It commemorates an early commercial use of Bitcoin to buy goods—not Bitcoin’s first transaction overall.
What happened on Bitcoin Pizza Day?
On May 18, 2010, software developer Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the Bitcointalk forum offering 10,000 bitcoin to anyone who would order him two large pizzas. Four days later, another Bitcoin enthusiast arranged for Papa John’s pizzas to be delivered to Hanyecz’s home in Florida, completing the trade, according to The Associated Press.

Hanyecz described the kind of pizza he wanted in the original offer: “I like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc.. just standard stuff no weird fish topping or anything like that,” as reproduced by the AP.

The completed exchange is remembered each year on May 22 as Bitcoin Pizza Day. Guinness World Records describes it as the first commercial Bitcoin transaction, and notes that community members mark the anniversary by ordering pizza (Guinness World Records). The AP describes the observance as informal rather than an official holiday.

Was it Bitcoin’s first transaction?
No. The pizza purchase is significant as an early commercial transaction—a purchase of goods using Bitcoin—not as Bitcoin’s first transaction of any kind. Guinness calls it the first commercial Bitcoin transaction; the AP describes it as the first known use of cryptocurrency to buy real-world goods. Calling it simply Bitcoin’s “first transaction” would be misleading.

The AP estimated that 10,000 BTC was worth about $41 at the time of the 2010 purchase. That is a historical estimate, not a present-day valuation; any current dollar equivalent would depend on the date and Bitcoin’s market price.
