A typical installation is in C:Program Files (x86)IntelDriver and Support Assistant and is started by Windows’ services.exe. The filename alone is not proof that a copy is legitimate: verify its location, digital signature and installed application entry before trusting it.
If the service is damaged, reinstall or uninstall Intel Driver & Support Assistant through Windows. If a copy appears in a temporary or unrelated folder, lacks a valid Intel signature, or is associated with suspicious activity, scan it with Microsoft Defender before replacing or launching anything.

What DSAService.exe does
Intel Driver & Support Assistant is a Windows application that detects Intel hardware and helps find appropriate Intel driver updates. DSAService.exe is its background service component. Windows can start that service through the Service Control Manager, which is why Task Manager commonly shows services.exe as the process that launched it.

Intel describes Driver & Support Assistant as “a free downloadable application for computers running the Microsoft Windows* Operating System.” The service is intended to remain available in the background so the utility can perform detection and update-related tasks when you open its interface or when its configured components request them.

A running service does not, by itself, indicate a problem. It is expected when Intel DSA is installed. The important question is whether the particular executable is the one installed by Intel, rather than a malicious program using the same filename.
Why it may be running when you did not open Intel DSA
Services are designed to run independently of a visible app window. After Windows starts, the Intel DSA service can remain active even if you have not recently checked for drivers. That behavior is different from an unknown program launching from a temporary download folder. Check the file path and publisher rather than judging legitimacy from the fact that the process is always present.

C:Program Files (x86)IntelDriver and Support Assistant
A valid Intel digital signature and an entry for Intel Driver & Support Assistant in Windows’ installed-app list provide two independent indications that the file belongs to the utility. Neither check should be skipped when the process behaves unexpectedly.
Be cautious about any copy stored in a user profile, a temporary directory, a downloads folder, or an unrelated program directory. An unsigned file, a signature from a publisher other than Intel, duplicate copies in several unrelated locations, unexplained pop-ups, unusual network activity, or new system instability are reasons to stop and investigate. Do not download a replacement executable from a file-sharing site simply because its name matches.

These indicators work together. A familiar path is useful, but it should not override an invalid signature. Likewise, a valid-looking signature deserves additional checking if there are multiple copies outside the Intel directory.

1. Open the executable’s location from Task Manager
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Find
DSAService.exein the process list. If it is not immediately visible, use the Details view and look for the same filename. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location.
- Read the complete path in File Explorer. The expected Intel directory is
C:Program Files (x86)IntelDriver and Support Assistant.
Do not rely on a shortened name shown in Task Manager. File Explorer’s full path tells you whether the file is in the directory used by Intel DSA or merely borrowing its name.
2. Check the digital signature
- In the folder opened from Task Manager, right-click
DSAService.exeand select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details to check that Windows reports it as valid and identifies Intel as the signer.
An absent or invalid signature does not prove malware, because a damaged file or an unusual packaging method can also cause verification problems. It does mean you should not trust the executable until a security scan and installation check are complete.
3. Confirm the installation entry
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on current Windows versions.
- Search for Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
- Compare the presence of that entry with the file location and signature you just checked.
Intel documents this Installed apps route for removing DSA. If the executable exists but no Intel DSA entry is present, treat that mismatch as a reason to scan and investigate rather than as proof that the file is safe.
4. Review the process before ending it
Ending a background process can interrupt a driver check, but it does not repair a damaged installation and may not prevent Windows from starting the service again. Record the path, signature result and installed-app status first. If your goal is to stop the utility permanently, uninstall Intel DSA instead of repeatedly ending the process.

Service fails to start or stops immediately
A damaged installation, an incomplete update or a missing component can prevent the service from starting normally. Restart Windows once and check again. If the error returns and Intel DSA remains listed in Installed apps, reinstalling the utility is the appropriate repair path.

Windows reports that the file is missing
The installation may have been partially removed or damaged. Do not copy a same-named executable from another computer or an unofficial download. Use Intel’s current official support installer to repair the installation, or remove the remaining Intel DSA entry and restart if you no longer need the utility.
Repeated installer or uninstaller failures
These failures can leave an entry in Settings while files are missing, or leave files behind after an uninstall. Intel’s support guidance asks users who cannot install or uninstall DSA to provide screenshots and DSA log files. Capture the exact error, the Installed apps entry and the file path so support can distinguish a damaged package from a security problem.
High activity or instability
Unexpected CPU, disk or network activity is not enough to identify the cause. First verify the path and signature. If either is abnormal, scan with Microsoft Defender before trying to repair the installation. If both are normal, restart Windows and use Intel’s reinstall or uninstall route rather than deleting files manually.

Manual fixes, in the safest order
Fix 1: Restart Windows
- Save your work and choose Start > Power > Restart.
- After sign-in, wait for Windows to finish loading background services.
- Open Task Manager and check whether
DSAService.exenow starts normally. - If the same error appears, continue with verification and the installation repair steps below.
A restart clears a one-time service startup failure. It cannot correct an invalid signature or a file installed in the wrong directory, so do not treat a temporary improvement as proof of legitimacy.
Fix 2: Reinstall Intel Driver & Support Assistant
- Confirm that Intel Driver & Support Assistant is listed under Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Use Intel’s official support page to obtain the current DSA installer. Check that the download comes from Intel before opening it.
- Run the installer and allow it to repair or replace the existing installation.
- Restart Windows when the installation finishes.
- Repeat the path and digital-signature checks to confirm that the repaired executable is in the Intel DSA directory and signed by Intel.
Reinstalling is for a known Intel DSA installation that is damaged or incomplete. It is not a safe response to an unsigned copy in an unrelated directory; scan and quarantine that file first.
Fix 3: Uninstall DSA if you do not use it
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Intel Driver & Support Assistant, open its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager and the Intel installation directory after the restart. The service should no longer be present as part of the removed utility.
Uninstalling DSA does not remove the Intel drivers already installed on your computer. It removes the driver-assistance utility, so you can continue managing drivers through your PC maker, Windows or Intel’s manual download process.

Fix 4: Scan an abnormal or unsigned copy
- Do not open, replace or register the suspicious executable.
- Right-click the file and use the available Microsoft Defender scan option, or open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and start a scan.
- If Defender identifies a threat, follow its quarantine or removal instructions and restart Windows.
- Run another scan after the restart if symptoms continue.
Microsoft’s SmartScreen and Smart App Control protections are designed to help block fraudulent, malicious or untrusted applications. Keep those protections enabled, and do not bypass a warning merely because the filename resembles Intel’s service.
Fix 5: Gather information for Intel support
For a genuine Intel DSA installation that still cannot be installed, uninstalled or started, collect the information Intel requests:
- A screenshot of the exact error message.
- A screenshot of Settings > Apps > Installed apps showing the Intel DSA entry.
- The complete executable path from Task Manager.
- The DSA log files.
- The result shown in the file’s Digital Signatures tab.
Providing those details is more useful than deleting the service folder, which can leave an incomplete installation and make later repair harder.

There are two different meanings of “stop.” Ending the current process is temporary; Windows may start it again because the service is installed. Removing Intel DSA through Installed apps is the supported way to stop the utility permanently when you do not need it.
If you only need to interrupt a one-time driver check, save your work first, end the process from Task Manager, and then restart Windows. Do not delete DSAService.exe or disable unrelated Windows services. If the process returns with the same error, use the reinstall or uninstall procedure rather than repeated force-termination.

Dell SupportAssist is a separate Dell product for PC health, security and troubleshooting. Dell publishes its own installation and removal instructions for SupportAssist; those instructions do not repair Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
Use the publisher shown by the installed application and digital signature to decide which instructions apply. An Intel DSA path and Intel signature call for Intel’s repair or uninstall process. A Dell SupportAssist installation should be handled through Dell’s documentation instead. A filename database or third-party web page that labels the process differently is less authoritative than the actual path, signature and installed-app entry on your computer.
Driver-update choices after removing or repairing DSA
Intel DSA is a convenience utility, not a requirement for Windows to keep using an already installed driver. If you uninstall it, you can obtain driver packages manually from the computer manufacturer or Intel and install only packages intended for your hardware and Windows edition.
If you keep DSA, verify that the service remains in the Intel directory and signed by Intel after updates. Avoid running multiple driver-update utilities at the same time; overlapping scans or installers can make it harder to identify which program produced an error.
Security and privacy checks worth doing
- Keep Microsoft Defender, SmartScreen and Smart App Control protections enabled unless a documented administrator policy requires otherwise.
- Install Intel DSA only from Intel’s official support channel.
- Review the publisher and path after a repair or upgrade.
- Investigate pop-ups, unexplained network activity or instability instead of assuming they are normal service behavior.
- Quarantine an abnormal copy before attempting to reinstall a legitimate one.
- Restart after uninstalling or reinstalling so Windows can reload the service configuration cleanly.
These checks reduce the risk of replacing a suspicious file with another unverified copy and preserve useful evidence if you need support.
Optional shortcut

Verify those facts before trusting it. Restart a one-time failure, reinstall a damaged Intel DSA installation from Intel’s official support channel, or uninstall the utility if you do not need it. An unsigned or oddly located copy should be scanned with Microsoft Defender before any replacement is attempted, and Dell SupportAssist instructions should not be substituted for Intel’s.
