It is not a core Windows executable. A copy in C:Program FilesWidcommBluetooth Software with a valid Broadcom or manufacturer signature is consistent with legitimate software; a copy in a Windows, user-profile, temporary, or download folder needs further investigation.
Errors usually come from a damaged or incompatible Bluetooth package, a mismatched driver, a failing Bluetooth radio, or a pairing policy change—not necessarily from the executable itself. Preserve the file path, verify its signature, scan it, then repair or replace the Bluetooth software before considering hardware replacement.

What btstackserver.exe does
ReviverSoft identifies btstackserver.exe as the executable for “Bluetooth Stack COM Server,” associated with Widcomm Bluetooth Software and Broadcom Corporation. The documented legacy location is C:Program FilesWidcommBluetooth Softwarebtstackserver.exe. That path describes an expected installation location for an older vendor package; it is not proof that every file with that name is safe.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The program belongs to the vendor Bluetooth layer that sits around Windows. Microsoft’s native Bluetooth architecture uses components including BthServ, BthProps, BthPort and profile drivers. In other words, btstackserver.exe is not the Windows Bluetooth service itself and is not a required Windows filename on every PC. A computer using Microsoft’s native stack, a newer vendor package, or no Bluetooth hardware may not have it at all.

Broadcom’s 2007 BTW6.X Audio Switch Function white paper also shows BTStackServer.exe as part of Broadcom Bluetooth software. It identifies Broadcom Corporation as the publisher in a Skype access dialog and explains that, during a Skype call, BTW automatically switches Skype sound devices from Windows defaults to Bluetooth hands-free devices. That documentation describes an older Bluetooth software generation, so it should not be treated as a current support statement for every release.
Is btstackserver.exe safe or a virus?
There is no universal safe-or-malicious verdict based on the filename alone. Use the file’s location, signature, behavior and scan results together.
Signs that fit a legitimate installation
- The file is at
C:Program FilesWidcommBluetooth Softwarebtstackserver.exe, or in a closely matching Bluetooth Software directory installed by the computer or adapter maker. - In the file’s Properties window, the Digital Signatures tab shows Broadcom Corporation or the manufacturer that supplied the Bluetooth package.
- The package appears in Windows’ installed-app list or is associated with a Bluetooth device shown in Device Manager.
- An up-to-date Microsoft Defender or other reputable antivirus scan reports no threat.
Signs that require investigation
- The executable is in
C:Windows, a user profile,%TEMP%, an unrelated download folder, or another location unrelated to Bluetooth software. - The file has no digital signature, an invalid signature, or a signer that does not match the Bluetooth package installed on the PC.
- It appeared after downloading a “DLL fix,” driver bundle, cracked program, or other untrusted software.
- Its name differs subtly from the expected filename, or several copies launch from unrelated locations.
Do not confuse btstackserver.exe with BTStack.exe. BleepingComputer documents a separate startup entry named BTStack.exe as associated with the W32/Sdbot-DGV worm and IRC backdoor. That record concerns a different filename and path; it does not prove that a correctly located Widcomm btstackserver.exe is malicious.

No authoritative universal hash, current Broadcom support statement, or blanket safety verdict is available for every version. The defensible conclusion is conditional: a correctly signed file in the expected vendor directory is consistent with legitimate Widcomm/Broadcom software, while an unsigned or oddly located copy should be scanned and verified before it is allowed to run.

Why btstackserver.exe errors happen
Damaged or incomplete Bluetooth software
Power loss, failed updates, disk errors, or partial uninstallations can leave the COM server missing or corrupt. Windows or another Bluetooth component may then report that btstackserver.exe cannot be found, has stopped working, or cannot start.
Old software on a newer Windows installation
Widcomm packages were designed for particular hardware and Windows generations. A legacy COM server can fail after a Windows upgrade or when its supporting profile drivers no longer match the installed Bluetooth radio.
Driver and service mismatch
Microsoft’s Bluetooth stack loads profile drivers through Plug and Play. If the radio driver, profile driver, and vendor package are from different releases, the executable may be intact while the Bluetooth function it expects is unavailable. A disabled Bluetooth service or a device that Windows cannot enumerate can produce similar symptoms.
Pairing blocked by a security update
Microsoft states that security updates released on June 11, 2019 and later intentionally blocked insecure Bluetooth connections. A headset, keyboard, or other device can therefore stop pairing after an update even when btstackserver.exe has not changed. In this situation, replacing the executable will not solve the policy failure.

Failing or absent hardware
The internal radio may be disabled, physically failing, or missing from a desktop PC. A vendor COM server cannot provide Bluetooth when Windows cannot see a functioning radio.
What to record before changing anything
- Capture the exact message. Write down whether Windows reports “not found,” “has stopped working,” an application fault, a missing entry point, or simply a pairing failure. The distinction determines whether you are repairing software or troubleshooting a security policy or radio.
- Find the running file. If the message names a process, open Task Manager, locate the process, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, search for
btstackserver.exeand note every copy. Do not delete a copy before preserving its path and properties. - Record Windows and hardware details. Note the Windows edition and version, the PC or motherboard maker, the Bluetooth adapter model, and whether the problem began after a Windows, driver, or firmware update.
- Check whether Bluetooth itself is visible. In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices. In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth and check for warning icons, an unknown device, or a missing radio.
Repair choices at a glance
| Option | Best fit | Support and compatibility | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep and repair the existing Widcomm/Broadcom package | The file is correctly located and signed, and the hardware is the original device | Preserves the legacy vendor features, but support depends on the old package and its Windows compatibility | Old components may continue to fail after Windows upgrades or security changes |
| Replace it with the computer or adapter maker’s current Bluetooth package | The file is missing or corrupt, drivers are mismatched, or the manufacturer supplies a newer package | Usually the strongest software repair because the package is matched to the exact PC or adapter | Vendor-specific features may change, and an old device may no longer have a current package |
| Add a USB Bluetooth adapter | The internal radio is absent, disabled by hardware failure, or unsupported | Works as a separate radio when Windows has a compatible driver | Adds hardware and another driver; it does not remove malware or repair a damaged Windows installation |
Manual fix sequence for btstackserver.exe errors
1. Verify the file before repairing or removing it
- Right-click the executable, choose Properties, and read the Location field.
- Open the Details tab and record the product and company names.
- Open Digital Signatures, select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. Broadcom Corporation or the computer maker that supplied the Bluetooth package is the expected type of signer.
- If the path or signer is wrong, do not replace the file with one downloaded from a DLL or EXE “fix” site. Isolate the machine from untrusted downloads and continue with the scan step.
2. Scan the file and the system
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and run a full scan with current protection updates. If another reputable, updated antivirus product is your normal protection, use its full-scan function instead. Quarantine a detected file only after the scanner identifies it; do not manually delete a signed vendor file simply because an error mentions it.
When a suspicious copy is found outside the expected Bluetooth directory, keep the detection name, path, and date. Those details are useful if the machine needs professional malware cleanup or if a false positive must be reported to the security vendor.
3. Repair or remove the old vendor package
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. On older editions, use Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Look for Widcomm Bluetooth Software, Broadcom Bluetooth software, or a Bluetooth package supplied by the PC or adapter maker.
- If the entry offers Repair or Modify, try that first. Restart Windows and test Bluetooth.
- If repair is unavailable or the package is clearly damaged, uninstall it, restart, and install the current Bluetooth package provided for the exact computer, motherboard, or adapter model. Use the manufacturer’s support page or recovery media, not a third-party executable archive.
- Install the package with administrator approval, restart again, and verify that the Bluetooth radio and required devices reappear.
Do not copy a replacement btstackserver.exe into the old directory by hand. The COM server depends on registration, supporting libraries, services, and profile drivers that a single copied file cannot restore.

Such as Bluetooth speakers, keyboards, headsets, mice, and Bluetooth printers, etc. Only supports Windows 11/10/8.1, Not compatible with Mac OS, Linux, car stereo systems,XBOX,ps4 or TVs.
4. Check Bluetooth devices, drivers and services
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it.
- Expand Bluetooth. Right-click the radio and choose Properties to inspect the device status and driver date. Also check Other devices for an unknown Bluetooth device.
- If the manufacturer provides a current package, install it using the vendor installer. If the device is listed with an error, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and let Plug and Play detect it again before installing the matched package.
- Open services.msc and check the Bluetooth Support Service. It should not be disabled. Start it or set it to start on demand or automatically according to the vendor’s installation, then restart Windows.
- In Settings > Bluetooth & devices, turn Bluetooth off and on, remove the affected accessory, and pair it again. Keep the accessory close, charged, and in pairing mode.
These steps address a mismatched driver or stopped service. They will not overcome a physically failed radio or a device that is rejected because it uses insecure Bluetooth authentication.
5. Diagnose pairing failures after the June 2019 security change
If the executable starts normally but pairing broke after a Windows update, inspect the event log instead of repeatedly reinstalling the file.
- Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.msc, and open Windows Logs > System. - Choose Filter Current Log and look for sources such as
BTHUSBorBTHMINI, especially Event ID 22. - Note the device name, timestamp, and wording of the rejection. Microsoft identifies insecure Bluetooth connections as a reason affected devices may stop pairing after security updates released June 11, 2019 and later.
- Contact the Bluetooth device manufacturer for updated firmware or drivers. Microsoft’s guidance specifically directs users with post-update pairing problems to seek a device update from the manufacturer.
Rolling back security updates is not a general fix: it removes protections and may be unsuitable for a managed or business PC. Resolve the incompatibility through updated device firmware, a supported driver, or replacement hardware.
6. Test whether the failure is application-specific
If Bluetooth works in Windows but one older program reports a btstackserver.exe crash, check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the faulting application and module. Record the time and module name, update or reinstall that application, and test with another Bluetooth program. A single application crash does not establish that the Bluetooth executable is infected or that Windows’ entire Bluetooth stack is broken.

7. Use a USB adapter when the internal radio is unavailable
Microsoft says a PC without built-in Bluetooth can use a USB Bluetooth adapter. This is appropriate when Device Manager never shows an internal radio, the radio has failed, or the computer maker no longer supplies a compatible driver.
- Choose an adapter that explicitly supports your Windows version and the Bluetooth profiles your devices require.
- Shut down or disable the failed internal radio if the manufacturer instructs you to do so.
- Plug the adapter directly into the PC, install its current driver if Windows does not provide one, and restart.
- Confirm that one working Bluetooth radio appears in Device Manager, then pair accessories again through Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
An adapter is a hardware workaround. It cannot clean a malicious file, repair a damaged Windows installation, or make an insecure accessory pass Microsoft’s Bluetooth security policy.
8. Escalate when the evidence points beyond btstackserver.exe
- Use the PC maker’s recovery or support process if several system components fail, Windows reports disk errors, or the Bluetooth package cannot install.
- Seek malware-removal help when an unsigned copy launches from a temporary or user directory, multiple unrelated detections appear, or security tools are disabled.
- Replace the adapter or radio when it disappears from Device Manager on multiple clean driver installations and another USB port or computer confirms the hardware failure.

Frequently asked questions
Can I disable btstackserver.exe at startup?
Disabling a vendor Bluetooth component may stop Bluetooth audio, input devices, or profile features from working. First identify whether the PC uses Widcomm software and whether Windows’ native stack is available. Repair or replace the package rather than disabling an unknown startup entry as a safety measure.
Does deleting btstackserver.exe fix the crash?
No. Deleting it can leave the Bluetooth package incomplete and make recovery harder. Verify and scan the file, then uninstall or repair the complete vendor package through Windows.
Why does Bluetooth work but the error still appear?
A leftover startup registration, an older application, or a second copy in another directory can generate an error even while Windows’ native Bluetooth stack works. Use Task Manager, file properties, and Event Viewer to identify which copy or application is actually failing.
Is a USB adapter always better than repairing Widcomm software?
No. Repairing or replacing the matched vendor package is preferable when the internal radio is healthy and supported. An adapter makes sense when the internal radio is absent, defective, or no longer supported.
