From a customer’s perspective, it is also best understood as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) application: users access a ready-made service rather than managing the servers that store their files.
Which category best describes Dropbox?
The right label depends on what a question is asking about. These terms describe different aspects of the Dropbox storage product, not mutually exclusive alternatives.

Why Dropbox is cloud storage and file synchronization
With local storage, files reside mainly on a device or drive. Cloud storage keeps files on provider-managed remote servers so that they can be reached over the internet from multiple approved devices. Dropbox also offers link and folder sharing, so people can access selected files without relying only on email attachments or physical transfers.
Synchronization is the process that helps keep a file or folder current across connected devices. Depending on the app and settings, users can work with selected files offline and sync changes after reconnecting. That synchronization is useful, but it does not by itself guarantee an independent backup.

Is Dropbox SaaS, IaaS, or PaaS?
Cloud services are commonly grouped into three models. The distinction is about what the customer receives and manages:
| Model | What the customer receives | Customer’s typical responsibility | How it relates to Dropbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| IaaS | Infrastructure such as virtualized servers, storage, and networking | Configure and manage operating systems, applications, and data | Dropbox relies on infrastructure, but ordinary customers do not rent and manage raw infrastructure through the Dropbox storage app. |
| PaaS | A managed platform for building and deploying applications | Build and run applications on the platform | Dropbox storage is not a typical PaaS example. |
| SaaS | A finished application accessed over the internet | Use the application and manage account content and settings | This is the most useful customer-facing classification for Dropbox. |
The Congressional Research Service lists online storage services such as Dropbox as SaaS ([Cloud Computing](https://www.congress.gov/crs_external_products/R/HTML/R46119.html)). Dropbox’s cloud-computing explainer, however, describes using Dropbox for file storage as IaaS and Dropbox Sign as SaaS ([What Is Cloud Computing and What Is the Cloud?](https://www.dropbox.com/en_GB/resources/what-is-the-cloud)).

The apparent disagreement comes from classifying different layers. Storage capacity and servers are infrastructure beneath the product. But a Dropbox customer generally signs in to a finished file-management application—with a user interface, synchronization, sharing, and other features—instead of configuring servers or storage volumes. That makes SaaS the more practical description of the product customers use, while IaaS can refer to the lower-level infrastructure involved.

For a quiz or classroom question, answer according to the wording: choose cloud storage when asked what Dropbox does, SaaS when asked for its service-delivery model, and cloud computing for the broad category. If a course labels online storage IaaS, it is using the infrastructure-layer interpretation.
Is Dropbox a public cloud?
For ordinary users, Dropbox is generally described as a public-cloud service: Dropbox operates the service and makes it available to customers over the internet. “Public” describes the service model, not whether users’ files are visible to the public. Accounts, permissions, and access controls determine who can reach shared content. Dropbox includes itself among public cloud services in its cloud explainer ([What Is Cloud Computing and What Is the Cloud?](https://www.dropbox.com/en_GB/resources/what-is-the-cloud)).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Dropbox a backup service?
Dropbox is primarily a storage and synchronization service, though some plans include computer backup and file-recovery features. Synchronization and backup are not identical: if a deletion or unwanted change synchronizes, it may affect copies on connected devices too. Version history and restoration tools can help, but their availability and recovery periods depend on the plan. Dropbox’s personal plan page lists backup and recovery-related features ([Dropbox Personal Plans](https://www.dropbox.com/individual)); its plan comparison describes differing restoration periods ([Dropbox Partner Plans Comparison](https://www.dropbox.com/partners/plans-comparison)).

For important files, consider keeping a separate backup that is not simply another synchronized copy. That can provide another recovery route after accidental deletion, account compromise, or unwanted changes.
What else can Dropbox be called?
“File hosting” is another reasonable, overlapping description because Dropbox stores files on remote servers and makes them available to users. It also supports shared folders, links, collaboration, and selected document workflows, so it can function as collaboration software. Those labels describe additional capabilities; cloud storage with file synchronization is more precise as a short description of its central role. Dropbox outlines its storage, sharing, and collaboration uses in its product overview ([What Is Dropbox and How Does It Work?](https://learn.dropbox.com/video-library/what-is-dropbox)).
How Dropbox differs from similar services
Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Box, and iCloud Drive are comparable cloud-storage or file-synchronization services. They are not identical: their integrations, sharing tools, storage limits, and ties to office or device ecosystems differ. Dropbox’s useful distinction is its folder-based workflow and cross-platform focus; the best fit depends on the applications and services a person already uses.
