diskreviver.exe is the Windows executable associated with the Disk Reviver disk-cleanup and optimization application. Its name alone does not prove that a particular copy is legitimate or harmless. Check where the file is stored, whether you installed Disk Reviver, its digital signature and hash, and the results of current security scans. If the file is unexpected or errors began after installing it, uninstall or repair Disk Reviver first, then scan Windows and use System Restore or recovery media only if the problem continues.
What diskreviver.exe is
Disk Reviver is a Windows utility marketed for finding duplicate files and recovering storage space. A ReviverSoft product description says it identifies and removes duplicate files. A ReviverSoft article dated October 11, 2026, identifies DiskReviver.exe as the file opened after downloading the product and describes scans for temporary clutter, junk files and fragmentation.

The executable is therefore not automatically a Windows system file. It belongs to an optional third-party product. A normal installation may place it under a path such as C:Program FilesDisk Reviverdiskreviver.exe, although the path can differ by installer, Windows edition or user-selected destination. The filename can be copied by unrelated software, so the name and icon are not authentication.
Is diskreviver.exe safe?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer from the filename alone. Safety depends on the exact file, its origin, publisher information, behavior and scan results.

What one reported sample tells you
A ThreatInfo record for one sample lists the product as Disk Reviver, the company as Corel Corporation, a reported valid Corel signature, an MD5 hash of e663059fee41b3810c624b2baed1f2cf, and a size of approximately 2 MB. That record was dated July 11, 2024, and showed an undefined status rather than a final safe or malicious verdict. A signature can help identify the publisher of that exact file; it does not prove that every copy is safe or that the installer came from a trustworthy source.
Do not confuse Disk Reviver with DriverReviver
Microsoft Defender’s separately named PUA:Win32/DriverReviver detection is not a verdict about diskreviver.exe. The names are similar, but they refer to different product names. Reports associated with DriverReviver mention possible slow performance, changed files or settings, freezing, crashes and reduced storage. Those reports must not be used as proof that Disk Reviver is the same threat. The consulted sources do not provide a current Microsoft verdict specifically for DiskReviver.exe.
Why “potentially unwanted” still matters
Microsoft explains that potentially unwanted apps are not necessarily malware, but may show unwanted advertising, use a PC for cryptomining without an expected reason, offer unexpected applications or make other changes a user did not want. An unexpected installation deserves investigation even when no scanner calls it malware.

Check a copy before you remove or trust it
Use the following checks on the computer that has the file. Do not launch an unknown copy merely to test it.
- Record the full path. In File Explorer, right-click the process or file and choose Open file location when available. A path inside the Disk Reviver installation directory is more consistent with an intentional install than a copy in a temporary, downloads or randomly named folder. A familiar path is only a clue, not proof.
- Ask whether you installed it. Check Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds) for Disk Reviver. Consider who installed it and whether it arrived bundled with another download. An unrecognized program should be treated as unwanted until verified.
- Inspect the file properties. Right-click
diskreviver.exe, select Properties, and review the Digital Signatures tab, signer and file version. A signature that is missing, invalid or issued to an unexpected publisher is a warning. A valid signature supports publisher identity for that file but is not a safety guarantee. - Compare a hash when you have a known-good copy. Use the hash shown by the trusted vendor copy or your organization’s software inventory. The reported sample hash is
e663059fee41b3810c624b2baed1f2cf; do not assume another version should match it. Hashes identify a file exactly and change when the file is updated. - Update Defender and scan. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates, check for updates, then run a Full scan. If unwanted behavior persists or the file keeps returning, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan; it restarts Windows and scans outside the normal desktop session.
- Get a second opinion for a difficult case. Microsoft Safety Scanner is a manually run Microsoft tool designed to find and remove malware and attempt to reverse changes made by identified threats. Download a current copy from Microsoft’s own site when you need it; its results are a point-in-time check, so an old scanner build should not be treated as current protection.

Why diskreviver.exe errors occur
Damaged or incomplete installation
An interrupted download, deleted program file or failed update can leave Disk Reviver unable to start. Typical symptoms include a missing-file message, an application that closes immediately or an error after Windows starts.
A conflicting or unwanted copy
Multiple copies in different folders, a bundled installer or a file that does not match the installed product can create repeated prompts and startup errors. If you never intended to install Disk Reviver, persistence is itself a reason to remove it rather than repeatedly launching the executable.

Windows changes that remain after removal
An application can leave a startup entry, scheduled task, registry setting or damaged system component behind. Removing the visible program may not immediately remove every symptom. Record the path first so you can distinguish entries belonging to Disk Reviver from unrelated Windows tasks.
Broader Windows corruption
If crashes, freezes or error messages continue after Disk Reviver is uninstalled and scans are clean, the cause may be a restore-point problem, damaged system files or another application. Escalate gradually instead of deleting random system files.
Manual fixes, from least destructive to most drastic
1. Protect your files and stop launching the executable
Save documents, photos and other personal files to a separate location before making recovery changes. If diskreviver.exe is unexpected, do not open it again. Avoid deleting the file immediately if you still need its path, properties, signature or hash for investigation. Disconnecting from the internet can be sensible while you investigate an unknown process, but do not skip security-definition updates when Windows Security can update safely.

2. Uninstall or repair Disk Reviver
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features).
- Search for Disk Reviver, open its menu and choose Uninstall. Follow the product’s removal wizard and restart Windows when it asks.
- If you intentionally use the application and the error began after an update, choose a Repair option when Windows or the product’s installer provides one. Repair first; uninstall when repair is unavailable or the installation is not wanted.
- After restarting, check whether the original error is gone and whether the executable still exists at the recorded path. Do not remove unrelated files simply because their names look similar.
3. Remove unwanted startup and scheduled entries
When the program starts with Windows, open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable only the entry that points to the recorded Disk Reviver executable. Then review Task Scheduler for tasks whose action points to that same installation. Export or note the task details before deleting an entry, and remove only entries clearly tied to the unwanted installation. Restart and verify that the prompt or process no longer returns.
4. Run current Defender scans
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates.
- Run a Full scan. Allow quarantine or removal of items that Defender identifies, and record the detection name rather than assuming it refers to Disk Reviver.
- If the file or unwanted behavior persists, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first because Windows will restart. Review the result after Windows starts again.
Microsoft recommends uninstalling software you do not need and using updated Defender scans, including an offline scan when unwanted software persists. A clean result does not make an unwanted application useful; it means that scan did not identify a threat.
5. Run Microsoft Safety Scanner when cleanup is difficult
Use a current Microsoft Safety Scanner download and run it manually as a second opinion. It is intended to find and remove malware and try to reverse changes made by threats it identifies. It is not a replacement for regularly updated Windows security protection. Follow its report, restart if requested, and scan again if the report says remediation was incomplete.
6. Use System Restore for continuing Windows errors
If the errors began after installing or updating Disk Reviver and remain after removal, System Restore can return system files, registry settings and installed programs to an earlier restore point without changing personal files. Open Windows recovery settings, choose System Restore, select a point from before the problem, and review the affected-program list before confirming. You may need an administrator account and a restart. System Restore is not a substitute for backing up personal files and does not undo every type of malware or hardware failure.
7. Use recovery media only for severe corruption
For severe Windows corruption or a confirmed malware problem that cannot be cleaned, Microsoft documents creating a Recovery Drive and reinstalling Windows through the Windows Recovery Environment. Creating the drive uses an empty USB device because the process erases data already on that USB drive. Back up personal files separately before reinstalling or resetting Windows, and verify that you have the account credentials and application installers needed afterward. Recovery media is a last resort because it can remove applications and settings even when it restores a usable Windows installation.

Mistakes to avoid
- Do not equate a familiar filename with a trusted file. Malware and unwanted programs can use ordinary names.
- Do not treat one reputation record as a verdict. The 2024 sample’s undefined status illustrates why path, origin, signature, hash and scans must be considered together.
- Do not delete random registry keys or system files. Remove only a documented Disk Reviver installation or startup task; arbitrary deletion can create a new Windows failure.
- Do not confuse DriverReviver with Disk Reviver. A detection for the former does not establish a detection for the latter.
- Do not begin with a destructive reset. Uninstalling, scanning and System Restore preserve more options than reinstalling Windows from recovery media.

diskreviver.exe normally belongs to Disk Reviver, but the filename is not proof of safety. Verify the path, installation history, signature, version, hash and scan results; distinguish Disk Reviver from DriverReviver; and remove an unwanted copy through Windows Apps before checking startup persistence. For errors that survive cleanup, System Restore is the next least-destructive escalation, with backed-up recovery media reserved for serious corruption.
