DC dimming changes the electrical power delivered to OLED pixels instead of reducing brightness primarily by rapidly switching them on and off. That can reduce the periodic modulation associated with pulse-width modulation (PWM), but it does not guarantee zero flicker at every brightness level. Phones may combine both methods, and the setting can affect low-brightness color and gradient quality.
What DC dimming means on an OLED screen
OLED pixels produce their own light. Each pixel contains light-emitting components whose output depends on the electrical drive supplied by the display circuitry. In a simplified DC-dimming implementation, the phone changes that drive—usually by varying voltage, current, or both—so the pixels emit more or less light continuously.

Xiaomi describes the feature this way in its support documentation: “DC dimming directly adjusts the power supplied to the display’s light-emitting components.” That is a manufacturer description of its implementation, not a universal specification for every OLED panel.

PWM drives the pixels at a chosen level, then switches emission on and off rapidly. Brightness is controlled by the proportion of each cycle during which the pixels are on. A longer on-time produces a brighter average image; a shorter on-time produces a dimmer one.

The table describes the underlying approaches, not a promise about a particular phone. Panel design, driver electronics, software and brightness level all affect the measured result.
How changing the drive can reduce OLED flicker
Flicker in this context is a change in emitted light over time. With PWM, the light output follows the switching cycle: emission is present during the “on” portion and absent or greatly reduced during the “off” portion. Even when the average brightness looks steady, a light sensor, camera or a sensitive observer may detect that periodic variation.
If a display lowers brightness by reducing the electrical drive without repeatedly interrupting emission, that particular PWM pattern is reduced or removed while the screen is operating in DC mode. The result can be less periodic brightness modulation at that setting. “Can reduce” is the important qualification: the display may still use other forms of temporal control, and a phone may change methods as brightness changes.

Flicker measurements are also condition-dependent. The frequency, modulation depth, display content, refresh mode, automatic-brightness behavior and test instrument can all change what is recorded. A DC label therefore identifies a control strategy, not a universal flicker measurement.
Why a phone can use both DC and PWM
OLED panels do not behave identically at every drive level. At very low brightness, reducing current continuously can make pixels less predictable or cause color and uniformity problems. A manufacturer may therefore use PWM in one range and DC control in another to balance image quality and modulation.
POCO X6 Pro: a documented hybrid example
Xiaomi’s support description for the POCO X6 Pro says the phone uses high-frequency PWM at low brightness and DC dimming at high brightness. This is a concrete example of why a menu item or marketing phrase should not be interpreted as “DC dimming at every level.” A user who enables an anti-flicker option may still encounter PWM below a particular brightness threshold.
What “high-frequency” does and does not tell you
High-frequency PWM means the switching cycles occur more rapidly than with a low-frequency implementation. It does not state the modulation depth, the exact frequency at each brightness, or how an individual user will respond. It also does not prove that the phone uses DC dimming elsewhere unless the manufacturer documents that behavior.
Image-quality tradeoffs at low brightness
Continuous drive reduction can have a visible cost. Xiaomi warns that enabling DC dimming on the Xiaomi 14 can cause color-gradient loss at low brightness. Smooth transitions—such as a gray shadow, a sky gradient or a dark interface background—may appear less even, with banding, tint or altered tonal steps.

The warning is device-specific and comes from the manufacturer. It should not be generalized to every OLED phone. If the screen looks worse after enabling the option, Xiaomi suggests changing the anti-flicker mode back to Regular or increasing screen brightness. Raising brightness can move the panel into a range where its drive behavior is more uniform, although that may increase room illumination or battery use.
What to inspect when testing a setting
- Open a neutral gray image and look for patches or tint changes across the panel.
- Use a smooth gradient from black to white and check for new bands or abrupt steps.
- Examine dark text and icons against a uniform background for crawling or uneven areas.
- Repeat the check at the brightness level you actually use, because behavior can change across the range.
- Compare the same content with the anti-flicker or DC option on and off, without changing refresh-rate or color-profile settings at the same time.
What current evidence says about eye comfort and health
Reducing a measured modulation pattern is not the same as proving a health benefit. The available evidence described here does not justify saying that DC dimming prevents eye strain, that PWM is dangerous, or that either method is universally safe or harmful.
A 2025 IEEE conference abstract reported a 45-minute comparison at 45–55 nits. Under those experimental conditions, the PWM condition produced greater effects on ocular imaging quality than the DC condition, but the study found no statistically significant difference in its visual-fatigue indices. Those figures describe the protocol, not how common a reaction is in the population. One abstract also does not establish clinical advice or predict every person’s experience.

How to check whether your phone really uses DC dimming
- Read the exact model’s documentation. Look for the manufacturer’s description of “DC dimming,” “anti-flicker,” “flicker reduction” or similar controls. Confirm the model and regional software version; names and behavior can differ.
- Find the display control. Common locations include Settings, Display, Brightness or a reading/eye-comfort submenu. The label may be an anti-flicker mode rather than a switch explicitly called DC dimming.
- Record the available modes. Note whether the choices are Regular, Anti-flicker, DC dimming, high-frequency PWM or an automatic option. Do not assume that an automatic setting stays in one method across the whole brightness range.
- Test at several brightness levels. Check low, medium and high settings while keeping refresh rate, color mode and adaptive brightness fixed. A hybrid implementation may change method as the slider moves.
- Check image quality. Use gray fields and gradients to identify banding, tint or uniformity changes. If artifacts appear, follow the manufacturer’s documented alternative—on Xiaomi 14, that means returning anti-flicker to Regular or raising brightness.
- Use the setting that works in your environment. Test in the room where you normally use the phone. Ambient light changes the brightness you need and can alter how noticeable modulation or gradient defects are.
A phone’s settings menu cannot by itself provide a flicker measurement. For that, you need a documented test method and suitable instrumentation.

IEC 62341-6-3
IEC 62341-6-3 is the identified standard for OLED image-quality measurement methods, and its scope includes flicker among the image-quality aspects it addresses. The IEC catalog record notes a later corrected edition and indicates that the 2012 base publication was withdrawn. Before calling a test “IEC-compliant,” verify the applicable edition and follow the complete procedure, including the specified equipment and conditions.
IEEE 1789-2015
IEEE 1789-2015 addresses recommended practices for modulation of current in high-brightness LEDs. It is not a clinical OLED-phone safety guarantee. Its catalog record marked the standard inactive-reserved on March 26, 2026. Applying its limits directly to a modern OLED handset without checking scope would overstate what the document establishes.

Standards can make measurements more comparable, but they do not turn one number into a prediction of personal comfort. Any comparison should identify the brightness, refresh mode, test waveform, modulation depth, instrument and standard edition used.

A practical framework for comparing two OLED phones
When deciding between display modes or devices, compare documented behavior rather than the name of a feature.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the manufacturer specify DC, PWM or a hybrid strategy? | A hybrid phone may use different methods at low and high brightness. |
| At which brightness levels does each method operate? | A setting that helps at medium brightness may not apply at the lowest level. |
| How was flicker measured? | Numbers collected with different brightness, refresh and instrumentation conditions are not directly equivalent. |
| Does low-brightness grayscale or gradient quality change? | DC operation can trade modulation reduction for visible banding, tint or non-uniformity. |
| What controls are available? | Separate Regular, Anti-flicker or automatic modes give you more ways to adapt the display. |
| How does the screen feel in ordinary use? | Your comfort under real lighting and brightness conditions is more useful than a label alone, while still not proving a medical effect. |
Do not compare a laboratory result from one phone with an unspecified measurement from another as though they were equivalent. The conditions are part of the result.
Common misconceptions
“DC dimming eliminates flicker.”
It can reduce the periodic modulation created by PWM while the panel is actually operating in DC mode. A phone may switch to PWM at another brightness, use a hybrid algorithm or retain other temporal modulation.
“An anti-flicker toggle guarantees the same behavior everywhere.”
The control’s scope is determined by the manufacturer’s implementation. Check the model documentation and test more than one brightness level.
“PWM is automatically harmful.”
The evidence summarized here does not support a universal safety or harm claim. A 2025 experiment found differences in ocular imaging quality under its conditions but no statistically significant difference in visual-fatigue indices.
“DC dimming is always better for picture quality.”
Not necessarily. Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 14 warning about low-brightness color-gradient loss shows that reducing modulation can introduce an image-quality compromise.
Bottom line for everyday use
DC dimming is an electrical brightness-control method: it lowers the drive supplied to OLED emitters instead of relying solely on rapid on/off pulses. That can reduce PWM-related flicker, but the result depends on the phone, brightness range and software mode. Treat “DC dimming” and “anti-flicker” as settings to evaluate, not guarantees. Check the manufacturer’s documented ranges, inspect gradients at your normal brightness, and choose the mode that gives you the best balance of modulation behavior, image quality and personal comfort.
