Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) is Epic’s anti-cheat service, and Fortnite requires it. Linux support exists in principle: Epic added support for Windows games running through Wine or Proton in 2021. But that support is optional for each game, and Epic said its earlier Linux implementation could not provide the same protection as Windows. Fortnite therefore did not enable it. On October 14, 2026, Epic announced EAC Linux v2, with Fortnite planned as its first live pilot. The announcement does not include a firm release date or a Steam Deck commitment, so Fortnite is not officially playable on Linux merely because the new system has been announced.
What Easy Anti-Cheat does
Easy Anti-Cheat is an anti-cheat platform operated by Epic Online Services. A game integrates EAC so it can check the game environment, detect tampering and exploit tools, and send technical evidence to the game’s enforcement systems. It is not a game launcher, a Linux compatibility layer, or a file that can be installed independently to make an unsupported title work.

Fortnite’s Windows protection is broader than one EAC component. In a February 27, 2025 security update, Epic described a stack that includes:

- EAC’s kernel driver, active while the protected game runs;
- exploit-prevention measures;
- code hardening, which makes the game more difficult to analyze and modify;
- statistical analysis and machine-learning systems for suspicious activity; and
- technical evidence used to support bans.
For certain tournaments, Epic also required Windows players to enable TPM and Secure Boot. Those tournament rules illustrate why an anti-cheat decision can depend on firmware and operating-system integrity, not just whether the game launches.

Why Fortnite was blocked on Linux
Linux support and game enrollment are separate
Epic says EAC has supported native Linux game clients since 2014. That means a developer can build a Linux version of a game and integrate EAC into that native client. It does not mean every game using EAC automatically supports Linux.
On September 23, 2021, Epic added a route for Windows game builds running through Wine or Proton. Developers could activate that capability through the Epic Online Services Developer Portal. Activation remained a per-game choice. Each publisher had to decide whether its game’s security requirements were met and opt in separately.
Fortnite did not opt in. Epic’s October 14, 2026 explanation identifies the reason: the older Linux path offered less protection than the Windows implementation. For a competitive game with a large cheating threat, accepting a weaker security model was not considered equivalent to supporting Windows. Installing EAC files, enabling a Proton option, or copying an anti-cheat directory cannot change that server-side and developer-side decision.

Fortnite’s Windows approach can use a kernel driver together with platform security features. Linux has many distributions, kernels, boot configurations, firmware combinations, and security policies. A compatibility-layer game also has to pass checks while a Windows executable is running on top of Linux rather than as a native Linux binary.

That diversity is useful for users but makes it harder for a game to establish one predictable trust chain. Epic’s stated concern was not that Linux cannot run a game; it was that the previous EAC Linux implementation could not establish Windows-level protection across the environments it supported.
Does EAC work with Proton?
Yes, for games whose developers have enabled it and whose implementation accepts the user’s environment. Epic’s 2021 announcement specifically added support for Windows game builds running through Wine or Proton. The important qualification is “per game.” Proton support in the compatibility layer does not automatically enroll every EAC-protected title.

For that reason, a generic Proton setup is not a Fortnite solution. If Epic changes Fortnite’s supported-platform status, the game’s own launcher, service checks, and published requirements will be the authoritative indicators.
What EAC Linux v2 changes
Epic announced EAC Linux v2 on October 14, 2026 as a redesign intended to close the protection gap. It is not an equivalent Linux kernel anti-cheat driver. Epic says the system will rely on security facilities already provided by the Linux kernel, an anti-cheat systemd service, and eBPF programs. The service is intended to run only while a protected game is active.

The announced design depends on a trusted boot and kernel configuration. Epic listed these elements:

These are compatibility axes, not a guarantee that every distribution will pass. A distribution may support Secure Boot but use a key that a particular machine does not trust; a kernel may expose eBPF features while a local security policy disables them; and firmware settings can vary by motherboard or laptop.
Is Fortnite coming to Linux?
Epic says Fortnite is planned as the first live pilot for EAC Linux v2. The purpose of the pilot is to test the system in a real game environment and refine it before offering the implementation to more developers. Epic’s announcement says the pilot is planned for later in 2026, but it gives no firm public release date.

“Coming” therefore describes a plan, not an available download. Until Epic enables Fortnite and publishes a supported configuration, Linux users should treat the game as unsupported. A future pilot could also be limited by distribution, kernel, firmware, account, or device requirements; the announcement does not promise universal Linux compatibility.

Can Fortnite run on Steam Deck?
Do not infer Steam Deck support from the 2021 Wine/Proton announcement or from the EAC Linux v2 pilot. Epic’s EAC Linux v2 FAQ says the Steam Deck does not currently support the required features, while discussions with Valve are ongoing.
The Deck is a Linux-based device, but that does not mean it automatically has every security capability listed for EAC Linux v2. Its support would depend on the final boot chain, trusted keys, TPM-related checks, kernel configuration, and Epic’s explicit enrollment of the device. Until Epic and Valve announce otherwise, Fortnite should be considered unavailable on Steam Deck through an officially supported Linux path.

If you want to play Fortnite immediately
Use an officially supported platform listed by Epic. Epic’s current Fortnite EAC installation documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and states that EAC is required to play. The Windows procedure does not establish Linux support; it only ensures that the required Windows component is present on a supported Windows installation.

- Watch Fortnite’s official platform-status announcements. Do not rely on a Proton community report as proof that the game has been enabled.
- Check the machine’s firmware capabilities. Confirm whether TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are available, and whether Secure Boot can use the signing keys required by your distribution and kernel.
- Check the distribution and kernel configuration. The final requirements may include signed kernels and modules, measured boot, IOMMU, lockdown integrity mode, disabled
kexec, and BPF LSM support. - Keep a supported fallback. A second operating-system installation or another officially supported device may be necessary while the pilot is limited or while a Linux configuration is being validated.
- Use only the installer and checks Epic publishes. Avoid replacing kernels, disabling security controls, or installing unofficial anti-cheat services merely to make a launcher proceed; those changes can invalidate the trust checks the new system is designed to perform.
How to judge a future Linux or device announcement
When Epic publishes concrete implementation details, the useful questions will be narrower than “Does Proton support EAC?” Evaluate each distribution or device against the following checklist:
- Is Fortnite explicitly opted in, rather than merely using EAC?
- Does the firmware provide TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot?
- Are the kernel and modules signed with keys the machine trusts?
- Can the boot chain provide measured-boot data?
- Is IOMMU enabled and usable with the relevant hardware?
- Can kernel lockdown integrity mode run without conflicting with the distribution?
- Is
kexecdisabled for the protected session? - Is BPF LSM available and permitted by the kernel and security policy?
- Is the device, including Steam Deck if relevant, named as supported?
A “yes” to the first question is essential. Hardware and kernel features alone cannot enroll a game that Epic has not enabled.

Common misconceptions
“EAC is installed, so Fortnite should work.”
The EAC runtime is only one part of the arrangement. Fortnite must be opted in by Epic, and the environment must satisfy the game’s checks.
“Proton support means all EAC games are supported.”
Proton is the execution layer. EAC activation is a separate decision made for each game.

It is not. A workaround can depend on an unapproved configuration, fail after an update, or leave the account and game outside Epic’s supported conditions.
“Linux v2 installs a Linux anti-cheat driver.”
Epic says the opposite: EAC Linux v2 will not install or load an equivalent anti-cheat kernel module. It will use existing kernel security features, a temporary systemd service, and eBPF programs.
“Linux support automatically includes the Steam Deck.”
Epic’s current FAQ says the Deck does not support the required features, and Valve discussions are still ongoing. Device support must be announced separately.
