What Is Compatibility Testing? A Guide for Web Applications

Compatibility testing means verifying that a web app’s essential features work for the browsers, devices, and assistive technologies its users rely on—not testing every possible combination.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility testing checks that a web application’s important features work for the browsers, devices, and assistive technologies its audience uses. It does not mean testing every possible browser-and-device combination or requiring every screen to look identical. Define a support range from your users and product commitments, test real user flows within it, and preserve access to core information and services outside the most thoroughly tested tier where practical.

What compatibility testing covers

MDN Web Docs defines cross-browser testing as ensuring that a website works across browsers and devices. Differences can arise from browser versions, desktop or mobile form factors, hardware capabilities, browsing preferences, and assistive technology. Web standards encourage interoperable behavior, but they do not guarantee identical rendering or behavior in every implementation.

Judge compatibility by user outcomes: can people navigate, understand information, and complete the application’s essential tasks? A mobile layout may appropriately differ from a desktop layout, and a less capable browser may receive a simpler presentation. Exact visual sameness is not the goal if core functionality remains accessible.

Include keyboard and screen-reader access in the practical scope. A page that renders without errors can still be incompatible for someone who cannot reach controls, perceive status changes, or complete a key workflow with their assistive technology.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose browsers and devices from your support promise

There is no universal browser matrix that is right for every application. Start with analytics, audience geography, and explicit support commitments. Site analytics, when available, can be more useful than broad regional browser statistics because they reflect your own users. If the application is new, make an initial matrix from the intended audience and product requirements, then revisit it as real usage emerges.

Agree on the range with the site owner, product team, or client before testing. MDN’s examples include Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and mobile platforms, but they are examples, not a universal current policy. Select the operating systems, browser versions, phones, tablets, and desktop environments that matter to your users and required features.

Use support tiers to make tradeoffs clear

  • Full support: Common, current browsers and devices for your target audience. Test the main workflows thoroughly.
  • Core support: Older or less capable configurations. Verify access to essential information and services, and provide fallbacks where a feature is unavailable.
  • Defensive fallback: Rare or unknown configurations. Avoid promising a bespoke experience without evidence, but use sensible fallback behavior to prevent avoidable loss of access.

Build a practical testing workflow

  1. Agree on scope before implementation. Record the supported browsers, operating systems, device classes, and important assistive-technology needs. Identify likely problem areas and check whether required APIs or browser features are supported.
  2. Break the application into user flows. List the actions people need to complete, such as navigating, searching, submitting a form, adding an item to a cart, or completing payment. Test each feature as it is implemented instead of leaving compatibility checks until release.
  3. Start with a small, useful baseline. Check a couple of stable desktop browsers, perform basic keyboard and screen-reader navigation, and test at least one mobile platform. Fix significant defects before expanding coverage.
  4. Expand to the agreed matrix. Test the specific browser, operating-system, and device combinations your audience relies on. Prefer physical devices when practical. Emulators and virtual machines can extend OS and device coverage when a physical lab is unavailable, but they do not reproduce every hardware or browser condition.
  5. Automate repeatable checks. Add automated tests as repeated manual coverage becomes expensive. Automate user actions and visible outcomes, and use screenshot comparisons where visual regressions matter.
  6. Keep human review in the loop. Automation cannot judge every usability issue or establish accessibility on its own. Pair it with human review, accessibility evaluation, and user feedback.

Use feature references without mistaking them for application tests

MDN Baseline summarizes web-platform feature availability across selected popular browsers, including Safari on iOS and macOS, Chrome on Android and desktop, Edge desktop, and Firefox on Android and desktop. It distinguishes widely available features from features that are newly available or have limited availability. Consult it when deciding whether an API, CSS feature, or JavaScript capability is appropriate for a supported configuration: MDN Baseline.

A feature-support summary cannot prove that your application works. It does not replace testing your flows, accessibility, usability, performance, or security, and it does not necessarily describe older releases, operating-system web views, or screen-reader behavior. Confirm behavior in the actual environments named by your support policy.

Automate cross-browser checks with Playwright

Playwright supports automated projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and can use branded Chrome and Edge channels. Its browser guide notes that each Playwright release uses specific browser binaries; keep Playwright current when you want coverage against recent browser releases. Bundled Chromium may run ahead of branded stable Chrome and Edge. Use branded channels when your regression requirements target publicly available browsers or when media-codec behavior matters. These browser versions and channel details can change, so consult the Playwright browser guide.

Write assertions around what users can see and do, rather than internal implementation details such as CSS class names or function names. The following minimal example runs the same visible navigation check in Playwright’s Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects after configuring those projects in your Playwright configuration:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('primary navigation opens the pricing page', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Pricing' }).click();
  await expect(page).toHaveURL(/pricing/);
  await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Pricing' })).toBeVisible();
});

Replace the example address and accessible names with those from your application. Make sure the configured Playwright projects match the browsers in your support matrix; a browser engine run is not automatically identical to every branded browser version or mobile device.

What automation can and cannot establish

  • Good candidates: Repeated user flows, control visibility, navigation outcomes, form feedback, and selected screenshot comparisons.
  • Still needs assessment: Whether a flow is understandable, whether a screen reader communicates it effectively, whether touch targets are usable on real hardware, and whether a visual difference is acceptable to users.

W3C’s WebDriver index lists both a 2018 Recommendation and a 2026 Working Draft. Both describe WebDriver as a platform- and language-neutral interface for scripts or programs to inspect and control browser behavior; be precise about which status you mean when discussing the standard: W3C WebDriver specifications.

Capture screenshots as one part of visual review

Screenshots can make layout regressions easier to spot across browsers and viewport sizes, but they show pixels, not whether a workflow is usable or accessible. Compare the same route, state, viewport, and relevant content conditions. Review differences rather than treating every pixel change as a defect: responsive reflow and platform-specific rendering may be appropriate.

For a manual screenshot, open the page in the browser and device configuration you need to inspect, set the target viewport, reproduce the relevant page state, and capture it using the browser’s screenshot facility. For repeatable checks, automate navigation and screenshot capture in the browser matrix, then review changes alongside functional assertions.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call API can return an image or PDF; it is useful for repeatable visual captures, not a replacement for testing user flows in the browsers and devices your support policy covers. For example, with an API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free screenshots.

Diagnose gaps in your coverage

When a defect appears, first identify whether it is a browser feature gap, an implementation difference, a device constraint, an accessibility barrier, or a test setup issue. Reproduce it in the affected configuration, record the exact browser and operating system, and tie the fix to the user flow that failed.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • A required API is missing: Check feature support for the oldest configuration in scope. Use a fallback or adjust the support tier rather than assuming every browser implements the same features.
  • The test passes in an engine but fails in branded Chrome or Edge: Confirm which browser binary or branded channel the test used. Playwright’s bundled Chromium can differ in version from stable branded browsers.
  • A screenshot differs but the task still works: Check whether the change is an acceptable responsive or platform-specific presentation before treating it as a compatibility defect.
  • Automation passes but users report access problems: Add keyboard, screen-reader, touch-device, and human usability checks; automated assertions cover only the outcomes they explicitly test.

Keep the matrix current without testing everything

Compatibility testing is an ongoing support practice, not a one-time release gate. Revisit the matrix when audience usage changes, product commitments change, a feature introduces a new browser dependency, or browser and automation releases alter the environments you test. Keep broadening coverage where evidence or user impact justifies it; do not expand the matrix merely to claim exhaustive coverage that no team can practically maintain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does compatibility testing mean every page must look identical in every browser?

No. Responsive and platform-specific presentation can differ; compatibility is primarily about preserving appropriate access to information and essential functionality.

Can an emulator replace testing on a real phone?

It can broaden coverage when physical hardware is unavailable, but it does not reproduce every device or hardware condition. Use real devices where practical.

Is a browser feature-support chart enough to confirm my app works?

No. It helps assess platform feature availability, but application flows, accessibility, usability, and the actual supported environments still need testing.
