Scientists have strong evidence that cosmic expansion changed from slowing to speeding up, but they have not identified dark energy as a particle, a field, or a directly measurable substance. The leading explanations are a cosmological constant (often described as vacuum energy), a changing field such as quintessence, or a modification of gravity on the largest scales.
NASA estimates that dark energy accounts for approximately 68.3% to 70% of the universe’s total energy budget in the cosmological models used today. That percentage is an inference from observations, not a direct inventory of something seen in a laboratory. As NASA’s plain-language summary puts it: “The short answer is: We don’t know.”

What exactly is dark energy?
In everyday language, “dark energy” sounds like an invisible material filling space. In cosmology, it is more precise to treat the term as a label for an unexplained effect: the expansion of the universe is accelerating, and something in our model of the cosmos must account for that behavior.
Galaxies are not simply flying outward from a central explosion. Space itself is expanding, so on sufficiently large scales the distances between unbound galaxies increase. Gravity from matter tends to slow that expansion. Measurements show that, after an earlier period in which gravity was dominant, the expansion began speeding up roughly several billion years ago. Dark energy is the placeholder name for the cause associated with that acceleration.

Nothing in the evidence requires dark energy to be a conventional substance. It could be a constant property of empty space, a field whose value changes with time, or a sign that general relativity needs modification over cosmological distances. The observations establish the acceleration much more securely than they establish its physical cause.
Why scientists think the expansion is accelerating
The original clue: distant Type Ia supernovae
In the late 1990s, two independent teams used Type Ia supernovae to measure how the expansion rate changed over cosmic time. These explosions have a useful relationship between their intrinsic brightness and their observed light curves. After correcting for effects such as light-curve width and color, astronomers can estimate how bright a supernova should be and compare that value with how bright it appears from Earth.
If the universe’s expansion had been steadily slowing under gravity, very distant supernovae would have appeared at distances predicted by a decelerating model. Instead, the supernovae looked fainter than expected. The simplest interpretation was that they were farther away than a slowing-expansion model allowed: the universe had expanded more while their light was traveling to us. The result indicated accelerated expansion.

The supernova conclusion was not based on one unusually bright or faint event. It emerged from a population of objects spanning different redshifts and from analyses that accounted for known sources of variation. Calibration, interstellar dust, host-galaxy properties and possible changes in supernova populations remain important uncertainties, so modern studies continue to test the result with larger samples and independent methods.
Independent observations strengthen the case
Today, cosmologists combine several probes. Each measures a different aspect of cosmic history, and each has its own calibration and systematic uncertainties. Agreement among them is more persuasive than any single measurement.
| Probe | What it measures | How it constrains dark energy | Main cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type Ia supernovae | Relative luminosity distance across redshift | Maps how the distance–redshift relation changes over time | Light-curve calibration, dust, host-galaxy correlations and possible population evolution |
| Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) | A characteristic scale imprinted in galaxy clustering | Acts as a calibrated standard ruler for distances and expansion rates | Galaxy selection, reconstruction methods and the assumed early-universe calibration |
| Cosmic microwave background (CMB) | Early-universe geometry and matter content | Provides an anchor that can be combined with lower-redshift measurements | It is not a direct image or measurement of dark energy itself; conclusions depend on the model connecting early and late times |
| Weak gravitational lensing and structure growth | How matter clumps and bends light over time | Tests the joint effects of expansion history and gravity | Galaxy-shape measurements, photometric redshifts, intrinsic alignments and astrophysical modeling |
How the main evidence works
Supernovae as distance indicators
A supernova analysis compares standardized brightness with redshift. Redshift tells astronomers how much the universe expanded while the light was in transit; the standardized brightness provides a distance estimate. Plotting many supernovae together reveals whether the expansion history follows a constantly slowing, constantly speeding or changing pattern.
The method is powerful because it samples a broad range of cosmic time. It is not perfect: dust can dim light, host galaxies can correlate with supernova properties, and the correction used to standardize explosions could evolve with redshift. Researchers therefore test alternative calibrations and compare supernova results with probes that do not rely on the same astrophysical assumptions.

BAO as a standard ruler
Before galaxies formed, ordinary matter and radiation behaved like a hot, coupled fluid. Sound waves moved through that plasma. The distance those waves traveled before the universe became transparent left a preferred separation scale in the later distribution of galaxies. This feature is called the baryon acoustic oscillation scale.
Because the physical scale can be calibrated using early-universe information, its apparent size at different redshifts measures cosmic distances. BAO analyses can constrain both the expansion rate along the line of sight and distances across the sky. They complement supernovae, which primarily provide relative distances without the same absolute ruler.
The CMB as an early-universe anchor
The CMB is the faint microwave glow released when the young universe first became transparent. Its pattern of temperature and polarization fluctuations contains information about spatial geometry, matter density and the initial conditions for structure formation.
Dark energy had little influence when the CMB was emitted, so the CMB does not photograph or directly weigh dark energy. Instead, it supplies tightly constrained early-universe parameters. When those parameters are evolved forward under a model such as ΛCDM and compared with supernovae, BAO or lensing at lower redshift, the combined data constrain the late-time expansion.
Weak lensing and the growth of structure
Massive structures slightly distort the apparent shapes of more distant galaxies. This weak gravitational lensing signal, measured statistically over millions of galaxies, traces how matter has clumped. The growth rate depends on how quickly space expands and on the law of gravity governing the growth of perturbations.
That dual sensitivity makes lensing valuable for distinguishing a new energy component from modified gravity. It also makes the analysis demanding. Accurate galaxy shapes, reliable redshift estimates, corrections for intrinsic galaxy alignments and realistic models of baryonic physics are all necessary.
What could dark energy possibly be?
1. A cosmological constant or vacuum energy
The simplest explanation adds a constant term to Einstein’s equations. In this model, empty space has a uniform energy density that does not dilute as the universe expands. A component with sufficiently negative pressure can drive accelerated expansion. This constant is usually represented by the Greek letter lambda, so the standard model is called ΛCDM: lambda plus cold dark matter.

ΛCDM fits a wide range of observations with relatively few parameters. Its success makes a cosmological constant the leading baseline explanation, not because the underlying physics is understood, but because the model is economical and empirically effective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe major theoretical difficulty is the cosmological-constant problem. Straightforward estimates from quantum physics produce a vacuum-energy density enormously larger than the value inferred from cosmology. NASA describes the mismatch as a factor of 10120. That number is a comparison between a theoretical estimate and an observed cosmological scale; it is not a measurement uncertainty and does not mean that observations are uncertain by 120 orders of magnitude.
2. A changing field such as quintessence
Quintessence is a broad class of models in which a field fills space and evolves over time or varies across space. Its energy density and pressure can change, producing an expansion history that differs subtly from a strict cosmological constant.
A dynamic field could leave signatures in both the distance–redshift relation and the growth of cosmic structure. Detecting those signatures would require consistent departures from the constant-energy prediction across multiple redshift ranges and probes. No quintessence field has been directly detected. It remains a candidate framework whose parameters are constrained by observations.
3. Modified gravity
Another possibility is that cosmic acceleration does not come from a new energy component at all. General relativity might need modification on the largest scales or at very low accelerations. In such theories, the altered gravitational law can make the expansion accelerate while also changing how structures grow.
Modified-gravity models must satisfy demanding tests. They need to reproduce the observed expansion history, explain the distribution of galaxies and lensing signals, and remain consistent with precise measurements within the solar system and other environments where general relativity has been tested. The evidence does not currently select modified gravity as the answer, but it remains a live alternative.
4. Other proposals
NASA lists cosmic defects among additional possibilities. Such ideas are less commonly used as the default explanation than a cosmological constant, dynamic fields or modified gravity. They illustrate an important point: “dark energy” is not the name of one confirmed theory.

Is dark energy changing over time?
That question is still open. A constant cosmological constant predicts a fixed equation-of-state parameter, usually written w = −1. Dynamic models allow w to vary with time. Cosmologists often fit a parameterization called w0waCDM, in which the present-day value and its evolution are estimated from the data.
The Particle Data Group’s 2025 review reports that a comparison using a three-year dataset from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, combined with CMB data, showed a 3.1-sigma preference for the evolving w0waCDM model over ΛCDM under the assumptions of that analysis. The survey dataset described in the review includes more than 30 million galaxies and quasars and about 0.8 million Lyman-alpha forest spectra.
A 3.1-sigma preference is statistically notable, but it is not a discovery of changing dark energy. The significance changes when different supernova compilations are added, and the result depends on the model, calibration choices, statistical treatment and data combination. The same Particle Data Group review notes that current CMB, BAO and supernova datasets can each be fit well by ΛCDM while preferring somewhat different parameter values.
The careful conclusion is therefore conditional: some combinations of current observations fit an evolving model better than a constant one, while other combinations reduce the preference. Independent data releases, improved control of systematics and tests of alternative parameterizations are needed before scientists can decide whether the apparent difference is new physics or a fluctuation, calibration issue or modeling effect.

The names are similar because both involve phenomena that are not directly visible, but they refer to different inferences.
- Dark matter behaves gravitationally like matter. It helps galaxies and clusters form, bends light through gravitational lensing and contributes to structure growth. It does not emit or absorb light in the ordinary way.
- Dark energy is the label for the cause associated with accelerated expansion. Its effective pressure and large-scale behavior differ from those of matter.
Dark matter pulls structures together through gravity; dark energy is associated with the acceleration of the cosmic expansion. Current evidence does not indicate that they are the same substance.

Why the cosmological constant is such a difficult puzzle
Observationally, a small positive cosmological constant works remarkably well. The theoretical problem is explaining why its value is so small but not exactly zero. Quantum fields are expected to contribute vacuum energy, yet adding those contributions naively gives a result vastly larger than the density inferred from cosmic expansion.
Best Value
This mismatch is one of the deepest unsolved problems connecting cosmology and fundamental physics. It is separate from the observational question of whether w is exactly −1. Even if every future survey finds a perfectly constant equation of state, physicists would still need to explain why the constant has its observed magnitude.
How scientists decide whether an apparent disagreement is real
When two analyses favor different values or models, the comparison must go beyond the headline number. Researchers examine:
- Probe: Are the results based on supernovae, BAO, the CMB, lensing or a combination?
- Redshift range: Do the datasets cover the same periods in cosmic history?
- Calibration: How were brightnesses, distances, galaxy redshifts or shape measurements calibrated?
- Systematics: Could dust, host-galaxy effects, selection bias, intrinsic alignments or astrophysical modeling shift the result?
- Model assumptions: Was the analysis restricted to ΛCDM, or did it allow curvature, neutrino-mass freedom or an evolving equation of state?
- Combination choices: Which surveys were combined, and how were correlated uncertainties handled?
A model that improves a fit after adding parameters is not automatically a better explanation. Additional freedom can absorb noise or unrecognized systematics. A convincing claim of evolving dark energy would require a coherent signal that survives reasonable analysis choices and appears across independent datasets.

- The universe’s late-time expansion is accelerating within the standard interpretation of the observations.
- Type Ia supernovae first provided the decisive late-1990s evidence.
- BAO, CMB constraints, lensing and structure-growth measurements now provide complementary tests.
- A model containing a cosmological constant and cold dark matter describes a broad range of data effectively.

- Whether dark energy is a literal substance, a field, a property of vacuum or a modification of gravity.
- Whether its density is exactly constant through time.
- Whether recent preferences for evolving models reflect new physics or unresolved systematics and statistical variation.
- Why the observed cosmological constant is so small compared with naive quantum-field estimates.
What future evidence would change the picture?
A decisive advance would not necessarily come from one spectacular measurement. It would come from several independent observations agreeing on a pattern that the simplest constant model cannot reproduce.
- Distance and expansion measurements across a wider redshift range could reveal a reproducible change in the equation of state.
- Growth-of-structure and weak-lensing data could test whether the same model predicts both expansion and the way matter clumps.
- Improved supernova calibration could reduce uncertainty from dust, host galaxies and population evolution.
- Larger BAO maps could sharpen the standard-ruler measurement and test whether discrepancies persist between surveys.
- Joint analyses could determine whether an apparent anomaly follows one instrument or method, or appears across unrelated techniques.
If a dynamic field is responsible, its effects might emerge as a consistent redshift-dependent departure from w = −1. If gravity is modified, expansion and structure growth may fail to obey the relationship predicted by general relativity with a cosmological constant. If all such tests continue to agree with ΛCDM, the observational case for a constant component will strengthen even though its microscopic explanation may remain unknown.
The bottom line for a non-specialist
Dark energy is not a known particle and not a force that has been collected or photographed. It is the name scientists give to the unknown cause associated with the universe’s accelerating expansion. The acceleration is supported by multiple classes of observation, beginning with distant Type Ia supernovae and now including BAO, the CMB, gravitational lensing and the growth of cosmic structure.
The simplest working explanation is a cosmological constant, but its predicted quantum-vacuum value is radically larger than the value inferred from cosmology. Dynamic fields and modified gravity remain plausible alternatives. Recent data have produced intriguing, model-dependent hints that dark energy might evolve, including a 3.1-sigma preference in one DESI-plus-CMB comparison reported by the 2025 Particle Data Group review. That result is not a settled detection. The central scientific question remains whether the acceleration comes from a constant component, a changing field or a change in gravity itself.
