CNAB4FW.EXE is the filename used by an executable observed inside Canon LBP2900 printer-driver installer samples. The filename and the Canon association are useful clues, but they are not an identity certificate. Any program can be renamed to cnab4fw.exe, and even a file copied from a legitimate installer can be damaged, replaced, or bundled with an unsafe download.

ANY.RUN placed CNAB4FW.EXE in an LBP2900 driver-installer sample and recorded an untrusted certificate plus screenshot functionality during that run. Hybrid Analysis also placed it in an LBP2900 installer sample, reported one antivirus-engine detection, and listed indicators such as dropped executables and unusual PE characteristics. These are observations of particular submitted samples. They do not establish a universal hash, signer, supported Windows-version list, or verdict for every file with this name.

What those reports mean for your computer
An analysis sandbox observes one uploaded file under one set of conditions. “Untrusted certificate” means the certificate presented by that sample was not accepted as trustworthy; it does not prove that every Canon package is malicious. A screenshot capability can be legitimate in some software, but it is also a behavior worth investigating when it appears in an unexpected installer. Likewise, one antivirus engine detection is a signal for triage, not a complete identification of the file on your PC. Check the local copy’s path, signer, hash, origin, and current Defender result instead of copying a verdict from an online report.

There is no authoritative Canon page publishing one universal CNAB4FW.EXE SHA-256 value, signer certificate, supported Windows-version matrix, or complete error-code list. Perform these checks while the file is not running. If Windows is showing an error, preserve the exact wording and the time it appeared; those details help distinguish an installer problem from a security event. Avoid double-clicking the file to “test” it, and do not rename it as a substitute for analysis.
- Record the complete path. In File Explorer, right-click the alert or file and choose Open file location, or copy the path from the address bar. Note whether it is under a Canon printer-driver folder, Downloads, Temp, or a user-profile directory. Do not launch it merely to see what happens. If several alerts appear, record every path because each copy may need a separate scan.
- Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review Details. Open Digital Signatures if that tab exists; select a signature and choose Details to check whether Windows reports it as valid and whether the signer is expected. An absent, invalid, or unexpected signer is a warning, not a complete verdict. A valid signature is also not a guarantee that the file is appropriate for your machine.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. Open PowerShell and run:

- Scan before execution. In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. - Preserve useful evidence. If Defender reports a threat, keep the detection name, path, hash, error text, Windows version, and printer model. What to do when Defender detects cnab4fw.exe
Quarantine first
Use Windows Security’s recommended quarantine or removal action. Update Defender’s security intelligence before rescanning. Use Microsoft Defender Offline for a recurring detection
If the same item returns after a restart, choose Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans before the normal desktop loads, making it harder for persistent malware to hide. Save open work first because the restart is automatic. After Windows starts again, review Protection history and record the result.
Protect accounts if compromise is plausible
From a known-clean device, change important passwords and review active account sessions. Do not use the potentially affected computer for password changes until it has been assessed. Give support or an incident-response professional the path, hash, detection name, and timeline rather than deleting all evidence immediately. If the computer contains sensitive work, disconnect it from networks while you arrange help, but do not destroy the file before documenting it.
Fix a clean-but-failing printer installation
If Defender is clean, the file came with a legitimate Canon installation, and the problem began during printer setup, treat it as an installer or Windows configuration issue rather than proof of malware. A clean result does not make the filename trustworthy by itself; it simply makes an ordinary installation fault more plausible when the provenance and path also make sense.
Restart and use built-in repair options
- Restart Windows and try the print operation once more. A restart clears a pending installer state and reloads driver services.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Select the related Canon software or printer package. If Windows offers Advanced options, use Repair first; if that does not help, use Reset. Availability varies by application.
- If removal is blocked or the package is incomplete, run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. It is intended for corrupted registry keys and incomplete uninstall data that prevent a program or driver package from being removed.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannowDISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when possible. Restart after both commands finish and note any message that says repairs could not be completed. These commands repair Windows components; they do not authenticate, disinfect, or certify a third-party executable. If both commands complete successfully but Defender still detects CNAB4FW.EXE, continue with the security workflow rather than repeating system repair commands.

Can you delete cnab4fw.exe?

Why cnab4fw.exe may keep appearing
