Anything you carry remains at risk until extraction. However, “DMZ” does not describe one identical mode. The newly announced Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ and Call of Duty: Mobile’s DMZ: Recon use different maps, objectives and loss rules.
This guide separates those versions and explains the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 mode first.

What does DMZ mean in Call of Duty?
DMZ stands for an extraction-based multiplayer experience rather than a conventional match with a fixed score limit. You deploy with an Operator, search the environment for loot and resources, fight computer-controlled enemies and, in most versions, other players, then choose when and how to exfiltrate.
The central decision is risk versus reward. Staying longer can produce better equipment, mission progress and rarer crafting materials, but it also exposes your squad to more enemies, rival Operators and changing hazards. If the operation fails, some or all of what you carried can be lost, depending on the version.

The newest mainline version is the DMZ mode announced for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. It is set in the Hajin exclusion zone and connects individual deployments through a persistent Forward Operating Base (FOB), storage, crafting and Operator progression.
Which Call of Duty DMZ are you asking about?
| Version | Where it appears | Setting | Core objective | Extraction and loss rules | Persistent systems |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare 4 DMZ | Modern Warfare 4 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 | Hajin exclusion zone | Story Missions, match-generated Dynamic Operations, side activities, looting and player-driven encounters | Helicopters and skyhooks are confirmed exfil methods. The full launch sequence, timers and locations have not been published. Lost Operators can be recovered through the FOB for in-game cash and a rescue team. | FOB storage, crafting, equipment, Traits, rewards and longer-term progression |
| Original Warzone 2.0 DMZ | Warzone 2.0 | Al Mazrah | Faction missions, Contracts and side objectives | Call a helicopter at marked exfil points. A final exfil point appeared after marked locations were used. Death removed all non-permanent Backpack items, although squadmates could revive one another. | Permanent unlocks and mission progress, with carried non-permanent items at risk |
| DMZ: Recon | Call of Duty: Mobile | Mobile extraction map | Squad-based PvPvE looting and survival | Squads of three use one of several Exfils. Extracting before the match ends preserves earned progress and loot; dying before extraction loses it. | Progress and loot retained when extraction succeeds |
These are related concepts, not interchangeable rule sets. Instructions written for the 2022 Al Mazrah mode should not be assumed to describe Modern Warfare 4.
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ: the current announced mode
Setting and premise
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ takes place in Hajin, an exclusion zone affected by the events of the game’s campaign. Players operate as off-the-books assets searching for advanced military technology and weapons while hostile forces and rival Operators compete for the same opportunities.
Activision describes the mode as a persistent extraction experience in a living combat environment. Weather can change visibility, some locations are hidden or especially dangerous, and enemy responses can escalate as players create more activity. A loud assault may therefore produce reinforcements or attract another squad that would have ignored a quiet scavenger.
“DMZ is Call of Duty’s definitive extraction shooter, a living world with unpredictable enemy encounters, weather, and objectives all brought together by meaningful match-to-match progression and inventory systems.”

Solo and squad play
The announced mode supports solo deployments and squad play. The public overview does not establish a single mandatory team size for the Modern Warfare 4 version, so squad-size assumptions from DMZ: Recon or the original Warzone mode should not be carried over.

Story Missions
Story Missions provide narrative objectives at specific points of interest. They are designed for solo players or squads and extend the wider Modern Warfare 4 storyline over time. A mission may direct you toward a particular location or situation rather than simply asking for the highest possible loot value.
Dynamic Operations
Dynamic Operations are multi-step objectives generated for an individual match. Announced examples include neutralizing abandoned weapons programs, securing critical assets, rescuing people and attacking hostile forces. Because the sequence is generated per deployment, the route and pressure can differ from one run to the next.
Side Ops and free exploration
You can also pursue smaller activities without following a major mission chain. Examples include locating lost supply drops, repairing useful trucks and climbing damaged radio towers. Free exploration can uncover hidden locations, resources or tactical routes, but it also means spending time in areas where enemy activity may increase.
Player-versus-player encounters and bounties
Other human Operators are part of the threat model. You may hunt a rival through a bounty or engage a squad that contests the same objective. The announced notoriety system makes aggressive behavior consequential: attacking Operators can increase your visibility and make you easier for other squads to track.
Not every contact has to become a firefight. Encounters may lead to combat, negotiation or avoidance. The choice depends on your equipment, mission, information and remaining extraction options.

Looting and crafting
Buildings, sites and defeated enemies can provide gear, resources and rare ingredients. Extracted materials feed the FOB’s upgradable 3D Printer, which converts resources into equipment and other support items for later deployments. This gives low-profile scavenging a purpose even when you are not chasing a headline objective.
How extraction works in Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
Extraction is the point at which a risky run becomes secured progress. The official announcement confirms multiple exfil methods, including helicopters and skyhooks. Your valuables, equipment and resources remain exposed until the extraction succeeds.
- Choose a goal before you deploy. Decide whether the run is primarily for a Story Mission, a Dynamic Operation, resources, a bounty or exploration.
- Watch how the zone responds. Weather, enemy escalation, reinforcements and rival Operators can change the danger level after you make noise or spend too long in one area.
- Set a withdrawal threshold. Leave when the value of your recovered gear outweighs the benefit of another objective. A damaged squad with limited medical or defensive resources should normally extract earlier than a fully equipped team.
- Move toward an available exfil method. Helicopters and skyhooks are confirmed options, but the launch information does not yet specify every interaction, timer or location.
- Protect the final approach. Extraction is a predictable moment for enemies and rivals to attack. Coordinate sightlines, watch flanks and avoid beginning a fight that prevents the squad from boarding or reaching the extraction point.
- Confirm successful departure. Only a completed extraction secures the items and resources you intended to carry into future progression.
Because the published overview does not provide a complete launch-day extraction sequence, exact call-in steps, countdowns and final-exfil rules should be checked against current in-game instructions after release rather than borrowed from the 2022 mode.
What happens when an Operator is downed?
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ includes a wounded-state mechanic called Tourniquet for situations in which a player lacks self-revive. A squad can rescue a downed Operator or leave them behind. Operators lost in action can be recovered through the FOB: the recovery costs in-game cash and sends a rescue team.
This system changes the meaning of a failed run. Losing a deployment can still create setbacks, but it does not necessarily erase the Operator from your longer-term plans. Players can also earn experience, unlock rewards and gain Traits even when an operation does not end with a clean extraction.
How the FOB connects one deployment to the next
The Forward Operating Base is the bridge between separate matches. It provides storage for recovered materials and supports upgrades that affect what you can prepare for future operations.

The original DMZ, launched in the Warzone 2.0 era, placed Operators in Al Mazrah. Players selected faction missions, accepted Contracts and pursued side objectives before trying to leave.
Its published extraction guidance described calling a helicopter at marked exfil points. Once the marked locations had been used, a final exfil point was revealed. Death removed all non-permanent items in the Backpack, although a surviving squadmate could revive you.
Those details are useful for understanding the extraction-shooter formula, but they are not confirmed rules for Modern Warfare 4. The new mode has different setting, progression systems and announced exfil methods.
How DMZ: Recon on Call of Duty: Mobile differs
DMZ: Recon is a separate mobile mode. Activision Support describes it as a squad-of-three extraction experience with PvPvE combat against human players and hostile forces. Players drop in, fight, collect loot and leave through one of several Exfils.

Extraction must happen before the match ends to preserve earned progress and loot. Dying before extraction loses those gains. It therefore uses the clearest form of the extraction bargain: the longer you remain, the more you can collect, but none of it is secure until you leave.

Why extraction shooters feel different from ordinary Call of Duty matches
Traditional multiplayer usually rewards staying in the fight until the timer or score limit ends. DMZ adds a personal exit decision. A player who has completed a mission but found valuable resources must decide whether to risk one more building, fight a rival squad or leave immediately.
- Information matters: knowing where enemies, weather and objectives are shifting can be more valuable than carrying one additional weapon.
- Noise has a cost: firefights can trigger stronger enemy responses and increase your visibility to other Operators.
- Team condition matters: a wounded squad with limited recovery options has a different risk tolerance from a fully supplied squad.
- Mission value and loot value differ: completing a narrative step may be worthwhile even when the backpack is not full, while a resource run may justify avoiding combat altogether.
- Extraction is part of the objective: completing a task without surviving the departure may not secure the items you wanted to keep.
When will Modern Warfare 4 DMZ be available?
As of October 13, 2026, Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to release on October 23, 2026. Xbox Wire reported that digital preorders or purchases provide DMZ early access from October 20. These are scheduled dates, not proof that the mode has already launched, and release timing or post-launch mechanics can change.
The announced platform list is PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The mode is part of Modern Warfare 4 rather than a rule update to the old Warzone 2.0 DMZ.

What is confirmed—and what is not yet specified?
The announced Modern Warfare 4 DMZ facts include the Hajin setting, solo or squad play, Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, side activities, PvPvE combat, escalating threats, weather, helicopters and skyhooks, the FOB, crafting, Operator recovery and persistent progression.
The public overview does not establish every extraction interaction, countdown, exfil location, exact inventory-loss formula or final-exfil procedure. Until a mode-specific launch guide supplies those details, avoid treating Al Mazrah instructions as universal DMZ rules.
