conemuc64.exe is the 64-bit console-service component of ConEmu, a Windows console emulator. It is normally legitimate when it is inside your ConEmu installation and appears with the matching files ConEmuCD64.dll and ConEmuHk64.dll. The filename alone does not prove safety: an unexpected copy in a temporary folder, user profile, or unrelated program directory needs verification.
Most conemuc64.exe problems come from an incomplete or mixed-bitness ConEmu installation, a file blocked by Windows because it was downloaded, or a genuine crash in the console integration layer. The safest repair is to verify the path and package, check the file’s origin, restore the coordinated ConEmu files from an official package, and collect a diagnostic dump if the program still crashes.

ConEmu separates its user interface from a console-service process. The project documentation describes ConEmuC as the component that “implements full-featured console window and serves all console requests.” The 64-bit executable is that service for 64-bit console work.

The executable normally works as part of a set. The relevant 64-bit companions are:
ConEmuCD64.dllConEmuHk64.dll
On 64-bit Windows, the folder guide says both the 32-bit and 64-bit console-service sets are required for proper operation. A file copied out of that set, or a package containing only one bitness, can therefore fail even when the executable itself is genuine.
Why both 32-bit and 64-bit files can appear
ConEmu supports applications compiled for different processor architectures. Its FAQ explains that ConEmuC.exe and its companion files are needed for 32-bit applications, while ConEmuC64.exe and its companions are needed for 64-bit applications in the relevant ConEmu build. The exact process that appears depends on whether you installed the 32-bit or 64-bit ConEmu executable and on the application being launched.
That is why deleting the “other” executable is not a useful cleanup step. On a 64-bit edition of Windows, the documented package layout expects both service variants to be available.

Is conemuc64.exe safe?
A copy in a legitimate ConEmu directory with the expected companion DLLs is consistent with the documented installation. That is evidence of provenance, not a guarantee that every file with this name is harmless. Malware can use a familiar filename, and a damaged or repackaged download can behave differently from the original.
Check the file location first
- Open ConEmu and reproduce the alert or error if possible.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - On the Details tab, locate
ConEmuC64.exe, right-click it, and choose Open file location. - Confirm that the folder is the ConEmu installation folder you intentionally installed. A path under a temporary directory, an unexpected user-profile subfolder, or an unrelated application directory deserves additional investigation.
- In the same folder, look for
ConEmuCD64.dllandConEmuHk64.dll. On 64-bit Windows, also confirm that the matching 32-bit service files supplied by your package remain present.
If the process is not running, search for the filename in File Explorer and inspect every copy rather than assuming that the first result is the active one.
Verify where the download came from
ConEmu’s documentation recommends obtaining binaries from the project’s official distribution and warns that unofficial mirrors can provide altered or incomplete packages. Microsoft likewise advises downloading software from the official vendor and keeping real-time security protection current. If you cannot explain how a copy arrived on the PC, do not run it merely because its name looks familiar; quarantine or remove it after your security software has assessed it, then install a known-good package.

Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is available. A signature that validates to the expected publisher and has not expired or been revoked is useful evidence. The absence of a signature is not, by itself, proof of malware, so combine this check with the installation path, package source, and an antivirus scan. If the file is in an unexpected location and you cannot establish its origin, treat it as unverified.

Why Windows may block a legitimate file
ConEmu notes that downloaded binaries can carry a Windows Zone Identifier. This marker records that the file came from another computer or the internet and can cause SmartScreen warnings, extra User Account Control prompts, or antivirus false positives. The project’s list of affected files includes ConEmuC64.exe.
Do not bypass a warning automatically. First confirm that the package came from the official ConEmu source, inspect the file properties, and scan it with your up-to-date security product. If the warning is attributable to the download-zone marker rather than a malicious detection, open Properties, select Unblock if the checkbox is present, choose Apply, and try the operation again. If your security product identifies actual malware, leave the file blocked and follow that product’s removal instructions instead.
Common conemuc64.exe errors and what they indicate

How to fix conemuc64.exe errors manually
1. Record the exact message and architecture
Write down the complete error text, the program that was being launched, and whether you are running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. Note whether the failure is a missing-file message, a security block, an immediate crash, or a hang on exit. This distinction determines whether you need to restore files, clear a download marker, or collect a dump.

2. Inspect the installed package
- Open the ConEmu installation folder from the shortcut’s Properties dialog or from Task Manager’s Open file location command.
- Confirm that
ConEmuC64.exe,ConEmuCD64.dll, andConEmuHk64.dllare present together. - On 64-bit Windows, verify that the 32-bit service executable and its corresponding files supplied by the same package are also present.
- Check that the files have plausible, consistent timestamps and versions. A single file copied from a different release can be incompatible even when all names look correct.
If only one file is missing, resist the temptation to fetch that file alone. Proceed to a package repair so that the executable and libraries come from the same release.
3. Replace an unofficial or incomplete download
If the installation came from an unofficial mirror, an archive of unknown origin, or a copied folder, uninstall or remove that copy according to your normal software-maintenance practice. Download a fresh ConEmu package from the project’s official source, verify the download with your security software, and install it as a matching set. Microsoft’s general guidance is to use the official vendor download rather than a third-party repository.
When reinstalling, select the same architecture you actually use. Installing a 32-bit executable while retaining 64-bit libraries, or the reverse, can recreate the original launch failure.

4. Handle a blocked file
- Right-click the affected executable and choose Properties.
- Read the security warning and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Run an antivirus scan on the file and its containing folder.
- Only when the source is confirmed and the warning is consistent with the download-zone marker, select Unblock, click Apply, and retry ConEmu.
- If the warning names malware or the source cannot be confirmed, leave the file blocked and obtain a clean package instead.
Unblocking changes how Windows treats the downloaded file; it does not repair missing DLLs or make an unknown binary trustworthy.
5. Restore the complete 64-bit service set
The documented package layout makes ConEmuC64.exe, ConEmuCD64.dll, and ConEmuHk64.dll a related group. If the error says the file cannot be found, restore all three from the same installer or archive. Do not mix a newly downloaded executable with older libraries. On a 64-bit operating system, retain the corresponding 32-bit service files as well, because ConEmu may need them for 32-bit applications.
6. Test with a controlled launch
Close every ConEmu window, start the application again, and launch a simple console program before testing the application that originally failed. If the simple test works but one application still fails, the problem may involve that application’s console behavior rather than the presence of conemuc64.exe. Record whether the failure occurs only for 32-bit or only for 64-bit programs; that observation can identify a missing service variant.
7. Investigate crashes and hangs with a minidump
ConEmu’s abnormal-termination FAQ covers access violations, hangs during exit, and CreateFile(CONOUT$) failures. For these cases, reproduce the problem and create a minidump for the relevant ConEmu and console processes, following the project’s diagnostic guidance. Preserve the dump with the exact error text, Windows architecture, ConEmu build, and the command that triggered the failure.
A dump can show whether the fault occurred in ConEmu, the hosted console program, or another module. If you need a precise interpretation of an access violation, the project documentation directs users to contact the application developer with the diagnostic information. Replacing random DLLs before collecting the evidence can make the original fault harder to analyze.
8. Scan when the provenance remains uncertain
Microsoft recommends using an up-to-date real-time security product and running a full scan when malware is suspected. Run the scan against the suspicious file and then perform a full Windows Security scan if the location, signature, or behavior remains unexplained. Do not add an exclusion for conemuc64.exe simply to silence a warning. A legitimate ConEmu file can be restored from a verified package after the scan; an unverified copy should not be granted an exception.
When the error is not caused by conemuc64.exe
The executable may be the first component named in an error even when the underlying problem is elsewhere. A console application can terminate unexpectedly, a companion DLL can be missing, or Windows can block the entire downloaded package. Use the symptom to narrow the cause:
- Only one command fails: test another console application. If ConEmu remains stable, investigate the failing application and its console requirements.
- Every 64-bit command fails: inspect the 64-bit service files and package architecture first.
- Both 32-bit and 64-bit commands fail after an update: reinstall the complete package instead of replacing one executable.
- The file works after manually unblocking it: retain the source and scan records; do not assume every future download with the same name is safe.
- The process crashes on exit: capture the minidump and preserve the exact sequence, because a replacement file alone may not address an application interaction.
What not to do
- Do not delete
conemuc64.exemerely because it appears in Task Manager; it is a normal service component of ConEmu installations. - Do not download a lone EXE or DLL from an unverified “DLL fix” site.
- Do not mix files from different ConEmu releases or architectures.
- Do not click through a SmartScreen or antivirus warning before checking the source and scanning the file.
- Do not add a security exclusion just because ConEmu is inconvenient to reinstall.
- Do not conclude that every copy with this filename is safe without checking its path and provenance.

For persistent crashes or hangs, a minidump is more useful than repeatedly swapping individual files.
