The 3.1 MB figure is a catalog observation from AddRemovePrograms.com in 2026, not a size requirement for every Brother release. Different printer models, architectures and package revisions can contain different builds. No primary Brother document identified here describes the executable’s exact job, supported Windows versions or a canonical hash. It is therefore more accurate to call it a Brother-associated component than to claim that every file with this name is identical.

On a normal installation, the executable may be used by Brother printer or scanner software when Windows starts a print, scan or device-management task. It can also appear in a startup entry or a Brother service dependency. The presence of the file is not, by itself, evidence of a problem.

Is brsclink.exe safe?
Safety depends on the specific file, not its spelling. Malware can copy a legitimate-looking name, while a legitimate file can generate an error after an incomplete update. Use all of the following signals together:

To inspect the file, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, right-click a BrScLink.exe process if one is running, and choose Open file location. In File Explorer, right-click the executable, choose Properties, and review General, Details and Digital Signatures. Record the complete path and publisher before changing or deleting anything.
A SmartScreen warning is not a malware verdict on its own. Microsoft’s SmartScreen guidance explains that reputation warnings can occur for files without an established reputation and advises obtaining software from reputable sources. Treat an unsigned or unexpected copy cautiously, but do not infer infection solely from a warning.

First response when Windows reports an error
Do not download BrScLink.exe from an EXE or DLL mirror. Standalone copies can be modified, mismatched with your Brother package or bundled with unwanted software. Preserve the error text and identify the file before attempting a repair.
- Take a screenshot or write down the exact message, including whether it says the file is missing, cannot start, is corrupt, or is blocked.
- Note when the message appears: at sign-in, when printing, while scanning, after waking from sleep, or only when a particular application opens.
- Record recent changes such as a Brother update, Windows update, driver installation, security-policy change or system restore.
- Check whether the printer and scanner still work. A startup notification with fully working printing points to a stale startup entry; a failure during a print job points more strongly to a damaged package, service or driver.
Manual fix workflow
Follow these steps in order. Stop when the error is resolved, but keep the path, signature and scan results if you need to contact Brother support.
1. Identify the file and its package
- Open Task Manager and use Open file location for the process, or search File Explorer for
BrScLink.exeon the system drive. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and capture the full path, file version, product name, publisher and signature status.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds). Search for Brother iPrint&Scan and any Brother printer package that matches the device.
- If Windows lists no Brother software and the file is in a user-writable or temporary folder, do not launch it. Continue with the security checks below.
2. Scan with Microsoft Defender
- Save your work, close unnecessary programs and open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan. A full scan can take considerable time on a large drive.
- If Defender identifies the executable, choose quarantine or removal as recommended by Windows Security, then restart and reassess the Brother installation. Do not restore a flagged copy merely to silence the startup message.
- If the computer shows signs of broader compromise—unexpected accounts, disabled security controls, repeated detections or unexplained network activity—disconnect it from networks while preserving evidence and use a clean device for account recovery.
For a persistent or serious suspicion, start Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment before normal startup components load. Microsoft also provides the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT), a monthly utility for removing specific prevalent malware. Microsoft states that MSRT does not replace full antimalware protection. The MSRT download page lists version 5.146, published October 13, 2026; obtain it through Microsoft’s official channel and verify that the release applies to your Windows edition.

3. Repair the Brother application
If the file is in a Brother directory, has a valid publisher signature and scans clean, repair the installed package before replacing individual files.

- Select Brother iPrint&Scan or the Brother printer package associated with the error.
- Use Advanced options if Windows offers a Repair button. Repair changes application files while attempting to retain settings.
- Restart Windows and test a small print or scan.
- If no repair option exists, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the Brother package and choose Repair when available.
Record custom scan destinations, presets and network-printer details first. Some repair operations reset these settings.
4. Reinstall from Brother’s official support channel
Use this step when repair fails, the executable is missing or package files are mismatched. Identify the exact printer or multifunction model and your Windows edition before downloading anything.

- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the model’s installation instructions require disconnection. Leave a network printer connected to the same network unless Brother’s instructions say otherwise.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, remove Brother iPrint&Scan and the related Brother printer software. If Windows offers to remove device software or drivers, accept only components belonging to that Brother device.
- Restart Windows. This clears services and file locks left by the old package.
- Download the current package for the exact model and Windows version from Brother’s official support site. Avoid third-party driver repositories and EXE mirrors.
- Run the installer with an administrator account, follow its connection instructions and reconnect the USB cable only when prompted.
- Print a test page and perform a scan. Recheck the new
BrScLink.exepath and signature if the original warning concerned legitimacy.
5. Check startup entries and services
A message that appears at sign-in can come from a stale startup reference even when printing works. Open Task Manager > Startup apps and look for a Brother entry. Disable only the entry that clearly points to the broken installation; do not disable random Windows components. Restart and test the printer.
For a deeper check, press Win+R, enter eventvwr.msc, and inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System at the time of the error. Events can reveal the failing module, service name, access-denied condition or side-by-side configuration problem. Copy the event’s source, event ID and timestamp before searching for a fix.

6. Use a clean boot to isolate conflicts
Third-party security tools, update agents and printer utilities can prevent a Brother component from starting. Microsoft’s startup troubleshooting approach uses a clean boot to separate these conflicts.
- Press
Win+R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Do not disable Microsoft services when the box is not selected.
- Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and test the Brother operation that previously failed.
- If the error disappears, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between groups, until the conflict is identified. Restore normal startup after testing.
A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent performance setting. Keep security software enabled whenever possible and re-enable required services after identifying the conflicting item.
7. Investigate driver and security-policy blocks
If the message says a driver cannot load, the problem may involve a Brother printer driver rather than the executable itself. Microsoft’s driver guidance notes that incompatible third-party drivers can cause serious errors.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and review driver updates relevant to the printer, when offered.
- In Device Manager, expand Printers, Print queues and Imaging devices. Right-click the Brother device and inspect Properties > Driver for provider, date and status.
- Use View > Show hidden devices only as a diagnostic aid; remove an old Brother device only when you are sure it is no longer used.
- Check Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation if Windows reports that a driver was blocked. Do not disable core-isolation protections as a first response. Contact Brother for an updated compatible driver instead.

Can you delete brsclink.exe?
Do not delete a file from a Brother program directory while the package is installed. Removing it manually can break printing or scanning, leave an incomplete uninstall record and make later repair harder. If you no longer use the Brother device, uninstall Brother iPrint&Scan and related packages through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and remove the unused printer from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.

If the file is an untrusted copy outside a Brother directory, quarantine it with Microsoft Defender rather than simply deleting it. Deletion does not explain how the file arrived or whether another component remains. After the scan, review startup entries, scheduled tasks and recently installed applications for related items.
When the problem is not brsclink.exe
Windows error dialogs often name the first component that failed, not the underlying cause. A Brother application can be healthy while a print spooler, permissions issue, USB controller, network connection or system file is responsible.

Practical precautions after the repair
- Keep Windows, Microsoft Defender and the Brother package updated through their official update channels.
- Create a restore point before major driver or printer-software changes when your Windows edition supports it.
- Keep a note of the printer model, connection type and custom scan destinations so a reinstall does not become guesswork.
- Do not approve an executable solely because its filename resembles a known Windows or vendor file.
- Retain the original error text and Event Viewer details if the issue returns; repeated failures after a clean reinstall point toward a driver, hardware or Windows problem.
