Digital satellite radio is audio programming transmitted digitally from satellites to fixed, mobile or portable receivers. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) calls the service Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service (SDARS); it is commonly known as satellite radio.
What is digital satellite radio?
The FCC defines SDARS as a service that transmits digital audio programming from one or more space stations to receiving stations. The receiver may be in a vehicle, home, boat, aircraft or portable device. The term describes how the programming is delivered—not simply the type of content being played.

In a 2009 order, the FCC described satellite radio as offering music, entertainment, news, sports, and weather and data services. That description explains the range of programming the service can carry; the order’s subscriber figure is historical, not a current market count. Read the FCC order.

How does satellite radio work?
Programming is sent to satellites, which transmit the digital signal toward receivers on Earth. A satellite-radio system may also use studios, satellite-control facilities and complementary terrestrial transmitters. SiriusXM describes these as parts of its system in its 2025 annual filing; that company description should not be taken as a universal specification for every service.

Satellite visibility matters. Buildings, terrain, foliage and tunnels can obstruct or reflect a satellite signal. Terrestrial repeaters retransmit the satellite-provided signal in areas where direct reception is difficult, helping maintain reception without turning the service into a separate local radio network. In its 2025 annual filing, SiriusXM reported operating more than 1,000 repeaters in the United States.
What equipment can receive it?
Satellite radio can be received in cars and trucks, boats, aircraft, homes and portable settings. Listening requires a compatible receiver and an available signal. The FCC’s description identifies these broad device contexts, but it does not establish that every vehicle or receiver model is compatible with a particular service. Check compatibility for the specific receiver and installation before relying on it.

Is satellite radio the same as streaming?
No. Satellite radio sends programming from satellites to a compatible receiver; streaming delivers audio over an internet connection to a connected device. A provider may offer related programming through both routes, but an app does not become satellite radio merely because it carries similar channels. SiriusXM discusses satellite delivery and streaming distribution separately in its 2025 annual filing.
| Listening method | Delivery connection | Typical receiving device | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Satellite radio | Digital signal from satellites; terrestrial repeaters can help in obstructed areas | Compatible satellite-radio receiver | Reception depends on compatible equipment and signal availability |
| Internet streaming | Internet connection | Connected phone, computer or other internet-capable device | Listening depends on internet access |
Why the term SDARS matters
“Digital satellite radio” is a descriptive phrase; SDARS is the FCC’s technical and regulatory term for the U.S. service. The distinction is useful when reading regulations or official descriptions. It also keeps the definition precise: the defining feature is satellite-originated digital transmission to receivers, even when repeaters assist with reception.

The FCC’s order dates to 2009, so its subscriber count should not be presented as current. SiriusXM’s 2025 filing provides more recent, company-reported infrastructure details, including its repeater count and satellite updates. It states that SXM-9 entered service in January 2025 and SXM-10 in July 2025; these operational details are time-sensitive. The FCC characterized SiriusXM as the only U.S. SDARS operator in a 2024 report, a statement limited to that time and geography—not a claim about the global market.
