drwtsn32.exe is Microsoft Dr. Watson, a legacy postmortem debugger that records information when a Windows application crashes. It was included with Windows XP and older releases; Windows Vista and every later Windows version use Windows Error Reporting (WER) instead. On an old, supported installation, a copy in the Windows system directory with a valid Microsoft signature can be legitimate. On a modern PC, or when the file runs from a user, temporary or download folder, verify it before allowing it to run.
The practical fix depends on two questions: which Windows version you have and whether the fault is Dr. Watson itself or another program that crashed. The steps below verify the executable, explain Drwtsn32.log and user.dmp, repair a legacy configuration, and show what to do on Vista and newer systems.

What drwtsn32.exe does
Dr. Watson is a postmortem debugger. When an application terminates unexpectedly, it can capture the faulting process, exception information and other diagnostic data for later analysis. Microsoft describes it as a tool that captures debugging information after an application crash. The executable is commonly displayed as drwtsn32.exe.

Dr. Watson is not the application that caused the crash. It is the reporting and dump-collection component that was configured to start after the crash. A Dr. Watson dialog therefore often points to a problem in the crashed program, one of its libraries, or the operating system rather than proving that Dr. Watson is broken.

The handoff normally works like this: an application fails, Windows consults the postmortem-debugger registration, Dr. Watson starts with the process and exception identifiers, and the debugger writes a text report and, when enabled, a binary dump. If any link in that chain is wrong, you may see a debugger error even though the original program is the component that needs repair.
Microsoft’s Dr. Watson configuration guidance and current documentation state that Dr. Watson was included with Windows XP, while Windows Error Reporting replaced it in Windows Vista and later.
Which Windows versions should have it?
| Windows version | Expected crash-reporting component | What to do with drwtsn32.exe |
|---|---|---|
| Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and similar legacy releases | Dr. Watson can be the registered postmortem debugger. | Verify its path and signature, then repair its registration or the crashing application if necessary. |
| Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows 11 and later | Windows Error Reporting (WER). | Do not download Dr. Watson from a third-party site. Investigate WER and supported user-mode dump settings instead. |
A file with this name on a newer system may be a leftover from an old installation, software that bundled a copy, or malware using a familiar name. The filename alone cannot establish authenticity.
This version distinction is the first troubleshooting decision. A missing executable on XP can indicate damaged system files or a broken registration. The same missing name on Windows 10 or Windows 11 is usually irrelevant because those releases do not use Dr. Watson as their supported crash handler. Installing an old executable there can create compatibility and security problems instead of fixing the application crash.
Is drwtsn32.exe safe or a virus?
A legitimate copy on a legacy Windows installation is normally in the Windows system directory (usually the System32 directory) and carries a Microsoft digital signature. That does not make every file named drwtsn32.exe safe. Malware can use the same name, and a file in a different location needs investigation.
Check the complete path
- Open Task Manager if the process is running. On the Details tab, right-click
drwtsn32.exeand choose Open file location. If Task Manager shows only a shortened name, open the file’s properties from that location. - For a file found by Search, right-click it, choose Open file location, and record the full path. A user profile,
AppData, temporary directory, Downloads folder or an unfamiliar program directory is not an expected system location for the legacy debugger. - Do not delete or replace the file solely because its name looks unusual. First preserve the path and file details so a scan and signature check can identify what it is.
Verify the publisher signature
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
- Inspect the signer and the signature details. A valid Microsoft signature supports authenticity; a missing, invalid or unknown signature is a warning.
- Use the file’s Details tab to compare its description and version information with the Windows installation. Metadata can be forged, so treat it as supporting evidence rather than proof.
Scan the file and the computer
Run a current Microsoft Defender scan (or the current security product you already use) on the executable and then perform a broader scan if the location or behavior is suspicious. Keep the file quarantined while you investigate if your security software identifies it. Microsoft documents malware that creates files named drwtsn32.log and user.dmp; therefore, finding those names does not by itself prove that Dr. Watson is functioning normally or that the system is clean. See Microsoft’s malware encyclopedia entry for an example.
Red flags include a process launched from a writable user folder, a publisher other than Microsoft, a recently created copy on a current Windows release, repeated network or startup activity unrelated to crash reporting, and a security alert that returns after removal. These signs call for a full malware investigation, not a registry edit. Preserve the suspicious file’s location and alert details so a technician can correlate them with startup entries and scheduled tasks.

What Drwtsn32.log and user.dmp mean
Drwtsn32.log
Drwtsn32.log is a text file to which Dr. Watson appends crash reports. The newest entry is the latest captured crash. It normally includes the faulting process and exception details that can identify which application needs attention. The location is configurable in the Dr. Watson interface, so there is no single path that applies to every installation.
Because the file is appended, an old report can remain long after the original program has been repaired. Match the timestamp and application name to the popup you are investigating. Copy the relevant newest section before editing or clearing the log; support staff often need the exact exception text and faulting module.
user.dmp
user.dmp is a binary user-mode crash dump. A debugger can open it for deeper analysis than the text log provides. Dr. Watson’s settings determine where the dump is written and whether dump creation is enabled. A dump can be large; copy it to a safe diagnostic location before deleting it.

A dump may contain process memory, paths and other sensitive information. Share it only with a trusted vendor or technician and follow that party’s transfer instructions. If disk space is tight, archive the dump temporarily rather than repeatedly triggering the crashing program.

- Use the newest timestamped section of the log when correlating a popup with a crash. Do not assume an old entry describes the current failure.
If the configured folder does not exist, create or select a local destination that the affected account can write to. A path on a disconnected drive, a full volume or a folder with restrictive permissions can prevent both the log and dump from being created. Microsoft explains the configurable log and dump settings in its basic application-crash debugging article and its Dr. Watson configuration article.
How to fix drwtsn32.exe errors on Windows XP and other legacy systems
Use these steps in order. They separate a missing or unregistered debugger from the application that is actually crashing.
1. Confirm the operating system and executable path
Open Control Panel > System and note the Windows edition and service-pack level. Then locate drwtsn32.exe and record its full path. These repairs apply to legacy Windows versions that support Dr. Watson; they are not a reason to copy the executable onto Vista or a newer release.
2. Check signature and scan before changing configuration
Complete the path and signature checks above, then scan the file with current security software. If the scanner reports malware, follow its quarantine and cleanup instructions rather than registering the file. If the file is unsigned or stored outside the Windows system directory, obtain help from the security product or the computer vendor before proceeding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Open Dr. Watson and inspect its settings
Run drwtsn32.exe from the Run dialog or a command prompt. Confirm that the log and dump paths point to folders that exist and that the account can write to them. A path on a disconnected drive, a full disk or a folder with denied permissions can make crash reporting fail even when the executable is intact. Change the destinations to a local folder with sufficient free space if necessary, then reproduce the application crash once to see whether a new log entry is created.
4. Register Dr. Watson as the postmortem debugger
On supported legacy Windows versions, open a command prompt with an account that has administrative rights and run:
drwtsn32.exe -i
The -i switch registers Dr. Watson as the default debugger. Microsoft also documents the default AeDebug command as:
drwtsn32 -p %ld -e %ld -g
After registration, open Dr. Watson again and verify the paths. If the command is not recognized, the file is not in the expected system directory, or the operating system is not a supported legacy release, stop rather than downloading a replacement executable.

5. Verify the AeDebug registry values
The registration is stored under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionAeDebug
Before editing the registry, create a restore point where the operating system supports it and export the AeDebug key from Registry Editor. Check that the debugger value points to the legitimate system copy and that its command-line parameters are intact. A malformed value can produce repeated debugger errors or prevent crash reports from being created. Microsoft provides the supported disable and enable procedure in its Dr. Watson troubleshooting article. Do not guess at additional values or remove the key without a backup.

6. Read the newest log entry to identify the crashing program
Look for the application name, faulting module and exception information in the latest section of Drwtsn32.log. If the same application appears repeatedly, update, repair or reinstall that application from its original vendor, and remove recently installed plug-ins or add-ons one at a time. If the log identifies a shared Windows component, use trusted operating-system repair media or vendor support rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
Record whether the crash occurs at launch, during a particular action or only under a specific user account. That pattern helps distinguish an application defect from a damaged profile or permissions problem. Do not change several variables at once; otherwise you cannot tell which update or configuration change stopped the popup.
7. Repair the operating system when the executable is missing or corrupt
If the verified system copy is missing, fails its signature check because of corruption, or cannot start after registration, repair the legacy installation using trusted original Windows installation media or the computer manufacturer’s recovery process. Back up personal files first. A random “DLL fixer,” file archive or EXE-download site can supply a tampered file and create a second security problem.

Restart the computer, launch the program that previously failed, and check whether a fresh log entry is generated. Save the relevant log section and dump before clearing anything. If the popup continues but the log consistently names the same application, focus support requests on that application and the faulting module rather than repeatedly reinstalling Dr. Watson.
What to do on Windows Vista and later
Windows Vista and newer versions use WER instead of Dr. Watson. A missing drwtsn32.exe on these systems is therefore not normally a missing Windows component, and downloading one from the internet is not a supported repair.
Use Windows Error Reporting
Record the program name and faulting module shown in the crash dialog, Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer, then apply updates or repair the named application. WER stores crash information for diagnostics and can be configured with supported user-mode dump settings when a developer or support technician needs a binary dump. Microsoft’s Windows Error Reporting documentation is the appropriate reference for those settings.
On these versions, compare three things before taking action: the application named by WER, the module named in the event details, and the time of the failure. If all three line up repeatedly, troubleshoot that application first. If failures span unrelated programs, investigate recent driver, security-software or system changes and use Windows support tools rather than trying to restore Dr. Watson.
Investigate a legacy copy
If a file named drwtsn32.exe appears on Windows 10 or Windows 11, check its path, signature and scan result. Remove an untrusted copy only after preserving evidence and confirming that no legitimate legacy software depends on it. If it launches at startup, inspect the program’s startup entry and scheduled tasks, then allow your security software to handle any detected threat.
Why Dr. Watson keeps popping up
- A program crashes repeatedly: Dr. Watson is being invoked as designed; the application or a module it uses needs repair.
- The debugger is not registered correctly: AeDebug points to a missing file or has malformed parameters.
- The log or dump path is unusable: The destination does not exist, is full, disconnected or denies write access.
- The executable is counterfeit or damaged: The path, signature or scan result does not match a Microsoft system component.
- A modern Windows system contains a leftover copy: WER, not Dr. Watson, is the supported crash-reporting mechanism.
Use the newest log entry and the executable’s verified location to distinguish these cases. Repeatedly dismissing the dialog without identifying the faulting process leaves the underlying crash unresolved.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not judge safety from the filename alone or from the existence of
Drwtsn32.loganduser.dmp. - Do not register Dr. Watson on Vista or newer merely because a website tells you that the file is missing.
- Do not replace a system executable with a download from an unknown source.
- Do not delete the newest log or dump before saving it if you need technical support.
- Do not assume a successful Dr. Watson launch means the crashing application is fixed.
- Do not edit AeDebug without exporting the key and knowing how to restore it.
When the manual steps do not resolve the error
Escalate with the Windows version, service-pack level, full executable path, signature result, security-scan result, the newest Drwtsn32.log section and the name of any dump file. Include the exact popup text and the first date and time the problem appeared. This information lets a vendor or technician determine whether the fault belongs to the application, a shared module, the legacy debugger registration or a security incident.

Frequently asked questions
Is drwtsn32.exe part of Windows?
It is part of Windows XP and older releases that include Dr. Watson. Windows Vista and later use Windows Error Reporting instead, so the name is not a normal required component on those systems.
Where should a legitimate copy be?
On a legacy installation it is normally in the Windows system directory, commonly System32, and signed by Microsoft. Verify the exact path and signature rather than relying on the filename.
Can I delete drwtsn32.exe?
Do not delete a verified system copy simply to stop a popup. First determine whether the popup is caused by a crashing application, a bad registration or malware. On a modern system, preserve and scan an unexpected copy before removing it.
Why are Drwtsn32.log and user.dmp present?
They are normal Dr. Watson output when a legacy application crash is captured, but malware can also create files with those names. Their presence alone proves neither safety nor a functioning debugger.
What does drwtsn32.exe -i do?
On supported legacy Windows versions, -i registers Dr. Watson as the default postmortem debugger. It is not a repair command for Vista or newer systems.
Do I need administrator rights?
Use an account with administrative rights when registering Dr. Watson or changing machine-wide AeDebug settings. Reading a log may require less access, but the configured folder must be writable by the account running the crashing application.
What if the log names a DLL?
The named module is a lead, not automatic proof that the DLL itself is bad. Update or repair the application that loads it, use trusted operating-system repair media for a Windows component, and avoid downloading a replacement DLL from an unknown site.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I use a registry cleaner?
No. Export the AeDebug key before any deliberate change and use Microsoft’s documented values. Generic cleaners can remove or rewrite debugger settings without explaining the resulting crash behavior.
How do I fix the error on Windows 11?
Do not install Dr. Watson. Use WER details from Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer, update or repair the named application, and investigate any unexpected legacy copy by path, signature and security scan.
Best Value
What should I send to support?
Provide the Windows edition and service-pack level, exact executable path, signature and scan results, popup text, newest log section, dump filename and the time the failure began. These details help separate a debugger-registration issue from an application crash or security incident.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is drwtsn32.exe?
It is the executable for Microsoft Dr. Watson, a legacy postmortem debugger included with Windows XP and older releases. It records crash details; it is not usually the program that caused the crash.
Is drwtsn32.exe a virus?
A Microsoft-signed copy in the expected Windows system directory on a legacy installation can be legitimate. Verify the complete path, digital signature and a current security scan because malware can reuse the filename.
Where are Drwtsn32.log and user.dmp?
Their locations are configurable. Open Dr. Watson on a legacy system and read the Log File Path and Crash Dump fields. The newest section of the log corresponds to the latest captured crash.
Why does Dr. Watson keep appearing?
Usually an application is crashing repeatedly, but an invalid AeDebug registration, unusable log path, damaged executable or counterfeit copy can also trigger debugger errors. Check the latest log and the executable’s verified location.
Can I download drwtsn32.exe for Windows 10 or 11?
No. Vista and later use Windows Error Reporting. Do not obtain an old debugger executable from a third-party download site; investigate WER and the application named in its crash details instead.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs it safe to delete Drwtsn32.log?
You can clear it after saving the newest entry if you no longer need the evidence, but deleting it does not fix the crashing application. Preserve the log before requesting support.
What does user.dmp contain?
It is a binary user-mode crash dump that a debugger can analyze. It may be large and can contain sensitive process information, so store and share it carefully.
What is the default Dr. Watson debugger command?
Microsoft documents drwtsn32 -p %ld -e %ld -g as the default command in the AeDebug registration. Do not alter it without a backup and a clear troubleshooting reason.
The Bottom Line
drwtsn32.exe is legitimate Dr. Watson only when its Windows version, path, Microsoft signature and scan result agree. Use Dr. Watson-specific registration and log steps on XP-era systems; use Windows Error Reporting on Vista and newer. The newest crash entry usually identifies the application that actually needs repair, so avoid random EXE or DLL downloads.
