dnscryptproxy.exe is the Windows executable for dnscrypt-proxy, the DNSCrypt project’s reference client. It accepts DNS requests from your computer, sends them to a configured resolver through encrypted and authenticated DNS, and returns the answers to Windows applications. The file is normally safe when it came from the official DNSCrypt project or its official release repository. A copy from a torrent, random download page, or an unexpected folder is not automatically trustworthy.

Most Windows failures are practical rather than mysterious: the program was started without administrator rights, its configuration does not parse, the selected resolver is unavailable, another service already owns its local DNS port, or Windows’ connectivity test cannot work through a local DNS proxy. The sections below explain how to verify the executable, install it, test it, repair common errors, and remove or upgrade it safely.

What dnscryptproxy.exe is and why it is running

DNS is the lookup system that turns a name such as example.com into an IP address. Normally, Windows sends those lookups to the DNS servers supplied by your router, internet provider, VPN, or manually chosen network settings. When dnscrypt-proxy is configured as a local proxy, applications send their requests to the computer itself instead. The executable then forwards each request to a configured upstream resolver and passes the response back to the requesting application.

On Windows, the process has no normal graphical control panel. The project’s Windows documentation describes command-line configuration and operation as a Windows service. Seeing dnscryptproxy.exe in Task Manager therefore does not by itself indicate malware or a failed installation; it may simply be the background service handling DNS for the machine.

What the client does

  • Receives DNS queries on a local address and port.
  • Encrypts and authenticates traffic to a compatible resolver.
  • Supports DNS-over-HTTPS in addition to DNSCrypt protocols.
  • Can cache answers locally and update its resolver list.
  • Can distribute requests among resolvers when configured for load balancing.
  • Works with DNSSEC-capable resolution.
  • Offers query monitoring and filtering for ads, malware, and other unwanted content when those options and resolver lists are configured.
  • Provides Windows binaries as well as builds for other operating systems.

Those are capabilities documented by the project, not a promise that every resolver has the same availability, filtering behavior, logging policy, or privacy characteristics. Your selected resolver still matters: encrypted transport protects the path between the proxy and resolver, while the resolver remains the party processing the query.

Why it uses your DNS

Using DNS is the program’s entire purpose. If the network adapter points to 127.0.0.1 for IPv4, Windows deliberately sends lookups to the local proxy. With IPv6 enabled, the documented loopback equivalent is ::1. The proxy then chooses the upstream resolver specified in its configuration. A DNS request appearing in the process’s activity is therefore expected behavior, not evidence that it is hijacking unrelated traffic.

Is dnscryptproxy.exe safe?

An authentic build from the DNSCrypt project is legitimate open-source networking software. Safety depends heavily on provenance. The project has warned that fake Windows DNSCrypt packages have been distributed with malware or potentially unwanted programs. The filename alone is not an authenticity check because another program can copy the same name.

How to check a copy you already have

  1. Inspect the path. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. A location inside the folder where you intentionally extracted the official release is consistent with a normal installation. A copy in a temporary download directory, a user profile subfolder you do not recognize, or a randomly named system-looking directory deserves investigation.
  2. Establish where it came from. The safe distribution channels are the DNSCrypt project’s own site and its official GitHub release repository. Treat torrents, “cracked” bundles, random driver or codec pages, and links embedded in videos as untrusted distribution channels.
  3. Check release-verification information. Use the verification instructions published with the project release. If Windows exposes a digital-signature tab in the file’s Properties dialog, inspect it, but do not treat the presence of a signature as a substitute for obtaining the package from an official source.
  4. Scan the file. Run your installed antivirus or Windows security scanner against the executable and the extracted archive. A clean scan is useful evidence, not proof that an unofficial package is genuine.
  5. Compare with a clean download. If the origin is uncertain, do not keep troubleshooting that copy. Quarantine it, investigate any service or startup entry that launches it, and replace it with a freshly downloaded official build.

Warning signs that need investigation

  • You never installed DNSCrypt and cannot identify who did.
  • The file arrived inside a torrent, unofficial repack, or “fix” utility.
  • It runs from an unexpected directory or has a random companion executable.
  • Its service name, command line, or network behavior does not match the configuration you intended.
  • Security software reports malware or a potentially unwanted program.

Do not delete a suspicious executable while it is still running and then assume the problem is solved. First disconnect or quarantine it using your security software, record the service and startup entries that reference it, and obtain a clean package before rebuilding the configuration.

How dnscrypt-proxy handles a DNS request

  1. An application asks Windows to resolve a hostname.
  2. The network adapter sends the request to the local address configured for the proxy, normally 127.0.0.1 for IPv4.
  3. dnscryptproxy.exe reads its configuration and selects an enabled resolver.
  4. The request travels to that resolver over an encrypted, authenticated protocol, or over DNS-over-HTTPS when configured.
  5. The answer returns to the local proxy, which may cache it and then replies to the application.

This design changes the trust and failure points rather than eliminating them. You must trust the resolver’s policy and availability, maintain a valid local configuration, and keep the proxy listening on a port that no other DNS service has claimed. Filtering, caching, resolver updates, monitoring, and load balancing are optional features that depend on configuration and resolver support.

Install and configure it on Windows

Before you begin

  • Use an official Windows ZIP package from the DNSCrypt project or its official release repository.
  • Keep the extracted folder in a location you can identify and protect from accidental deletion.
  • Have an administrator account available; service installation and some network changes require elevation.
  • Know whether another VPN, security suite, DNS filter, virtualization product, or local DNS service is already listening on the port you intend to use.
  • Keep a copy of the original configuration before making changes.

Extract and edit the configuration

  1. Extract the official archive rather than running an executable directly from inside a compressed file.
  2. Open the supplied configuration file, commonly named dnscrypt-proxy.conf, in a text editor.
  3. Choose an enabled resolver from the project’s current resolver list and set the filtering, caching, monitoring, and protocol options you actually need. A resolver list entry can become unavailable, so avoid assuming that one endpoint will work forever.
  4. Save the file in the same folder as the executable unless the configuration explicitly uses another path. Preserve the file extension and plain-text format.

Test before installing a service

Open Command Prompt or PowerShell as Administrator, change to the extracted folder, and run the executable with the configuration file before installing anything as a service. A typical command is:

dnscrypt-proxy.exe -config dnscrypt-proxy.conf

Use the output and log messages as the first diagnostic. A successful test should leave the proxy running without a configuration-parse error and should show that it can reach the selected resolver. Stop the test process after checking it. If the configuration fails, correct that failure before attempting service installation; otherwise a service error can hide the original cause.

Install and point Windows at the proxy

  1. From the elevated prompt in the program folder, install the service with dnscrypt-proxy.exe --install-with-config-file=dnscrypt-proxy.conf.
  2. Start the installed service using the normal Windows Services console if it is not already running. Confirm that the service points to the configuration file you tested.
  3. Open Settings and the network adapter’s IPv4 DNS properties. Set the preferred DNS server to 127.0.0.1. If you intentionally use IPv6, set the adapter’s DNS address to the documented IPv6 loopback value, ::1, as appropriate for your configuration.
  4. Apply the change, open a new browser session, and test several sites. Check the proxy log for successful queries rather than relying only on a browser result.

Do not point the adapter at the local proxy until the service is running and listening. Otherwise every application will send DNS requests to a port with no responder, which looks like a complete internet outage.

Fix common dnscrypt-proxy errors

“Access is denied” or service installation fails

Service registration and some network operations require elevation. Close the current shell, search for Command Prompt or PowerShell, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, return to the extracted folder, and retry the documented install command. Also check that the folder and configuration file are readable by the account running the service. If the service was created under a different account or with an incorrect path, remove that registration and install it again from the tested folder.

WSAEADDRINUSE or a bind error

This Windows message means the UDP address or port selected by the proxy is already in use. Typical competitors include another DNS proxy, a VPN component, a security product, or a second copy of dnscrypt-proxy. First stop the duplicate process or service and retry. If the other service must remain, choose a non-conflicting listening configuration and update the adapter DNS address to match. Do not run two programs on the same local DNS endpoint and expect Windows to choose correctly between them.

Configuration parsing or resolver failure

  1. Run the executable manually with the configuration file instead of installing the service again.
  2. Read the first error in the console or log; later messages may only be consequences.
  3. Check spelling, delimiters, file paths, and option names against the configuration shipped with the same release. Do not copy options from a different version without checking compatibility.
  4. Confirm that the selected resolver is enabled and reachable.
  5. Try another resolver from the project’s official list if the chosen endpoint is unavailable, then inspect the new log output.
  6. Once a configuration starts cleanly in the foreground, stop it and reinstall or restart the service.

A resolver outage and a malformed configuration can look similar from a browser. The foreground test separates those cases because it exposes the proxy’s own error instead of only showing that webpages cannot load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no browsing after installation

  1. Open the active adapter’s DNS settings and verify that IPv4 uses 127.0.0.1 and that IPv6 is set consistently, or disabled if you deliberately do not use it.
  2. In the Services console, verify that the dnscrypt-proxy service is running and configured to start from the file you tested.
  3. Check the process log for a successful bind and resolver connection.
  4. Look for another local DNS proxy competing for the same port. Stop it temporarily or change one configuration so only one proxy owns the adapter’s DNS endpoint.
  5. Temporarily restore the adapter’s previous DNS server to confirm that the underlying network connection still works. Restore the local address only after the proxy is healthy.
  6. If only one resolver fails, switch to another resolver from the official list rather than changing unrelated Windows network settings.

Changing the adapter back is a diagnostic step, not a fix for a broken proxy. Once the cause is corrected, point the adapter to the local proxy again so applications use the encrypted path you configured.

Windows says “no internet” or shows a yellow network icon

Windows performs an NCSI (Network Connectivity Status Indicator) check that is separate from ordinary application browsing. The DNSCrypt project documents a case in which that check fails through a local DNS proxy even though DNSCrypt is operating and websites work. The resulting warning can therefore be a false alarm rather than proof that the connection is down.

For Windows 10 build 1709 and later, the documented workaround is to enable the Specify Global DNS policy so the connectivity check runs on the interface where the proxy is active. In Local Group Policy Editor, navigate to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Network → DNS Client, open Specify Global DNS, set it to Enabled, and apply the policy. Reboot Windows and test both the status icon and real browsing. The project’s wiki also describes a registry alternative for editions without the policy editor; use that documented procedure exactly and reboot afterward.

Do not disable security controls or repeatedly reinstall the proxy merely because the icon remains yellow. First test several sites, confirm DNSCrypt’s own logs, and determine whether the failure is limited to NCSI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upgrade without losing a working setup

  1. Record the current executable version, service status, listening address, and configuration path.
  2. Stop the service and remove its registration with the documented --uninstall command.
  3. Download the new official build and extract it to a clean folder.
  4. Copy your configuration, then validate that configuration with the new executable in the foreground.
  5. Resolve any changed or unsupported options shown in the log.
  6. Install the service again with --install-with-config-file=dnscrypt-proxy.conf, start it, and verify the adapter DNS settings.

Keeping the old folder until the new build has passed its foreground test gives you a recovery path. Do not overwrite the only known-good executable before confirming that the replacement can bind its port and reach a resolver.

Choosing a resolver and understanding the trade-offs

Encrypted transport does not make every resolver interchangeable. When selecting one, evaluate the resolver’s logging and retention policy, geographic availability, reliability, protocol support, and whether its filtering behavior matches your needs. A resolver that blocks ads or unwanted content can also block a legitimate domain, while an unfiltered resolver may return more results but provide fewer protections. Caching can reduce repeated lookups, yet stale or failed cache data can make troubleshooting less obvious.

DNSCrypt’s Windows integration is powerful but deliberately hands-on: there is no ordinary graphical wizard, the service and adapter must agree on a local address, and a resolver or port failure can affect every application at once. The benefit is explicit control over resolver choice, encrypted transport, optional DNS-over-HTTPS, and configurable monitoring or filtering. The cost is that you must maintain the configuration and have a fallback plan when a resolver or local service fails.

When you should stop troubleshooting the file

If you cannot prove that the executable came from the DNSCrypt project, treat the incident as a security investigation rather than a networking setup problem. Quarantine the file, run a full security scan, review unknown services and startup entries, and obtain a clean official release. If the file is authentic but the service repeatedly fails after a clean configuration, capture the exact console or log error, the Windows version and build, the listening address and port, and the resolver name. Those details distinguish permissions, parsing, resolver availability, port conflicts, and NCSI behavior far more effectively than the generic symptom “the internet is down.”

Practical verification checklist

  • The executable is located in the folder where you extracted an official release.
  • The package source and release-verification information are trustworthy.
  • Your antivirus or Windows security scan reports no threat.
  • The configuration parses successfully when run in the foreground.
  • The service installs from an elevated prompt and starts from the tested configuration.
  • The adapter uses 127.0.0.1 for IPv4, with IPv6 configured consistently if enabled.
  • No other local DNS service owns the same address and port.
  • The selected resolver responds, and the log records successful queries.
  • A yellow Windows network icon has been checked against real browsing and the documented NCSI workaround.
  • You can restore the previous DNS settings if the proxy must be stopped.
