The filename alone is not proof of safety. Check its path, publisher, origin and Defender results before allowing it to run. Most errors come from a missing or inactive ReCap Pro license, invalid scan or control-file paths, insufficient permissions, incorrect command syntax, or a damaged ReCap installation.
What decap.exe is
Autodesk documents the executable as DeCap.exe (the filename may appear as decap.exe in Windows) and includes it with ReCap. It is a command-line import utility that creates ReCap projects from raw source files. ReCap can call it in an automated or background workflow, so seeing a short-lived process while scan data is being imported can be normal.

It is not a Windows system file
Windows does not require decap.exe for startup, sign-in, graphics, networking or ordinary file operations. Its legitimate purpose is tied to Autodesk ReCap. If ReCap is not installed, or if the file appears in a location unrelated to Autodesk software, treat the process as unverified rather than assuming that the name makes it safe.
How licensing works
Autodesk states that DeCap is authorized using the same license as ReCap Pro. A valid, activated ReCap Pro license must already exist before the command can be used; DeCap.exe has no separate activation screen. A licensing error can therefore be caused by ReCap not being activated even when the executable itself is intact.

Documented command forms
Autodesk documents two forms. The first imports one or more scan files:
DeCap.exe --importWithLicense <output folder> <project name> [options] <input scan 1> [input scan 2>] … [input scan N]The second reads the inputs from a control file:

Autodesk Support also documents scripting and automation through DeCap.exe. A scheduled script, batch file or ReCap job may therefore be the reason the process starts without a visible application window.

Is decap.exe safe?
A file in the Autodesk ReCap installation directory that arrived with ReCap is consistent with Autodesk’s documented component. That context supports legitimacy, but it does not prove that every file carrying the name is safe. Malware can use a familiar filename, and a genuine file can be copied to an unexpected directory. Use several checks together.

Check the digital signature in File Explorer
- In Task Manager or File Explorer, identify the running process and choose Open file location if that option is available.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the listed signer and choose Details. Windows should report whether the signature is valid. A missing tab, an invalid signature or a signer unrelated to Autodesk is a reason to stop and quarantine the file rather than launch it.
Do not replace a questionable copy by downloading a similarly named executable from a random DLL or EXE site. You cannot establish its origin or integrity that way.

Understand Windows reputation warnings
Microsoft describes unknown-software warnings as an early-warning system, not proof that a program is malicious. Risk is higher for uncommon programs until reputation information is available. Microsoft’s unwanted-software criteria focus on user control: hiding what the program does, installing other software without clear consent, bypassing consent dialogs, changing settings without permission, or making alarming claims about device health are all warning signs. Those behaviors are not part of Autodesk’s documented import function.
Why decap.exe runs or fails
Normal reasons it runs
- ReCap is importing raw scan files into a new project.
- A ReCap script, batch file or automation job has started an import in the background.
- An administrator or another application launched the documented command line.
Common reasons for an error
- ReCap Pro is missing, not activated or no longer has a valid license.
- The output folder does not exist or the account running the command cannot write to it.
- A scan path or control-file path is mistyped, points to a disconnected drive, or cannot be read.
- The project name contains characters rejected by the surrounding script or the destination filesystem.
- The command omits
--importWithLicense, uses an unsupported option, or places arguments in the wrong order. - DeCap.exe or a dependency in the ReCap installation is damaged or missing after an interrupted update, disk problem or incomplete removal.
- A third-party copy is being blocked, quarantined or launched from an unsafe location.
Safe manual troubleshooting sequence
Work through these steps in order. Do not run an unexpected copy merely to see what it does.

- Record the full path and origin. In Task Manager, right-click the process and use Open file location, or locate the file with File Explorer search. Copy the complete path and note whether it came from an Autodesk installation, a script, a download, an attachment or another source. If the location is temporary or user-writable and you did not expect the file, leave it closed and continue with the security checks.
- Verify the publisher signature. Open Properties → Digital Signatures and inspect the signer and signature status. A valid Autodesk signature supports, but does not by itself prove, that the file is safe. Treat a missing, invalid or unrelated signature as suspicious and do not attempt to repair it by downloading a replacement from an unofficial site.
- Scan before testing. Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, then run a full scan. If unwanted software persists, Microsoft recommends a Defender Offline scan, which checks the system outside the normal Windows session. A suspicious file can also be submitted to Microsoft for analysis through its security workflow. If Defender quarantines the file, keep it quarantined while you determine whether ReCap itself needs repair.
- Confirm ReCap Pro and activation. Open ReCap normally and verify that ReCap Pro is installed and activated under the account or license used by the workstation. DeCap.exe cannot activate itself. If ReCap reports an expired, unavailable or inactive license, resolve that condition in ReCap before retrying the import.
- Check the destination. Create or select the intended output folder and confirm that it exists. Test write access by creating and deleting a small text file there. Avoid protected locations if the automation runs under a standard account. Ensure that the project name is valid for Windows and does not contain characters rejected by the script or destination filesystem.
- Check every input path. Confirm that each scan file exists, is readable and is connected to the computer. Use full paths while troubleshooting, especially when a scheduled task may start with a different working directory. If a path contains spaces, quote it in the calling script. For control-file imports, open the control file and verify each referenced scan path and any required option.
- Retry the documented syntax. Start with a small test import and the documented
--importWithLicenseform. For example:

These examples are intended to show quoting and argument order, not to replace the syntax for a particular scan format. If the small test works, add other scans one at a time so that a bad path or unreadable file is easy to identify.

If the command works interactively but fails from a scheduled task or batch file, compare the account, mapped drives and working directory. Use accessible full paths rather than drive letters that exist only in an interactive session. Confirm that the task has permission to read the inputs and write the output.
- Repair the ReCap installation. If the legitimate file is missing, damaged or reporting dependency errors, use Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select Autodesk ReCap and choose the available repair or modify option. If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall ReCap and reinstall it from Autodesk’s official installer or account. Verify activation again afterward. Do not copy decap.exe from a third-party download to fill a missing file.
- Rescan after repair. Run Defender again after reinstalling or restoring the application. A clean scan, a valid Autodesk signature and a path inside the new ReCap installation provide stronger evidence than any single check alone.
What particular errors usually indicate

The exact wording can vary by ReCap release, command wrapper and Windows configuration. Use the symptom to choose the first check; do not infer that every error means the executable is malware.
Can you delete decap.exe?
Do not delete a working copy from the Autodesk ReCap installation folder if you still use ReCap or any script that imports scans. Removing it can break automated project creation and may leave the installation inconsistent. If you suspect that copy is compromised, quarantine it with Defender and repair or reinstall ReCap rather than deleting individual files.
If you no longer need ReCap, uninstall the application through Windows’ standard Apps settings, then run another security scan. Removing ReCap as a whole is safer than manually deleting one executable because the uninstaller can remove associated components and registrations. A decap.exe found outside ReCap should be handled according to its evidence: verify the signature and origin, scan it, and quarantine or remove it only after you have identified what placed it there and whether another legitimate program depends on it.
Avoid technical-support scams
A pop-up claiming that decap.exe or Windows errors require immediate payment, a phone call or remote access is not a normal ReCap licensing message. Microsoft states that genuine Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers. Close the page or window, do not call the displayed number, and do not install remote-control software at the caller’s request. Use ReCap’s own licensing screens and Microsoft Defender for verification.

When the problem needs escalation
Contact Autodesk support when ReCap Pro is activated but DeCap consistently rejects valid inputs, when a documented command fails after a clean repair, or when the behavior depends on a particular ReCap release or scan format. Provide the exact command, sanitized input and output paths, ReCap version, Windows edition, activation status and complete error text. Do not send raw scan data or license credentials unless Autodesk requests them through an official support channel.
