No Microsoft, vendor, or security-database reference in the available evidence names an exact executable with that filename. Treat any copy as an unidentified third-party program until you verify its full path, publisher signature, hash, parent process, and source. Do not run it, download a replacement from an EXE-index site, or create a Microsoft Defender exclusion merely to silence an alert.
The name is easy to confuse with Windows del (also called erase), a built-in command that deletes files. del is not an executable named delc.exe. The safest response is to investigate the file without opening it, scan with Windows Security, and repair or remove the application that installed it.

What delc.exe is—and what it is not
Windows does not provide a documented system component called delc.exe. Microsoft Learn documents the del command, with erase as an alias, for deleting one or more files. That command is entered in Command Prompt; it is not evidence that a file named delc.exe belongs to Windows.
An unfamiliar filename alone does not prove malware. Microsoft distinguishes unknown software from confirmed malware, while warning that the risk is higher for typical users when the publisher and origin cannot be established. A legitimate application can use an unusual helper name, and a damaged or unwanted program can use the same name. The deciding evidence is the file’s location, signature, hash, parent application, and behavior.

Why the path matters
A copy in a recognizable application folder may be part of that application, but the folder name is not proof of safety. A file launched from a temporary directory, a user profile’s download folder, or an oddly named location deserves closer scrutiny. Compare the location with the application that was installed at the time the error first appeared, and do not execute the file to discover what it does.
Why the name can appear at startup
Windows can show an error for a missing executable when a shortcut, startup entry, scheduled task, service, or parent application still points to an old path. Uninstalling software does not always remove every auto-start reference. In that case, the message is evidence of a stale reference, not proof that a replacement copy should be downloaded.
Is delc.exe safe?
There is no blanket yes-or-no answer without examining the individual file. A digitally signed file from a publisher you intentionally installed is different from an unsigned file launched from a temporary folder. Even a valid signature does not make every behavior desirable, so combine the signature with the path, hash, parent process, and Windows Security results.

- Unknown is not the same as malicious: the absence of a known attribution means you need more evidence.
- Do not test by opening it: execution can trigger the very persistence or changes you are trying to investigate.
- Do not weaken protection: a Defender exclusion prevents Microsoft Defender from checking the excluded item and can leave files and data vulnerable.
- Use provenance: an original installer, trusted backup, or a publisher’s repair function is safer than a same-named download.
Investigate delc.exe without running it
Work through these steps before deleting, restoring, or replacing the file. Record the results so that an application vendor or a security professional can identify the component accurately.
- Locate the file. In File Explorer, search for
delc.exe. Right-click the result, choose Properties, and note the Location, Company, Product name, File description, Original filename, and File version. If several copies exist, record each full path separately. - Check the signature. On the Digital Signatures tab, inspect the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. An unsigned file is not automatically malware, but it provides less evidence of origin. A signature that is invalid, missing, or from a publisher you do not recognize should be treated cautiously.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. Open PowerShell without launching the executable and run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath 'C:fullpathdelc.exe', replacing the path with the exact location. Save the resulting hash with the file’s version and signature details. A hash identifies that precise file; it does not, by itself, certify that the file is safe. - Record the error context. Preserve the complete message, the date and time, and which application or action produced it. A message naming a parent program is often more useful than the filename alone.
- Check the process relationship. If the file is currently listed in Task Manager, right-click the relevant process and choose Open file location only to inspect the folder; do not launch the file. In Task Manager’s details view, note the process name and, where available, the command line and parent process. A process that starts from an unexpected location or is launched by an unfamiliar parent needs further investigation.
- Check automatic launch points. In Task Manager > Startup apps, look for an entry associated with the parent application. Then open Task Scheduler and review the Task Scheduler Library for tasks whose actions reference the exact path. Do not disable a task until you know which application owns it; record its name and action first.
What to record in one place
| Evidence | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Full path | Shows whether the file is in an expected application directory or an unusual location. |
| Company, product, description, original filename | May identify the parent application or reveal that the metadata is blank or inconsistent. |
| Digital-signature status and signer | Provides publisher evidence, although a signature alone is not a safety guarantee. |
| SHA-256 hash | Distinguishes the exact file from other files with the same name. |
| Parent process, startup entry, or scheduled task | Explains why Windows launches the file and where a stale reference may remain. |
| Error text and timestamp | Connects the failure to an installation, update, or other change. |
Scan with Windows Security before making changes
Windows Security is the first manual check when a file is unknown or a Defender alert appears. Keep the file in place while you gather evidence unless Windows Security has already quarantined it; moving or renaming it can make the parent application and startup reference harder to identify.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection and review Current threats and Protection history. Read the detection name, affected path, action taken, and detection time.
- Install the latest security-intelligence updates shown on that page before scanning.
- Choose Scan options and run a Full scan. A Quick scan is useful for an initial check, but a full scan examines more locations.
- If you suspect persistence, tampering, or interference with normal scanning, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
- Use a Custom scan for the exact folder when you need a focused second check, while retaining the full-scan result for system-wide context.
If Defender detects the file, leave it quarantined while you investigate. Do not restore it or add an exclusion unless the publisher, path, and file integrity have been independently verified. Microsoft Support describes an up-to-date, real-time security product such as Microsoft Defender Antivirus as the best protection against malware and potentially unwanted software; an unfamiliar file should not be exempted simply because an application expects it.

Repair the application that installed delc.exe
If the metadata, path, or installer identifies a program you intentionally use, repair that program rather than replacing one executable. Use the publisher’s original installer or trusted installation media, and keep the installer’s version aligned with the installed application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close the affected application.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows builds) to locate the parent program.
- Open its menu and choose Modify, Repair, or the equivalent option if the publisher provides one.
- If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official site or original media.
- After reinstalling, verify that the new file’s path and signature match the application’s normal installation and repeat a Windows Security scan.
If you no longer want the program, uninstall it through Windows Settings instead of deleting only delc.exe. Removing one file can leave broken shortcuts, services, scheduled tasks, or shared components behind.
Fix common delc.exe error messages
“delc.exe not found” or “Windows cannot find delc.exe”
This usually means a shortcut, startup item, scheduled task, or parent application still references a path that no longer exists. Write down the path shown in the message, then search for the owning application in Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Repair or reinstall that application if it is still needed. If it was intentionally removed, confirm that no other program depends on it and then remove the obsolete startup entry or scheduled task after recording its details. Do not download a same-named file to satisfy the message.

“delc.exe cannot start”
Capture the complete dialog and identify which program triggered it. Check whether the path points to a missing file, a quarantined file, or a damaged installation. Repair the parent application, install pending Windows updates, and restart. If the message returns, inspect Task Manager’s Startup apps and Task Scheduler for a remaining reference to the old path.
“delc.exe has stopped working”
Here, the executable was found but crashed. Note the parent application, event time, and full path. Use that application’s repair or reinstall workflow, then apply available Windows and application updates. If the crash occurs only when a particular document, device, or operation is used, preserve that detail for the application’s support channel. A crash report does not establish that the filename itself is the root cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows Defender detects delc.exe
Leave the item quarantined and update security intelligence. Run a Full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline when you suspect persistence or tampering. Review Protection history for related detections and paths. Do not restore the file or create an exclusion merely because an application fails afterward; first verify the publisher and obtain a clean copy through the original installer.

A startup pop-up appears after uninstalling software
The uninstaller may have left an auto-start reference. Confirm that the parent application is no longer required, then remove only the obsolete startup entry or scheduled task that points to the old path. If you still need the program, reinstall it from the original publisher and perform a clean uninstall using its documented procedure. Avoid deleting registry values or scheduled tasks at random, because unrelated software may depend on them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you delete delc.exe?
Deleting the file is appropriate only after you know what installed it and have checked for security detections and dependencies. Microsoft’s del/erase command deletes files and warns that deletion is not retrievable through the command, so use the application’s uninstall or repair process whenever possible.
| Situation | Safer action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Known application, valid publisher evidence, no detection | Repair or uninstall the application; do not delete the executable alone. | Other components may require it, and the installer can clean associated entries. |
| Unknown file, no scan result yet | Leave it untouched, record its evidence, and run Windows Security scans. | Deleting first destroys useful clues and does not address persistence elsewhere. |
| Defender quarantine or confirmed malware | Follow Defender’s quarantine or removal action; do not restore it. | The security product can track related components and recovery actions. |
| Stale startup reference after a confirmed uninstall | Remove the specific obsolete startup or scheduled-task reference after documenting it. | The error is caused by the reference, not necessarily by a remaining file. |
| File needed by a program that now fails | Reinstall that program from its original publisher. | A clean installer restores the complete, matching set of files. |
Where can you download delc.exe safely?
There is no verified, general-purpose download that can be recommended for this exact filename. A file-index website or a random “DLL/EXE fix” page cannot establish that its copy belongs to your application, has the right version, or is free of tampering. Downloading a same-named file can introduce a second problem while leaving the original startup reference unresolved.
Recommended Free Tools
Identify the parent application first. If it is legitimate and still supported, obtain the installer from that application’s official publisher or use trusted original media and then run its repair or reinstall function. If the file came from an unwanted program, remove that program through Windows Settings and scan the system instead of replacing the executable.
When the file may be part of a broader compromise
Escalate the investigation if you see several unfamiliar startup items, repeated detections after removal, disabled security settings, unexpected administrator accounts, or network activity from unknown programs. Disconnecting from a network can limit exposure while you preserve the error text, paths, hashes, and Defender history for an administrator or security professional. Do not wipe or restore files before collecting those details unless your organization’s incident-response procedure says otherwise.
If Windows becomes unstable after a confirmed malicious removal, use a known-good backup or Windows recovery options rather than downloading individual system files. A recovery action should follow the security scan and an assessment of whether personal data may have been exposed.
Quick Recap
Preventing a repeat error
- Keep Windows and security intelligence current.
- Install desktop software only from the publisher or a trusted distribution channel.
- Keep installers or recovery media for applications you rely on.
- Review newly added Startup apps after installing or uninstalling software.
- Do not approve Defender exclusions for unidentified files.
- Record the full path and parent application whenever an unfamiliar executable appears.
- Back up important files so an application can be reinstalled without risking data loss.
