What Is DNSSEC and How Does It Work?

DNSSEC signs DNS data so validating resolvers can detect forged or altered answers. Here is how the chain of trust works, who publishes each record, and how to avoid migration failures.

DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) adds cryptographic signatures to DNS data. A validating resolver checks those signatures and follows a chain from a trusted root key through parent and child zones. This lets it detect forged or altered DNS answers. DNSSEC does not encrypt DNS queries or hide the domains users look up.

What DNSSEC protects

Ordinary DNS answers can be altered in transit or forged by an attacker. DNSSEC lets a resolver verify that a response came from the signed zone and was not modified. ICANN describes the mechanism as digitally signing each DNS record so tampering can be detected (ICANN).

DNSSEC protects the authenticity and integrity of DNS data, including authenticated answers that a name does not exist. It does not protect the web page or service behind a hostname; HTTPS is still required for that.

How the DNSSEC chain of trust works

  1. The zone publishes keys. An authoritative zone publishes a DNSKEY record containing public-key material. RRSIG records contain signatures over DNS record sets.
  2. The parent publishes a DS record. The parent zone publishes a DS record derived from the child zone’s DNSKEY. That DS record is the parent’s verifiable reference to the child key.
  3. The resolver starts at a trust anchor. A validating recursive resolver normally begins with the root zone’s trusted key, then verifies each parent-to-child link.
  4. The answer is checked. The resolver verifies the RRSIG covering the requested record and returns the data only when the signatures and chain validate. A failed validation is generally reported as a resolution error rather than silently accepted.

The root zone has been signed since 2010, according to ICANN. The protocol and its core DNSSEC specifications are summarized in RFC 9364.

Records involved

Record Purpose
DNSKEY Publishes a zone’s public keys.
RRSIG Signs a DNS record set.
DS Published by the parent; links the parent’s chain to a child DNSKEY.
NSEC or NSEC3 Provides authenticated denial of existence when a name or record is absent.

Who has to do what?

Participant Responsibility
Authoritative DNS provider Signs the zone, creates and rotates keys, and serves DNSKEY, RRSIG and related records.
Registrar and registry Accept and publish the child zone’s DS record for the specific domain and TLD.
Recursive resolver Validate the chain and signatures before returning an answer to the client.

Signing a zone alone is not enough. If the DS record is missing or wrong, or if the resolver does not perform validation, users do not receive the full protection. Google Cloud’s overview explains this separation of signing, DS publication and validation (Google Cloud).

What DNSSEC does not do

  • It does not encrypt DNS. Queries remain observable unless a separate privacy technology such as encrypted DNS is used.
  • It does not hide lookups. A resolver or network observer may still learn which domain is being queried.
  • It does not authenticate website content. Use HTTPS and certificate validation for the destination service.
  • It does not work automatically everywhere. The authoritative host, registrar, registry and validating resolver must support and correctly coordinate the deployment.

Google Cloud explicitly notes that DNSSEC authenticates lookup responses but does not provide privacy for those lookups (Google Cloud).

How to enable DNSSEC for a domain

The labels and available automation differ by provider and TLD, but the dependency order is consistent:

  1. Confirm support. Check that the authoritative DNS service signs zones and that the registrar and registry support DNSSEC and DS records for your exact TLD.
  2. Enable signing at the authoritative provider. Record the resulting DS values (key tag, algorithm, digest type and digest, where required).
  3. Publish the DS at the registrar. Enter the provider’s values or use the registrar’s supported automation. Cloudflare says it publishes CDS and CDNSKEY records when DNSSEC is enabled; registrars supporting RFC 8078 may use them to update DS data automatically (Cloudflare).
  4. Check validation. Query the domain with a DNSSEC-validating resolver and inspect that the chain reaches the root without an error.
  5. Monitor key changes. Keep registrar DS data synchronized when keys are replaced or the DNS provider changes.

Google Cloud warns that enabling DNSSEC only in a DNS zone has no effect when the DS record cannot be added through the registrar (Google Cloud).

DNSSEC during a nameserver migration

Plan DNSSEC together with a DNS host change. A DS record at the registrar identifies the old provider’s key. If the domain is switched to a provider using different keys while that DS remains, validating resolvers can reject the new provider’s answers.

Cloudflare’s general onboarding guidance says to disable DNSSEC at the registrar before changing nameservers and then enable it again with the new provider, but the safe sequence depends on the old host, new host, registrar and TLD. Follow the migration procedure those parties document rather than deleting DS records blindly (Cloudflare). Where supported, coordinated multi-signer DNSSEC can allow a transition without a validation gap. Cloudflare documents key-management and validation considerations at its validation and keys guide.

Diagnosing a DNSSEC failure

  • Names fail only for some users: compare a validating resolver with a non-validating one; a broken chain often affects validating resolvers first.
  • Failure began after a DNS change: compare the registrar’s DS record with the active provider’s DNSKEY and check for stale data.
  • The zone is signed but validation is insecure: verify that the parent DS was actually published and that the TLD permits it.
  • Key rotation causes outages: confirm that the provider’s rollover process and registrar updates completed before old keys were removed.

Do not remove a DS record as a generic fix: doing so changes the domain’s validation state and may hide an incomplete migration. Establish which provider is authoritative and which keys the registrar currently publishes before changing anything.

What to compare when choosing a DNSSEC setup

Question Why it matters
Does the provider sign zones and manage key rotation? Manual key handling increases the chance of an expired or mismatched chain.
Does your registrar and TLD accept DS records? Without parent-side publication, signatures cannot form a trusted chain.
Are CDS/CDNSKEY updates automated? Automation can reduce manual DS-entry errors, but only when the registrar supports the relevant workflow.
How is migration handled? Look for documented rollover, multi-signer or other transition procedures that match your providers.

RFC 9364 notes that deployment levels alone do not establish whether DNSSEC is appropriate for every operator; weigh its integrity benefits against the operational cost for your environment (IETF RFC 9364).
