DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) is the volatile working memory that holds data and instructions a computer is using. Each bit is stored as electrical charge in a tiny capacitor controlled by a transistor. Because that charge gradually leaks away, the memory system must refresh the cells while the computer is powered; switch off the power and the stored contents are lost.
What DRAM is—and how it stores a bit
A DRAM chip contains a very large array of memory cells. In the common one-transistor, one-capacitor design, the capacitor holds an electrical charge and the transistor acts as a controlled connection that lets the system access the cell. The charge state represents a bit of data. Samsung Semiconductor describes this cell structure in its DRAM glossary.
The capacitor is extremely small, so its charge does not remain unchanged indefinitely. DRAM is called dynamic because the memory system has to refresh its cells periodically to preserve their data. Refresh is routine memory maintenance, not the same thing as saving a file to storage.
Refresh timing depends on the particular memory device and operating mode. As one specifically bounded example, Micron Technology’s description of normal-mode, all-bank refresh for a 16Gb DDR5 SDRAM device gives an average interval of once every 3.9 microseconds and a refresh duration of 295 nanoseconds. Those figures describe that device and mode; they are not a universal refresh schedule for all DRAM. See Micron’s DDR5 SDRAM: New Features.

Why DRAM contents disappear when power is removed
DRAM is volatile: it needs power to retain its working data, including the refresh that counters charge loss. When power is removed, the stored charge is no longer maintained and the data disappears. Samsung Semiconductor summarizes this property in its DRAM glossary.
That makes DRAM useful as a computer’s temporary workspace, not as a place to keep files after shutdown. A computer can move data between DRAM and persistent storage, such as an SSD, but the two serve different roles: DRAM holds what the system is actively working with, while storage is designed to retain files without power.
Is DRAM the same as RAM?
Not exactly. RAM is the broad category of random-access working memory; DRAM is one type of RAM. DRAM is widely used for main memory because its cells can be packed at high density. SRAM is another type of RAM, commonly used for processor cache. Samsung characterizes SRAM as faster and DRAM as denser for main memory, though those are general design trade-offs rather than guarantees about every product.

| Term | What it means | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | A broad category of memory that allows data to be accessed by address. | Working memory; the term alone does not specify the memory technology. |
| DRAM | Dynamic RAM using charge-holding cells that need periodic refresh. | Common form of a computer’s main memory. |
| SRAM | Static RAM, a different RAM technology that does not use the same DRAM cell design. | Often used for processor cache; Samsung describes it as faster, while DRAM is denser for main memory. |

SDRAM, DDR, LPDDR, GDDR, and HBM: how the names fit
DRAM is a technology family, not a single kind of stick or chip. Product families are designed for different systems and workloads; their names do not mean that their modules can be swapped between devices.
- SDRAM means synchronous DRAM: its operations are timed in step with a system clock. Modern DRAM product families commonly use synchronous designs.
- DDR means double data rate. DDR memory transfers data on both the rising and falling edges of the clock. DDR generations such as DDR4 and DDR5 describe different memory standards.
- LPDDR is a low-power DRAM family used in products such as mobile devices.
- GDDR is a DRAM family used for graphics memory.
- HBM is a high-bandwidth memory family used in some accelerators and other specialized systems.
Samsung’s DRAM overview describes these families and their product contexts. The exact DRAM implementation and package depend on the device; a family name alone does not establish that a component is user-replaceable.

What DDR generation and speed labels mean
A DDR label identifies a generation or standard, not a universal module shape. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable: Micron states that DDR5 memory and DDR4 motherboards are physically and electrically incompatible. An upgrade therefore has to match the supported memory generation of the particular computer or motherboard, rather than just the label on a module. See Micron’s DDR5 DRAM page.
Speed markings can also mix two different units:
- MT/s means million transfers per second and describes the data transfer rate.
- MHz means million clock cycles per second and describes clock frequency.
Because DDR transfers data on both clock edges, transfer rate and clock frequency are related but are not the same measurement. Micron distinguishes MT/s from MHz on its DDR5 DRAM page. When comparing a specification or a module label, check which unit is being given instead of treating the numbers as interchangeable.

A memory module is an assembly that carries DRAM devices for use in a system. A DIMM is one module form, but desktop, laptop, and server memory can differ in their physical form and electrical requirements. Server modules, for example, include types such as RDIMMs; Micron’s RDIMM page describes that server-memory context.

Not all DRAM is supplied as a removable module. Some devices use memory packages integrated into the system, so a familiar memory family name does not by itself tell you whether the memory can be upgraded.
Before upgrading or replacing computer memory
For an actual upgrade, use the exact computer model or motherboard documentation. DDR4 and DDR5 platforms are incompatible, but the supported memory of any particular computer depends on its specifications. Check these details before choosing a module:
- Generation: confirm the system supports the module’s DDR generation.
- Form factor and module type: verify the physical format and any required type, including whether the system uses a desktop, laptop, or server module.
- Capacity support: check the maximum supported capacity and any per-slot limits in the device specifications.
- Transfer rate and timings: compare the system’s supported specifications with the module rating; read MT/s and MHz as different units.
- Replaceability: confirm that memory is socketed and serviceable rather than integrated into the device.
A module that does not match the system can be physically or electrically incompatible, or the computer may not support its capacity or rated speed. The manufacturer’s specifications for the exact device or motherboard are the authority for a purchase decision.
