DNS (the Domain Name System) is the internet’s distributed, hierarchical naming system. It lets software request data for a name such as www.example.com and receive the appropriate DNS record, often an IPv4 or IPv6 address. A recursive resolver performs the search, using its cache or following referrals from root nameservers to a top-level-domain (TLD) server and then to the domain’s authoritative nameserver.
That process is more precise than saying DNS is a single directory that converts every website name into one IP address. DNS can return multiple addresses, aliases, mail-routing instructions and many other record types. DNS finds the requested data; connecting to a server and loading a web page happen afterward.

What is DNS?
DNS is a naming system that maps human-readable names to structured data used by computers. The namespace is divided among many servers and administrative zones rather than stored in one central database. This distribution allows different organizations to manage their own domains while the hierarchy provides a consistent way to find the responsible servers.

A browser normally does not contact a root server or an authoritative server directly. The application or operating system sends a request to a local, or stub, resolver. That component forwards the request to a recursive resolver operated by a network, organization or DNS service. The recursive resolver obtains the answer and returns it to the client.

For a web address, the requested data is commonly an address record. An A record contains an IPv4 address, while an AAAA record contains an IPv6 address. However, a name can have several records and several addresses, so “translate a domain name into an IP address” is a useful beginner description, not a complete definition.
How does a domain name get translated into an IP address?
Consider a request for the A or AAAA record of www.example.com. The usual uncached sequence looks like this:
- The client chooses a resolver. The browser or operating system asks its configured local resolver to find a particular name and record type. The request might ask for an A record, an AAAA record or another type.
- The recursive resolver checks its cache. If it has a still-valid answer, it can send that data back immediately. No trip through the DNS hierarchy is needed for that request.
- The resolver asks the root system when necessary. If it lacks a usable cached answer, it queries a root nameserver. The root does not normally know the IP address for
www.example.com; it supplies information about the nameservers responsible for the relevant TLD, in this case.com. - The resolver follows the TLD referral. A
.comnameserver identifies the authoritative nameservers delegated forexample.com. - The authoritative server returns the domain data. The authoritative nameserver for the zone supplies the requested record for
www.example.com, such as one or more A or AAAA records, or an alias that requires another lookup. - The recursive resolver replies to the client. It sends the result to the local resolver, which makes it available to the application. The resolver can also retain the result for the period allowed by its TTL.
These are referrals to the next authority, not a sequence in which every server contains every website’s records. A cache hit can end the process before the root is contacted, and operational details can vary, but root → TLD → authoritative is the standard explanation for a lookup with no usable cached answer.

What is a DNS resolver?
A resolver is the part of the DNS system that obtains an answer on a client’s behalf. The word can describe two related layers, so keeping their jobs separate prevents common misunderstandings.
| Component | Where it operates | Main job |
|---|---|---|
| Stub or local resolver | On or near the client device | Accepts a lookup from the application or operating system and sends it to a recursive DNS service. |
| Recursive resolver | Usually on a network or at a DNS provider | Checks cached data, performs further queries and follows referrals until it can answer the client’s request. |
| Root nameserver | At the top of the DNS hierarchy | Identifies the nameservers for a requested top-level domain. |
| TLD nameserver | Within a TLD such as .com |
Provides delegation information for the registered domain, such as which servers are authoritative for example.com. |
| Authoritative nameserver | For a particular DNS zone | Stores the original records for that zone and returns authoritative data for names it serves. |
The recursive resolver is therefore the client-facing searcher and cache, while the authoritative nameserver is the source for the zone’s original records. Root, TLD and authoritative servers are different levels of authority, not interchangeable names for the same service.

What happens in a cached lookup versus an uncached lookup?
Caching is why repeated visits often avoid a complete hierarchy walk. After receiving a record, a recursive resolver may keep it until its time to live expires. A later client request can be answered from that cache, reducing latency and traffic.
| Situation | Resolver behavior | Result for the client |
|---|---|---|
| Usable cached record | Returns the stored response without querying root, TLD or authoritative servers for this request. | Usually faster; the answer reflects data retained within its remaining TTL. |
| No usable cached record | Queries the hierarchy, follows referrals and asks the authoritative server for the requested data. | The client receives current authoritative data available at that time, subject to later caching. |
Not every device or network refreshes at exactly the same moment. Different recursive resolvers may have cached the previous value at different times, and client software can maintain its own short-lived cache. Consequently, changing a DNS record does not guarantee that every user sees the new value simultaneously.

DNS is a framework for resource records, not just a store of website addresses. The record type in a query determines what kind of data the resolver should return.
A and AAAA: address records
An A record carries an IPv4 address. An AAAA record carries an IPv6 address. A name can publish one record, several records of the same type or both types. Multiple addresses may support different network paths, services or traffic-distribution arrangements; DNS itself does not imply that there is one unique address.
CNAME: an alias
A CNAME record identifies another, canonical name. It does not itself provide the requested IPv4 or IPv6 address. When a resolver encounters a CNAME while answering an address query, it may need to look up the target name to obtain the corresponding A or AAAA data. The visible hostname and the name that ultimately supplies the address can therefore differ.

Other record types
DNS also carries records for purposes such as mail routing and other services. The requested record type matters: asking for mail-related data is not the same operation as asking for an IPv4 address. This is why “resolving a name to DNS data” is technically broader than “turning a name into an IP.”
What is TTL, and why can DNS changes take time?
TTL means time to live. In DNS, it is expressed in seconds and tells a resolver how long it may retain a record in its cache before discarding it and obtaining fresh data. A resolver can reuse the response during that interval rather than asking the authoritative server for every client request.
TTL is a caching instruction, not a promise that a particular browser, operating system or provider will display an update at one exact instant. If a record was cached shortly before you changed it, that cache can continue serving the old value until its permitted lifetime ends. Other resolvers that obtained the record at different times may update sooner or later.
When diagnosing an apparently stale DNS result, identify which resolver supplied the answer and allow for its remaining cache lifetime. A result that differs between networks can reflect normal cache timing rather than a failure in the authoritative zone.
How the hierarchy fits together
Domain names are read as labels separated by dots, with the hierarchy progressing toward the root at the right-hand side. In www.example.com, com is the TLD, example is the registered domain beneath that TLD, and www is a hostname within the domain’s zone. The root is represented conceptually by a final empty label, usually omitted in everyday writing.

ICANN’s ICP-3: A Unique, Authoritative Root for the DNS describes the design this way: “The DNS is hierarchical. By design, the hierarchy begins with a group of root nameservers (often called simply “root servers”), which are specially-designated computers operated under common coordination that provide information about which other computers are authoritative regarding the top-level domains in the DNS naming structure.” The root’s role is delegation information; the authoritative server for a domain holds that domain’s records.
Delegation lets the namespace scale. The root does not need an entry for every hostname, and a TLD server does not need to store the address for every individual web page. Each level directs the resolver closer to the zone that owns the requested name.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What DNS does not do
- It does not load the web page. DNS can provide an address, but the browser must then establish a network connection and use application protocols to request the page.
- It does not guarantee one address. A name may have multiple A or AAAA records, or may lead through a CNAME alias.
- It is not one central directory. Records are distributed among zones and authoritative servers, with recursive resolvers assembling answers for clients.
- The root does not hold every site’s IP address. It points the resolver toward the nameservers responsible for the relevant TLD.
Common DNS misunderstandings and practical checks
“Every lookup starts at the root.”
Usually false. A usable cached response can satisfy the request immediately. The root-to-authoritative path describes what the recursive resolver may do when it needs to obtain data.
“The domain name directly equals one server address.”
Not necessarily. Check which record type was requested, whether the name is an alias, and whether multiple address records were published. IPv4 and IPv6 answers can legitimately differ.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“A DNS change failed because one network still shows the old value.”
Compare the resolver being used and the record’s TTL. Cached responses can remain available for their permitted lifetime, while another resolver may already have fetched the new authoritative value.
Best Value
“The DNS server owns the website.”
A recursive service generally supplies an answer from cache or by querying other servers. The authoritative nameserver is the one that publishes the original records for its zone; neither role by itself describes the web server that delivers page content.
Why the distinction between recursive and authoritative servers matters
When a lookup is slow, stale or unexpected, the role tells you where to investigate. A recursive resolver can be returning a cached response, while an authoritative server can be publishing the zone’s current record. Looking at only one role can give a misleading picture of the full path.
The same distinction also explains scale: authoritative operators maintain records for their zones, and recursive operators serve many clients by reusing answers. Together with root and TLD delegations, these roles create a system in which no single server must maintain the entire namespace or answer every user directly.

You enter www.example.com in a browser. The operating system’s stub resolver sends an address query to its configured recursive resolver. If that resolver has a valid cached A response, it returns the IPv4 data immediately. Otherwise, it asks a root nameserver for the .com delegation, asks a .com nameserver for the delegation of example.com, and queries the domain’s authoritative nameserver. If the authoritative response is a CNAME, the recursive resolver follows the target name to obtain the requested address data. It returns the final DNS response to the client and may cache it for the TTL. Only then does the browser proceed with the separate network exchange needed to retrieve the site.
