brotherhelp.exe is the executable for Brother Help, an optional support utility installed with some Brother printer software. It starts with Windows and provides shortcuts to Brother’s online support resources. What does brotherhelp.exe do?
Brother Help is a convenience component bundled with selected Brother printer and multifunction-device software. Its purpose is to put links to the Brother Solutions Center and related support information within easy reach. It is not the printer driver, Windows Print Spooler, or a required Windows system process.
Brother’s FAQ describes Brother Help as a program that runs at computer startup and says there is “no issue even if you are not running on Brother Help.” In practical terms, the printer can continue to work when the support launcher is disabled, provided the actual printer, scanner, and device drivers remain installed.

The exact installation folder, file version, and whether the utility is included vary by printer model and by the Brother software package you installed. Consequently, there is no single universal file path, hash, or version number that identifies every legitimate copy.
Is brotherhelp.exe safe?
A legitimate copy is normally a Brother support component, but a filename can be copied by malware. Judge the particular file on the computer instead of trusting the name alone.
Check the running file’s location
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find BrotherHelp.exe in the list of running processes. If it is not visible, expand the Task Manager window or check the Startup apps list.
- Right-click the process and select Open file location.
- A location inside a Brother program directory under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86)is more consistent with a normal installation. A copy inDownloads, a user-writable temporary folder, or an unrelated system directory deserves further investigation.
Folder location is only an indication, not proof. Legitimate installers can use different directories, and malicious software can create a convincing folder name.
Verify the digital signature
- In File Explorer, right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details. Look for a valid signature from Brother Industries, Ltd. and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
Microsoft explains that a valid digital signature helps confirm the claimed publisher and indicates that the signed file has not been altered since it was signed. An absent, invalid, or unexpected signature does not by itself identify malware, but it is a reason to stop and investigate before allowing the process to run.
Scan an unexpected copy
If the path is unusual, the signature is missing or invalid, or the process produces suspicious behavior such as repeated security alerts, run a current Windows Security scan. In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender when that option is available, or open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options and select a suitable scan.

Do not replace a suspect file with an identically named executable from a “DLL” or “EXE” download site. Such a download may be modified, may not match your printer package, and can introduce a second problem while leaving the original installation inconsistent.
What a third-party hash can and cannot tell you
One third-party file catalog lists a Brother Help 1.0.3.0 example with SHA-1 hash 5f5064602ae6ab18bc54310c0e787fb094dc3dee and a C:Program FilesBrotherBrother Help directory. That is an example build, not a universal reference for every model or release. A different legitimate installer can have a different version, size, path, and hash, so do not reject a file solely because it does not match that example.

Brother confirmed a Windows 10 case in which Brother Help could prevent shutdown after a Windows update. The utility remains active in the notification area or as a startup process, and Windows may wait for it to close cleanly. This is a compatibility problem involving the support launcher; it does not mean that your printer driver is defective.
The documented remedy is to stop Brother Help from launching automatically and close the current instance before shutting down. Disabling the launcher removes its support shortcut, not the printer driver itself.
Fix the documented shutdown problem
- On the right side of the taskbar, click the Show hidden icons arrow to reveal notification-area icons.
- Right-click Brother Help and select Settings.
- Clear Run this program when startup (the wording used by Brother’s instructions), then select OK.
- Right-click Brother Help again and choose Close.
- Use Start → Power → Shut down to test the result.
If the computer now shuts down normally, the startup utility was the immediate trigger. You can still open Brother Utilities or the Brother support site manually whenever you need documentation or downloads.

If Brother Help starts again
Some Brother packages expose startup control in Windows as well as in the notification-area menu. Open Settings → Apps → Startup in Windows 11 or Windows 10 and turn off the Brother Help entry if it is present. On older Windows versions, open Task Manager, select the Startup tab, select the Brother Help item, and choose Disable. This controls automatic launch; it does not uninstall the component or remove the printer driver.
If the entry has a different name, use the Open file location check before disabling it so you do not accidentally turn off a required printer or scanner component.
Fix a missing, corrupt, or incompatible brotherhelp.exe error
1. Record the printer model and Windows edition
Find the exact model name from the printer’s label, its control panel, or the existing Brother Utilities installation. Also check your Windows release under Settings → System → About. Record whether the system is Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, or Windows 7, and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit when the installer asks.
2. Use Brother’s support page for that model
Download the complete software or utilities package from the official Brother support page for the exact model and operating system. Select the package that includes Brother Help if you need the support launcher; otherwise, install only the printer, scanner, or utilities components you actually use.
Brother’s Windows 11 guidance is model-specific. Some devices have original Windows 11 drivers, while software designed for Windows 10 may work on Windows 11 without being guaranteed or supported for every model. Do not assume that a package listed for one Brother printer applies to another, even when the model names look similar.

3. Remove a damaged package before reinstalling
- Close Brother applications and disconnect the printer if the installer requests it.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps in Windows 11 or Windows 10. On older systems, open Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the Brother Help or Brother software entry associated with the damaged installation. Keep the printer driver, scanner software, or status monitor that you still need unless the Brother installer specifically requires their removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the model-specific Brother installer you downloaded, following its connection instructions.
- Restart again if the installer requests it, then test printing, scanning, and (if desired) Brother Help.
Before uninstalling, record the model and connection method (USB, wired network, or Wi-Fi). That information makes it easier to restore the correct package if Windows removes an associated device entry.
4. Repair the installation without downloading a loose EXE
If the installer offers Repair, use it before removing the whole package. A repair can restore a missing support executable while preserving device settings. If no repair option exists, reinstall the complete official package instead of copying brotherhelp.exe from another computer. Files from another model, release, or language package can have incompatible dependencies and produce a different error.

The printer stopped working after removing Brother Help
Brother Help itself is not the print driver, but uninstallers can group several Brother components together. Reinstall the model-specific package and select the printer, scanner, and status-monitor features you require. Re-add the printer in Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners if Windows no longer lists it.
What not to do
- Do not assume every file named
