cityma.exe has no verified identity in the authoritative results available for this filename. It is not documented there as a Microsoft component, a named third-party program, or a known malware family. Treat it as an unknown executable until you establish where it came from, who signed it, and what Windows Security reports.

Do not launch the file to “test” it, add it to an antivirus exclusion, or download a replacement from an unverified fix site. First identify the file and scan the computer; only then should you repair or remove the parent application.

What cityma.exe is—and what the name does not tell you

Windows uses the .exe extension for executable programs. The name before that extension is chosen by the software publisher, an installer, or sometimes an attacker. Therefore, seeing cityma.exe in a popup, Task Manager, a startup list, or an error log does not prove that the file is installed, legitimate, or malicious.

No authoritative result available for this exact filename identifies a publisher, product, cryptographic hash, documented component, or reliable malware-family record. That is an evidence gap, not a safety verdict. A file with an unfamiliar name can be a harmless component of software you installed, a damaged leftover from an uninstall, or an unwanted program. The filename alone cannot distinguish those cases.

Windows reputation features make the same distinction. Microsoft describes unrecognized software as higher risk until its reputation or behavior establishes trust. When Smart App Control is enabled in enforcement mode, it is designed to block malware, potentially unwanted apps, and unknown unsigned code. A warning from that feature means Windows lacks sufficient trust; it is not, by itself, proof that cityma.exe is malware.

Is cityma.exe safe?

There is no defensible yes-or-no answer from the name alone. Consider the file unresolved until you have checked its complete path, publisher, signature, origin, and scan results.

What you find What it suggests What to do
A valid signature from the known publisher of an application you intentionally installed, with the file in that application’s normal program folder More consistent with a legitimate component, although a signature does not guarantee that the application is desirable or that the file is error-free Keep the evidence, update or repair that application from its official vendor, and scan the file and system
The file is in Downloads, a temporary directory, a randomly named folder, or a location you do not recognize Higher-risk provenance; location is a warning signal, not proof of infection Do not run it. Scan first and investigate the installer or download that created it
No publisher, an invalid signature, or an unsigned file with no known software connection Identity remains unverified Do not create an exclusion or use registry “fixes.” Quarantine or remove it only after following the detection and parent-application steps below
Windows Security detects it or the detection returns after a restart Security software has identified a threat or unwanted behavior Quarantine it and follow the alert’s removal guidance; use an Offline scan if it persists

A clean scan is useful evidence, but it does not turn an unidentified file into a known, trusted component. Preserve the exact alert text and continue checking its source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the file without executing it

Start with evidence that Windows can provide without opening the program. If the message is only a “Windows cannot find cityma.exe” warning, the file may already be missing and the popup may be a stale startup, scheduled-task, or shortcut reference. You can still investigate the reference.

  1. Open the referring entry. For a running process or a Task Manager alert, right-click the entry and choose the option that opens its file location. If the alert offers no such option, note the application, startup item, or task name shown beside it.
  2. Record the complete path. Copy the drive letter and every folder name. Also record the file size and modified time. A path under a known application’s own installation directory is different from one in a user download or a temporary folder.
  3. Check the publisher and signature. In File Explorer, open the file’s Properties and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs when present. An absent or invalid signature leaves the identity unresolved; it is not a reason to bypass Windows Security.
  4. Connect it to software you recognize. Compare the folder with programs listed under Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows). Ask whether you deliberately installed that product and whether its vendor documentation names this executable.
  5. Preserve a hash if you need outside technical help. In PowerShell, after copying the path from File Explorer, run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:fullpathcityma.exe". A hash identifies that exact file version; it does not, by itself, establish that the file is safe. Do not upload personal or confidential files to an untrusted scanner.
  6. Do not launch it for testing. Opening an unknown executable can change the evidence, create persistence, or expose data. Do not disable reputation checks or add an antivirus exclusion while the identity is unresolved.

Scan with Windows Security before repairing anything

Microsoft’s malware guidance recommends an up-to-date, real-time security product such as Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Windows Security is built into supported Windows editions, so begin there rather than with a generic cleaner or registry utility.

Update security intelligence

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection, then open Protection updates and select Check for updates (the wording can vary slightly by Windows release).
  3. Let the update finish before starting the scan. If the computer is offline because you are containing a suspected infection, reconnect only long enough to obtain current security intelligence, then disconnect again if the alert indicates active persistence.

Run a full scan

  1. In Virus & threat protection, select Scan options.
  2. Choose Full scan and start it. This examines the installed drives rather than only the locations checked by a quick scan.
  3. When the scan completes, open Protection history and read the detection name, affected path, and action. If Windows Security detects cityma.exe, choose quarantine or the removal action it recommends. Do not restore the file merely because an application reports that it is missing.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when a threat returns

Persistent malware can hide while normal Windows is running. Microsoft Defender Offline restarts the computer into a separate scanning environment and checks the system outside the ordinary Windows session. Save your work, connect the computer to power, and start the Offline scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. The restart is expected. Review Protection history after Windows loads again.

If a detection repeats after reboot, disconnect from networks while you contain it, then inspect recently installed programs, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and browser downloads. Remove only entries you can identify, and keep the detection path and name for support. Do not delete random registry values or system files in an attempt to make a warning disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Windows says “cityma.exe has stopped working”

This message describes a program crash, not the program’s identity. Apply the following branch only after the scans above are clean and you can associate the executable with software you intentionally installed.

1. Capture the exact error

Write down the complete text, the time it appeared, and what action preceded it. Note whether the crash occurs at startup, when opening a particular document, or only after a Windows or application update. Keep the path, publisher, version, and hash you recorded; those details are more useful than the filename alone.

2. Repair the parent application

Use the application’s own repair option if its vendor provides one, or open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application, choose Advanced options, and use Repair when that option exists. Repair changes application files without removing personal data in many apps, but the exact behavior is vendor-specific. Back up important data first.

3. Reinstall only from the official publisher

If repair fails, uninstall the parent program, restart Windows, and download its installer from the publisher’s official site. Avoid bundled download portals and pages offering a replacement cityma.exe; compromised webpages and bundled installers are common malware routes. If the installer offers optional software, decline anything you did not request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check whether Windows blocked the file

A downloaded executable can carry a security block. In the file’s Properties, look for an Unblock option and use it only when you have verified the publisher, source, and signature. Do not unblock an unknown file simply to make the error disappear.

5. Repair Windows only when the evidence points to Windows

If other trusted applications also fail to start, the problem may involve executable associations or permissions rather than cityma.exe itself. Microsoft Q&A describes .exe as the standard Windows executable extension and discusses association and permission failures, but that guidance does not identify this filename. Treat association repair as a system-wide troubleshooting step, not as proof that cityma.exe is legitimate. Back up first and use Microsoft’s documented recovery options for your Windows version.

Fixing “Windows cannot find cityma.exe”

This alert usually means that something still points to a file that has been moved, deleted, or quarantined. Removing the reference is safer than downloading a replacement when you cannot establish the file’s publisher.

Find the source of the reference

  • Check Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager’s Startup apps tab for an entry associated with the alert.
  • Open Task Scheduler and inspect recently added tasks and their Actions. Do not delete a task until you know which installed application created it.
  • Check the Startup folders by pressing Win+R, entering shell:startup, and then checking shell:common startup. Remove only a shortcut you have positively linked to the unwanted or uninstalled program.
  • Review browser download history and recently installed software. A browser extension or bundled installer may have created the reference.

After identifying the parent program, uninstall it through Windows Settings or the vendor’s uninstaller, restart, and confirm that the reference is gone. If the entry belongs to software you still need, reinstall that software from its official source instead of copying a standalone executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When removal is the safer choice

If the publisher cannot be established, the path is suspicious, the file is unsigned, or no legitimate parent program remains, do not attempt registry edits copied from an unrelated “DLL fixer” or registry-cleaner page. Keep the machine protected, follow any Windows Security detection action, and remove the parent software or startup reference you can identify.

Before uninstalling, back up documents and other personal data. Do not back up the unknown executable itself unless a qualified incident-response professional specifically requests a forensic copy. After removal, restart, run another full scan, and check Protection history for a repeat detection. A repeated alert means the source or persistence mechanism has not been removed; inspect scheduled tasks, startup entries, browser downloads, and recently installed applications again.

What not to do

  • Do not assume that a familiar-looking name is a Microsoft file.
  • Do not run cityma.exe to see what happens.
  • Do not add a Windows Security exclusion while the file is unidentified. Exclusions reduce protection, and Microsoft documents that risk.
  • Do not download a replacement from a forum, “DLL repair” page, or random file archive.
  • Do not disable Smart App Control or reputation protection merely to bypass a warning.
  • Do not delete registry keys in bulk or use a registry cleaner to solve a filename-specific error.
  • Do not upload personal files to an untrusted online scanner.

Information to collect before asking for help

A definitive identification requires more than the filename. Prepare this checklist for your software vendor or a qualified technician:

  • Full file path, file size, modified time, and product or file version
  • Publisher name and digital-signature status
  • SHA-256 hash, if you can calculate it without sharing the file
  • Exact Windows edition and version
  • The complete error or Windows Security detection name
  • Whether the alert appears at startup, during a particular application, or after a download
  • The installer or download that created the file, including where it was obtained
  • Whether a full scan and Microsoft Defender Offline scan were clean, and whether the alert returned after a restart

These details let a responder distinguish a missing reference from a crashing legitimate component or an active unwanted program. Without them, any claim that cityma.exe is safe or malicious is speculation.
