What Is diskinfo64.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix diskinfo64.exe Errors on Windows

By Freedom251 Team · · 14 min read

diskinfo64.exe is usually associated with CrystalDiskInfo, a disk-health utility, not with a required Windows component. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is legitimate. Check the executable’s complete path, its digital signature, how it arrived on the PC, and the result of a current malware scan before allowing it to run or deleting it.

A normal copy is commonly installed in a CrystalDiskInfo folder under Program Files. A copy in a temporary folder, a user-profile download directory, Windows, or System32—especially one that is unsigned, repeatedly relaunches, shows pop-ups, or changes settings—needs suspicious-file handling.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What diskinfo64.exe does

CrystalDiskInfo reads S.M.A.R.T. and other storage-device information so you can view drive temperature, health indicators, firmware details, interface data, and operating time. diskinfo64.exe is the 64-bit executable name associated with that type of installation. It is not a Windows system process that the operating system requires for startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whether a particular file is safe depends on that copy, not on the spelling of its name. Malware can use a familiar filename, and a legitimate program can be repackaged or bundled with unwanted software. Treat the filename as a lead for investigation rather than as proof of identity.

What the name does—and does not—tell you

The “64” generally describes a 64-bit build, not a special Windows component or a disk driver. Seeing the process in Task Manager does not by itself mean that a disk is failing, nor does it prove that the file is malicious. CrystalDiskInfo may be launched manually, loaded by a shortcut, or started with Windows if that option was selected during setup. The useful question is which copy is running and why it was installed.

A legitimate utility can still be damaged, outdated, unsigned, or repackaged. Conversely, an antivirus alert can apply to one altered sample rather than to every official release. Use several independent checks instead of treating one label as conclusive.

Is diskinfo64.exe safe or a virus?

There is no single yes-or-no answer for every file named diskinfo64.exe. File.net describes a digitally signed, non-Windows-core process commonly installed in a CrystalDiskInfo subfolder under Program Files. Separately, GridinSoft ThreatInfo lists a sample with CrystalDiskInfo metadata and a “Suspicious Object” verdict. That report concerns one sample and does not establish that every release, or every file with this name, is malicious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sample reported by ThreatInfo has MD5 hash 4de4c8cff982406fca9b9e3d5a27f71f. A hash identifies that exact file; it is not a universal hash for all CrystalDiskInfo versions. A different, legitimately updated release will normally have a different hash.

Microsoft says a SmartScreen App Reputation warning is not, by itself, proof of malware: “No – the App Reputation warning is not an indication that the download is malicious.” SmartScreen weighs signals such as download volume, download history, URL reputation, and antivirus results. An unfamiliar or unsigned download still deserves extra caution, particularly when it came from a software bundle, crack, file-sharing page, or an unexpected email.

Microsoft Learn’s unwanted-software guidance, updated April 24, 2024, focuses on behavior such as changing settings without informed consent or installing other software without clear consent. Those behaviors matter even when a file uses a familiar product name.

Signs that support a legitimate installation

  • The process path is a CrystalDiskInfo directory below C:Program Files or another folder you selected during installation.
  • The file’s digital signature is present and the publisher metadata matches CrystalDiskInfo or Crystal Dew World.
  • You installed CrystalDiskInfo intentionally from its publisher or another trusted software source.
  • Microsoft Defender and any other security software report no threat.
  • The process behaves like a disk-health utility: it opens when you launch the application, reads drive information, and does not create unexplained pop-ups or persistence.
  • The file’s version and installation date make sense alongside the CrystalDiskInfo entry in Windows’ installed-app list.

Signs that require investigation

  • The file runs from %TEMP%, a browser download folder, an unrelated user-profile directory, Windows, or System32.
  • The signature is missing, invalid, expired in a way Windows cannot verify, or belongs to an unexpected publisher.
  • You do not remember installing CrystalDiskInfo, or the file appeared after a bundled installer, crack, or unknown download.
  • It causes high CPU or disk use, launches repeatedly, changes browser or security settings, creates scheduled persistence, or displays unsolicited advertising.
  • Your security product reports a detection tied to the local file or its hash.
  • The process has a different spelling, such as a look-alike filename, or several copies appear in unrelated folders.

How to identify the copy on your PC safely

Do these checks before moving or deleting anything. Record the path and security result so you can restore the correct application if the problem is only a damaged installation. If more than one result appears in a search, do not assume that all copies came from the same installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Open the running file’s location

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Windows 11 or Windows 10, select the Details tab. If you see a simplified view, choose More details first.
  3. Find diskinfo64.exe, right-click it, and choose Open file location.
  4. Write down the complete folder path. Do not assume that a familiar filename in an unfamiliar directory is safe.

If the process is not running, search for the file in File Explorer and check each result’s location. Multiple copies can exist; evaluate each one separately. A path below the application’s normal program directory supports the installation story, while a path under a temporary or system directory calls for a scan before execution.

2. Check Properties and the digital signature

  1. Right-click the executable and choose Properties.
  2. On the General tab, note the file size, creation or modification dates, and whether Windows shows an “Unblock” option for a downloaded file. Do not unblock it merely to make it run.
  3. Open Digital Signatures. Select the listed signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
  4. Compare the signer and product information with the CrystalDiskInfo or Crystal Dew World metadata you expect. An absent or mismatched signature is a warning, not an automatic malware verdict.

Some legitimate software builds may not have a signature that Windows can validate, so combine this check with the path, provenance, and scan results rather than relying on one indicator. A valid signature also proves who signed the file, not that the installer was obtained from a trustworthy channel or that the file has not been replaced after installation.

3. Record a hash when you need to compare samples

For a local file, open PowerShell and run:

Get-FileHash -Algorithm MD5 -Path "C:fullpathdiskinfo64.exe"

Replace the example path with the path you recorded. The command returns the hash of your copy. Compare it only with a trustworthy reference for the same release. The MD5 value in the ThreatInfo report, 4de4c8cff982406fca9b9e3d5a27f71f, applies to that report’s sample, not to every diskinfo64.exe file. Do not treat a different hash as proof of infection; legitimate updates, language variants, and repackaging can all produce different hashes.

4. Check how Windows starts it

If diskinfo64.exe appears every time Windows starts, first determine whether CrystalDiskInfo is installed intentionally. Review the application’s entry under Settings > Apps > Installed apps and inspect any startup shortcut only after recording its target. A startup entry pointing to the expected CrystalDiskInfo directory is different from one that launches a copy from a temporary folder. Remove or disable an entry only after scanning and preserving the path and detection details you may need for investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scan diskinfo64.exe with Microsoft Defender

Update Defender before scanning so the security intelligence is current. The wording can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Run a targeted scan

  1. Right-click the file in File Explorer.
  2. Choose Scan with Microsoft Defender or Show more options, then the Defender scan command on older Windows builds.
  3. Allow the scan to finish and save the detection name if one appears.

Run a full scan

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
  3. Choose Full scan and select Scan now.
  4. Keep the detection name, affected path, and action taken in the protection history.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the problem persists

If the file returns after removal, security settings change back, or a scan cannot clean it while Windows is running, select Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first: Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads. Microsoft recommends this mode for unwanted software that persists through a normal scan.

Do not restore a quarantined file solely because its name resembles CrystalDiskInfo. Preserve the detection name and hash, and investigate where the file came from. If Defender reports no threat but the provenance remains unexplained, keep the file quarantined or uninstall the associated application until you can verify it.

Fix “diskinfo64.exe not found” and startup errors

When CrystalDiskInfo is no longer installed

A startup entry can remain after an application was moved or partially removed. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds) and search for CrystalDiskInfo. If it is listed, use its uninstall option. On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After uninstalling, restart Windows and check whether the error has stopped. Remove a leftover startup shortcut only after confirming that it points to the uninstalled program and that no security investigation depends on the file. If the entry remains, do not download a replacement executable simply to silence the message; verify the target and scan first.

When the installation is damaged

  1. Uninstall the existing CrystalDiskInfo installation from Windows’ app list.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Run a Defender scan before installing anything again.
  4. Download the current application only from the publisher or another trusted software source.
  5. Install it to a normal program directory and test whether the error is gone.

Do not download a replacement diskinfo64.exe or a DLL from a random “DLL download” site. Substituting a file with the same name can introduce malware or a version mismatch. Reinstalling the complete application is safer because its executable, supporting files, shortcuts, and registration are restored together.

When Windows says the file is missing but you still need the utility

Check the shortcut’s target: right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target. A stale shortcut may point to a deleted folder or an old drive letter. Delete the stale shortcut or recreate it after a clean, trusted reinstall. Do not copy an executable from another computer unless you can verify that it belongs to the identical application release and has a trustworthy signature.

When an update or uninstall is blocked

Close CrystalDiskInfo and any related window before attempting removal. If Windows reports that the file is in use, end the process from Task Manager only after recording its location, then retry the normal uninstall. If it immediately relaunches or security settings change again, stop troubleshooting as an ordinary software error and use the updated full scan followed by Defender Offline.

What to do about high CPU, pop-ups, or repeated relaunches

High resource use or unsolicited behavior changes the priority from “repair the application” to “verify the file.” First record the path and signature, then terminate the process only if necessary to stop active harm. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose End task; do not delete it while you are still collecting evidence.

Run the targeted, full, and—if needed—offline Defender scans described above. Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance treats unexplained setting changes or installation of other software without clear consent as warning signs. A clean scan does not make an unexpected installation trustworthy, so review the installer source and remove software you did not knowingly authorize.

Do not infer safety from low CPU use, a familiar icon, or the fact that the process disappears when Task Manager opens. Those observations do not establish the publisher or origin. Path, signature, provenance, security result, and behavior should agree before you keep an unexpected copy.

How to handle an antivirus detection

  1. Record the security product’s detection name, file path, and hash.
  2. Let the product quarantine or remove the file rather than choosing “Allow” or “Restore” because the name looks familiar.
  3. Disconnect from sensitive accounts if you suspect the file arrived through a malicious bundle, and change passwords from a known-clean device when appropriate.
  4. Uninstall the associated application through Windows Settings or Control Panel.
  5. Run another full scan after removal and check for remaining startup entries or scheduled tasks only if your security guidance directs you to do so.

A detection attached to one hash does not prove that every diskinfo64.exe release is malicious. It does establish that the local copy needs to be treated according to the security product’s finding until its origin and integrity are clear. Keep the detection name and hash if you seek support; they are more useful than reporting only the filename.

Can you delete diskinfo64.exe?

Yes, but deleting the executable directly is rarely the best first step. If it belongs to a CrystalDiskInfo installation you want to keep, deleting it can create startup errors or leave an incomplete program. Uninstall the application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features instead.

If Defender identifies the file, follow the security product’s quarantine or removal action. If the file is unwanted but not detected, close CrystalDiskInfo, end the process, uninstall the associated program, restart, scan, and then remove verified leftovers. If Windows reports that the file is in use, restart into Windows and repeat the uninstall, or use Defender Offline when persistence suggests unwanted software.

Never delete a copy from Windows or System32 merely because its name is diskinfo64.exe. Verify the path and signature first; those directories are not the expected location for a normal CrystalDiskInfo installation. Deleting a file from a protected directory without knowing its origin can remove evidence or affect another program.

A practical decision checklist

What you find Most appropriate action
CrystalDiskInfo folder under a normal program directory, valid expected signature, clean scans, and intentional installation Keep it, update or reinstall CrystalDiskInfo if it is failing, and monitor for changes.
Expected path but damaged files or “not found” errors Uninstall, restart, scan, and reinstall from a trusted source.
Unknown path, unsigned or mismatched publisher, or unexpected provenance Do not run it; scan, quarantine if detected, and remove the associated unwanted installation.
SmartScreen says the download is not commonly downloaded Verify the source and signature. The warning is a reputation signal, not proof of malware.
Antivirus detection tied to the local hash Preserve the detection details and quarantine or remove the file; do not restore it based on the filename.
Repeated relaunching or unauthorized changes after removal Run updated Defender, then Microsoft Defender Offline, and investigate the originating installer.

No single row overrides the others. For example, a file in the expected directory can still be an altered local copy if its signature or scan result is abnormal. Likewise, a SmartScreen reputation warning on a newly downloaded but correctly signed installer is not the same as a reproducible antivirus detection on the installed executable.

Frequently asked questions

Why is diskinfo64.exe running when I did not open CrystalDiskInfo?

CrystalDiskInfo may have a startup shortcut or another launch setting. Check the installed-app entry, Task Manager location, and shortcut target. If the path is unexpected or the program was never intentionally installed, scan before disabling or deleting anything.

Is a SmartScreen “not commonly downloaded” warning proof that diskinfo64.exe is a virus?

No. Microsoft says the App Reputation warning is not an indication that a download is malicious. It reflects reputation signals such as download volume, history, URL reputation, and antivirus results. Verify the source and signature, and do not ignore additional detections or suspicious behavior.

Does the ThreatInfo MD5 prove my copy is infected?

No. MD5 4de4c8cff982406fca9b9e3d5a27f71f identifies the specific sample listed by GridinSoft ThreatInfo in 2025. Your file needs its own hash comparison, signature check, provenance review, and current security scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I allow diskinfo64.exe through security software?

Do not allow or restore it solely because the name resembles CrystalDiskInfo. Preserve the detection name and hash, quarantine the file, and verify the installation source. A legitimate installation can be reinstalled from a trusted publisher after the computer is clean.

Can I fix the error by downloading diskinfo64.exe from a DLL website?

No. Random executable and DLL download sites can supply malware or incompatible versions. Uninstall the damaged application and reinstall the complete current CrystalDiskInfo package from the publisher or another trusted source.

Is it safe to delete diskinfo64.exe manually?

Only after determining that it is an unwanted leftover or following your security product’s removal action. If it belongs to a program you want, manual deletion can cause startup errors. Prefer Windows’ uninstall function, then scan and remove verified leftovers.

Bottom line

diskinfo64.exe is commonly a CrystalDiskInfo component, but the filename is not an authenticity guarantee. The complete path, valid publisher signature, installation history, and current Defender results provide the meaningful evidence. Repair a legitimate installation by reinstalling it from a trusted source; treat an unexpected, unsigned, or detected copy as suspicious and remove it through Windows and your security software rather than downloading a replacement executable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is diskinfo64.exe?

It is generally the 64-bit executable associated with CrystalDiskInfo, which reads S.M.A.R.T. and other drive-health information. It is not a required Windows component.

Why is diskinfo64.exe running?

CrystalDiskInfo may have been launched manually or configured to start with Windows. Check its full path and startup target; an unexpected location requires a security scan.

Is diskinfo64.exe a virus?

The filename alone cannot answer that. Confirm the path, digital signature, installation source, behavior, and current Microsoft Defender results. A threat report can apply to one hash rather than every release.

How do I fix a diskinfo64.exe not found error?

Check whether CrystalDiskInfo is installed, remove stale shortcuts, and reinstall the complete application from a trusted source after scanning. Do not download a replacement executable from a random file site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delete diskinfo64.exe?

Use Windows’ uninstall option if it belongs to CrystalDiskInfo. If security software detects it, quarantine or remove it through that product. Manually deleting a wanted copy can leave startup errors.

The Bottom Line

Verify diskinfo64.exe by its path, signature, origin, behavior, and Defender results—not by its name alone. Reinstall legitimate CrystalDiskInfo files from a trusted source, and quarantine unexpected or detected copies.
