CnctCk2k.exe (also written cnctck2k.exe) is a 32.8 KB support executable listed in an archived Brother FAX-1820C driver package dated July 14, 2015. A copy installed with that legacy Brother software may be legitimate, but the filename alone does not prove that every copy is safe. The practical test is its provenance, complete path, digital signature, hash, and results from an up-to-date Microsoft Defender scan.

What cnctck2k.exe is

The strongest documented identity for this filename is a support component of the legacy Brother FAX-1820C fax/printer software. An archived package index places CnctCk2k.exe in a directory named _Support_Language_Independent_OS_Independent_Files and lists a companion named CnctCk9x.exe. The indexed file size is 32.8 KB.

That is historical package evidence, not a current security certificate or a guarantee that a file found on your PC came from Brother. The archive is dated July 14, 2015, and current Brother downloads and Windows compatibility for this component have not been established. The .exe suffix merely means that Windows can treat the file as executable; it does not identify the owner or prove that the code is safe.

Observation What it tells you
File is 32.8 KB and came with installed FAX-1820C software Consistent with the archived package evidence, but not conclusive by itself
File is in a temporary, download, or randomly named folder Provenance is unconfirmed and requires extra scrutiny
File has a valid publisher signature that matches the installer Stronger evidence of origin; still scan the file
File appeared after a suspicious prompt, fake update, or command pasted into a terminal Treat the event as potentially malicious until scans are complete

Is cnctck2k.exe a virus?

There is no authoritative malware-family assignment or published hash verdict for this exact filename in the available evidence. That means you should not label every copy a virus, but you also should not trust a copy simply because it uses the familiar name, displays a familiar icon, or triggers an administrator prompt. Malware can use the same name as an old legitimate component.

Use the following distinction:

  • Likely legitimate context: the file arrived as part of your original Brother FAX-1820C installation, remains in that program’s directory, has a matching publisher signature, and passes a current Defender scan.
  • Untrusted context: the file was downloaded separately, arrived in an unexpected archive, runs from a user-writable temporary directory, lacks a signature, has a surprising network or startup behavior, or appeared after a deceptive prompt.

A mismatch with the historical 32.8 KB size or directory removes the package match; it does not, by itself, prove malware. Conversely, matching the size does not authenticate the contents, because a malicious file can be made the same size.

Verify the file without running it

Do not double-click an unexpected copy. Perform these checks first, preferably from an administrator account that you trust.

  1. Record the complete path. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and copy the location shown on the General tab. Note whether the path belongs to an installed Brother program, an installer cache, Downloads, a temporary folder, or another unexpected location. Also record when the file was created and modified.
  2. Identify what created it. Think back to the Brother software, driver disc, archive, or installer that was active when the file appeared. If you cannot connect it to software you intentionally installed, leave it unopened and continue with the security checks.
  3. Inspect the publisher and signature. In Properties, open Digital Signatures if that tab exists, select the signer, and choose Details. A valid signature should show that Windows can verify the signature and that the signer is consistent with the software you installed. An absent or invalid signature is a warning, not an automatic malware verdict.
  4. Compare the historical details. The archived Brother package lists 32.8 KB and the support-files directory described above. Treat those values as a reference point only; a different size or path means the file is not an exact historical match.
  5. Calculate a hash. Open PowerShell without launching the executable and run:
    Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:fullpathcnctck2k.exe"
Replace the example path with the path you recorded. Save the resulting SHA-256 value for your records. No authoritative hash for this filename is available here, so the command documents your copy rather than proving it is clean.
  6. Scan with Microsoft Defender. Update Windows security intelligence, right-click the file in File Explorer, and select Scan with Microsoft Defender when that option is available. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, install any pending protection updates, and run a Full scan.
  7. Do not override a warning casually. If Defender blocks, quarantines, or repeatedly flags the file, keep the quarantine record and do not restore the file merely to test whether the Brother program starts.

If the file looks suspicious or Windows reports malicious activity

Containment takes priority over trying to repair the executable. Microsoft Security Intelligence guidance for suspected malicious execution is to boot into Safe Mode so the malware is less likely to load.

  1. Disconnect the computer. Unplug Ethernet or turn off Wi-Fi. Do not sign in to banking, email, or other sensitive accounts from the affected Windows session.
  2. Enter Safe Mode. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. After restart choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. Use networking only when a security tool specifically requires it.
  3. Run Microsoft Defender Offline. From Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
  4. Run a full scan afterward. When Windows starts again, update protection intelligence if networking is restored safely and perform a full scan to check remaining files.
  5. Inspect automatic starts. Microsoft recommends examining auto-start locations with Autoruns. Look for entries that point to the suspicious path, have an unknown publisher, or appeared at the same time as the cnctck2k.exe alert. Disable an entry only when you understand what it belongs to; record the original setting so it can be restored.
  6. Secure accounts from a clean device. If the suspicious file ran or a scan found malware, change important passwords from a separate, trusted device and review recent sign-ins. Restore networking on the affected PC only after scans and account-security checks are complete.

Fix a normal cnctck2k.exe application error

An error dialog does not establish that the file is malicious. It may indicate that the parent Brother software is incomplete, damaged, or incompatible with the Windows installation. Because the exact user-facing error text and current official compatibility were not established, avoid commands or replacement files aimed at a guessed message.

  1. Capture the exact message. Record the wording, error code if shown, when it appears, and which action triggers it (startup, printing, fax setup, or uninstall). Note the Windows edition and version by opening Settings > System > About.
  2. Find the parent program. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows 10), look for Brother FAX-1820C software or a related driver package. The file’s folder and shortcut properties can also reveal the parent installation.
  3. Repair through the installed software when offered. Some Windows installers expose Modify or Repair in Control Panel > Programs and Features. Use that option only after verifying that the program is the Brother package you intended to keep.
  4. Reinstall from a verified source. If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the Brother application and restart Windows. Reinstall using original media or a download obtained directly from Brother’s official support channel for the FAX-1820C. Do not use a third-party “missing file” site.
  5. Test before restoring extras. After reinstalling, restart and test the fax/printer function that previously triggered the error. If the same message returns, record the new event and check whether the legacy software supports your Windows version before repeating the installation.

Do not substitute a random copy of cnctck2k.exe, a similarly named DLL, or an executable from another computer. Even a clean file from a different release can have incompatible dependencies and can obscure the real installation problem.

Can you delete cnctck2k.exe?

Deletion depends on whether the file still belongs to software you use and whether its provenance is trustworthy.

Brother FAX-1820C software is installed and working Leave the component in place. Removing it may break fax or printer functions.
You no longer use the Brother software Uninstall the parent Brother program first, restart, and remove only leftover files after confirming they are no longer referenced.
Defender identifies the file as malicious Use Defender’s quarantine or removal workflow; do not manually restore or run it.
File is an unexplained duplicate in Downloads or a temporary folder Scan it, preserve the path and hash for investigation, then delete it if no trusted application needs it.

Before manual deletion, create a restore point or backup of important documents. Deleting an executable does not remove a scheduled task, service, shortcut, or other unwanted component that may have launched it, which is why suspicious cases require the scan and auto-start checks above.

Where to get a missing cnctck2k.exe file

Do not download a lone copy from a “DLL fixer,” file mirror, or search-result attachment. Such sites can alter the file, bundle unwanted software, or provide a version unrelated to your Brother package. The documented relationship is to the archived Brother FAX-1820C driver package, not to a generic Windows component.

If a legitimate installation reports that the file is missing, obtain the complete FAX-1820C software from original Brother media or Brother’s verified support channel, then reinstall the package. A complete installer can restore its dependencies and registration information; copying one executable rarely does. Current availability and compatibility of that legacy package should be confirmed for your particular Windows edition before installation.

Why the filename may appear in different cases

Windows normally treats uppercase and lowercase letters in this filename as the same name, so CnctCk2k.exe and cnctck2k.exe are not automatically different programs. The meaningful differences are the full path, file metadata, signature, hash, parent installer, and behavior. A renamed executable can still be malicious, while a legitimate copy may be displayed with different capitalization by File Explorer or an installer.

A practical decision checklist

  • Recognize: Is the file associated with Brother FAX-1820C software that you intentionally installed?
  • Locate: Does its path belong to that installation rather than Downloads, Temp, or an unexplained folder?
  • Authenticate: What do Properties, the digital-signature details, and the SHA-256 hash show?
  • Scan: Has current Microsoft Defender completed a file scan and, when warranted, a Full or Offline scan?
  • Choose the response: Use repair or reinstall for a known, damaged legacy installation; isolate the PC and investigate in Safe Mode for suspicious behavior.
  • Preserve evidence: Keep the exact error text, path, timestamp, scan result, and hash if you need support or incident investigation.

What is known and what remains uncertain

The documented facts are narrow: an archived July 14, 2015 package lists a 32.8 KB CnctCk2k.exe support file and a CnctCk9x.exe companion under Brother FAX-1820C support files. The filename is not a Windows-core identity, and no authoritative source assigns it a malware family or publishes a definitive hash. Current Brother downloads, present-day Windows compatibility, and current retail availability for the FAX-1820C were not verified. Those limits are why provenance and local verification matter more than the name alone.
