What browsercleaner.exe is—and is not
Windows does not require a file named browsercleaner.exe as part of its normal system components. No researched Microsoft or security-vendor source identifies that filename as a standard Windows file. A name that sounds useful, such as “browser cleaner,” can be chosen by a legitimate utility, an installer, adware or malware. Windows does not decide trust from the filename.

Microsoft describes unwanted software as programs that “alter the Windows experience without your consent or control.” Its examples include unauthorized browser changes, redirects, unsolicited windows, bundled installations, exaggerated system-health warnings and removal prompts designed to confuse you. Those behaviors make a browsercleaner.exe instance suspicious even when a scan has not yet assigned it a malware name.
When should you consider it suspicious?
Use the following signals together rather than treating any one of them as conclusive:
- The file is in a user profile,
Temp,Downloadsor a strangely named directory instead of a clearly identified vendor folder. - Its Properties dialog has no publisher, an invalid signature or a signer you cannot connect to software you installed.
- It appeared immediately after a freeware installation, a browser extension, a fake update prompt or another download you did not fully recognize.
- Your home page, search engine, new-tab page or notification permissions changed without your approval.
- Browsers open redirects, pop-ups or unsolicited tabs, or Windows displays repeated “cleanup,” “infection” or system-health warnings.
- The process returns after you close it, creates unfamiliar startup entries or is protected from normal removal.
- Microsoft Defender or another reputable scanner identifies the file, its parent application or related browser components as unwanted or malicious.
A legitimate application can also crash, run from a user folder or lack a signature, so these are risk indicators, not a verdict. Conversely, a valid signature does not prove that the program is safe: a signed application can be unwanted, compromised or simply unrelated to the file you intended to install.

Capture evidence before changing anything
Collecting the details first helps you identify the parent program, avoid deleting a needed file and give support staff something useful to analyze. Do not execute browsercleaner.exe while investigating.
- Record the complete path. In Task Manager, right-click the process, choose Open file location, and copy the full path. If an alert names a path, record that path as well. A file under a vendor’s signed
Program Filesdirectory is materially different from one under a profile or temporary folder, but location by itself is not proof. - Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and note the publisher, product name, file version, creation date and size. Open Digital Signatures; record the signer and whether Windows reports the signature as valid. An absent or invalid signature is a warning signal, while a valid signature only establishes that the signed content came from that signer at signing time.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. Open PowerShell, type
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -Path, then paste the quoted path copied from Properties and press Enter. Keep the resulting hash with the path, signer and version in your incident notes. - Check installation history. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by install date and look for software added when browsercleaner.exe first appeared. Also inspect startup entries in Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager’s Startup apps tab. Do not remove an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar; identify the parent program first.
- Record security detections. Save the exact detection name, affected path and action taken by Windows Security or another scanner. If you submit an unknown file to Microsoft for analysis, do not upload confidential documents or private data to a public scanning service.
| Evidence | What it can tell you | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Full file path | Whether the file sits in a vendor directory, a user profile, temporary storage or a download location | That the file is safe or malicious by itself |
| Publisher and digital signature | Who signed the file and whether Windows can validate the signature | That the program’s behavior is desirable or uncompromised |
| SHA-256 hash | A reproducible identifier for the exact file you examined | That a matching file is safe without a trusted analysis |
| Install and startup records | Which application or event may have introduced the file and whether it starts with Windows | That an unfamiliar application is unwanted until you identify it |
| Defender or second-opinion detection | How a security engine classifies the file or related components | A filename-specific malware prevalence rate; no trustworthy rate has been established |
Manual removal and repair procedure
1. Do not launch the file
Do not double-click browsercleaner.exe, run it from a command prompt or approve an elevation prompt simply to inspect it. If it is active, save the path and other evidence first, then open Task Manager, select the process and choose End task. Ending a process does not remove its files or startup entries; it only stops the current instance.

If you see signs of active compromise—credential prompts you did not initiate, suspicious network activity, browser sessions changing on their own or a security alert naming a trojan—disconnect the affected computer from sensitive accounts and networks while you investigate. Use a different, trusted device to change important passwords if an account may have been exposed.
2. Update Windows and Defender intelligence
Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates and restart if Windows requests it. Then open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates. Microsoft’s guidance is to download software only from official websites or the Microsoft Store and to keep Microsoft Defender Antivirus enabled on Windows 10 and 11.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Run a Full scan
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan, then Scan now.
- Allow the scan to finish. In Protection history, review each result and choose Quarantine for detections you confirm are unwanted or malicious.
- Restart when Windows prompts you, then run another scan if the detection returns.
A clean scan does not establish that an unknown file is legitimate. It means that this scan did not identify the file or related items with the available intelligence. Keep the path, hash and signature records so you can investigate a changed or recurring copy.
4. Uninstall the application that introduced it
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and review programs installed around the date recorded in your evidence. Remove only software you can identify as unwanted. Use Windows’ Uninstall command or the publisher’s own uninstaller; do not delete random program folders first, because that can leave startup entries and broken uninstall records behind.
If you recognize the parent application and still need it, check its official vendor documentation for an update or clean reinstall. Do not download a replacement browsercleaner.exe from a DLL or “EXE fixer” site. If the program’s identity remains unclear, quarantine the suspicious file and seek support rather than guessing.

5. Clean browser changes
In every affected browser, remove extensions you did not install or cannot identify. Reset an unauthorized home page, search engine or new-tab setting to a known choice. Review Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications and revoke permissions for unfamiliar sites. Clear unwanted site data when appropriate.
Do not restore all extensions immediately after a reset. Leave unfamiliar add-ons disabled while scans run, then re-enable known extensions one at a time. If redirects or pop-ups return after a particular extension is enabled, remove it and record its name for your security notes.
6. Use a second-opinion adware and hijacker scan when symptoms continue
If Defender is clean but redirects, pop-ups, unwanted search changes or potentially unwanted-program detections persist, download Malwarebytes AdwCleaner from the official Malwarebytes website. Malwarebytes describes AdwCleaner as targeting adware, potentially unwanted programs and browser hijackers. Run its on-demand scan, review the paths and reasons shown for each result, quarantine items you recognize as unwanted and restart if requested.
Use the official download source, not a download portal offering a “patched” or “portable” executable. Keep Defender enabled while using a second-opinion scanner, and avoid running several real-time antivirus products simultaneously.
7. Repair Windows files only if quarantine caused a startup error
If Windows begins reporting that a system file is missing or an application will not start after a legitimate component was quarantined, repair Windows from an elevated Command Prompt:

- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. - Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to complete. - Run
sfc /scannowand allow System File Checker to finish. - Restart Windows and test the affected application.
These commands repair Windows component and system-file problems; they do not make an unknown browsercleaner.exe safe. If a legitimate application still needs a file, restore or reinstall that parent application from its official vendor after the system is clean.
8. Check whether the problem is gone
After restarting, verify that the suspicious process is absent, the file has not re-created itself, browser settings remain unchanged and no new startup entry appears. Run a follow-up Defender scan and, where symptoms warranted it, a follow-up AdwCleaner scan. A recurring copy, a file that resists deletion or a detection associated with credential theft, a trojan or a rootkit requires escalation rather than repeated manual deletion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to fix common browsercleaner.exe error scenarios
“browsercleaner.exe has stopped working” or repeated crashes
A crash message does not identify the file as safe. First capture the path, signer and hash, then scan the file and inspect the application installed on the same date. If the parent program is unwanted, uninstall it and remove its extension and startup entry. If the parent program is known and trusted, install its current version from the official vendor instead of downloading a standalone replacement executable.
“browsercleaner.exe cannot be found” at startup
This usually means a startup entry still points to a file that was removed or quarantined. Review Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager’s Startup apps tab. Disable or remove the entry only after you identify its parent program. If the entry belongs to unwanted software, uninstall that software; if it belongs to a legitimate application, repair or reinstall the application from its official source.
Browser redirects continue after deletion
Deleting one executable does not undo an extension, notification permission, proxy setting or scheduled component. Remove unfamiliar extensions, reset unauthorized search and home-page settings, review notification permissions, uninstall the associated application and run Defender plus AdwCleaner. If the redirects persist, stop signing in to sensitive accounts on that computer and escalate for a deeper incident review.
Best Value
“Access denied” or the file returns after removal
Do not take ownership or edit the registry blindly. Save the path and detection information, end the process only after evidence collection, reboot and rescan. A persistent or protected file can indicate an active component that needs specialist handling, especially when a trojan or rootkit is reported. Microsoft support or a qualified incident responder can help preserve evidence and remove it safely.
Can you delete browsercleaner.exe?
Yes, but only after you establish what installed it and complete the security checks. If a reputable, identified application owns the file, deleting the executable alone may break that application and leave its uninstaller, services or browser extension behind. Use the application’s uninstaller or an official repair process instead.
If the file is unidentified, detected as unwanted and located in a temporary or download directory, quarantine it through Windows Security or AdwCleaner rather than manually deleting it first. Keep the hash and path until you are sure the incident is resolved. Never download another copy from a random executable repository to silence an error message.
Defender and AdwCleaner: choosing the manual scan
| Option | Primary role | When it fits this problem | Important control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows Security | Baseline antivirus and Windows security protection | Always start here for an unknown executable, especially after updating security intelligence | Use Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan and review Protection history |
| Malwarebytes AdwCleaner | On-demand detection of adware, potentially unwanted programs and browser hijackers | Use when redirects, pop-ups, unwanted browser changes or PUP detections continue after Defender’s scan | Download from the official Malwarebytes website, review each result and quarantine confirmed unwanted items |
These tools address different detection emphases; neither turns the filename itself into proof of a verdict. Judge the result by the exact path, detection reason and behavior you recorded.
What not to do
- Do not trust browsercleaner.exe solely because its name sounds like a maintenance utility.
- Do not pay a pop-up that claims your computer is infected or demands an urgent cleanup.
- Do not use random registry cleaners or one-click “EXE repair” downloads.
- Do not upload confidential files to public scanners.
- Do not disable Microsoft Defender merely because another scanner is running.
- Do not delete registry entries, scheduled tasks or protected files without identifying the software that created them.
Microsoft’s unwanted-software warnings—unauthorized changes, bundled installations, exaggerated health claims and difficult removal—are useful reasons to stop and investigate rather than follow a pop-up’s instructions.
When to escalate
Contact Microsoft support or a qualified incident responder when the file survives quarantine, recreates itself, is protected from deletion, is tied to credential theft, or is detected as a trojan or rootkit. Escalate sooner if the computer is used for banking, administration or other sensitive work and you cannot establish what the file is. Preserve the path, signer, version, hash, detection names and installation dates; those records are more useful than repeatedly deleting the visible executable.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, temporary and cache cleanup, vulnerability checks and app-crash logging. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
Bottom line
There is no established Microsoft identity for browsercleaner.exe, so neither “safe” nor “virus” can be concluded from the filename. Treat the instance as unknown: do not run it, record its provenance, scan with updated Defender, remove the unwanted parent application and browser changes, use AdwCleaner when hijacking symptoms remain, and escalate persistent or high-risk detections.
