configurator.exe is not a unique Windows system program. It is a generic executable name used by unrelated products, including documented EPLAN and AVEVA/ArchestrA components. The file is trustworthy only when its complete path, digital signature, hash, and parent application match software you deliberately installed. A copy in Downloads, Temp, a user-profile folder, or another unexpected location should be treated as suspicious until scanned and identified.
What configurator.exe is
An .exe file is a Windows program. The filename before the extension is chosen by the software publisher, so several unrelated vendors can use the same name. Windows does not reserve configurator.exe for one built-in utility, and there is no single Microsoft-approved copy that belongs on every PC.

That is why the name alone cannot answer “Is configurator.exe safe?” or tell you which repair applies. You need the file’s path, signer, version, hash, and the application that launched it. A legitimate file installed with an engineering or industrial-control package can have the same name as an unwanted download placed in a user folder.

Other third-party applications may also use the filename. A path that differs from the product you installed is not automatically malware, but it removes an important reason to trust the file and calls for further verification.

How to decide whether your copy is safe
Use several signals together. A familiar filename or an apparently clean scan is not enough, because a malicious program can copy a legitimate name.
1. Record the exact location and parent application
- In File Explorer, right-click
configurator.exe, select Properties, and note the Location shown on the General tab. - Open the Details tab and record the product name, file description, publisher, and file version. Missing or contradictory details are warning signs, not proof of infection.
- If the file is running, open Task Manager, right-click the process, and choose Open file location. This connects the process to the executable that is actually being used.
- Write down which program or installer launched it and the exact error text. A file inside a known vendor directory is easier to explain than an identical file that appeared after an unrelated download.
2. Check the digital signature
In the file’s Properties window, open Digital Signatures, select the signer, and choose Details. Windows should report that the signature is valid and show a publisher consistent with the product you installed. An unsigned file, an invalid signature, or a signer unrelated to the parent application requires caution. A valid signature is evidence about who signed that particular binary; it is not a guarantee that the program is suitable for your system or that every file with the same name is signed.
3. Scan the exact file
Right-click the file and choose the Microsoft Defender scan option available on your Windows edition. If the item is currently running, scan it from its actual path rather than scanning only a shortcut. Defender’s result should be considered alongside the path and signature.
You can submit the file or its hash to a multi-engine service such as VirusTotal for an additional reputation signal. Such services describe scanning and reputation data; they do not prove that two similarly named files are the same binary. Uploading a confidential business executable may disclose it to third parties, so follow your organization’s policy first.

Do not create a Defender exclusion merely to stop an alert or make a crash disappear. Microsoft warns that exclusions stop real-time checking for the excluded files, folders, file types, or processes and can increase exposure.
4. Understand Mark-of-the-Web warnings
Windows Attachment Manager adds a Mark-of-the-Web indicator when it believes a file came from another computer or an untrusted zone. You may see a security warning when opening the file or an Unblock checkbox in Properties. Verify the download source and scan the file before opening it. Microsoft advises unblocking only files from trusted sources; removing the warning does not make an unknown executable safe.
Why configurator.exe errors happen
The same message can have very different causes because the filename is reused. Match the symptom to the owning product instead of replacing the executable blindly.

Error codes, file sizes, required .NET versions, and repair commands vary by the owning product. There is no universal configurator.exe fix that can be safely applied to every installation.

Collect evidence before changing anything
Capturing context prevents a well-intended repair from destroying information needed to identify a suspicious file or explain a vendor bug.
- Copy the complete path, publisher, product version, and the time the error occurred into a note.
- Take a screenshot or copy the exact wording of the error. Include any module name, exception type, or application name.
- In Task Manager, check whether the process is running and use Open file location to confirm that the path matches the Properties window.
- Open Event Viewer and review Windows Logs > Application around the failure time. Look for the application name and faulting module, but do not assume the listed module is the root cause.
- Record the signature status and Defender result. For a repeatable file identity, calculate a SHA-256 hash in Windows PowerShell with:

Run these commands against the exact file that generated the error, not a similarly named copy.
Manual repair workflow
Step 1: Identify the owning application
Use the path, product details, and signer together. A path under EPLAN’s documented C:Program Fileseplancommon directory with an EPLAN signature should be handled as part of EPLAN. A file under AVEVA’s documented C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesArchestrA directory should be handled as part of the AVEVA/ArchestrA installation. If no installed product explains the file, stop before launching it and follow the isolation steps below.
Step 2: Repair from Windows’ installed-apps interface
- On Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Find the product that matches the signer and path. Select its menu, then choose Advanced options > Repair when that option is provided.
- If the product uses the classic installer, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the application, and choose Repair or Change if offered.
- Restart Windows and test the original operation. Keep the captured path and version so you can tell whether the repair restored the same component.
Not every desktop application exposes a Windows Repair button. When it does not, use the application’s own maintenance option or proceed to a clean reinstall from the publisher’s official distribution channel.

Step 3: Reinstall only from the matching publisher
Download the installer from the vendor or your organization’s licensed software portal, not from an EXE-collection site. Confirm that the product edition and version support your Windows installation. Close the application, preserve project data and configuration backups, uninstall only when the vendor’s instructions call for it, restart, and install the verified package. Recheck the new file’s path and signature after installation.

Do not copy configurator.exe from another computer. Even when the name and apparent version match, dependencies, registration, plugins, and signed files may differ.
Step 4: Use product logs and support
Look for a Logs or Diagnostics folder in the product’s documented installation or data directory, and use the application’s Help or Support entry to locate its log instructions. Include the exact exception, product version, Windows edition, path, signature status, and SHA-256 hash in a support request. For the ArchestrA example, the ArgumentException in CheckForNewPlugin.UpdatePlugins is meaningful diagnostic context; replacing the executable would discard that clue.
Step 5: Check permissions without weakening security
If the file is legitimate but fails only for a standard user, test the product’s documented permissions and service requirements. Avoid granting broad “Full control” permissions to the executable or its directory and avoid disabling Defender. A vendor-supported repair or an administrator-assisted installation is safer than permanently running an unknown program as administrator.

If no installed application explains the file, do not open it to see what it does. Disconnecting a work computer from sensitive networks may be appropriate under your organization’s incident-response policy; do not delete evidence before your security team has recorded it.
- Record the full path, creation and modification times, signer result, SHA-256 hash, and Defender result.
- In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, review detections and quarantine the file using the available action. Quarantine is preferable to manually deleting a file when you may need to restore or analyze it.
- After the file is contained, review Settings > Apps > Installed apps for a recently added program and check browser downloads or email attachments that preceded its appearance.
- Review Task Manager > Startup apps, Task Scheduler, and Windows services for entries that launch the same unexpected path. Remove an entry only when you know which installer created it; otherwise preserve the details for your security team.
- If the file reappears, produces new detections, or was executed with administrative rights, escalate to your security administrator rather than repeatedly deleting copies.
Can you delete configurator.exe?
Deleting it is safe only when you have established that it is an unwanted file or a leftover from software you have intentionally removed. Deleting a legitimate copy from an active EPLAN or AVEVA/ArchestrA installation can prevent the parent application from starting, break updates, or leave an incomplete installation.

Where to download configurator.exe safely
There is no universal official download for a standalone file with this name. The safe source is the installer for the specific product you identified, obtained from that publisher or an authorized organizational software portal. EPLAN and AVEVA/ArchestrA copies are components of their respective products, not interchangeable downloads.
A page offering a bare configurator.exe without naming the product, publisher, version, signature, and dependencies should be avoided. Even a file that launches successfully may be the wrong build or a malicious program using a familiar name. After downloading a legitimate installer, scan it, verify its publisher and signature, and let the installer place the executable in the expected directory.
Fixes for recurring crashes by product
EPLAN path or signer
If the path and signature identify EPLAN, update or repair EPLAN through its own maintenance process. Capture the EPLAN version, the exact crash text, and whether the failure occurs at launch or during a particular project operation. Do not substitute an AVEVA file or a copy from another EPLAN installation; the documented sample version and hash do not represent every release.
AVEVA/ArchestrA path or signer
If the file is under the documented ArchestrA directory, use the AVEVA Operations Control repair or reinstall procedure for your licensed version. The reported Configurator.Core.CheckForNewPlugin.UpdatePlugins exception indicates that plugin-update handling may be involved. Preserve the trace and contact AVEVA support if repair does not resolve it, rather than downloading a replacement executable.
No matching product
If neither the path nor the signer matches software you recognize, treat the event as an identification or security problem first. Scan and isolate the file, inspect startup and scheduled-task references, and ask your administrator or security team to analyze the hash. A generic “missing DLL” or “application could not start” message is not enough information to choose a safe replacement.
