What Is Celestia (TIA)? How Its Modular Blockchain and Data Availability Work

By Freedom251 Team · · 8 min read

Celestia is a modular data-availability network. It orders and publishes transaction data, while separate rollups or other networks execute transactions and settle their results. Its native token, TIA, pays for data “blobspace,” can serve as a rollup’s gas currency, secures Celestia through staking, and gives holders a role in governance.

Celestia is not a permanent archive. Its protocol makes published data available for retrieval, but historical data can later be pruned from ordinary nodes. That distinction—and Celestia’s use of data-availability sampling (DAS) and namespaced Merkle trees (NMTs)—is central to understanding what the network does.

What Celestia is

Celestia describes itself as “a modular data availability network: it orders blobs and keeps them available while execution and settlement live on layers above.” A blob is a package of data, such as the transaction data a rollup needs to publish for independent verification.

On a conventional monolithic blockchain, one chain performs four jobs together:

  • Settlement: resolving disputes or finalizing results.
  • Consensus: agreeing on the order of blocks.
  • Data availability (DA): publishing the data needed to verify those results.

Celestia specializes in consensus and DA. A rollup can use Celestia to publish its transaction data, then execute that data in its own virtual machine and settle results on a layer chosen by its developers. Multiple rollups can share the same Celestia base without sharing one execution environment.

Why modularity matters

Celestia Labs characterizes modular blockchains as systems that “specialize and optimize to perform a given function.” Separating functions lets a rollup team choose its execution software, upgrade that software independently, and use a common DA layer rather than building a complete base chain from scratch. The trade-off is that the rollup must operate or select additional components for execution, settlement and historical data management.

Function Celestia’s role Typical role of a rollup or higher layer
Execution Does not execute the rollup’s transactions Runs the virtual machine, applies state transitions and produces results
Settlement Does not settle application disputes by itself Publishes proofs, dispute results or state commitments on a settlement layer
Consensus Orders Celestia blocks and confirms commitments Uses the ordered data to derive and verify its own chain state
Data availability Publishes blobs and lets nodes verify that the data can be retrieved Posts transaction data and downloads the namespace assigned to the application

How a rollup uses Celestia

A rollup still performs its own execution. Celestia supplies a credible publication and ordering layer for the input data that execution depends on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Collect transactions. The rollup’s sequencer receives user transactions and arranges them into a batch.
  2. Create a blob. The batch is formatted as data that Celestia can publish. The rollup places its data in an application namespace so it can later retrieve only that portion.
  3. Submit a PayForBlobs transaction. The rollup pays Celestia’s blobspace fee in TIA and references the data commitment.
  4. Celestia orders and publishes the data. Validators include the commitment in a block and make the encoded shares available through the network.
  5. Execute and settle elsewhere. The rollup downloads its namespace, executes the transactions, and uses its chosen settlement mechanism for proofs or finalized state.

Because execution is separate, two rollups can use different virtual machines or rules while relying on the same Celestia consensus and DA guarantees. The rollup team remains responsible for sequencer operation, execution nodes, settlement integration and the ability to recover old data.

How data availability sampling (DAS) works

Data availability answers a specific question: has a block’s data been published, and can it be downloaded? It is not the same as proving that the data is valid according to a rollup’s execution rules. DAS lets a light node gain confidence in availability without downloading every byte of every block.

1. Arrange the block in a matrix

Celestia divides block data into shares and places those shares in a k × k matrix. The original shares are extended with two-dimensional Reed–Solomon erasure coding, producing a 2k × 2k matrix containing parity shares as well as the original data.

2. Commit to rows and columns

Merkle trees are built for the rows and columns of the extended matrix. Their roots are combined into a commitment placed in the block header. A share requested later can therefore be accompanied by a Merkle proof showing that it belongs to the committed block.

3. Sample randomly

A light node asks bridge nodes for randomly selected shares and their Merkle proofs. It checks each proof against the block commitment. The light node does not need to retrieve the complete matrix to test whether data was broadly published.

4. Use erasure coding to reconstruct missing pieces

With enough shares, honest bridge nodes can reconstruct the original block even if some shares are unavailable. Repeated successful samples make it increasingly unlikely that a producer withheld a substantial part of the block while still passing the checks.

DAS is probabilistic rather than an exhaustive download. A single sample cannot prove that every share exists; confidence increases with the number and independence of valid samples. More light nodes sampling independently can support larger blocks while each individual node keeps a relatively small workload.

Namespaced Merkle trees let applications fetch their own data

Celestia partitions block data into namespaces, commonly assigning one namespace to each rollup or application. Namespaced Merkle trees provide proofs for ranges inside those namespaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a rollup requests its data, it can ask for the range associated with its namespace rather than downloading unrelated applications’ shares. The NMT proof also lets the rollup verify that the returned range is complete: the response is not merely a convenient subset chosen by a serving node. This reduces retrieval bandwidth and gives each application a cryptographic way to check that its own published data has not been silently omitted.

What TIA does

Use How it works
Blobspace fees Rollups submit PayForBlobs transactions and pay the associated DA fees in TIA.
Optional rollup gas token A new rollup can use TIA as its gas token and currency instead of issuing a separate token at launch.
Proof-of-stake security Users delegate TIA to validators that participate in Celestia consensus. Delegation supports network security but does not remove staking risks such as validator performance or slashing rules.
Governance TIA holders vote on a subset of network parameters. The community pool receives 2% of block rewards.

TIA therefore has several distinct roles. Paying a blob fee consumes the token for a network service; delegating it exposes a holder to staking mechanics; governance power depends on the voting system and delegated stake. These roles should not be treated as interchangeable with ownership of a rollup’s application token.

Is Celestia a layer-1, a data-availability layer, or both?

Celestia is a layer-1 blockchain in the sense that it has its own consensus, validators, native token and blocks. It is also a specialized data-availability layer because its principal service to higher layers is ordering and publishing their data.

Calling it a “layer-1” does not mean Celestia executes every application. The more precise description is a layer-1 DA chain in a modular stack. A rollup built above it supplies execution and usually connects to a separate settlement environment. When comparing Celestia with another DA design, examine which layer performs each function rather than relying on the layer number alone.

Availability is not permanent historical storage

Celestia’s guarantee concerns publication and retrievability during the availability period. Once data is published, a DA layer does not inherently promise that every historical blob will remain stored forever.

The seven-day light-node window

In celestia-node v6, light nodes sample a seven-day window by default. Data older than that window can be pruned from light nodes. This default is a node-software behavior, not a promise that the chain’s history disappears after seven days; archival nodes and other operators may retain older data.

What rollups must plan

A rollup needs its own historical-data strategy for audits, state reconstruction, new-node synchronization and dispute procedures. Options include operating archival infrastructure, maintaining snapshots, or using peer-to-peer historical synchronization. Professional archival services can be useful, but a publicly reachable endpoint should be treated as a convenience rather than a permanent backup. Public free archival access is not guaranteed.

TIA supply, allocation and inflation

Celestia’s documentation lists a genesis supply of 1,000,000,000 TIA. The genesis allocation is divided as follows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category Genesis allocation
Public allocation 20.00%
R&D and ecosystem 26.79%
Series A and B backers 19.67%
Seed backers 15.90%
Initial core contributors 17.64%

The same documentation records approximately 5.0% inflation after the v4 Lotus upgrade in July 2025 and approximately 2.5% after v6 in November 2025, with a path toward a 1.5% floor. These are protocol-schedule figures, not a live market forecast. The official pages reviewed do not provide a current TIA price or circulating-supply figure, so those values should be checked separately before making a financial decision.

Consensus and validator security

Celestia uses proof of stake and is built with CometBFT and the Cosmos SDK. Validators participate in block production and consensus, while delegators assign TIA to validators without running validator infrastructure themselves.

Delegation can make participation accessible, but it introduces operational dependencies. A delegator should review a validator’s uptime, commission, governance practices and any applicable slashing conditions. The protocol’s DA function also depends on enough nodes serving shares so that light-node requests can be answered and blocks can be reconstructed.

How to evaluate Celestia against another DA design

Use the same questions for every design rather than comparing marketing labels:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Function separation: Which system executes transactions, settles results, reaches consensus and provides DA?
  • Verification cost: Must a light client download all data, sample shares, or verify only cryptographic commitments?
  • Retrieval scope: Can an application request and prove only its own namespace?
  • Retention model: Who stores data after the normal availability window, and how can a new node obtain it?
  • Economic and security model: What token pays fees, how are validators or operators incentivized, and what governance powers do token holders have?

This framework exposes an important trade-off: lower per-node verification work can improve scalability, but it makes sampling assumptions, node diversity and historical retention planning more important.

Practical guidance for rollup teams

  • Estimate blobspace fees in TIA separately from execution and settlement costs.
  • Run or contract enough infrastructure to submit blobs, monitor inclusion and retrieve the rollup namespace.
  • Test NMT proof verification and recovery procedures before relying on production data.
  • Maintain an explicit archive policy covering data older than the seven-day light-node default.
  • Keep independent snapshots or archival copies; do not make a single public endpoint your only historical source.
  • Decide whether TIA should be the rollup’s gas currency or whether a separate application token is needed for economic or governance reasons.

Practical guidance for TIA holders

Self-custody options listed on Celestia’s official TIA page include Ledger, Keplr and Cosmostation. Before transferring funds, verify that the specific device or wallet version supports the current Celestia network, address format and software release. Confirm the destination network and perform a small test transfer when appropriate.

Delegating TIA can contribute to proof-of-stake security and may expose the holder to staking rewards, but the result depends on protocol rules, validator behavior and applicable lockup or unbonding periods. Review those conditions in the current wallet and network documentation rather than assuming every staking interface works the same way.

Key points to remember

  • Celestia orders and publishes rollup data; it does not normally execute the rollup’s transactions.
  • DAS uses erasure-coded shares and random Merkle-proof sampling so light nodes can check availability without downloading full blocks.
  • NMTs let applications retrieve and prove the completeness of their own namespace.
  • TIA pays for blobs, can be used as a rollup gas token, secures the chain through delegation and participates in governance.
  • Availability is time-bounded retrieval assurance, not an automatic promise of permanent historical storage.
