Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →collision.exe is a filename, not a unique Windows component. Different, unrelated programs can use that name, so the name alone cannot tell you whether a particular copy is legitimate or malicious. A copy installed with a game or development tool may be normal; one appearing in Downloads, Temp, AppData, or an unsolicited attachment deserves investigation.
Do not open an unknown copy just to see what happens, and do not download a replacement from a random EXE or DLL site. Identify the file’s full path, publisher, signature, version, origin, hash, and parent application first. Then repair or remove the application that owns it, and use Microsoft Defender’s current scans if the file is suspicious.

Why there is no single answer to “What is collision.exe?”
Windows does not reserve collision.exe for one built-in service. The same basename has been used by unrelated software, including a Windows game distributed as Collision.exe, a demo binary in the MSYS2 osgBullet package, and a historical Shockwave Flash installer named chaines de collision.exe. Those examples are different programs with different publishers and installation locations.
That is why a search result, a task name, or an error dialog showing only collision.exe is incomplete evidence. The important identity is the complete file path and the application that placed the file there. Windows can also display an error when an expected executable has been deleted, quarantined, damaged, blocked, or separated from a required dependency.

Is collision.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no verdict. A digitally signed copy in the expected directory of software you intentionally installed can be benign. An unsigned copy that arrived through a crack, keygen, fake update, unsolicited attachment, or random mirror is high risk. Even an unsigned file is not automatically malware, and a valid signature does not prove that the file is desirable today; it tells you about the signer and whether the file was altered after signing.
Microsoft distinguishes unknown software, for which reputation data is limited, from confirmed malware. Reputation can change as a file is analyzed. Treat a warning as a reason to verify the source and scan the device, not as proof that every file with this name is infected. Malwarebytes makes the same basic point: an .exe can be malicious, but most executable files are not automatically viruses.

Signals that increase or reduce risk
| Signal | More reassuring | More concerning |
|---|---|---|
| Location | The folder belongs to a game or tool you installed from its official source. | Downloads, Temp, a random AppData subfolder, a removable drive, or a location you cannot explain. |
| Publisher | The expected company name appears in Properties and matches the parent application. | No publisher, an unexpected publisher, or metadata that does not match the application. |
| Digital signature | The signature is valid and belongs to the expected publisher. | No signature, an invalid signature, or a signer unrelated to the software. |
| Origin | Installed by a known installer, store, or update you initiated. | Crack, keygen, fake update, unsolicited attachment, or an unknown download. |
| Behavior | It runs only when the known parent application runs and produces expected activity. | It launches at startup without explanation, recreates itself, changes security settings, or generates repeated alerts. |
| Security reputation | A current scan finds no threat and the hash matches the publisher’s known release, when such a reference exists. | Defender or another reputable scanner identifies malware or a potentially unwanted application. |
How to check a collision.exe copy without launching it
Perform these checks on the exact file mentioned in the error. If more than one copy exists, record each path; deleting one copy may leave another, and a legitimate application may use a different copy from the suspicious one.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Record the full path. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the Location field. You can also hold Shift, right-click the file, and choose Copy as path. Do not rely on a shortened name shown in a notification.
- Check the General and Details tabs. Look for Product name, File description, Company, and File version. Compare those values with the game, utility, or package that supposedly installed the file. A blank description is a warning to investigate, not proof of malware.
- Inspect the signature. Open Properties and select Digital Signatures. Select a signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports it as valid. Check the signer name and certificate details. An absent or unexpected signer is one risk signal among several.
- Check when and how it appeared. Compare the file’s creation or modification time with the installation or update of the parent program. Think about the download that preceded it. If you cannot explain its arrival, do not approve it merely because the filename looks familiar.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. You can do this without executing the file. In PowerShell, use
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathcollision.exe" -Algorithm SHA256, replacing the path with the one you recorded. Compare the resulting hash only with a trustworthy publisher or release reference. Avoid uploading confidential or proprietary files to public analysis services. - Check the parent application. Ask which installed program needs this executable. Review Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11 or Windows 10, or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older systems. If no installed program explains the file, treat that absence as significant.
- Scan before opening. Right-click the file and choose the Microsoft Defender scan option when it is available. Keep Windows security intelligence current before scanning. Do not add an exclusion or choose “allow” until you understand why the file was flagged.
Use the evidence to classify the file
| What you find | Likely interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Known game or tool directory, expected product metadata, valid expected signature, clean scan | Probably a legitimate component. | Repair or update the parent application if it is producing an error; do not replace the file from a download site. |
| Known application directory but missing, damaged, or mismatched version | The installation may be incomplete or corrupted. | Use the application’s official repair, update, or reinstall function. |
| Unknown directory, no parent application, or unexpected startup entry | Unwanted software or a masquerading file is possible. | Uninstall the associated program if identifiable, scan, and investigate persistence. |
| Defender identifies malware | The copy should be treated as malicious until remediation is complete. | Quarantine it, perform the recommended scans, and follow Microsoft’s remediation guidance. |
| Unknown file with no detection but an unexplained origin | Safety is unestablished; a clean scan is not a guarantee. | Do not run it. Preserve its path and hash, and obtain the software only from a trusted source. |
How to fix collision.exe errors manually
Error began after installing or updating a game or utility
This is the most straightforward branch when you know the parent program. The error may mean that an update left an executable or dependency in an inconsistent state.

- Open the program’s own launcher or Windows’ installed-apps list and use its Repair, Verify, or equivalent maintenance command if one is provided. The exact label differs by application.
- Install pending updates from the application’s official publisher or store. Do not obtain a standalone
collision.exefrom an EXE repository. - If repair does not work, uninstall the application using its normal uninstaller. Restart Windows, then reinstall from the publisher’s official source or the store where you originally obtained it.
- After reinstalling, check that the new file’s path and product metadata match the application and run a Defender scan before launching it.
Reinstalling is appropriate only when you have identified the parent application. It is not a safe response to a filename by itself.
Windows says collision.exe is missing or cannot be found
A “file not found” message does not mean that downloading a replacement is safe. The file may have been quarantined, removed by an uninstaller, or expected by an incomplete installation.

- Read the entire error and note which application generated it. Check the shortcut’s Target field by right-clicking the shortcut and choosing Properties.
- Search the identified application’s official support documentation for the error and its supported repair method.
- Check Microsoft Defender’s protection history to see whether it quarantined the file. If it did, do not restore it until you have verified the publisher, path, and reason for the detection.
- Use the application’s official repair or reinstall process. If the application is no longer wanted, uninstall it instead of restoring a missing executable.
- After repair, recreate a shortcut only through the application’s installer or launcher. Do not point a shortcut at an unrelated file with the same basename.
Defender detects collision.exe or the file keeps returning
First, allow the security product to quarantine the detected copy. If the computer shows signs of active compromise, disconnect it from networks while you investigate; this limits possible communication but does not replace remediation.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates so the security intelligence is current.
- Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options. A full scan can take substantially longer than a quick scan.
- If the unwanted file persists or returns after restart, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same scan-options area. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads, which can help when active software interferes with removal.
- Review installed applications and remove software you do not recognize, especially software installed at the same time as the suspicious file. Restart and scan again.
- Follow Microsoft’s remediation instructions if a detection remains. For a device with persistent compromise, recovery from a known-clean backup or a clean Windows installation may be necessary.
Preserve the path, hash, detection name, and relevant timestamps before deleting evidence if the computer belongs to an organization or a professional incident-response investigation may be needed.
Best Value
An error appears at every startup, but no application is known
A startup reference can survive after an incomplete uninstall. Do not delete the executable first and assume the message is solved; removing the file can hide the cause while leaving the broken startup entry behind.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps to look for recently installed or unfamiliar software and uninstall only what you can identify.
- Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and note entries that point to the same path. Disable an entry only after recording its name and location; disabling is reversible and safer than deleting registry data immediately.
- Restart Windows and confirm whether the message stops. If it does, identify the owning application and use its official uninstaller or repair process.
- If the entry has no owner, the file is in an unexplained location, or the warning returns, run the Defender full and offline scans described above.
The file is blocked, access is denied, or Windows shows an unknown-software warning
Do not bypass a warning simply to make the error disappear. Windows may be warning because reputation data is limited, because the file is downloaded from the internet, or because its signature cannot be verified. Obtain the software from a trusted source, confirm the publisher and hash, and scan it. If the file is part of a legitimate application, use that application’s supported installer or repair function rather than changing security settings globally.
The application still fails after a clean reinstall
At this point, the basename may be incidental. Record the exact error text, event time, parent application version, Windows edition and version, file path, signature result, hash, and Defender result. Check the application’s official support material for dependencies or compatibility requirements. Do not substitute a same-named file from another program: two files called collision.exe can be unrelated and interchangeable only in name.

What not to do
- Do not launch an unknown copy as a test.
- Do not download
collision.exefrom a DLL or EXE repository, a crack site, or a random mirror. - Do not delete every file with this name; legitimate games and tools may use it.
- Do not whitelist a detection before verifying the file’s origin, signer, path, and parent application.
- Do not assume that an unsigned file is malware or that a signed file is automatically safe; weigh all available evidence.
- Do not restore a quarantined file merely because an application displays a missing-file error.
- Do not upload confidential files to public reputation services just to obtain a hash verdict.
When to seek additional help
Escalate to the software publisher or a qualified technician when the file is business-critical, the device shows multiple unexplained detections, security tools are disabled, accounts behave strangely, or the executable returns after offline scanning. Provide the exact path, SHA-256 hash, signer, product and version metadata, source of installation, detection name, and the complete error message. Those details distinguish a broken installation from a security incident far more reliably than the filename alone.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems; it can also adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, offer a real-time boost, shred files and keep an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days followed by a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
