You aim weapons, move through a three-dimensional map, use hero abilities and melee attacks, and make split-second positioning decisions. At the same time, lanes, troopers, souls, item purchases, ability upgrades and team objectives determine which side gains power and reaches the enemy defenses.
Valve currently distributes access through friend invites from playtesters. The Steam listing gives no release date (“To be announced”) and marks system requirements as still to be determined, so the details below describe the current design rather than a finished, stable product.

What kind of game is Deadlock?
Deadlock is easiest to understand as a shooter played inside a MOBA match structure. The shooter layer governs how you execute an encounter: aim, fire, move, use abilities, choose an angle and decide whether to fight at close range. The MOBA layer governs why that encounter matters: lanes produce resources, resources buy power, upgrades change your hero, and coordinated teams use that power to take space and attack objectives.
Valve’s Steam page lists both “MOBA” and “Third-Person Shooter” among the game’s user-defined tags. Neither label is merely marketing shorthand. A player who concentrates only on gun accuracy can still lose by falling behind in souls or arriving late to an objective. A player who farms efficiently can still be punished for poor aim, exposed positioning or a mistimed ability.

The basic match loop
- Contest lane space. Move through a lane, fight enemy heroes when the opportunity is favorable and help your side’s troopers survive.
- Collect resources. Lane activity and other map actions provide souls, the currency that supports purchases and progression.
- Convert souls into power. Buy items and reach ability milestones that improve what your hero can do.
- Use the power advantage. Take a better fight, defend your own progress or rotate to influence another part of the map.
- Advance toward defenses and objectives. Winning a fight matters most when it creates room to push, secure an objective or deny the opponent’s next resource window.
A kill is therefore one possible result of a good decision, not the only definition of success. Leaving a valuable wave unattended, arriving after a fight has already been decided or giving up map position for a low-value chase can cost more than the elimination is worth.
How the shooter gameplay works
Aiming and weapon choice
Every fight includes conventional shooter questions: can you land shots, maintain a useful angle and keep enough space to survive the opponent’s response? Weapon combat is combined with hero-specific abilities, so an accurate player must also recognize when an ability creates an opening, interrupts an enemy plan or makes a target easier to hit.
Positioning has two jobs. It determines the shots you can take, and it determines how safely you can retreat when the exchange turns against you. High ground, cover, lane geometry and routes between lanes all affect whether a weapon advantage can actually be applied. A technically strong aim duel is still a bad choice if it leaves your team unable to contest the next objective.

Movement, abilities and commitment
Deadlock’s heroes combine guns with movement and active abilities. The useful question is not simply “Which ability does the most damage?” It is “What does this ability let the team do next?” An ability may secure a lane, force an enemy away from cover, protect a rotation, start a fight or provide the time needed to escape.

Close-range attacks add another timing layer. The mechanics description describes parrying a committed melee attack: a correctly timed parry can stun the attacker and create a punish opportunity. Because the parry depends on reading a committed attack rather than pressing it at random, melee encounters reward anticipation and discipline. Do not treat it as a universal answer to every close-range threat; its value depends on timing, distance and what both heroes can do immediately afterward.
Why execution and strategy are inseparable
In a traditional shooter, a superior angle and better aim may be enough to win an exchange. In Deadlock, the same exchange is shaped by item effects, ability progression, soul income and whether teammates can arrive. A mechanically gifted player can create an advantage, but the team must turn that advantage into resources or map progress before it disappears.
The MOBA layer: lanes, troopers and souls
Lanes create predictable pressure
Lanes are the recurring routes where teams meet enemy heroes and troopers. They provide a place to gather resources and a path toward enemy defenses. Clearing a lane is not a chore that happens outside the “real” game; it determines which team has room to move and which side must respond.
Troopers help establish that pressure. Their presence gives you targets to manage, cover for movement and a reason to decide whether to stay, rotate or contest an opponent. A lane that is pushed toward the enemy can open a safer route forward, while a neglected lane can force someone on your team to defend instead of joining a fight.

Souls are the economic engine
Souls fund item purchases and hero progression. That makes resource collection a strategic trade-off. Staying in lane may increase your income, but it can also mean missing a favorable team fight. Rotating to help an ally may win space, but the trip has an opportunity cost if you abandon a wave at the wrong time.
The current mechanics description distinguishes a soul picked up from the ground from a contested flying soul orb. It also says trooper last hits are no longer the gate that determines whether souls are generated. Older beginner guides may therefore give instructions that no longer match the current build. Verify the live in-game behavior before relying on detailed last-hit advice, especially while the game remains in development.
Map position is part of the economy
Income is not only a number on the scoreboard. Safe access to a lane, a route to an objective and the ability to move first can all be worth souls because they improve your next decision. Conversely, an apparently profitable farm can be dangerous if it exposes you to a collapse or leaves the rest of the map without support.
Items and hero progression
What souls buy
Souls support an item system and ability progression. Items may be active or passive, so a purchase can either change your regular statistics and effects or add a button that must be used at the right moment. Some items can be imbued onto an ability, linking the purchase to a particular part of your hero’s kit.

This creates several valid kinds of value:
- Immediate fight value: an effect that helps you survive or win the next engagement.
- Scaling value: a purchase that becomes stronger as your hero reaches later progression milestones.
- Utility value: mobility, control, defense or information that enables a play rather than simply increasing damage.
- Counter value: an answer to the opposing team’s most dangerous weapon, ability or style of engagement.
The largest displayed damage increase is not automatically the correct choice. A defensive or active item can be better if it lets you stay alive long enough to use your abilities, escape a counterattack or hold a lane until teammates arrive.
Ability unlocks and upgrades
Heroes also gain power through ability unlocks and upgrades. The timing of a milestone matters: an upgrade can change whether your team is ready to contest an objective, whether an enemy can be pressured out of lane or whether a risky rotation is acceptable.
Think of an item and an ability upgrade as one decision chain. If an ability is your reliable way to start fights, an item that improves its impact may be more valuable than a generic damage purchase. If the opponent can interrupt that ability, a defensive or utility option may produce more practical power than another offensive effect.

The two columns are not separate game modes. A purchase changes the outcome of a gunfight, while the result of that gunfight changes who can collect the next wave or reach the next objective. Strong play comes from connecting the decisions rather than maximizing one column in isolation.
What a useful decision looks like in a match
Before leaving a lane
- Check whether your lane pressure is pushing toward a safe or dangerous position.
- Estimate the souls you will gain by staying versus the value of helping elsewhere.
- Identify the route back to safety if the enemy collapses while you rotate.
- Tell teammates when you are leaving so they can adjust rather than assume you are available.
Before buying
- Ask what is killing you or your team: burst damage, sustained fire, crowd control, melee access or lack of mobility.
- Decide whether the next important event is a fight, a defense or a resource window.
- Prefer a purchase that changes that event’s outcome over one that merely improves a tooltip number.
- Check whether an active effect requires a keybind, timing practice or coordination before spending souls on it.
Before committing to a fight
- Locate your teammates and the nearest route for reinforcements.
- Track the enemy’s major abilities and whether a committed melee attack can be parried.
- Know where you will retreat if the first burst does not secure a target.
- Consider what the team receives after a win: lane access, souls, an objective or safe territory.
Access, release status and changing features
Valve’s official Steam listing describes Deadlock as “a multiplayer game in early development.” It currently says access is limited to friend invites via playtesters, lists the release date as “To be announced” and marks system requirements as still to be determined. Those statements apply to the listing at the time of writing, not to a promised launch schedule.
Valve continues to change the game. A Steam community update dated January 30, 2026 included hero-ban and Street Brawl changes, and a later community post showed a hero becoming available in-game on October 9, 2026. These updates demonstrate that heroes, modes, availability and balance values can move quickly.
A September 30, 2026 report from PC Gamer described Valve continuing work on core systems and exploring areas such as progression, hero and hideout customization, item changes and alternative modes. Those are development directions, not guarantees that every feature will ship or remain in its reported form.

- Open the current Deadlock page on Steam and check whether your account can receive an invitation.
- Read the latest official update notes for hero availability, modes and major mechanical changes.
- Do not rely on an old build’s balance values, roster assumptions or last-hit instructions.
- Check the live system-requirements section when Valve publishes one; it is currently marked as still to be determined.
Is Deadlock a shooter or a MOBA?
It is both, but neither description is complete by itself. The third-person shooter framework determines how you aim, move and execute abilities. The MOBA framework determines how lanes, souls, purchases, upgrades and objectives create a long-term advantage. Calling it only a shooter misses the economy and map strategy; calling it only a MOBA misses the precision and timing required in fights.
Who will find the design demanding?
Players coming from shooters may need to learn that a won duel is not automatically useful if it costs a wave or leaves an objective undefended. Players coming from MOBAs may need to learn that a good build cannot compensate for missed shots, exposed movement or a failed parry. Everyone must learn to switch between immediate execution and resource planning, often within the same few seconds.
That tension is the point of Deadlock’s design. The game asks you to win the present encounter while preserving the conditions that make the next encounter favorable.
