Because the file belongs to an emulator package, Windows does not require it for normal operation. It is not a native Windows process, driver or system DLL. A missing-file message matters only if the Citra build you are trying to run expects it. If you installed a newer successor, do not assume that copying this legacy executable into the new folder will restore multiplayer; mixing releases can create additional incompatibilities.
Is citra-room.exe safe?
There is no universal safety verdict for every copy of a filename. Malware can be renamed to look like a legitimate executable, and a genuine program can be copied into an unexpected directory. Judge the specific file by its source, location and surrounding package.

In Task Manager, right-click the process, choose Open file location, and inspect the folder. Treat each location separately, and record which copy actually launches when Windows reports an error. A path by itself is evidence, not a final malware determination.
Confirm where the package came from
Use an authentic project archive or a trusted successor release. The preserved Citra notice states: “The only official Citra Emulator website is https://citra-emu.org, and any other websites pretending to be official should not be trusted.” Do not obtain a replacement EXE from a site offering isolated DLL downloads, “cracks,” repacked games or a one-click repair.
Keep the original archive until the clean extraction has been tested. That gives you a known source if a security product flags a file or if support asks which package produced the executable. Avoid installers or mirrors that change the package contents without clearly identifying the build.

If these files are absent, a startup error may reflect an incomplete extraction rather than a malicious citra-room.exe. Replacing only the EXE can create version mismatches and does not restore the libraries it needs. The same warning applies to copying DLLs from another Citra release: matching names do not guarantee matching versions or interfaces.
Quarantine suspicious copies
Pause before launching a copy that is unsigned, has been renamed, sits outside the emulator folder or produces unexpected network activity. A digital signature check is useful evidence but is not a complete malware determination. In the file’s Properties window, review the signer information when a Digital Signatures tab is present, but do not treat the absence of a signature alone as proof that the file is malicious.
Quarantine the suspicious file with your security software, preserve the path and filename for investigation, and obtain a clean complete package instead of downloading a standalone replacement. The archived Citra pages do not publish a malware verdict for every copy bearing this name. If your security product has already blocked the file, review its detection details before choosing any restore action.
Can you delete citra-room.exe?
Deleting the file is not a general repair. If it is part of a Citra installation, removal can disable the room or local-wireless function and may leave the rest of the package in an inconsistent state. If Windows or Citra specifically reports that the executable is missing, deleting another copy will not solve the problem.
Remove it only when you have decided to remove that Citra package or you have verified that the file is an unrelated or suspicious duplicate. Back up saves and configuration first. For a portable installation, close every Citra process and remove the complete folder you no longer want; for an installed build, use its normal Windows uninstall entry if one exists. Why citra-room.exe errors occur

Missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
The archived Windows guidance lists the x64 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 as a required dependency for the documented setup. A runtime error can therefore appear even when all Citra DLLs are present. Installing an unrelated architecture or copying an individual runtime DLL does not provide the same repair.
Corrupt configuration
A bad graphics, input or networking setting can prevent the application from opening. Resetting the configuration is preferable to deleting random files because it returns documented settings to defaults while leaving the program package intact. This is especially relevant after changing renderer, controller or networking options and then seeing an immediate crash.
Graphics driver or hardware limitations
Citra support guidance directs users to check minimum requirements and install GPU drivers through the GPU manufacturer’s website. The Windows built-in updater may not provide the driver version needed by the emulator. Unsupported hardware or an outdated driver can cause crashes, rendering failures or an immediate exit.
Wrong build or mixed versions
Copying citra-room.exe from one release into another can mix incompatible Qt, SDL2 or configuration components. The filename may match while the binary interfaces do not. This is why a fresh folder is a better diagnostic than repeatedly overwriting the same installation.

- Close Citra, the room process and any game that uses the emulator. In Task Manager, confirm that no related process remains before replacing files.
- Obtain the complete Windows archive from an authentic project archive or trusted successor release. Avoid a standalone EXE or DLL download.
- Create a new folder rather than extracting over a damaged installation. This prevents old libraries from being mixed with new ones.
- Extract the entire archive and verify that the executable is accompanied by its Qt5 DLLs,
SDL2.dlland theplatformsqwindows.dllplugin. - Launch the executable from that folder. If it starts, your previous installation was incomplete or inconsistent; copy only personal saves or other data you have verified, not old program DLLs.
Windows security software may block an archive or quarantine a file. Review the security product’s event before restoring anything; do not disable protection simply to force an unverified executable to run. If extraction itself reports an error, download the complete archive again from the trusted source rather than filling the folder with manually sourced files.

3. Install the required Visual C++ runtime
- Use Microsoft’s official download channel for the x64 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 named in the archived Citra setup guidance.
- Choose the architecture that matches the documented build. Installing an x86 package alone will not satisfy an x64 dependency.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it, then launch Citra from the clean package again.
- If the installer reports that the runtime is already present, use its repair option where available rather than downloading a DLL from a third-party site.
Do not copy random versions of msvcp or vcruntime DLLs into the Citra directory. Those files must come from the Microsoft runtime package so that versioning and servicing remain consistent. If the runtime installer itself fails, record its error separately; that is a Windows dependency problem, not evidence that citra-room.exe should be replaced.
4. Reset Citra’s configuration
- Open Citra if the main window remains available.
- Choose Configuration, then General.
- Select Reset All Settings and confirm.
- Close and reopen Citra, then test the operation that previously failed.
A reset can remove custom controller mappings, graphics choices and other preferences. Record settings you may need to recreate. If Citra cannot stay open long enough to reach this menu, use the clean-package test first and preserve your configuration folder before attempting any manual reset so that saves and settings are not accidentally lost.

- Identify the graphics adapter in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display or in Device Manager.
- Go to the GPU manufacturer’s support page and select the exact adapter and Windows edition.
- Install the current driver supplied by that vendor, following its clean-install or reset option if offered.
- Restart Windows and test Citra again.
The archived support instruction is explicit: “Always install your GPU drivers through your GPU vendor’s website.” Windows Update can be useful for ordinary maintenance, but it may not provide the driver required for a particular emulator build. Note the driver version in your troubleshooting record so you can correlate a change with the crash behavior.
6. Check minimum requirements and competing graphics settings
Compare the computer’s CPU, GPU, RAM and Windows edition with the requirements published for the Citra build or successor you are using. If the machine falls below those requirements, a missing DLL repair cannot make unsupported hardware reliable.
Close overlays, recording tools and other programs that inject into games while testing. This is a diagnostic step, not a claim that every overlay is incompatible. If the error disappears only after an overlay is closed, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict.
