The 32-character hexadecimal string is indexed as the MD5 checksum for jre-8u261-windows-i586.exe, the 32-bit Java Runtime Environment 8 Update 261 installer, with Oracle listed as the publisher. That is only an identification lead. A file on your computer can be renamed, replaced, or repackaged, so the filename and an online checksum listing cannot prove that your copy is genuine or safe.
Do not open it until you check its location, source, digital signature, SHA-256 hash, and Microsoft Defender result. The procedure below explains how to investigate it, when deletion is appropriate, and how to handle Windows errors that mention the file.

Why this filename looks unusual
Most Windows programs use a descriptive product name, but this file begins with a 32-character hexadecimal value: d502ea66a2e5fa06622af45f5ed12553. That format resembles an MD5 digest, a fixed-length value historically used to identify a file. Listings from FileHorse and Downzen associate this exact value with jre-8u261-windows-i586.exe, a 32-bit Java Runtime Environment 8 Update 261 installer. Those listings name Oracle as the author or publisher and describe a PE32 Windows executable.

An MD5 match can explain why a search for the random-looking name leads to Java, but it is not an authenticity certificate. Someone can rename any executable to the same string, distribute a modified installer, or place a file with that name in a different location. Treat the listing as a clue to investigate, not as permission to run the file.

Is d502ea66a2e5fa06622af45f5ed12553.exe safe?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer from the filename alone. A genuine Java installer downloaded from a trustworthy publisher location is a different risk from an executable with the same name found in a temporary folder, an email attachment, or an unexpected startup directory. Windows SmartScreen also evaluates publisher signing, download history, download volume, and antivirus results; an uncommon-download warning is a reputation signal, not a final malware verdict. Microsoft’s wording is: “No – the App Reputation warning is not an indication that the download is malicious.” You should still verify the publisher and origin before running it.
Evidence that supports a legitimate installer
- You can explain where the file came from, such as a Java installation you intentionally started.
- The full path is consistent with a downloaded installer or software archive, rather than an unexpected system or startup location.
- The Properties dialog shows an expected publisher under Digital Signatures, and the signature validates.
- The local SHA-256 matches the value published for the same release by a trusted publisher source.
- Microsoft Defender reports no threat after its security intelligence is updated and the file is scanned.
- An installed Java application or workflow actually requires that release.
Warning signs that require stopping
- The source is unknown, the download arrived unexpectedly, or the file was copied from a suspicious website or message.
- The file is in
Temp, an unfamiliarAppDatasubfolder, or an unexpected startup location without a clear Java-related reason. - There is no signature, the signer is not the expected publisher, or Windows reports that the signature is invalid.
- The SHA-256 differs from the trusted release value.
- Defender or another security product detects malware or potentially unwanted software.
- A program is trying to launch the file repeatedly even though you did not install Java.
Check the file without opening it
Perform these checks while leaving the executable closed. Write down the exact error or detection name, the complete path, where you obtained the file, and the time you first noticed it. Those details help distinguish an abandoned installer from a file being invoked by another program.
1. Inspect the path and basic properties
- Open File Explorer and locate the file. If an error message identifies a path, use that exact path rather than searching only by filename.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the Location, Size, Created date, and Modified date.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab. Select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. An absent or unexpected signer is a reason not to run the file. A valid signature helps establish origin but is not, by itself, a complete safety guarantee.
2. Calculate a SHA-256 hash
MD5 is useful for recognizing the historical Java listing, but use SHA-256 when authenticating the copy you possess. In PowerShell, run the following command with the actual path in quotes:

Copy the resulting 64-character SHA-256 value and compare it with the value published for the identical Java release by a trusted publisher source. Do not compare a 32-character MD5 value with a SHA-256 value; they are different algorithms and different lengths. If no authoritative SHA-256 value is available, record your result and rely on the publisher, signature, source, and security scans together rather than treating the MD5 association as proof.
3. Update Defender and scan the file
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection, then select Protection updates and choose Check for updates so the security intelligence is current.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Custom scan, and scan the folder containing the executable. If Defender detects anything, allow it to quarantine the item; do not create a broad exclusion simply to make the program run.
- If the result is concerning, or if you suspect other files were involved, run a Full scan. A full scan examines the system more broadly and can take substantially longer than a targeted scan.
Do not double-click the file while a scan is pending. A clean result lowers the risk but cannot establish that a renamed or repackaged file is the official Java installer, so retain the source, signature, and hash checks.
4. Use Defender Offline when a threat persists
If Defender continues to detect the file, cannot remove it while Windows is running, or you suspect persistence, use Microsoft Defender Offline from the Windows Security scan options. Save your work first: the computer restarts into a separate scanning environment. Follow the remediation choice Windows presents, then review the protection history after Windows starts again. Keep detected items quarantined unless you have independently established that the detection is a false positive.

How to decide whether the file is really a Java installer
Use several independent signals instead of one label. The following comparison keeps the plausible Java explanation separate from a renamed or malicious copy.
| Check | Consistent with an intentional Java installer | Consistent with a suspicious copy |
|---|---|---|
| Filename | The name may be a hash-like rename of jre-8u261-windows-i586.exe. |
Any executable can be renamed to the same 32-character string. |
| Path | A location you selected for a Java download or software archive. | Unexpected Temp, AppData, or startup location with no Java context. |
| Publisher signature | Valid signature from the expected publisher. | Missing, invalid, or unexpected signer. |
| SHA-256 | Matches the trusted value for the exact release and architecture. | Does not match, or no trustworthy reference exists. |
| Security scan | Updated Defender reports no threat. | Defender detects malware or unwanted software, or the file reappears after removal. |
| Installed software | A Java-dependent application or planned Java installation explains it. | No Java use, no installation activity, and no reason for the file to exist. |
Fix errors that mention d502ea66a2e5fa06622af45f5ed12553.exe
The exact Windows message and local path determine the repair. A filename-only alert can mean a damaged installer, a missing file reference, a blocked download, or a security detection. Do not force the executable to run by turning off SmartScreen, Defender, or other protection.
When the file belongs to a Java installation
- Finish the safety checks above and record any Defender detection before changing the installation.
- Open Windows Settings and go to Apps. Depending on your Windows version, choose Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the Java entry associated with the failed or obsolete installation and use its uninstall option. If several Java versions are listed, remove only the entry you have identified as damaged or no longer required.
- Restart Windows. A restart clears pending installer activity and ensures the next installation begins from a clean session.
- Obtain a fresh installer for the required Java release and 32-bit architecture from a trusted publisher source. Do not reuse the questionable copy merely because its filename appears in a search result.
- Before launching the replacement, inspect its digital signature, calculate its SHA-256, update Defender, and run a targeted scan. Proceed only when the source and results are satisfactory.
If the new installer produces the same error, preserve the exact message, path, signature details, hash output, and Defender history. Those records are more useful than repeatedly downloading files with different names.

When the file is in Downloads, Temp, or AppData without a Java reason
- Do not open it or move it to a trusted folder to bypass a warning.
- Scan the file with updated Defender and note the detection name, if any.
- If Defender detects malware or unwanted software, quarantine it and follow the remediation instructions. Run a Full scan and use Defender Offline if the detection persists or returns.
- If scans are clean but the origin remains unexplained, keep the file isolated while you check installed applications and recent downloads. A clean scan is not proof that the file is an official Java installer.
- After you have preserved the evidence and confirmed that no legitimate installation needs it, remove the file through File Explorer or the security product’s quarantine workflow. Emptying a folder should not be the first response when you still need the path, source, and detection information.
When Windows says the file cannot be found
A missing-file message often means an application, shortcut, scheduled action, or incomplete installer still points to an old path. First record the path shown in the message and check whether a Java entry remains under Windows Apps. If Java is no longer needed, uninstall the stale entry and restart. If Java is needed, repair the installation by removing the broken entry and installing a verified replacement. Do not download a random executable solely to satisfy a path reference.
When Windows blocks the file
Blocking can result from SmartScreen reputation, an invalid signature, a Defender detection, or a file obtained from an untrusted source. Confirm the publisher, origin, hash, and scan result instead of disabling protection. If the evidence cannot establish legitimacy, leave the file blocked and quarantine or remove it according to Defender’s result.
Can you delete d502ea66a2e5fa06622af45f5ed12553.exe?
Deletion is reasonable only after you know what the file is and whether anything still needs it. A downloaded installer is normally separate from an installed program, but the filename alone does not establish that this copy is merely a leftover. Use this decision sequence:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Identify the path and source. An unexplained executable deserves investigation before deletion or execution.
- Scan first. Quarantine a detected threat rather than opening it or adding an exclusion.
- Check installed Java software. If a Java installation is broken, repair or remove the installation first and then obtain a verified installer if required.
- Preserve evidence when suspicious. Record the path, hash, signature, source, and Defender detection before removing the file.
- Remove only when no legitimate dependency remains. If the file is an unneeded, verified installer or a confirmed unwanted item, delete it using File Explorer or the security product’s recommended remediation.
If the file reappears after removal, investigate the process or installation that recreates it and run a Full scan followed by Defender Offline when appropriate. Repeatedly deleting the visible file without addressing its source may leave the underlying problem unresolved.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the MD5 listing authenticates every file with that name.
- Treating a SmartScreen warning as automatic proof of malware, or as proof of safety when the warning is dismissed.
- Running an unsigned or unexpectedly located executable to see whether it works.
- Comparing the local hash with a value for a different Java update, architecture, or installer file.
- Disabling Defender or creating a broad exclusion to bypass a block.
- Deleting the file before recording the path and detection details needed to diagnose a recurring error.
- Reinstalling Java from an untrusted mirror when the original source cannot be verified.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
Outbyte PC Repair can be an optional shortcut for some non-driver Windows problems, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL issues, settings that contribute to CPU, RAM, or disk load, temporary and cache cleanup, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription; it complements antivirus protection and does not replace it, and results vary.
