before testing EdmGen.exe again.
Back up application data and export settings before uninstalling. If the application is business-critical, check its documented .NET prerequisites first; removing a shared component without that information can affect other programs.

6. Check Windows component integrity if updates and application repair fail
Corrupted Windows components can produce missing-file, access-denied or startup errors. Run these built-in checks from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Open Start, type Terminal or Command Prompt, right-click the result and choose Run as administrator.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish. It may take time and can require Windows Update to obtain repair files. - Then run
sfc /scannowand wait until verification reaches 100 percent. - Restart Windows and test the application again.
These commands repair protected Windows components; they do not prove that an unexpected EdmGen.exe copy is safe. Continue to rely on the path, signature and malware-scan results for that decision.
7. Investigate startup and scheduled launches
If the process returns after you close it, identify what starts it rather than repeatedly ending the process.
- In Task Manager, open the Details tab, right-click the EdmGen.exe entry and choose Open file location. Record the path and command line if shown.
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable only an entry you can identify as the affected application. Do not disable Microsoft components at random.
- Check Task Scheduler for tasks whose action points to the suspicious path. Export the task details before disabling it.
- Run another Full scan after disabling an identified unwanted launch. If malware is detected, let Defender quarantine it rather than deleting random files by hand.
A legitimate .NET tool may be started by an installer or development workflow, so a recurring launch is not automatically malicious. The path, signer and parent application determine what to do.
8. Handle a suspected false positive
Security software can occasionally flag a legitimate framework file. First confirm that the file is in the expected .NET directory, signed by Microsoft, and installed as part of a known application. Record the detection name, file hash, path and security-product version. Microsoft provides a submission route for reviewing suspected false positives; use that route instead of distributing the file or adding a broad exclusion.
Do not create a permanent Defender exclusion merely to stop an alert. An exclusion can allow a genuinely altered file to run without inspection.
9. Decide whether deletion is appropriate
Do not delete EdmGen.exe simply because the name is unfamiliar. A genuine framework executable may be required by software, and manual deletion can turn a recoverable application error into a missing-component failure.
- Expected path, valid Microsoft signature, no malware detection: keep the file. Repair Windows, .NET or the invoking application if it is damaged.
- Unexpected path or invalid signature: quarantine it with updated security software and investigate the parent application.
- Security software identifies it as malware: follow the product’s quarantine or removal action, then run a Full scan and Microsoft Defender Offline when persistence is suspected.
- Confirmed corrupt framework installation: repair or reinstall through Microsoft-supported channels; do not copy an EXE from another computer.
Why edmgen.exe may use CPU or memory
First verify that the busy process is the same file you checked. In Task Manager, sort by the CPU, Memory or Disk column, right-click the process, and open its location. Note whether the usage is temporary during an install or remains high after the related application is closed.
Short-lived activity during a known operation
An installer, development tool or application repair can legitimately launch a .NET utility. Let the operation complete, then restart the application and check whether resource use returns to normal. Install pending updates before repeating the operation.
Continuous usage with an unexpected path
End the visible task only if Windows allows it, record the path and command line, and run a Full scan followed by Defender Offline if the process returns. Do not rely on CPU usage alone: a malicious file can be quiet, and a legitimate process can be busy during a valid task.
Repeated crashes or “not responding” messages
Capture the exact message and check whether the fault occurs in one application. Repair that application, run the DISM and SFC checks, restart Windows, and test again. If the error names a missing assembly, access denial or incompatible version, preserve the complete text for the application’s support team instead of deleting framework files.

Prevention and safe maintenance
- Download applications and updates only from trusted publishers or Microsoft channels.
- Keep Windows Security protection updates current and investigate Protection history after a detection.
- Uninstall software you no longer need, especially programs that repeatedly recreate an unknown executable.
- Keep a current backup before repairing or reinstalling an application.
- Record paths, signatures and hashes when troubleshooting so a support technician can examine the exact file.
- Do not assume that a familiar Windows filename is safe; verify the complete file identity every time.
