It hosts a compiled BYOND game world so players can connect; it is not a Windows system process. A copy in the BYOND installation’s bin folder is normally consistent with a legitimate installation, but the filename alone cannot prove that an executable is safe. Verify its path, signature, hash and scan result before allowing it to run.
What dreamdaemon.exe does
BYOND (Build Your Own Net Dream) ships three core tools: Dream Maker for creating and compiling worlds, Dream Seeker for connecting to them, and Dream Daemon for running the server. DreamDaemon loads a compiled BYOND world and keeps the server process available for player connections. Release notes describing Windows Dream Daemon threading and map-sending work confirm that it performs game-server work rather than Windows maintenance.

One computer can legitimately have several DreamDaemon processes. A host may run more than one world, or a management application may start separate instances for separate servers. Seeing multiple processes is therefore not, by itself, evidence of malware.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit Program Files locations have been observed across BYOND 4.x and 5.x builds. A path under the BYOND directory is plausible, not conclusive: a malicious program can copy a trusted filename into an unrelated directory.
Is dreamdaemon.exe safe?
A genuine DreamDaemon from your BYOND installation is expected software when you host or administer a BYOND world. Safety depends on the particular file, however. Malware can be named dreamdaemon.exe, and a legitimate executable can be replaced or damaged.
Check the complete path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes or Details, right-click
dreamdaemon.exeand choose Open file location. - Confirm that the folder is the BYOND installation you recognize. Copies in
Downloads,%TEMP%, a user-profile subfolder, or an unrelated Windows directory should be treated as suspicious until verified.
Inspect the signature and publisher
- In the file’s folder, right-click
dreamdaemon.exeand select Properties. - Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is present, select the signer and choose Details.
- Check that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is consistent with the BYOND distribution you installed. An absent or invalid signature is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof of malware.
Compare a hash and scan the file
Obtain a trusted BYOND installer or update from the official BYOND distribution and compare the executable’s hash with the corresponding file when the build and architecture match. In PowerShell, run:

A hash comparison is meaningful only when the reference file is from the same BYOND build; different legitimate builds naturally produce different hashes. Run a current security scan as an additional check. Do not upload a potentially sensitive server binary or world files to an unknown scanner.

What to do with an unexpected copy
Do not launch an unfamiliar copy to “test” it. Disconnect the host from unneeded networks, preserve the file’s path and timestamps, and quarantine or scan it with your security software. If you believe the file was replaced, save relevant logs first and repair or reinstall BYOND from its official distribution rather than downloading a replacement executable from a “fix” website.
Why DreamDaemon errors happen
The same symptom can come from different layers. Identify where the failure occurs before changing files.

Version-specific defects documented by BYOND
BYOND release records show that some DreamDaemon failures are build-specific. A Windows reboot or second-startup crash was fixed in the 514 line. A later report describes an alist operation that could hang DreamDaemon indefinitely and says it was resolved in build 516.1672. Other official reports describe access violations in byondcore.dll, startup failures, and crashes while rebooting or deleting a world; in several cases a later BYOND build is identified as the resolution. These reports do not mean every crash has the same cause, but they make updating an important early step.
Capture evidence before changing anything
Repeatedly restarting can overwrite useful logs and make a world appear to fail in inconsistent ways. Capture the exact event first.

- Reproduce the failure once, if doing so is safe.
- Press Win+R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Find the event at the failure time. Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, Exception code, application version and timestamp.
- Copy the DreamDaemon and hosted-world logs before clearing, rotating or replacing them. Include the world revision and the action that preceded the crash.
The faulting module matters. An event naming dreamdaemon.exe points to the server process, while an event naming byondcore.dll or another dependency may indicate a runtime defect or damaged installation. The module is a clue, not a complete diagnosis.
Manual repair sequence
1. Verify that the process is the one you intend to run
Use Task Manager’s Open file location command and the signature/hash checks above. If the executable is outside the BYOND directory or fails verification, stop the server and investigate that copy before attempting software repair. Never replace a suspicious file with one downloaded from an unofficial DLL or “fix” site.
2. Update the complete BYOND installation
Check the BYOND release currently installed and install the current release through the official distribution. Update the complete BYOND package rather than copying only dreamdaemon.exe or one DLL. This preserves the matching runtime components and can include fixes for known DreamDaemon crashes and hangs. After updating, start the same world and repeat the exact operation that previously failed.
An update is the better first choice when the installation is otherwise intact because it normally preserves your worlds and configuration. Keep a backup of world files and configuration before any installer operation.

3. Isolate the hosted world
Determine whether the failure belongs to the BYOND runtime or to one world’s code/data:
- Start the smallest known-good compiled world with the same BYOND build.
- If the small world runs, launch the affected world without the latest code, map or data change.
- Test one operation at a time: startup, a player connection, world reboot, world deletion and sustained runtime.
- When one revision or operation reproduces the crash, revert that change or reduce it to a minimal test case.
A crash confined to one world or one data structure is more consistent with hosted-world code than with a damaged Windows installation. A crash across multiple worlds at the same stage points more strongly toward BYOND or its dependencies.
4. Repair dependency failures safely
Windows applications can stop running when a dependent DLL is removed, overwritten, upgraded incompatibly or otherwise conflicts with the program. If Event Viewer or a Windows dialog names a missing or conflicting DLL, repair or reinstall BYOND as a matched set. Do not download that DLL from a random repository: an incorrect build can create another dependency conflict, and an untrusted file can introduce malware.
If you have security or system-management software that recently quarantined or replaced a BYOND file, review its history and restore only a verified file from the official BYOND installer. Recheck the signature and hash after repair.
5. Use the hosting manager’s controls
If a manager such as tgstation-server launches DreamDaemon, use its service controls and logs instead of repeatedly killing the process in Task Manager. Its documentation states that stopping the Windows service normally terminates DreamDaemon. Stop the service, save its logs, update or repair BYOND, and start the service again. This gives you repeatable start/stop behavior and records the manager’s launch arguments.
When the manager reports a failure but direct DreamDaemon testing works, compare the manager’s configured executable path, world path, account permissions and arguments. Change one setting at a time so the next event identifies the effect.
6. Decide between update and reinstall

After a reinstall, do not copy an old executable or DLL over the new files. Restore worlds and configuration, then test with a minimal world before re-enabling all custom content.
Can you delete dreamdaemon.exe?
Do not delete it while a BYOND server is running, and do not remove it merely because it appears in Task Manager. Deleting the executable breaks the DreamDaemon component and will not repair a world-code or version bug.
- You still host BYOND worlds: leave the file in place and repair or update BYOND if it is damaged.
- You no longer use BYOND: stop all worlds and uninstall BYOND through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows), then remove only leftover folders you recognize.
- You found an unverified copy: quarantine or scan it, preserve evidence and investigate before deletion. Removing evidence can make a security incident harder to understand.
If Windows says the file is in use, stop the hosting service or DreamDaemon process through the manager that started it. Do not force-delete a file from a live server directory.
When the error keeps returning
Use a controlled comparison rather than changing several variables at once. Record the BYOND version, Windows version, world revision, executable path, faulting module, exception code, exact trigger and whether a minimal world reproduces it. Then classify the result:
- All worlds fail at startup: concentrate on BYOND version, installation integrity and dependencies.
- Only one world fails: bisect its recent code, map or data changes.
- Only reboot or deletion fails: test that operation with a minimal world and compare against a current BYOND build; those operations have appeared in documented bug reports.
- Only the service manager fails: compare its configured paths, permissions, arguments and service logs with a direct launch.
- Only one executable copy fails verification: do not substitute files manually; remove or quarantine the untrusted copy after preserving evidence.
If you still cannot isolate the cause, submit a focused report to the BYOND bug-report forum with the version numbers, Windows edition, world revision, reproduction steps, Event Viewer details and relevant logs. State what you observed rather than asserting that a particular component is responsible.
