What is the story of Cyberpunk 2077?
V begins as a mercenary taking jobs and gigs in the hope of becoming one of Night City’s recognized operators. The turning point is a high-risk theft at Konpeki Plaza. The target is a one-of-a-kind implant associated with the promise of immortality, not an ordinary piece of hardware that can simply be sold and forgotten.

- V builds a reputation. Before the main crisis, V’s life is organized around paid work, contacts and the ambition to rise in Night City’s dangerous professional underworld.
- The Konpeki Plaza job changes the stakes. The planned theft goes wrong, leaving the experimental prototype in V’s head instead of safely in someone else’s hands.
- Johnny Silverhand appears inside V’s consciousness. The implant carries Johnny’s personality. His presence is not a normal companion who can be dismissed; it intrudes on V’s thoughts and threatens V’s sense of self.
- Survival becomes an identity problem. V must look for a way to remain alive while confronting the possibility that the technology is replacing parts of their personality with Johnny’s.
- Choices shape the consequences. The people V trusts, the jobs they accept and the methods they use all affect the direction of the story and the relationships surrounding them.
The premise gives the game two connected kinds of urgency. V has an immediate physical problem caused by the implant, but also a philosophical problem: if the personality in their head keeps taking over, what makes V remain V? Johnny’s history, opinions and hostility toward corporate power make that question personal rather than abstract.

Why the setting matters
Night City is not merely scenery between missions. Its social structure explains why the story keeps returning to corporations, money, technological power and altered bodies. The city’s official description emphasizes a culture obsessed with power, glamour and body modification, so people’s identities are often tied to what they own, who controls them and how much of their bodies they are willing to replace.

The contrast between districts also gives V’s choices context. A corporate tower, a neighborhood job and a journey into the outskirts do not represent the same version of Night City. These six characters provide the clearest entry points into the game’s plot and themes. They are not the entire cast, but each shows a different way of living with Night City’s pressures.

V: the player’s point of view
V is deliberately flexible. Rather than prescribing one fixed personality, the game gives you room to decide what kind of mercenary V becomes and what values guide their decisions. That flexibility is important because the implant crisis is about ownership of the self. The character you shape through choices is placed under pressure by a personality you did not create.

Johnny Silverhand: a second will in V’s head
Johnny is a rebellious rockerboy, the frontman of the band SAMURAI and an outspoken opponent of corporations. His personality turns the implant from a medical or technical problem into an argument between two people forced to share one consciousness. Johnny’s presence also connects V’s immediate predicament to older conflicts involving corporate power and his own past.
Jackie Welles: friendship before status
Jackie is V’s loyal friend, a Heywood native who wants to make it into Night City’s big leagues. His role gives the early story a personal anchor. Ambition in Night City is not only about money or fame; it can test friendships and expose the difference between a dream of success and the risks required to pursue it.
Judy Álvarez: technology and injustice
Judy is a braindance technician known for her artistry and her fierce opposition to injustice. Through her, the game treats advanced media and body-related technology as human issues rather than simple gadgets. Her perspective emphasizes the people affected when powerful systems turn intimate experiences into products or tools of control.

Panam is a mercenary connected to the Aldecaldos, a close-knit roaming family known as Nomads. Her connection broadens the story beyond Night City’s corporate skyline. She represents a form of belonging built around mobility and mutual support, giving V a different model of community from the city’s transactional job market.

Adam Smasher: the weaponized body
Adam Smasher is a heavily cybernetic, full-body-conversion enforcer working for Arasaka. His connection to Johnny’s past makes him more than a powerful obstacle. - Skills and perks: You choose how V develops, allowing the character to specialize rather than remain identical to every other playthrough.
- Upgradeable weapons: Weapons can be improved as V takes on more dangerous work.
- Hacking: Technical abilities give V options beyond direct shooting.
- Body-enhancing implants: Cybernetic upgrades connect the mechanical systems to the story’s larger questions about changing the human body.
- Multiple approaches: Missions can support guns-blazing combat, ranged attacks or stealth, depending on the build and the decision you make in the moment.
This flexibility is best understood as a role-playing framework, not a promise that every single decision produces a wholly separate storyline. Choices can shape the story and the people around V, but the exact scope of an outcome depends on the decision, the mission and the relationships involved.
A practical way to choose your approach
- Pick the style you will actually enjoy. If you prefer direct action, invest in the tools that support aggressive combat. If you like distance, build around ranged attacks. If you would rather avoid open fights, favor hacking and stealth options.
- Use jobs to test the build. Gigs and story missions provide different situations, so treat them as opportunities to learn how your chosen skills and equipment interact.
- Pay attention to people, not only objectives. Conversations and decisions affect relationships as well as mission outcomes, which is central to the game’s role-playing design.
- Accept that trade-offs are part of the experience. A choice that helps V in one immediate situation may alter trust, access or a later relationship. The game is built around consequences rather than a single universally correct route.
Where Phantom Liberty fits
Phantom Liberty is an expansion with a spy-thriller premise, not a replacement for the base game’s opening story. In CD PROJEKT RED’s 2023 announcement, V undertakes a high-stakes espionage mission to save the President of the New United States with the help of agent Solomon Reed.

The expansion takes place in Dogtown, described as a dangerous district ruled by Kurt Hansen. That setting changes the immediate flavor of the adventure: instead of introducing V through the original mercenary-and-implant setup, it places the character in a concentrated intelligence operation with political stakes. You can therefore think of the base game as the foundation for V’s identity crisis and Phantom Liberty as an additional spy-focused chapter set within the same world.
The 2023 announcement establishes the expansion’s premise and setting. It does not, by itself, establish current pricing, platform listings or store availability, all of which can change.
What makes the story distinct
Identity is both a mechanic and a theme
The implant is not just a plot device that explains why Johnny appears. It makes the game’s central theme visible in play. You are making choices for V while another personality comments on those choices and presses against the boundary between memory, personality and bodily ownership.

Cybernetic implants, hacking and braindance technology are part of everyday life in Night City, but the game repeatedly ties them to power. The important question is not only what technology can do. It is who controls it, who profits from it and who bears the risk when a person’s body becomes a platform for someone else’s agenda.

Relationships provide the human scale
V’s relationships prevent the story from becoming a purely abstract battle over corporations and immortality. Jackie’s loyalty, Judy’s opposition to injustice, Panam’s community and Johnny’s antagonistic presence all give the larger conflicts a personal dimension. The game asks you to judge institutions through the people who live under them.
