ci.exe is not one uniquely identified Windows component. The same filename is used by unrelated legitimate software, including Softinterface’s Convert Image installer and the Python scikit-ci command-line tool, while a separate file with the name has been reported as the Ransom.Sabsik malware. The filename, icon, or folder alone cannot prove whether your copy is safe. Identify the exact path, publisher, digital signature, hash, and program that created it before running, deleting, or repairing anything.
What ci.exe means on Windows
Windows executable names are not globally unique. Any installer or application can create a file called ci.exe, so the name does not identify a single Microsoft program. “CI” can also appear in unrelated product names and in messages about Windows Code Integrity. Those are different issues: Microsoft’s Code Integrity is a kernel security feature that checks whether kernel drivers are cryptographically signed by an authority trusted by Microsoft; it is not proof that every file named ci.exe belongs to Windows.

Two documented, legitimate uses illustrate the ambiguity. Softinterface distributes a “Convert Image Setup” executable named ci.exe, signed by Softinterface, Inc. The Python scikit-ci project installs a ci executable in Python’s Scripts directory and documents invoking it with python -m ci. A third-party malware record describes a different file with the same name. These identities must be separated by path and file metadata, not by spelling.

| Example | Expected location or context | Publisher or identity evidence | Security evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Convert Image Setup | Created by the Softinterface image-conversion installer | Softinterface, Inc.; signed executable | HerdProtect reported 0 of 68 detections in its analysis on 2026-09-24 |
| scikit-ci command | Python installation’s Scripts directory; can run with python -m ci |
Installed as part of the scikit-ci Python package | Identity depends on the Python environment and package source |
| Ransom.Sabsik sample | ThreatInfo recorded temporary and user-profile locations | Specific sample identified by MD5 b3e4f88f34c64132f0db18ebe76c5a14 |
ThreatInfo/GridinSoft listed Ransom.Sabsik; first seen 2023-10-03, latest analysis 2023-10-08 |
The Softinterface result is evidence about that signed sample, not a blanket approval for every ci.exe. Likewise, the ThreatInfo result is tied to one exact hash; it does not mean every file with this filename is ransomware.

Is your ci.exe safe?
Treat an unexpected executable as untrusted until you can connect it to software you intentionally installed. A file in an application’s own directory with a valid signature from the expected vendor is materially different from a newly created copy in a random Temp, Downloads, or user-profile folder. Location is a clue, not a verdict: installers and legitimate command-line tools can use temporary working directories, and malware can copy itself into familiar directories.
1. Record the complete path
- When an alert, crash dialog, Task Manager entry, or shortcut mentions
ci.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location where available. - In File Explorer, hold Shift, right-click the file, choose Copy as path, and save the complete path, including the drive letter and filename.
- Note the creation and modification times. Compare them with the time you installed an application, opened an email attachment, downloaded an installer, or first saw the error.
Do not make a delete decision from a shortened display such as “ci.exe” or from a process name alone. A full path such as a known vendor’s program directory provides context that the bare filename does not.
2. Inspect Properties and the digital signature
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and review the General and Details tabs for product name, description, company, and file version.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the certificate is within its validity period.
- Compare the signer with the software you believe installed the file. A valid signature helps establish origin and integrity, but it does not prove that the program is appropriate for your particular installation or that a signed installer was obtained from a trustworthy source.
An unsigned file is not automatically malware, especially for small developer tools, but an unexpected unsigned executable deserves a higher level of scrutiny. A signature from an unrelated publisher is also a reason to stop and investigate rather than assume that “signed” means “safe.”
3. Calculate a cryptographic hash
Use a hash to distinguish one binary from another, even when both are called ci.exe. In PowerShell, run:

Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathci.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Replace the example path with the exact path you recorded. Windows also includes a command-line utility that can calculate SHA-256:
certutil -hashfile "C:fullpathci.exe" SHA256
Copy the resulting value without spaces and compare it with a vendor release record or an incident report for that exact file. If a report uses MD5, you can calculate it with certutil -hashfile "C:fullpathci.exe" MD5, but use MD5 only for matching an existing record; SHA-256 is the stronger identifier for new records. The ThreatInfo entry tied to MD5 b3e4f88f34c64132f0db18ebe76c5a14 cannot be generalized to another hash.
4. Scan before execution
If you did not expect the file, it was newly created, its signature is missing or invalid, or security software has flagged it, do not double-click it to “see what happens.” Isolate the file and run a reputable on-demand malware scan. Preserve the full path and hash so a security professional or incident-response process can identify exactly what was examined. If the scan detects a threat, follow the scanner’s quarantine and remediation instructions and avoid restoring the file merely because an application stops working.

Review the software installed around the file’s creation time. Check your browser’s download history, recent installers, scheduled tasks, Startup entries in Task Manager, and shortcuts that reference the path. Event Viewer can help correlate process, installer, or application events with the timestamp. If a known program owns the file, use that program’s repair or uninstall process rather than deleting an individual executable. If no legitimate owner can be established, keep the file isolated while you investigate.

Why ci.exe may appear in Temp or AppData
Installers commonly unpack a temporary executable before copying program files into their final directory. A Python package may place its command in the active environment’s Scripts folder, which can itself be under a user profile when Python was installed per-user or inside a virtual environment. Those are legitimate explanations for a non-system path.
At the same time, malware frequently uses writable user-profile and temporary directories because standard users can create files there without administrator approval. A Temp or AppData location therefore increases the need to check the signer, hash, parent process, and creation time; it does not prove infection. The decisive question is which exact file is present and what software or task launched it.
How to fix errors associated with ci.exe
First capture the exact error text and path. “ci.exe has stopped working,” “The application was unable to start,” a missing-DLL message, and a Code Integrity or driver-signing warning have different causes. The following sequence repairs Windows components without assuming that ci.exe itself is a Windows system file.
1. Protect your data and remove the file from the decision loop
- Save open work and make a current backup of important documents.
- If the file is suspicious, disconnect it from normal use by quarantining it with your security software; do not run it while troubleshooting.
- If the error appears only when a particular application starts, record that application’s name and version before changing files.
2. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- At the elevated prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before System File Checker because DISM supplies the files SFC may need to repair corruption. The command can take time and may appear to pause; do not close the window while it is working.

3. Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft describes this command as scanning protected system files and replacing corrupted files with a cached copy. Missing or damaged system files can cause Windows features to fail, generate system errors, become unresponsive, or freeze. Restart Windows after the scan if it reports that repairs were made, then repeat the action that produced the error.
4. Handle SFC results that are not clean
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: protected system files were not identified as corrupted. Continue with application-specific checks, signature review, and malware triage rather than deleting
ci.exe. - “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: restart and test the affected operation again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: inspect the CBS log for the affected filenames and use a known-good source appropriate to the Windows installation. Do not download a random replacement executable.
- “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation”: Microsoft advises running SFC in Safe Mode and checking the
PendingDeletesandPendingRenamesfolders under%WinDir%WinSxSTemp.
To enter Safe Mode, open Settings → System → Recovery on Windows 11 (or Settings → Update & Security → Recovery on Windows 10), choose Advanced startup → Restart now, then select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart and choose Safe Mode. The labels can vary slightly by Windows edition.
5. Repair or reinstall the owning application
If the path, publisher, and hash identify a legitimate third-party program, use Settings → Apps → Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings → Apps → Apps & features (Windows 10) to select that program and choose its available repair, modify, or uninstall option. Download a fresh installer only from the software publisher you have verified. Reinstalling the parent application is safer than copying a replacement ci.exe from a generic EXE or DLL download site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor scikit-ci, check which Python environment is active and whether its Scripts directory is on the expected path. Running python -m ci uses the interpreter’s installed module and can help distinguish a package problem from an unrelated executable found elsewhere. Avoid deleting a Python environment’s command until you know which project depends on it.

6. Check startup, scheduled tasks, and shortcuts
If the error returns after reboot, open Task Manager’s Startup apps tab and review entries that launch the recorded path. Open Task Scheduler and inspect recently created or modified tasks, especially those that run from Temp or a user-profile directory. Examine application shortcuts and the Target field for unexpected arguments. Disable an unknown launch entry only after recording it and scanning the referenced file; deleting the task can remove evidence needed to understand persistence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the message mentions Code Integrity or driver signing
A Code Integrity warning usually concerns whether a kernel driver or another binary meets Windows signing policy, not whether the filename ci.exe is inherently malicious. Microsoft recommends using log evidence to identify the rejected file and, where appropriate, verifying signatures with the Windows SDK’s signtool.
Collect the relevant logs
- Open Event Viewer and go to Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → CodeIntegrity → Operational.
- Review
setupapi.dev.login%WinDir%INFfor driver-installation details. - Check Windows Security audit events around the failure time.
- Record the rejected file’s full path, signer, timestamp, and hash before changing it.
Where the Windows SDK is installed, a signature check can be performed with a command such as:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchsigntool verify /pa /v "C:fullpathci.exe"
Use the output to identify the certificate chain and verification result. Do not disable Secure Boot or Code Integrity merely to make an unknown executable run. Policy changes reduce protection and should be reserved for a documented compatibility or recovery procedure after the publisher and purpose are established.
Should you delete ci.exe?
Delete it only when you have established that it is an unwanted file, preserved the path and hash, and confirmed that no legitimate application or Windows repair process needs it. A file in C:Windows, a verified application directory, or a Python environment should not be removed just because its name looks unfamiliar. Removing it can break the owning program and may cause an installer or scheduled task to recreate it.
If a reputable scanner quarantines the exact file, follow the scanner’s instructions rather than manually restoring or replacing it. If the file is merely an obsolete installer left in a temporary directory, close the program that created it, confirm that no installation is in progress, and use Windows’ normal storage-cleanup or the application’s uninstaller. Keep the evidence when the file is suspicious: the full path, hash, signature details, alert name, and relevant event-log entries.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume that every
ci.exeis the same binary. - Do not treat one antivirus verdict as applying to every file with that name; compare the exact hash.
- Do not download a replacement from a generic DLL or EXE site.
- Do not use registry cleaners instead of DISM, SFC, application repair, and malware triage.
- Do not disable Secure Boot or Code Integrity to bypass an unexplained warning.
- Do not delete a file from
C:Windowsor an application directory until its owner and purpose are established.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files; it also offers settings tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category lasting at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
