diskspd64l.exe is usually the legacy 64-bit DiskSpd benchmark executable bundled with CrystalDiskMark. CrystalDiskMark’s source identifies the file as CdmResourcediskspddiskspd64L.exe, alongside the current diskspd64.exe binary. Microsoft describes DiskSpd as a storage-performance tool used to generate controlled read and write workloads.
The name alone does not prove that a copy is safe. A file in a genuine CrystalDiskMark installation with a matching publisher, signature and hash is a different situation from an identically named file in a temporary, startup or unexplained folder. Follow the provenance and hash checks below before deleting or replacing it.

What diskspd64l.exe is
DiskSpd is a command-line storage benchmark from Microsoft’s Windows, Windows Server and Cloud Server Infrastructure engineering teams. It generates configurable I/O against one or more targets so that throughput, bandwidth and latency can be measured under repeatable conditions.

The project source distinguishes the normal 64-bit executable, diskspd64.exe, from diskspd64L.exe, which it labels DISK_SPD_EXE_64_LEGACY. The trailing “L” therefore normally means that the file is the legacy build selected by a CrystalDiskMark package, not that it is a Windows system component.

What the executable does
DiskSpd can test regular files, drive-letter targets or physical devices. A file target exercises the file system and storage stack as well as the drive. A device target focuses more directly on device behavior. Workloads can be sequential or random, single-threaded or multithreaded, and can use different queue depths and read/write mixes. Those choices materially change the result, so a benchmark number is meaningful only when its target and workload are recorded.
Why the file may look different from diskspd64.exe
A project issue notes that the current diskspd64.exe has the internal name diskspd.exe and the file description DiskSpd Storage Performance Tool. Those version-resource properties are missing from legacy executables. Missing description or internal-name fields in diskspd64l.exe are consequently not, by themselves, evidence of malware. They should be considered together with the path, signature and hash.
Is diskspd64l.exe safe?
It can be legitimate, but safety is conditional. A copy located inside a trusted CrystalDiskMark or CrystalMark package and matching that package’s expected hash is consistent with the documented benchmark component. A copy found in a user’s temporary directory, an unfamiliar startup location, a downloaded archive that nobody installed, or a folder created recently by an unknown program deserves investigation.

A clean result for that hash does not certify another copy.

Check the complete path first
In a normal CrystalDiskMark installation, a path resembling C:Program FilesCrystalDiskMark8CdmResourceDiskSpdDiskSpd64L.exe is consistent with the project’s documented layout. The exact folder can vary by CrystalDiskMark release, installation method and drive letter. A path under Temp, a random folder in a user profile, or an automatic-start location is not automatically malicious, but it is not the expected location and should not be trusted without further checks.
Check the publisher and signature
- Right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Properties.
- On Details, note the product name, file description, company and file version. Legacy files may omit some of these fields.
- On Digital Signatures, inspect the signer and use Details to confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. An absent signature is a reason to verify the hash and package source; it is not conclusive proof of compromise.
- Record the file size and the full path before moving or deleting anything.
Calculate a hash and compare the exact package
Open PowerShell and calculate the SHA-256 value for the file you actually have:

certutil -hashfile "C:pathtodiskspd64l.exe" SHA256Compare the result with a hash published for the exact CrystalDiskMark or CrystalMark package and release you installed. Do not compare a legacy executable with the hash of the current diskspd64.exe, and do not treat a matching filename as a matching identity.

Scan the exact file
Run a current scan from Windows Security or your organization’s security software, then submit the hash or file to a reputable multi-engine scanning service if policy permits. Review the detection names, engine count, file age and hash—not just a single red or green label. If the path is unexpected, preserve the hash and scan results before quarantining the file so you can identify which installer or archive introduced it.
How to fix a diskspd64l.exe error in CrystalDiskMark
CrystalDiskMark errors commonly occur when the benchmark executable is missing, quarantined, blocked, mismatched with the application release or unable to access the selected target. Work through these steps in order.
1. Capture the exact message and context
Write down the complete error text, when it appears and what you selected. “File not found,” “access denied,” a missing-DLL message and a benchmark timeout have different causes. Note whether the failure occurs when CrystalDiskMark starts, when a test begins, or only for one drive. A screenshot is useful, but the exact text is better for searching Windows logs and support documentation.
2. Verify that the component still exists
- Close CrystalDiskMark.
- Open the application’s installation folder and then
CdmResourcediskspd. - Confirm whether
diskspd64L.exeis present, whetherdiskspd64.exeis present, and whether Windows reports that either file is blocked. - Do not download a loose executable from an unknown mirror to fill the gap.
If Windows Security quarantined the file, review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore it only when the path, package and hash have been verified and your security policy allows restoration. A restoration followed by an immediate detection is a reason to stop and investigate the package, not to keep bypassing protection.

3. Repair or reinstall CrystalDiskMark
Use the publisher’s trusted installer or your operating system’s package manager to repair or reinstall the same CrystalDiskMark edition. Reinstallation is the safest way to restore a matching CdmResourcediskspd set because the application and benchmark binaries are deployed together. Before reinstalling, record custom settings and close other disk-intensive programs. If the installer offers repair, use it; otherwise uninstall the affected copy, restart Windows, and install a freshly obtained package from a trusted source.
4. Check architecture and Windows compatibility
Do not substitute an ARM64 executable for an x64 build or the reverse. CrystalDiskMark’s bundled legacy file is a 64-bit component intended to match the package that installed it. An architecture mismatch can produce a launch failure or a misleading missing-component message. Also check whether the application itself supports your Windows edition and build.
5. Check access rights and file blocking
- Open the file’s Properties and look for an Unblock checkbox on the General tab. Use it only after confirming that the file came from a trusted package.
- Make sure your account can read and execute files in the CrystalDiskMark directory.
- If the program is installed under
Program Files, start CrystalDiskMark normally first. Use Run as administrator only when the specific error indicates an access or device-permission problem. - Check whether corporate application-control software, Controlled folder access or another security product is blocking the executable. Ask an administrator to review the event rather than weakening protection globally.
6. Test the destination drive safely
DiskSpd can target files, drive letters or physical devices. For a first test, select a noncritical volume and use a test file rather than a physical-device target. Microsoft’s documented disk-IOPS procedure recommends at least 100 GB of free space, an elevated command prompt and a test directory that is not being used by other workloads. It also advises disabling interfering workloads such as active antivirus scanning of the test directory; if you make a temporary exclusion for a controlled test, apply it only to that directory and remove it immediately afterward.

Never run a destructive write workload against a disk containing irreplaceable data. Confirm the target path twice, maintain a backup, and stop if the command line selects a physical device you did not intend to test.
7. Use the documented command-line form
Microsoft documents the syntax as:
diskspd [options] target1 [ target2 [ target3 ... ] ]Use the executable that belongs to the package you verified, specify the intended target explicitly, and record the options, target type, queue depth, thread count, duration and read/write mix with the result. If you are unsure what an option does, consult Microsoft’s DiskSpd documentation before running it rather than copying a command designed for another drive or workload.
8. Check Windows logs when the error persists
Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System at the time of the failure. Look for application error, side-by-side, access-control, storage and disk events. A storage timeout or controller error points to the drive, cable, controller or driver rather than to the benchmark file. A missing-DLL or application-crash event after a clean reinstall points toward the package, architecture or Windows component state.

If you need DiskSpd independently of CrystalDiskMark, Microsoft publishes current releases from its repository. The current release information lists DiskSpd 2.3 dated September 3, 2026, with amd64 and arm64 binaries. The minimum supported operating system is Windows 10 version 1803 (RS4). IoRing and BypassIO features require Windows 11 or later.
Use the current Microsoft package when you need a standalone command-line benchmark, repeatable automation or an architecture-specific build. Keep it in a clearly named folder, record its release and hash, and avoid mixing its files with CrystalDiskMark’s private CdmResourcediskspd directory. CrystalDiskMark may expect a particular legacy filename or package layout even when a newer standalone DiskSpd binary can run on the same computer.
Common symptoms and the right response

Can you delete diskspd64l.exe?
Deleting it is safe only when you have established that the file is unwanted and no installed application needs it. Removing the file from CrystalDiskMark’s resource directory can break that application’s benchmark component or make future updates fail. The preferred sequence is to uninstall or repair the parent application, then remove leftovers through the normal Windows uninstall process. If security checks show that an unexplained copy is malicious or unrelated, quarantine it first and preserve its hash and location for investigation. Do not replace it with a random download simply to make an error disappear.
A practical verification checklist
- Record the complete path, size and timestamp.
- Identify whether it came with CrystalDiskMark, CrystalMarkRetro, a standalone DiskSpd package or an unknown archive.
- Check Properties, publisher and digital signature.
- Calculate SHA-256 and compare it with the exact trusted package.
- Scan the exact file and review multi-engine results by hash.
- Check Windows Security history and Event Viewer.
- Repair or reinstall the parent package before substituting files.
- For benchmarks, use a noncritical file target, keep adequate free space and document workload settings.

In the expected CrystalDiskMark folder, diskspd64l.exe is normally a legitimate legacy 64-bit DiskSpd benchmark component. Treat an unexplained copy as unverified until its path, signature, hash and scan results agree. For errors, restore the matching package through a repair or reinstall, use a safe test target and documented DiskSpd settings, and investigate Windows or storage events when the failure is not actually caused by the executable.
