dongle.exe is not a standard Windows component. It is a filename reused by different software vendors for license-key and USB-dongle utilities, so its safety depends on the exact file path, publisher, digital signature, hash and parent application. A legitimate copy normally belongs to software you intentionally installed. An unexpected copy in a temporary, Downloads, crack/keygen or random application-data folder should be scanned before it is opened.
Do not download a replacement dongle.exe from a generic EXE website. Identify which product owns the file, verify the file, then repair or reinstall that product and its matching license-key driver or runtime.

Why the name dongle.exe is ambiguous
Windows identifies an executable by its full path and metadata, not by its basename alone. Several unrelated products can therefore contain a file called dongle.exe. The examples below demonstrate why a filename-only verdict is unreliable.

Thales describes a Sentinel HL key as “a physical USB or ExpressCard key that connects to a computer, or a chip that is embedded in the computer.” Such a key is tied to protected software and its runtime. A random executable with the right name cannot substitute for the hardware, license data or vendor driver.

How to decide whether your copy is safe
Check where the file lives
In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and record the complete location shown on the General tab. A path inside the installed product’s directory is more consistent with legitimate software than a copy in %TEMP%, Downloads, a crack or keygen folder, or an unexplained directory under AppData. Location is evidence, not proof: malware can imitate a trusted directory.
Check publisher and signature
Open Properties > Digital Signatures, select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. The signer should match the application you installed. A missing, invalid or unrelated signature increases the risk, but some legitimate older utilities may be unsigned; verify those through the product vendor rather than assuming either safety or malware.
Record version and cryptographic hash
On Properties > Details, note the product name, file description, company, file version and copyright fields. To calculate a hash without opening the executable, run PowerShell:
Get-FileHash "C:fullpathdongle.exe" -Algorithm SHA256Compare the result only with a hash published for the same product version and distribution. The EPLAN SHA-256 value above applies to the identified sample; it is not a universal signature for all EPLAN releases or all files with this name.

Find what launches it
Open Task Manager > Startup apps and look for an entry that points to the file. Also check Settings > Apps > Startup, the product’s own startup options, and services.msc for a licensing service. If the startup entry names software you never installed, disable the entry temporarily, preserve the path and hash, and scan the file before deleting anything.
Scan the exact executable before troubleshooting
Use your organization’s current Windows security product or endpoint scanner on the identified file and its containing folder. Do not rely on a scan of a different copy downloaded from the internet. If the scanner flags the executable or the publisher is unknown:
- Do not run it again.
- Save the full path, signature status, version and SHA-256 hash for investigation.
- Quarantine it through the security product.
- Check installed applications and startup entries for the program that placed it.
- Change credentials only if your security team advises it after a broader incident review.
A clean result does not prove that an unknown file is the correct licensing component. It only means the scanner did not detect the threats covered by its current definitions.
Common reasons dongle.exe errors appear
- Missing or damaged installation: the protected application’s files, registry entries or licensing service are incomplete.
- Wrong product copy: an executable from another vendor was copied into the application directory.
- Missing dongle driver or runtime: the USB key is present, but Windows cannot communicate with it.
- Outdated driver: an older driver can fail on a newer Windows release or cause application instability.
- USB detection problems: the key is unlit, blinking, disconnected, attached through an unreliable hub or assigned to a virtual machine incorrectly.
- Service startup order: the licensing service starts before the low-level driver service.
- Operating-system or architecture incompatibility: the vendor’s component may not support the installed Windows edition, update or 32/64-bit environment.
- Security software interference: a policy may block an unsigned or old licensing component; verify the alert with the vendor before creating an exception.
- Corruption or unwanted modification: a file was altered, deleted or replaced outside the vendor’s installer.
Manual repair procedure
1. Identify the owning application
- Write down the exact error message and the time it appears.
- From the file’s Properties, copy the full path, publisher, signature status, version and hash.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features), find the application whose folder or startup entry contains the file.
- Check the application’s documentation for its required dongle model, driver, runtime and supported Windows versions.
If you cannot connect the file to software you intentionally installed, treat it as untrusted and complete the security scan before attempting repair.

2. Repair or reinstall from the original vendor
Use the application’s own Modify, Repair or Change option when available. If that fails, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install the current package downloaded from the software vendor or supplied by your organization. Do not copy dongle.exe from another computer or from a file-collection site; the executable may require matching DLLs, registry entries, services and license components.
Back up project files and export application settings before uninstalling. If the license is activated online, confirm the vendor’s deactivation or transfer procedure so that reinstalling does not consume another activation.
3. Install the matching Sentinel or HASP runtime when required
Some protected applications use Sentinel/HASP technology. Thales documentation identifies runtime components such as HASPLMS.EXE and HASPLMV.EXE; the license manager communicates through port 1947. The required runtime version depends on the protected application and the type of key, so install the version specified by that application’s vendor rather than the newest package by assumption.

- Obtain the runtime installer from the protected software vendor or its documented support channel.
- Install it with an administrator account, accepting any driver prompt that matches the vendor’s documentation.
- Restart Windows, reconnect the key directly to the computer, and test the application.
- If the vendor provides a local license-manager page or diagnostic utility, use it to confirm that the key is detected before launching the main program.
A Sentinel or HASP runtime cannot create a valid license when the physical key is absent, damaged or assigned to another product.

4. Reinstall a missing USB-key driver using the vendor’s instructions
Driver packages differ by product. Teklynx’s documented example for a HASP key is to download the latest HASP drivers, open an elevated Command Prompt, change to the folder containing haspdinst.exe, and run:
haspdinst -i -kp -ldThat command is an example for the package it documents, not a universal command for every dongle. Use it only when the driver vendor gives the same instruction and executable. After installation, restart Windows, reconnect the key, and check Device Manager for warning icons under the relevant USB, security-device or universal-serial-bus category.
5. Rule out USB and physical-key problems
- Connect the key directly to a different USB port, avoiding an unpowered hub or docking station for the test.
- Check whether its LED is unlit, steady or blinking and compare that behavior with the vendor’s manual.
- Test the key on a second authorized computer only if the license terms permit it.
- In Device Manager, choose View > Show hidden devices, remove only clearly stale entries identified by the vendor, then scan for hardware changes.
- Install Windows updates that the protected application supports, but do not upgrade the operating system during a production deadline without checking compatibility.
FactSage lists an unlit or blinking dongle LED, failure to start the Aladdin device driver, registry-access error 0x2010000 0x0, and unsupported-operating-system messages as symptoms associated with driver or compatibility trouble.
6. Correct licensing-service startup order
Open services.msc and identify the application’s licensing service and its driver service. Do not change dependencies without the vendor’s instructions. Siemens documents a COMOS case in which ComosLSService must depend on the Hardlock service because the license service can start too early.
When the vendor supplies a dependency procedure, apply it exactly, restart Windows and check the service status. If the service repeatedly stops, collect its Event Viewer entries and contact the vendor instead of repeatedly forcing it to start.
7. Check virtual-machine placement
A USB key passed through to a virtual machine must have its driver installed inside the guest operating system where the protected application runs. Installing the driver only on the host does not make the key available to the guest. Confirm that the virtualization platform presents the key exclusively to the intended machine, that the guest’s Windows version is supported, and that licensing terms allow virtual use.
8. Review security-software blocks carefully
If Windows Security or an endpoint product blocks the file, record the detection name and hash and submit the file to the application vendor for confirmation. Do not create a broad exclusion for an unknown executable. If the file is verified as the vendor’s signed component and the vendor supplies a narrow exclusion or certificate rule, apply only that documented rule and keep real-time protection enabled.

Can you download a replacement dongle.exe?
There is no safe universal replacement. A file that matches the name may belong to a different product, require different DLLs, or contain unwanted code. It also cannot reproduce a Sentinel, HASP or other physical license key. Replace the file only by running the official installer or repair package for the application that owns it. If the vendor provides a standalone Dongle.exe utility, verify its release, signature and installation instructions before running it.
What to send the software vendor
Support can resolve licensing errors faster when the report is precise. Include:

- Record the working driver/runtime version before changing a production computer.
- Do not share or email license executables outside your organization.
- Use a direct USB connection while diagnosing detection problems.
- Maintain current endpoint protection and review alerts rather than blindly allowing old licensing files.
- Before a Windows upgrade or virtual-machine migration, confirm support with the protected-application vendor.
