Why the filename is ambiguous
Windows does not assign one universal meaning to diet.exe. The file’s directory and parent application matter more than the name.

These are different programs that happen to share a filename. Applying a Dovetail fix to an old DOS utility, or deleting a suspicious copy before preserving evidence, can create a new problem.

Is diet.exe safe or a virus?
There is no safe-or-malicious verdict based on the filename alone. A copy in a vendor’s installation directory with a matching publisher and valid signature is a different case from an unsigned executable that appeared in a randomly named AppData folder.

Microsoft’s guidance is provenance-first: obtain software from trusted sources, keep security intelligence current, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and use Defender Offline when unwanted software persists or interferes with normal Windows operation. A SmartScreen message such as “not commonly downloaded” is a reputation signal, not proof that a file is malicious; unfamiliar or unsigned downloads should nevertheless be treated cautiously.
Potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) are handled separately from malware. Microsoft describes PUAs as not being malware. If Defender identifies a PUA, blocking it does not remove it: open the detection in Windows Security and choose the appropriate action. Until you apply an action, the item can remain blocked and present in the detection history.
Do not open an unknown copy: preserve evidence first
If you found diet.exe in a download, email attachment, temporary folder, startup entry, or an unexpected AppData directory, leave it closed while you collect details.

- Record the complete path, including the drive letter and every parent folder.
- Note the file size, creation and modification dates, and the name of the process or shortcut that launched it.
- In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. A missing signature is not conclusive, but a claimed publisher that does not match the software you installed is a serious mismatch.
- Do not upload a confidential executable to a public scanning service. Preserve the file and its hash for your administrator, the software vendor, or an incident-response team.
Identify the owner, signature, and hash
- Locate the file. In File Explorer, use the address bar or search result to open the containing folder. An installed application’s directory, a DOS archive, and a user-profile AppData path imply different owners.
- Check the digital signature. In Properties > Digital Signatures, select the signature and choose Details. A valid signature should identify a publisher you recognize. If Windows reports that the signature cannot be verified, record that result rather than assuming the file is malicious.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. Open Windows PowerShell and run:
Get-FileHash -Path "C:fullpathdiet.exe" -Algorithm SHA256Save the resulting hash with the path and signature status. It lets support staff compare the exact binary without relying on a filename.
- Inspect the parent application. Look for an installed Dovetail product, a known DOS program, or a recent download that explains the executable. In Task Manager, the Details tab can show the process path; do not end a process merely to test it if you have not established what it belongs to.
- Check security history. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and review the detection name, path, and action. A reputation warning or a PUA entry should be interpreted together with the file’s location and publisher.
Run Microsoft Defender before attempting repairs
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates so the security intelligence is current.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan. A full scan can take substantially longer than a quick scan.
- If the detection returns, the process restarts, or Windows behaves as though unwanted software is preventing cleanup, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first; Windows will restart and scan outside the normal desktop, then report the result after startup.
- For a PUA, open the specific item in Protection history and choose Remove, Quarantine, or another action offered by Windows Security. Blocking by itself is not removal.
Do not restore a quarantined executable simply because a program stopped working. First confirm that the file belongs to a trusted application and obtain a clean replacement from that application’s legitimate installer or support channel.
Fix a system-wide .exe problem
If only one known application fails, troubleshoot that application. If many executable files open with the wrong program, show an association error, or fail to launch, treat the pattern as a possible malware-interference symptom rather than as a diet.exe-specific bug.

- Disconnect the affected PC from networks if you suspect active unwanted software, while keeping enough connectivity for security updates if your incident-response policy allows it.
- Run the full and Offline scans described above.
- Use Microsoft’s current executable-association repair guidance instead of downloading a random registry file. Registry changes copied from an unknown website can create additional startup and file-association failures.
- After cleanup, restart Windows and test a harmless built-in executable, then test the affected application. If associations remain broken, create a backup and obtain help from Microsoft or your organization’s administrator before editing the registry.
Fix Dovetail ArchiveManager diet.exe crashes
Dovetail documents a distinct failure mode: an empty, zero-byte directives file can make its DIET utility display “diet.exe has stopped working” or an unhandled Win32 exception. The same documentation describes a dependency problem involving ntwdblib.dll with newer SQL Server installations.
Repair the directives-file failure
- Confirm that the executable is inside the Dovetail installation and that the failing job is a Dovetail import or archive operation. Do not use this procedure for an unexplained AppData copy.
- Find the directives file referenced by the Dovetail job and check its size in Properties. A zero-byte file is the documented trigger.
- Stop the Dovetail job or service before changing configuration files. Preserve a copy of the empty file and the job configuration for rollback.
- Replace the empty file with a valid directives file generated from your Dovetail configuration or supplied by Dovetail support. Do not create arbitrary contents or download a similarly named file from an unofficial site.
- Run the same import or archive operation with a small test set. If it succeeds, process the production job in a controlled window and retain the corrected configuration backup.
Check the database-client dependency
When the directives file is valid but Dovetail still reports a Win32 exception, verify the database client components expected by your Dovetail version. Dovetail specifically notes an ntwdblib.dll dependency issue with newer SQL Server installations. Use the Dovetail installation or support procedure for the correct client library and bitness; do not copy a DLL from an untrusted download site or place it in the Windows system directory as a guess.
Handle the old DOS compression utility
DIET 1.45f is identified as an EOS 16-bit DOS executable-compression tool, not a Windows system component. If the file is part of a known legacy software archive, verify the archive’s source and hash before using it. Because it is a DOS-era program, compatibility with current Windows editions may be limited; run it only in an approved, isolated DOS-compatible environment when your organization still requires it.

If a file claiming to be the DOS utility arrived as a modern installer, a browser download, or an email attachment, the historical name does not establish authenticity. Compare it with a trusted copy, scan it, and ask the owner of the legacy software for confirmation.

A path matching dietdiet.exe below a user’s AppData tree appears in a ChromeLoader-related Sigma detection rule dated 2024-03-21. The rule is a detection pattern, not proof that every file at that path is malicious. It does mean an unexplained AppData instance should not be launched or whitelisted casually.
- Record the path, hash, signature, parent process, scheduled task, service, shortcut, or browser extension that created it.
- Run current Defender intelligence, a full scan, and Defender Offline if the item returns or normal operation is impaired.
- Review browser extensions, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and recently installed programs for an owner you recognize. Remove only items you can identify confidently; preserve suspicious artifacts for support or incident response.
- After Defender takes action, restart and check whether the file is recreated. Recurrence can indicate a remaining startup component or another process restoring it.
Can you delete diet.exe?
Delete it only after you have established that no trusted application needs that specific copy.

Before manual deletion, stop the owning application, make sure the Recycle Bin or quarantine can be restored if a mistake is discovered, and keep the hash and scan result. If Windows says the file is in use, do not defeat the lock with an unknown “unlocker”; identify the owning process and complete the security investigation first.
What to do if you already deleted or quarantined it
- If a trusted Dovetail job stopped working, reinstall or repair Dovetail from its legitimate installer and restore the valid directives configuration. Recheck the required database client components.
- If an old DOS program is missing its compressor, restore it from a verified backup or the original software media rather than downloading a random executable with the same name.
- If Windows itself shows new executable-association errors, finish the Defender scans and use Microsoft’s supported repair guidance. A system restore point or application repair may be appropriate after malware has been ruled out, but do not restore an unverified executable.
- If the file was quarantined as a detection, leave it quarantined while you confirm whether any trusted program depends on it. Security history contains the path and detection details needed for that decision.
When to get specialist help
Escalate to Microsoft support, the Dovetail administrator, or an incident-response professional when the file recreates itself, multiple security tools detect related files, Defender Offline cannot complete, executable associations remain broken after cleanup, or the hash and publisher do not match any software your organization installed. Provide the full path, SHA-256 hash, signature result, detection name, timestamps, and a description of what happened immediately before the first error.

The right fix depends on which program owns diet.exe. Verify the path, publisher, signature, hash, parent application, and Defender result before opening or deleting anything. Repair Dovetail’s directives file or database dependency only when the file is genuinely Dovetail’s; treat an unexplained AppData copy as an investigation and scanning task; and preserve evidence whenever malware or a recurring executable-association failure is possible.
