edc.exe is not a single, standard Windows component. The filename is used by legitimate printer and document-scanning software, point-of-sale applications, and malware. Whether a particular copy is safe depends on its complete file path, owning program, publisher, digital signature, hash and behavior—not on the name alone.
If Windows reports an edc.exe error, first identify the file and scan it. Repair the exact application that installed it, such as an HP, Samsung or Xerox document utility, rather than downloading a replacement executable from a generic DLL or EXE site. The steps below show how to verify the file, investigate common errors and decide safely whether it should be repaired or removed.

What edc.exe can be
Several unrelated products use the same executable name. HP MFP Scan, Samsung Easy Document Creator and Xerox Easy Document Creator can install an edc.exe component. The name has also appeared in Aloha POS software and in malicious samples. None of those programs shares a universal Windows file location or a common safety verdict.
That ambiguity explains why advice such as “edc.exe always belongs in System32” or “every edc.exe is a virus” is unreliable. A legitimate scanner utility may run from an OEM program folder under C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86), while a malicious file can be placed in a user profile, a temporary directory or another location. Even a file in a familiar folder still needs a signature and malware check.

Is edc.exe safe?
There is no filename-only answer. Treat the file as unverified until you know which application installed it and Windows Security or another trusted security process has found no threat. A recognized OEM path and a valid signature from the expected publisher are reassuring, but a missing signature is a warning rather than conclusive proof of malware. Conversely, a signed file can still be unwanted if the signature belongs to an unexpected publisher or the file was replaced after installation.

One documented malicious sample named edc.exe was associated with AgentTesla. Joe Sandbox marked the sample as malicious, and MalwareBazaar listed the SHA-256 hash 812b79890b4f2f12bbf6feda239d5daa55bb4870aef44cc01621a02f1fad4814 with malicious detections. That verdict applies to that exact hash, not to every file carrying the name edc.exe.
Identify the exact edc.exe before changing anything
- Open the process location. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. On the Details tab, locateedc.exe, right-click it and select Open file location. If it is not running, search File Explorer foredc.exeand record every copy. Note the complete path, filename casing, file size and creation or modification date. - Identify the parent application. In Task Manager, check which program launched the process and whether it starts only when you open a scanner, printer or point-of-sale utility. A path under an application you recognize is useful context, but it is not proof of safety.
- Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties and review Details and Digital Signatures. Open the signature details and confirm that Windows says the signature is valid. Record the publisher, product name and file version. An absent or unexpected signature should lead to a scan before you run the file again.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 'C:fullpathedc.exe'. Compare the result with a hash supplied by the software vendor or submit the hash to a reputable malware-analysis service under your organization’s policy. A hash-only lookup avoids uploading the file; never upload confidential documents or proprietary binaries without authorization. - Record the error exactly. Capture the wording, event time and application name from the dialog and Event Viewer. “The side-by-side configuration is incorrect,” “missing file” and “application error” point to different repair paths.
Scan an unknown or suspicious file
Microsoft recommends current, real-time protection as the best defense against malware and potentially unwanted software. Do not launch an unknown edc.exe merely to see what it does.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
- Choose Custom scan to scan the folder containing edc.exe, or choose Full scan for a broader check. Windows Security also offers Quick scan and Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Use the Offline scan when the file is highly suspicious, repeatedly returns after removal or may be hiding while Windows is running. Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans with the latest available definitions.
- If a threat is detected, choose quarantine or removal, then open Protection history to confirm the action. Do not restore the file simply because its name resembles a printer component.
If compromise is plausible, stop using the computer for sensitive logins, disconnect it from networks when practical and follow the incident-response process appropriate for the device. A work computer may need your administrator or security team; deleting one file is not a substitute for checking persistence, credentials and other affected systems.
Fix “side-by-side configuration is incorrect”
A documented HP MFP Scan case involved C:Program Files (x86)HPMFP ScanEDC.exe failing because the x86 Microsoft.VC90.ATL assembly, version 9.0.21022.8, was missing. The same message can have other causes, so confirm the dependency instead of installing random DLL files.
1. Capture the SideBySide event
- Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Filter or sort for events whose source is SideBySide at the time of the failure. Read the assembly name, processor architecture and version in the event details.
2. Trace the activation context with sxstrace
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run these commands one at a time:

sxstrace trace -logfile:%TEMP%sxstrace.etl- Reproduce the edc.exe launch error, then return to the Command Prompt.
sxstrace stoptracesxstrace parse -logfile:%TEMP%sxstrace.etl -outfile:%TEMP%sxstrace.txt- Open
%TEMP%sxstrace.txtand look for the missing assembly or runtime.
If the trace confirms that the HP package needs a supported x86 Visual C++ runtime, obtain that runtime through Microsoft or the printer manufacturer’s documented support channel. Install the architecture and version required by the application; a 64-bit runtime does not replace an x86 dependency.

- Close the scanner application and disconnect the device if the manufacturer’s instructions require it.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows), select the matching HP MFP Scan, Samsung Easy Document Creator or Xerox Easy Document Creator entry.
- Use Repair or Modify if offered. Otherwise uninstall the package, restart Windows and download the current package for the exact model from the manufacturer’s official support page.
- Install the package with the device disconnected if the vendor specifies that order, then reconnect and test scanning.
Do not copy EDC.exe or an ATL DLL from another computer. A copied file may have a different version, architecture or signature and can create a new security or compatibility problem.
Fix missing-file and application-start errors
When the message says that edc.exe cannot be found, cannot start or has stopped working, first decide whether the path is expected.

Known printer or scanner path
- Confirm that the path belongs to the exact device utility you use.
- Run the application’s repair option, or uninstall and reinstall the complete OEM package from the official support page for your model and Windows edition.
- Restart Windows, reconnect the device and test from the vendor application rather than double-clicking edc.exe directly.
- If the error returns, check Event Viewer for an application faulting module and verify that the required x86 or x64 runtime is installed.
Unexpected, newly created or unsigned path
- Do not launch the file again and do not add a Defender exclusion.
- Run a custom, full or Offline scan as described above.
- Quarantine a detected threat and review Protection history.
- After the system is clean, remove the associated unwanted program through Installed apps and inspect Task Manager’s Startup apps for an entry that recreates the file.
Potentially unwanted software can be bundled with downloads. Use official vendor installers and keep real-time protection enabled instead of accepting a download that promises to replace a missing executable.

An edc.exe crash is not automatically a malware event. It can result from a damaged installation, an incompatible device driver, a missing runtime, a disconnected scanner or a corrupted configuration.

- Reproduce the crash once and note whether it happens during device detection, scanning, saving a file or closing the program.
- Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the faulting application and module.
- Install the current device driver and application package for the exact model from the manufacturer. Do not use a generic edc.exe download as a substitute.
- Run Windows Update, restart and test with the device connected directly rather than through an unpowered hub.
- If only one Windows user profile is affected, test a new local profile. A profile-specific configuration problem can then be separated from a system-wide installation fault.
- If the crash began immediately after an update or installation, use the application’s repair option or uninstall and reinstall the affected package. Keep the installer until the test is complete.
Can you delete edc.exe?
Do not delete it based on the filename. Deleting a file inside a known scanner or printer folder can break that application and leave an incomplete installation. Instead, uninstall the owning application or use its repair option. If Windows Security identifies the exact file as malicious, allow quarantine or removal and then investigate how it arrived.
After a manual deletion, the application may recreate the file, fail to start or lose device functionality. If you already deleted it and the scanner stopped working, reinstall the complete OEM package rather than copying a replacement executable.
Why downloading a replacement edc.exe is unsafe
Generic EXE and DLL repositories cannot establish which product your computer needs, whether the file has been modified or which runtime dependencies it requires. A replacement with the same name can belong to a different vendor, use a different processor architecture or contain malware. Microsoft’s guidance is to obtain software from official sources and keep Defender protection current.
The safe replacement process is therefore: identify the owning application, remove or repair that application, and reinstall its complete package from the manufacturer’s official support page. If the path or publisher remains unexplained, treat the file as suspicious and scan it before any repair attempt.

What information to provide when asking for help
A useful support request includes the complete path, owning application and device model; Windows edition and architecture; file version and publisher; signature status; SHA-256 hash; exact error text; timestamp; relevant SideBySide or application event details; and the steps already attempted. Do not post a confidential executable or private documents. Sharing the hash and event text is usually safer than uploading the file.
There is no reliable prevalence figure showing how often edc.exe errors occur, because the filename covers unrelated software. A case-specific verdict requires the path, publisher, hash and behavior.
