dullahan_host.exe is commonly associated with the Firestorm Viewer components named Firestorm-Releasex64, FirestormOS-Releasex64, or Firestorm-Release. It is usually found in a Firestorm llplugin folder under C:Program Files, although some installations place it in a user-profile directory.
The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe or malicious. File.net identifies it as a non-core Windows file and warns that malware can use the same name. Verify the complete path, publisher signature, user consent, and current Microsoft Defender scan results before deleting or replacing anything.

What dullahan_host.exe does
The name points to a helper executable used by Firestorm Viewer software. File.net lists Firestorm-Releasex64, FirestormOS-Releasex64, and Firestorm-Release as associated applications. Firestorm can place the executable in an llplugin directory inside its installation folder, commonly below C:Program Files; other installations may use a directory inside the Windows user profile.
Windows itself does not require dullahan_host.exe. It is not a Windows core file, so removing it does not repair Windows. If Firestorm is installed and uses the file, deleting it can prevent part of the application from starting or can produce a new error. If Firestorm is not installed, an unexpected copy deserves a closer inspection rather than an assumption that it is harmless.

The executable name is not a unique identity. A malicious program can be renamed to look like a known application component. Treat the name as a lead for verification, not as a security verdict.
Is dullahan_host.exe safe?
Safety depends on the particular copy on your computer. A file inside a known Firestorm installation, signed by the expected publisher, installed with your knowledge, and clean in a current scan is more consistent with a legitimate component. A file in a temporary or unrelated directory, with no trustworthy publisher information, unexplained persistence, or a Defender detection should be handled as suspicious.
| Check | More consistent with a legitimate copy | Reason for caution | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location | Firestorm’s installed application directory, including its llplugin folder |
Temporary, download, system, or otherwise unrelated directory | Record the complete path and investigate before changing the file |
| Publisher and signature | A valid digital signature from the publisher associated with the installed software | No publisher, an invalid signature, or a signer you cannot connect to the installation | Inspect Properties and do not trust an unsigned copy solely because its name looks familiar |
| Consent | You knowingly installed Firestorm and can account for the file | The program appeared without approval or resists normal removal | Review installed applications and recent downloads |
| Behavior | It starts when Firestorm starts and stops when the application closes | It launches independently, creates unexplained persistence, or interferes with security tools | Preserve details and continue with a Defender scan |
| Scan result | Current Microsoft Defender scans do not detect it | Defender detects the file or its behavior remains unexplained | Follow the detection workflow and consider an offline scan |
File.net gives the filename a roughly mid-range risk rating. That is a third-party heuristic, not a measured probability of infection and not a Microsoft determination. Use the evidence from your own file and system instead.

Why it appears in Task Manager
Firestorm may start helper processes while it is running, so seeing dullahan_host.exe in Task Manager can be normal when you have launched the viewer. The process name is not enough to establish that relationship. A process with the same name running when Firestorm is closed, or one that repeatedly returns after you terminate an application you did not install, needs additional checking.
Check the file’s real location
Do this before ending the process, deleting it, or downloading a replacement. The path is useful evidence, but it is not proof by itself because malware can be placed in a convincing directory.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Open the Details tab. Locate
dullahan_host.exe; you can sort by name to find it quickly. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location. If Windows offers more than one process with that name, inspect each one.
- Copy or write down the complete folder path and the file name. Compare it with the folder where Firestorm is actually installed. A path under the installed Firestorm directory is more plausible than a temporary or unrelated path, but continue with the other checks.
- Close the Explorer window without moving or deleting the file.
If Task Manager cannot open the location, the process may have ended, may be protected by another program, or may not correspond to a normal file on disk. Record that fact and proceed to a Defender scan rather than trying random downloads.

Inspect Properties and the digital signature
- In the folder opened from Task Manager, right-click
dullahan_host.exeand select Properties. - On the General tab, note the file size, creation or modification dates, and the displayed location. These details help you compare copies but do not authenticate the file.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists. Select a signature and choose Details. Windows should report whether the signature is valid and identify the signer.
- Compare the signer with the software you intentionally installed. An absent signature, an invalid signature, or an unfamiliar signer is a reason to investigate; it is not by itself a malware diagnosis.
- Do not use a search-engine result or a third-party download as a substitute for a signature check. Replacing one executable with an unverified copy can introduce a different threat or a version mismatch.
Microsoft distinguishes unknown software from confirmed malware. Its assessment considers factors such as concealment, unauthorized installation, misleading claims, and interference with security controls. Apply that distinction here: an unexplained file should be investigated, while a confirmed Defender detection should be handled as a security incident.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpdate Defender and run a full scan
Microsoft recommends current security intelligence and a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan when unwanted software is suspected. A quick scan may miss a file in another location, so use the full-scan option for this investigation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection updates, choose Check for updates. Allow the security-intelligence update to finish.
- Return to Virus & threat protection and select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan, then select Scan now. Leave the computer powered on until the scan completes.
- Open Protection history afterward and record any detection name, affected path, and action taken. Do not create an exclusion merely to make an alert disappear.
Keep real-time protection enabled while you investigate. Microsoft advises using a regularly updated antivirus product such as the Microsoft Defender Antivirus built into modern Windows versions. A clean result lowers concern but cannot authenticate a file whose publisher and installation history remain unknown.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when suspicion remains
If the process returns after removal, starts before normal applications, or behaves in a way that prevents security software from working, run an offline scan. Microsoft Defender Offline restarts Windows into a separate scanning environment, which can make it harder for persistent unwanted software to hide.
- Save open documents and close applications.
- In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now.
- Approve the restart. Windows will scan before the normal desktop loads and then restart again.
- After signing in, open Protection history to read the result and preserve the detection details.
Do not interrupt the restart unless Windows reports a problem. If the scan cannot run, note the exact message and use another trusted device to review Microsoft’s current recovery guidance rather than disabling security controls.

Update or remove Firestorm safely
If the path, signature, and scan results are consistent with a legitimate Firestorm component, use the application’s normal maintenance process. Do not delete dullahan_host.exe by itself while you still need Firestorm.
Best Value
Update an installation you still use
- Close Firestorm and confirm that its processes have exited.
- Obtain the current release from Firestorm’s official software distribution channel. Avoid repackaged installers and executable files offered by unrelated download sites.
- Install the update over the existing version if the installer provides that option.
- Recheck the file location and signature after installation, then launch Firestorm and test the action that previously produced the error.
Uninstall an installation you no longer want
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Windows 7 and 8 users can open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Find the Firestorm entry, select its menu or right-click it, and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the vendor’s uninstaller and restart Windows if requested.
- After restarting, check the former directory for leftover files. Remove leftovers only after confirming that no other application uses them and that you have preserved any logs needed for troubleshooting.
Normal uninstall is safer than manually deleting a process file because it removes the application registration and related components together. If Firestorm is absent from the installed-app list but the executable remains, treat the leftover as unexplained and finish the security checks before removing it.
Fix a dullahan_host.exe application error
There is no authoritative, canonical error-code list for this executable. The useful diagnosis is therefore the exact message, the path, the signature, and the scan result. Capture the text or a screenshot before dismissing the dialog; wording such as a missing file, access denial, or application fault points to different next steps.
If the file is legitimate and Firestorm alone fails
- Restart Windows once and reproduce the problem after launching Firestorm. A transient process or locked file can disappear after a restart.
- Check whether the error occurs only with one Firestorm feature or immediately at startup. Record the action, time, and whether the process remains in Task Manager.
- Update Firestorm through its official channel. An application update is preferable to copying a single executable from another computer because the helper must match the rest of the installation.
- If updating does not help, uninstall Firestorm using Windows’ installed-app controls, restart, and install a fresh official package. Preserve crash details before uninstalling if you may need support.
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu and inspect Windows Logs > Application around the failure time. Look for an event naming the failing application or module; use that information when seeking Firestorm-specific support.
If Windows reports access, persistence, or security problems
Do not grant broad administrator permissions, add a Defender exclusion, or disable real-time protection just to make the message disappear. Complete the full and offline scans first. A process that returns from an unrelated path or changes security settings without your approval should remain quarantined or removed according to Defender’s recommended action.

A missing-file message after manually deleting dullahan_host.exe usually means Firestorm still expects the component. Restore the application through an official update or a clean reinstall rather than downloading the executable alone. If you no longer need Firestorm, uninstall it normally instead of trying to satisfy the error by adding a standalone copy.
What to do when Defender detects the file
- Read the detection name and path in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
- Allow Defender to quarantine or remove the item according to its recommended action. Do not restore it simply because the filename resembles a Firestorm component.
- Run a full scan after the action and use Microsoft Defender Offline if the detection returns or the behavior continues.
- Keep the detection details, including the file path and alert name. If the result appears to be a false positive, submit the suspicious file or detection details to Microsoft for analysis through its official submission process rather than creating an exclusion casually.
- Change passwords from a separate, trusted device if you have evidence that the file captured credentials or that other accounts were affected. The executable name alone does not establish such theft, so do not assume it without evidence.
Can you delete dullahan_host.exe?
Do not delete it blindly. If Firestorm is installed and working, the file may be a required helper. If Defender has detected it, use Defender’s quarantine or removal action. If you have uninstalled Firestorm and confirmed that no other program uses the file, deleting the leftover through File Explorer may be reasonable after a restart and a final scan.
Before manual removal, verify the path one more time, keep a copy of any relevant detection information, and create a restore point if that option is available on your Windows edition. Never replace the file with one downloaded from an unverified site, and never use a filename search as proof that two executables are interchangeable.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the name: malware can copy a legitimate filename.
- Judging only by location: a malicious file can be placed in an application-looking folder.
- Deleting before recording evidence: removal can erase the path and details needed to identify what launched it.
- Using a random DLL or EXE download: the replacement may be malicious, outdated, or incompatible with Firestorm.
- Disabling protection: an exclusion can hide a real detection and does not fix an application error.
- Assuming a clean scan proves legitimacy: scanning is one signal; installation consent, signature, and behavior still matter.
