What brmd120.exe does and where it comes from
Windows executable names ending in .exe identify programs, not a particular vendor. In this case, package indexes associate BRMD120.EXE with Brother printer software. The Brother HL-3170CDW BR-Script3 package listing places it beside Brother components such as BRLM03A.DLL, BRLMW03A.DLL, BROSNMP.DLL and BRPEM120.EXE. A listing for the Brother MFC-9142CDN also contains BRMD120.EXE and model-data files.

Driver-package indexes also record compressed files named brmd120.ex_ in both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64) Brother bundles, including an MFC-J870DW package dated in the 2013–2015 period. A compressed .ex_ file is an installer-package representation; it is normally expanded during installation. These records show package association, not that every file carrying the name on every computer is genuine.

It is less plausible when it appears with no Brother software, in an unrelated application folder, or in a temporary, download, user-profile or startup location. Location is an investigative clue, not proof: malware can imitate a normal path and a legitimate installer can use a temporary extraction directory.

Is brmd120.exe a virus or otherwise unsafe?
The safest classification is potentially legitimate Brother driver component, untrusted until verified. Malwarebytes explains that an .exe is executable code and states, “It’s not safe to open any .exe file you encounter.” The same filename can be used by an impostor, so do not double-click an unexplained copy or approve an elevation prompt merely because the name looks familiar.
Use all of the following evidence together. One positive signal should not override several negative ones.

- Installer source: A file created by the official driver package for your exact printer model is more credible than one delivered by an unknown download or cracked-software installer.
- Full path: A Brother driver directory containing related Brother files is more plausible than a random
Temp,Downloads,AppDataor startup folder. - Digital signature: The Properties dialog should show a valid signature from the expected Brother entity. An absent, invalid or unexpected signer requires investigation.
- Package and architecture: Match the file to the exact model and to the 32-bit or 64-bit package. The documented bundles are separated into i386 and amd64 variants.
- Hash and security scans: A checksum can be compared with the exact vendor package when Brother publishes or supplies one. Scan the file and the complete computer with current security software.
- Companion files: The expected Brother DLLs and model data strengthen the package-origin explanation. Their presence does not guarantee that the executable has not been replaced.
How to verify a copy before running it
- Do not launch it. If a pop-up, email or installer asks you to run
brmd120.exe, cancel it until the file has been checked. - Record the path. In Task Manager, File Explorer or the alert from your security software, note the complete path, file size, creation date and the process that referenced it. Do not rely on a shortened display such as “brmd120.exe” without the directory.
- Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, then open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details and confirm that Windows reports it as valid and that the signer is the expected Brother entity. A signature is useful evidence, not a guarantee against every form of compromise.
- Match the package. Identify the printer model in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 10). Compare that model and your system type with the Brother driver package. To check the system type, open Settings > System > About and read System type.
- Calculate a checksum when possible. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathbrmd120.exe". Compare the result only with a hash for the identical Brother package and version; a hash from a different model, architecture or release is not a valid comparison. - Scan the file and the computer. Use your current security product’s custom scan on the file, then run a full-system scan. Malwarebytes recommends checking signatures and checksums along with anti-malware scanning.
- Decide from the combined evidence. A valid signature, expected path, matching package and clean scan support leaving the file in place. An unexpected path, invalid signature or detection should be treated as suspicious even if the printer currently works.
Why brmd120.exe errors can appear
No published brmd120.exe-specific prevalence or failure rate is established, so an error message does not identify one universal cause. In practice, the message usually points to one of these conditions:

- Wrong package: A driver for a different Brother model, Windows edition or processor architecture may not contain the expected component or may install incompatible companion files.
- Partial driver removal: Removing a printer while leaving an old package, or installing over a damaged package, can leave Windows referencing files that no longer exist.
- Security quarantine: A security product may have isolated the executable because it was altered, unsigned or otherwise suspicious. Restoring it without verifying the source is unsafe.
- Impostor file: A copy in an unrelated folder may be malware using a familiar name rather than a Brother component.
- Printer or spooler state: A stale queue or a malfunctioning print service can expose a driver problem even when the executable itself is intact.
Manual fixes, in the safest order
1. Preserve the error details
Write down the exact message, the application that displayed it, the full path and when it occurs: at startup, when printing, during installation or only when a particular document is sent. If the message names a different directory than the Brother package, treat that difference as important evidence. Do not download a replacement executable from an “DLL” or “EXE” archive site.

2. Isolate and scan a suspicious copy
If the file is unsigned, sits in an unexpected directory, or is flagged by security software, disconnect the computer from untrusted networks if practical and allow the security product to quarantine the file. Run a current full-system scan. Microsoft documents Microsoft Safety Scanner and the Malicious Software Removal Tool as additional remediation options; obtain them from Microsoft’s official channels and use current versions. Do not restore a quarantined file merely to make the error disappear.
When malware is confirmed, finish remediation before troubleshooting the printer. From a separate clean device, change important passwords and review startup entries and scheduled tasks for persistence. There is no published evidence that brmd120.exe itself has a particular persistence mechanism, so these are general incident-response precautions rather than a claim about this file.

3. Reinstall the exact Brother driver when the component is legitimate but missing
- Identify the precise printer model from the label or Windows printer list. Record whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open Brother’s official support site and select the exact model, operating-system edition and architecture. Download the current driver package offered for that combination.
- Close printing applications and disconnect the printer only if the Brother installer instructs you to do so.
- Run the downloaded installer, preferably after checking its own Properties and signature. Follow the connection choice for USB, wired network or Wi-Fi.
- Restart Windows when the installer requests it, then print a test page from the printer’s Windows properties.
- Recheck the installed
brmd120.exepath and signature. The repaired file should belong to the package you just installed, not to an unrelated directory.
Do not substitute a file copied from another computer. Even two Brother printers can require different model data, and the documented i386 and amd64 packages are not interchangeable.
4. Repair or remove a damaged package instead of deleting one file
If the printer still works and the executable is a signed component of the installed package, leave it alone. Manual deletion can break the driver and create additional missing-file errors. For a damaged installation, first try the package’s repair option if it provides one. Otherwise remove the complete Brother software through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), then reinstall the exact vendor package.

When an orphaned driver remains, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. Choose Print server properties from the toolbar or the window menu, open the Drivers tab, select the Brother package and choose Remove. Select the option to remove the driver and driver package when Windows offers it. Remove only the package you have positively identified; deleting a shared or currently used driver can affect other printers. Restart before reinstalling.
5. Clear a stuck queue and restart the print service
If the error occurs only when printing, pause or cancel documents in the printer queue and try a single test page. In Windows, open the printer’s queue from Settings > Printers & scanners, select the Brother printer, choose Open print queue, and cancel pending jobs. Restart Windows afterward. If jobs remain stuck, open Services, locate Print Spooler, choose Restart, and test again. This step addresses queue state; it does not validate an untrusted executable.
6. Check Windows and storage before repeating installation
Install pending Windows updates, restart, and ensure the system drive has free space for extraction and driver installation. If installers repeatedly fail or files become corrupted, check the drive for errors using Windows’ built-in drive properties and review Event Viewer for contemporaneous disk or service errors. Do not keep reinstalling over an unidentified executable: return to the signature and malware checks first.

Can you delete brmd120.exe?
Only remove it as part of the Brother driver package, not as an isolated file. Deleting a legitimate component can stop printing or cause Windows to request the missing file at every startup. If you no longer use the printer, uninstall its Brother software and remove its printer-driver package through Windows. If you still use it, repair or reinstall the package. If the copy is suspicious, quarantine it through security software and investigate rather than manually replacing it with a download.
