Dead Space is Electronic Arts’ science-fiction horror video-game series about engineer Isaac Clarke and the disaster aboard the mining starship USG Ishimura. The numbered main games are Dead Space, Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3. New players can begin with either the 2008 original or the 2023 remake of that first story, then continue with the numbered sequels.
What Dead Space is
Dead Space is a game series rather than a single title. Its central story starts when Isaac Clarke, an engineer, arrives aboard the mining starship USG Ishimura for a repair assignment. Instead of a routine maintenance job, he finds a ship in catastrophic trouble. The damaged vessel, Isaac’s practical engineering background and the unexplained crisis create the series’ defining combination: an isolated space setting, a mystery to investigate and a fight to survive.

Electronic Arts describes the 2008 release as an action-horror shooter and the 2023 release as a science-fiction survival-horror remake. Those labels distinguish Dead Space from a conventional military shooter or a purely cinematic science-fiction story. The series uses a futuristic setting to deliver horror, while Isaac’s role as an engineer keeps the opening grounded in repairs, systems and emergency problem-solving rather than in the life of a professional soldier.

The first game’s setup is intentionally easy to understand without knowing any later plot: a repair crew reaches a troubled mining ship, communications and normal operations have broken down, and Isaac must deal with the consequences while trying to understand what happened. The Ishimura is not just a backdrop; it is the location where the series’ first mystery and survival problem unfold.
#1 Best Overall
The Ishimura premise, without spoilers
The USG Ishimura is a mining starship, and Isaac is sent there because something has gone wrong with its systems. The assignment gives the story a practical starting point. He is not introduced as someone seeking a supernatural adventure or a military campaign. He is an engineer responding to a technical emergency.
That setup matters because it explains why the first Dead Space story can move between investigation and danger. A repair mission naturally raises questions: what failed, why did communications stop, and what happened to the people aboard the ship? The horror grows out of those unanswered questions and the ship’s isolation. You do not need prior knowledge of the series, its fictional universe or its later entries to understand the initial situation.
For a first playthrough, it is best to preserve that uncertainty. Descriptions of later events, creatures, revelations or the endings of the games can change how the opening works. A spoiler-light introduction is enough: Isaac reaches the Ishimura on a repair assignment and discovers that surviving the ship will require more than fixing equipment.

| Entry | What it is | Isaac’s story role |
|---|---|---|
| Dead Space (2008) | The original release and the first game in the main story. | Introduces Isaac Clarke, the USG Ishimura repair mission and the series’ central mystery. |
| Dead Space (2023) | A remake of the first game’s story, not a fourth numbered entry. | Retells Isaac’s Ishimura story while keeping the original vision as its foundation and adding changes intended to fit the broader universe. |
| Dead Space 2 | The next numbered main game. | Continues Isaac’s story after the first game. |
| Dead Space 3 | The third numbered main game. | Continues Isaac’s story and places him alongside Sergeant John Carver on Tau Volantis. |
Electronic Arts’ catalog identifies both the 2008 classic and the later remake, while its descriptions of the numbered sequels place Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3 after the first story in Isaac’s continuing arc. This table is a guide to the principal numbered games, not an exhaustive list of every story set in the fictional universe. The available official descriptions do not establish a complete chronology for spin-offs, comics, films or novels.
Dead Space (2008): the original starting point
The 2008 game is the original release that established the series. Electronic Arts’ description presents Isaac as an engineer assigned to repair communications aboard the Ishimura. Choosing it means experiencing the first game in its original release form, with the presentation and design decisions associated with that version.
Rank #2
The original is a sensible choice when you want historical context, prefer to begin with the game that introduced the series or want to see the story before its later remake. It is also the clearest option for readers who use “the original Dead Space” to mean the 2008 release rather than the story itself.
Do not treat the original and remake as interchangeable labels. They tell the first Dead Space story in different releases, and Electronic Arts describes the newer game as a remake rather than as a renamed port. If you discuss a guide, walkthrough or purchase, identify the year so that readers know which version you mean.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDead Space (2023): the modern remake
The 2023 release is a remake of the science-fiction survival-horror classic. Electronic Arts announced it for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a release date of January 27, 2023. It is therefore a modern retelling of the first game, not Dead Space 4 and not a sequel to Dead Space 3.
EA says the remake stays faithful to the original vision while adding improvements. The remake’s story team also described changes made to fit continuity with the broader universe. That wording supports a useful beginner distinction: the remake preserves the identity of the Ishimura story, but it should not be described as a frame-for-frame copy or as the same release with a new date.
The development team’s stated motivation was to let a new generation experience the feeling of the 2008 game. Creative Director Roman Campos-Oriola expressed it this way: “And we wanted a whole new generation of gamers to experience the same feeling we had back in 2008!” That is a statement about the team’s purpose, not an independent judgment about the remake’s quality.

Original or remake: which should a beginner choose?
There is no single mandatory starting version. Both choices begin with Isaac’s first story and the Ishimura repair mission. The right decision depends on whether you want the original release or a remake designed for the newer console generation and PC.

| Question | 2008 original | 2023 remake |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | The classic first Dead Space release. | A remake of the first game’s story. |
| How does EA position it? | An action-horror shooter and the original game. | A science-fiction survival-horror remake that remains faithful to the original vision while adding improvements. |
| When did it launch? | 2008. | January 27, 2023. |
| Platforms established by EA’s announcement | The cited announcement does not establish a platform list for this version. | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. |
| Best fit for | Players who want the original release and its historical context. | Players who want the modern remake of the opening story on one of its listed platforms. |
Choose the 2008 version if “original release” is the deciding factor. Choose the 2023 version if you want the remake and own a listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or PC system. Neither choice makes the other irrelevant, and neither should be presented as the only legitimate way to enter the series.
Where to start if you are completely new
Start with the 2023 remake for a modern entry
The remake is the straightforward recommendation for someone who wants the first story in its newer form. It is explicitly a remake, so you are still beginning with Isaac’s introduction and the Ishimura crisis rather than jumping into an unexplained sequel. Confirm the platform and edition before buying: EA’s announcement establishes PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, while prices, store listings and edition availability can change.
Start with the 2008 game for the original experience
The 2008 release is the better fit when you want to experience the game as originally released. It gives you the foundational version of the premise and lets you see the story before the remake’s continuity adjustments and improvements. The available official material does not provide a current store or price comparison, so availability should be checked for the platform you intend to use.
Do not begin with Dead Space 2 or Dead Space 3 unless you accept missing the introduction
The sequels continue Isaac’s story. Starting with them may leave you without the context established by the first Ishimura mission. For a first-time route, play one version of the first game before moving to Dead Space 2, then Dead Space 3.
Rank #4
The recommended order for Isaac’s main story
- Dead Space (2008) or Dead Space (2023). Pick one version of the first story. The remake is not a separate fourth chapter.
- Dead Space 2. This is the next numbered game and continues Isaac’s story.
- Dead Space 3. This continues the numbered sequence, with Isaac joined by Sergeant John Carver on Tau Volantis.
If you later decide to compare the first game’s two releases, you can do so after completing one of them. Playing both before the sequels is optional; the essential beginner route is to understand the first story once and then proceed through the numbered continuation.
How the series’ genre labels help you set expectations
Science-fiction horror
The science-fiction side comes from the setting: Isaac is dealing with a mining starship, ship systems and an emergency far from ordinary ground-based life. The horror side comes from the ship’s catastrophic condition, its isolation and the danger Isaac encounters while trying to determine what happened.
Survival horror
EA uses “science-fiction survival horror” for the 2023 remake. For a beginner, that signals that the story is built around surviving a hostile situation and uncovering its mystery, rather than simply moving through a linear action spectacle. The label does not by itself specify every mechanic, difficulty setting or content warning, so consult the platform’s current rating information if those details matter to you.
Action-horror shooter
EA describes the 2008 original as an action-horror shooter. That wording explains why the first game can combine frightening circumstances with direct combat-oriented action. It does not make the game a conventional military shooter: Isaac’s identity and the repair mission remain central to the premise.

What to know before choosing a version
- Year matters. “Dead Space” can mean the 2008 original or the 2023 remake. Include the year whenever you ask for help or buy a guide.
- The remake is not Dead Space 4. It retells the first game’s story.
- Platform matters. EA’s listed platforms for the remake are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
- Story order matters. The numbered continuation is Dead Space 2, then Dead Space 3.
- Availability changes. Current prices, stock, storefront listings and edition names were not established by the official descriptions used here, so verify them at the store you plan to use.
- Keep early searches spoiler-safe. The Ishimura crisis is designed to raise questions. Search for the version, platform or release year first, and add plot terms only when you are ready for story details.
Common beginner misunderstandings
“Dead Space” is one game
It is a series with three numbered main entries and two distinct releases of the first game covered here. Saying “the Dead Space game” without a year can create confusion between the 2008 original and the 2023 remake.
Best Value
- Classic light gun rebuilt with modern graphics
- Fast-paced zombie shooting action with multiple endings
- Cooperative game mode for shared action
- Updated controls optimized for PS4
- Replayable game with scoring and updates
The 2023 release is a sequel
It is a remake of the first game. The next numbered chapter is Dead Space 2.
You must play both first-game versions
You do not need to complete both to understand the main route. Pick the original or remake, then continue with the numbered sequels. Playing both is a comparison choice, not a prerequisite.
The first game is only about repairing a ship
The repair assignment is the opening situation, not the entire explanation of the series. Isaac arrives to address a technical problem and finds a broader catastrophe. That escalation is why the premise works as both an engineering assignment and a horror story.

Bottom line for a new player
Dead Space is a science-fiction horror series centered on engineer Isaac Clarke, whose repair assignment aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura turns into a fight to survive and a mystery to solve. Start with either the 2008 original or the 2023 remake; choose the original for the first-release experience and the remake for the modern retelling on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or PC. Then follow Isaac’s main story in numbered order: Dead Space 2, followed by Dead Space 3 and its Tau Volantis setting with Sergeant John Carver.
