Model compute is the arithmetic performed on those values—such as matrix multiplication, convolution, attention or activation functions. An AI operation must do both, and either can determine its runtime.
If moving data takes longer than performing the arithmetic, the operation is memory-bound; adding more arithmetic capacity alone will not make it faster. If arithmetic throughput is the constraint, it is compute-bound. The same model can contain both kinds of operations, and the result changes with the implementation, data reuse and hardware.

Data movement and model compute are different jobs
Think of an AI operation as a three-part pipeline:
- Read: fetch inputs, weights and any required state.
- Compute: perform arithmetic on those values.
- Write: store outputs or intermediate results for the next operation.
The second step is model compute. The first and third steps are data movement. In a real processor these activities can overlap, so elapsed time is not simply the sum of every transfer and every instruction. A useful first approximation is that the slower limiting activity—memory access, arithmetic throughput or latency—sets the pace.
Data movement is broader than copying a file into a server. It includes reads and writes through the processor’s memory hierarchy, transfers between a GPU and host memory, movement between a GPU and storage, and communication among accelerators in a distributed training or inference system.

| Aspect | Data movement | Model compute |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Moves bytes to the place where they are needed and stores results. | Performs arithmetic or logical operations on those bytes. |
| Typical resources | Cache and memory bandwidth, storage bandwidth, DMA engines and accelerator interconnects. | Arithmetic units, tensor or vector units, and instruction issue capacity. |
| Common limit | Not enough bandwidth, poor locality, transfer latency or communication overhead. | Insufficient operations per second or inefficient use of arithmetic units. |
| What faster hardware helps | Higher bandwidth, shorter paths, better locality and more effective reuse. | Higher sustained arithmetic throughput and an implementation that can use it. |
A processor can advertise substantial peak compute capability while remaining underused if operands arrive too slowly. Conversely, a workload can have excellent data delivery but still take a long time because it requires more arithmetic than the processor can sustain.
Where AI data actually moves
Inside the memory hierarchy
Values may pass through several levels: registers and on-chip caches, high-bandwidth accelerator memory, system memory and, eventually, persistent storage. Moving a value from a nearby level generally costs less time and bandwidth than fetching it from a farther one. Reusing a value while it is already close to the arithmetic units avoids repeated transfers.
For a matrix operation, for example, weights and activations are loaded into a fast working area, consumed by arithmetic units and written back. If tiles are chosen so that values are reused before they leave that working area, the operation moves fewer bytes for the same mathematical result.

Between host, accelerator and storage
Many systems keep data or checkpoints in storage and process it on an accelerator. Reading a batch from storage, transferring it across an interconnect and placing it in accelerator memory are all data movement. A GPU can be perfectly capable of the required arithmetic yet wait for the next batch if the input path cannot keep up. NVIDIA’s GPUDirect Storage documentation describes this storage-to-GPU transfer path as a distinct performance concern.
Across accelerators
Distributed training and large-model inference split parameters, activations or gradients across multiple accelerators. Each device then exchanges information with peers. Inter-accelerator communication can become the bottleneck even when every device has unused arithmetic capacity. The relevant bandwidth is the bandwidth of the actual links and software path, not merely the peak arithmetic specification of each accelerator.
Memory-bound versus compute-bound
What memory-bound means
An operation is memory-bound when loading and storing its data takes longer than the associated calculations under the conditions being measured. The arithmetic units may appear idle because they are waiting for operands. Increasing the number or speed of arithmetic units does not materially improve this routine unless the data path also improves.

Typical symptoms include low arithmetic-unit utilization, high memory-bandwidth utilization and runtime that changes substantially when tensor layout, cache behavior or batch size changes. A simple element-wise operation often has this character because it performs little arithmetic for each value read and written.
What compute-bound means
An operation is compute-bound when its arithmetic work is the limiting resource. Data arrives quickly enough, but the processor needs more cycles to complete the calculations. In that case, faster arithmetic units, a more suitable instruction path or an algorithm that performs fewer operations can help.
Large matrix multiplications can become compute-bound when data is reused effectively and the implementation keeps the arithmetic units supplied. The same mathematical layer can become memory-bound with a different shape, layout, precision or batch size.
Latency is a third practical constraint
Bandwidth describes how many bytes can be transferred per unit of time; latency describes how long it takes for a particular request or synchronization to complete. A workload with many small, dependent transfers can be latency-limited even when measured aggregate bandwidth is not saturated. NVIDIA’s GPU performance guidance treats latency as a separate possible limit, so labeling every slowdown as either bandwidth-bound or compute-bound is incomplete.
Arithmetic intensity connects bytes to operations
Arithmetic intensity is the number of compute operations performed per byte moved. It provides a bridge between the algorithm and the hardware:

Low arithmetic intensity means that relatively few calculations are done for every byte fetched or stored. Such work tends to run into a memory-bandwidth ceiling. High arithmetic intensity means that many calculations can be performed while each value is reused, making peak arithmetic throughput more likely to be the ceiling. NVIDIA’s hardware guidance uses this relationship to explain why workloads fall on different sides of the memory-versus-compute trade-off.
Arithmetic intensity is not a permanent label attached to a model. It depends on what is counted as a transfer, how the kernel is implemented, whether values are reused from cache or shared memory, tensor dimensions, precision, sparsity, fusion and the hardware’s memory hierarchy. Two implementations of the same layer can have different effective intensities.
How the distinction appears in common AI workloads
Training
Training repeatedly reads input batches and parameters, computes forward activations, computes gradients and writes updated state. The backward pass can add substantial intermediate movement. Distributed training also exchanges gradients or other state between devices. A training step may therefore contain compute-heavy matrix operations alongside communication- or memory-bound data preparation and synchronization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInference
Inference has a different balance depending on serving mode. A large batch can reuse weights and keep matrix units busy, while single-request or low-batch serving may spend more time fetching weights and waiting on memory. Autoregressive generation repeatedly reads model state for each new token, so cache placement, state movement and synchronization can matter as much as the arithmetic for one token.
Input pipelines
Decoding, augmentation, tokenization and host-to-device copies can limit throughput before the model kernel starts. In that situation, optimizing the neural-network arithmetic will not fix the end-to-end delay; the input pipeline must deliver ready data at the required rate.
Why peak specifications do not predict application speed
Peak operations per second describe a processor’s upper arithmetic capability under favorable conditions. They do not establish achieved performance for a particular model. A comparison should attach its claim to the workload, tensor shapes, precision, batch or sequence length, software implementation and measurement boundary.

When comparing systems, ask three questions:
- What resource limits the run? Is it arithmetic throughput, memory bandwidth, transfer bandwidth or latency?
- Where are the bytes moving? Within an accelerator, between host and accelerator, between accelerators or between storage and memory?
- What exactly was measured? A kernel, a model step, a token, a batch or the complete input-to-output path?
A result that measures only a compute kernel can omit input staging, synchronization and storage transfers. A result that measures end-to-end latency may include software and I/O costs that are not part of the model kernel. Both can be valid, but they answer different questions.
Ways engineers reduce data-movement cost
Increase locality and reuse
Tile or block tensors so frequently reused values stay in a fast memory level. Choose layouts that let the processor read contiguous data and avoid unnecessary conversions. Keep related operations close enough that their intermediate values can be reused without a full write-and-read cycle.
Fuse operations
Kernel fusion combines successive operations, such as an arithmetic transformation followed by an activation, so an intermediate does not have to travel to slower memory and back. Fusion can reduce bytes moved, but it may increase register or on-chip-memory pressure; the measured result depends on the workload.
Match precision to the requirement
Lower-precision representations can reduce the number of bytes transferred and may enable faster arithmetic paths. They must be evaluated against accuracy, range and stability requirements. A smaller representation is not automatically faster if conversion, poor alignment or an unsupported operation adds overhead.
Batch and schedule work carefully
Larger batches can improve reuse and amortize transfer overhead, but they may increase latency or exceed memory capacity. Overlapping data transfer with computation can keep an accelerator busy when the transfers and kernels are independent. The overlap must be measured; synchronization points or a saturated link can remove the benefit.

If profiling shows a memory ceiling, prioritize layout, reuse, fusion, bandwidth and transfer paths. If it shows a compute ceiling, consider better arithmetic kernels, reduced operation count or hardware with greater sustained throughput. If latency dominates, reduce round trips, queue depth and unnecessary synchronization rather than merely increasing bandwidth.
Best Value
A practical diagnosis workflow
- Define the boundary. Decide whether you are measuring a kernel, one model step, one request or end-to-end service time.
- Record workload conditions. Capture model version, tensor dimensions, precision, batch or sequence length, device count and software stack.
- Measure both sides. Collect arithmetic utilization, memory-bandwidth use, transfer rates and synchronization or wait time with an appropriate profiler.
- Check for staging delays. Determine whether data is waiting in storage, host memory or an interconnect before the accelerator can process it.
- Change one factor. Test a layout, tile size, batch, precision or fusion change while keeping other conditions fixed.
- Recheck correctness and the same boundary. A faster kernel is not an improvement if accuracy changes or end-to-end time stays unchanged.
These steps prevent a common mistake: optimizing the visible arithmetic kernel while the real delay is an upstream copy, a peer transfer or a synchronization.
Common misconceptions
“More compute always makes AI faster.”
Only compute-bound work benefits directly from additional arithmetic throughput. A memory-bound routine can run at the same speed on a processor with more arithmetic capacity if its data path is unchanged.
“The whole model is memory-bound or compute-bound.”
The classification normally applies to a measured operation or phase under stated conditions. Different layers, input sizes and serving modes can have different limits within one model.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Data movement means only storage I/O.”
Storage is one part of the picture. Cache fills, memory reads and writes, host-device copies and accelerator-to-accelerator communication are also data movement.
“A high bandwidth number proves good performance.”
Bandwidth is useful only in relation to the bytes the workload must move and how effectively the implementation reuses them. Latency, access pattern, contention and synchronization can still dominate.
The key takeaway
Model compute answers “how much arithmetic must be done?” Data movement answers “how quickly can the required values reach the arithmetic units and how quickly can results be stored or shared?” AI performance is governed by the limiting resource in that particular implementation: arithmetic throughput, memory or transfer bandwidth, or latency. Arithmetic intensity helps explain the balance, while workload-specific profiling determines which optimization is worth pursuing.
