BIOSRenamer.exe is an ASUS utility included in some motherboard BIOS ZIP downloads. It renames the downloaded BIOS image to the exact .CAP filename required by that motherboard’s BIOS FlashBack feature. It is not a general Windows repair program. The safest copy is the one downloaded from the official ASUS support page for your exact motherboard model. If Windows blocks it, or FlashBack reports that the file is not a proper BIOS, verify the model, package, filename, archive extraction and USB setup before attempting another firmware update.

What BIOSRenamer.exe does

ASUS packages BIOSRenamer.exe with compatible motherboard BIOS downloads. After you extract the ZIP file, the utility identifies the BIOS image and changes its name to the model-specific filename expected by BIOS FlashBack. The resulting file normally has a .CAP extension.

The filename is not universal. ASUS assigns a different CAP name to different motherboard models, and sometimes to different board families. A filename copied from a forum post or from a similar-looking board can therefore make FlashBack reject an otherwise genuine BIOS image.

BIOSRenamer.exe does not install a Windows driver, repair corrupted system files or update the firmware by itself. It performs the narrow naming step; the actual firmware update is carried out by the motherboard’s BIOS FlashBack process or by another ASUS update method described in that model’s manual.

Is BIOSRenamer.exe safe?

Check where the file came from

Provenance is the most useful safety test. A copy that arrived inside the BIOS ZIP downloaded from the ASUS support page for your exact motherboard is the expected distribution path. Delete and replace a same-named file obtained from a third-party driver site, software mirror, email, chat message or forum attachment. Do not try to make an unknown executable safe by renaming it or placing it in an ASUS download folder.

Why Windows may display a warning

Microsoft SmartScreen uses signals such as the publisher and the file’s hash reputation. A new or uncommon executable can therefore display an “unrecognized app” warning even when it came from a legitimate download. The warning is a reason to verify the source, not a definitive malware verdict.

Smart App Control also checks cloud reputation and digital signatures. When it cannot make a confident prediction, it checks whether the application has a valid signature. It can block an unsigned or invalidly signed application, and Windows does not provide a per-app bypass for Smart App Control. If it blocks BIOSRenamer.exe, use the manual CAP-renaming method with the verified BIOS image rather than replacing the utility with an unknown copy.

Use a current security check

Before opening the utility, right-click the downloaded ZIP or extracted files and scan them with your installed Windows security software. You can also open the executable’s Properties dialog and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when one is present. A missing signature does not by itself prove that the file is malicious, but it makes source verification and a fresh download more important.

An older ASUS ROG community discussion reported antivirus detections in a historical BIOS package and questioned BIOSRenamer.exe. That user-generated report does not establish that every build is malicious or that every detection is a false positive. Treat it as a reason to verify the current package, signature information and scan result, not as proof about the file you have today.

Before you try to fix an error

  • Read the motherboard model printed on the board, its box or its manual. Similar model names are not interchangeable.
  • Open the ASUS support page for that exact model and download the current BIOS package intended for your board and region.
  • Keep the original ZIP until the update succeeds. Do not mix an image from one download with BIOSRenamer.exe from another.
  • Extract the complete ZIP to a normal local folder before running anything. Running from inside a compressed-folder preview can leave the image or utility unavailable.
  • Read the BIOS FlashBack section of the model manual, including the required CAP filename, USB port, filesystem and any capacity limits.
  • Have stable mains power. A firmware update interrupted by a power loss has a higher recovery risk than a normal failed Windows application.

Recommended method: run BIOSRenamer.exe

  1. Download the matching package. From the ASUS support page, select the exact motherboard model and download its BIOS ZIP. Do not select a BIOS for a board with a merely similar name.
  2. Extract the ZIP completely. In File Explorer, use Extract All and open the new folder. The BIOS image and BIOSRenamer.exe should be in that extracted package, not in unrelated folders.
  3. Run the renamer from that folder. Double-click BIOSRenamer.exe. It should identify the included image and change its name to the CAP filename required by the board. If Windows shows a reputation warning, stop and verify the download before deciding whether to continue.
  4. Confirm the output. Check that the renamed image has the expected .CAP extension and that its filename matches the name printed in the motherboard manual’s specifications or BIOS FlashBack instructions. Enable File Explorer’s file-name extensions if you need to distinguish BOARD.CAP from the accidental BOARD.CAP.CAP.
  5. Prepare the USB drive. Format or use a compatible USB drive according to the manual, copy only the required CAP file to it, and insert it into the designated BIOS FlashBack USB port. ASUS documentation warns that an incorrect port, filename, USB installation or file format can cause FlashBack to fail. Some boards recommend USB 2.0 media for compatibility. A USB 2.0 flash drive that can be formatted as FAT32 is a practical accessory, but verify your board’s required capacity, filesystem and port before buying or formatting one.
  6. Start FlashBack exactly as documented. With the system in the power state specified by the manual, insert the prepared drive and press or hold the BIOS FlashBack button as instructed for your model. Do not substitute a different USB port because it is easier to reach.
  7. Leave the process alone. Do not unplug the drive, remove power, press reset or use clear-CMOS controls while the firmware update is running. Wait for the board’s documented completion indication before removing the USB drive or powering on normally.
  8. Boot and verify. Start the computer, enter UEFI setup if necessary and check that the BIOS version is the one you intended to install. Reapply any custom settings only after confirming that the update completed.

Manual alternative when the utility will not run

ASUS manuals permit manual renaming. This is useful when Windows blocks BIOSRenamer.exe, the utility closes immediately, or the package contains a valid image but the helper cannot identify it.

  1. Close the utility and return to the extracted folder from the verified ASUS ZIP.
  2. Find the BIOS image supplied for your exact motherboard. Do not rename a file downloaded for another model.
  3. Open the motherboard manual or the specifications summary in the ASUS support documentation and copy the exact BIOS CAP filename shown there, including every letter, number, hyphen and extension.
  4. Rename the image to that exact name. Change only the filename; do not convert the file, open it in an editor or append a second extension.
  5. Confirm the final name in File Explorer with file extensions visible, then copy the file to the correctly prepared FlashBack drive and continue with the model-specific procedure.

Manual naming is not a workaround for a wrong BIOS image. It only replaces the automatic naming step. If the board still reports that the file is not a proper BIOS, stop and recheck the model, download, CAP name, USB filesystem and port.

Fixes for common BIOSRenamer and FlashBack errors

“Windows protected your PC” or an unrecognized-app warning

Do not download a second copy from a random site to avoid the warning. Confirm that the ZIP came from the exact ASUS motherboard support page, scan the current archive, inspect available signature information and compare the extracted contents with the package you just downloaded. If the source is trustworthy but SmartScreen still warns, the file may simply have little reputation because it is uncommon. If Smart App Control blocks it, there is no supported per-app bypass; use the manual CAP rename route or obtain a newer, properly signed ASUS package.

BIOSRenamer.exe cannot find a BIOS file

This usually points to an incomplete extraction, a mismatched folder or a package that is not for the selected motherboard. Extract the ZIP again to a new folder and keep the image and utility together. Download the package again if the archive is damaged. Do not move an image from another model into the folder just to make the utility produce a filename.

The filename is rejected by FlashBack

Read the required name in your own manual rather than relying on a filename shown in a video or forum post. Check capitalization, punctuation and the extension. Make sure Windows has not hidden the extension and added another one. If you used the automatic method, compare its output with the manual’s specified CAP name; if they differ, follow the model documentation and manually rename the verified image.

FlashBack does nothing

  • Use the USB port explicitly labeled for BIOS FlashBack, not a regular rear or front USB port.
  • Recreate the drive using the filesystem and capacity requirements in the manual.
  • Try the USB media type recommended for the board; ASUS notes that some models are more compatible with USB 2.0 media.
  • Leave only the required CAP file on the drive and verify that it is in the root location expected by the manual.
  • Recheck that the image belongs to the exact motherboard model and that the filename is correct.

FlashBack says the file is not a proper BIOS

The message commonly follows a model mismatch, an incorrect CAP name, a damaged or incompletely extracted download, an unsupported USB format or use of the wrong port. Start over with a fresh ASUS package and follow the checks above. Do not keep retrying with a file whose model you cannot prove.

The update was interrupted

Do not repeatedly remove power or press reset in an attempt to force progress. ASUS warns that interruption can damage the BIOS and leave the computer unable to boot. Follow the recovery procedure for your exact board if one is documented. If those steps fail, contact ASUS service rather than improvising with another model’s BIOS image.

Windows shows a firmware device with a yellow exclamation mark afterward

ASUS provides Windows 10 and Windows 11 troubleshooting for a firmware device that reports a yellow warning icon or “firmware update was unsuccessful.” Use the model-specific ASUS instructions, restart only when they call for it, and contact ASUS if the warning remains after the documented steps. This Windows Device Manager symptom is separate from the filename-renaming step.

Automatic versus manual renaming

Consideration BIOSRenamer.exe Manual rename
Source authenticity Safe to evaluate when included in the verified ASUS package for the exact board. Uses the BIOS image directly from the verified ASUS package; no helper executable is required.
Correct model-specific filename Generates the name ASUS configured for the package. Requires copying the exact CAP name from your motherboard manual or specifications summary.
Windows security compatibility Can trigger SmartScreen or Smart App Control reputation and signature checks. Avoids running the helper, although the BIOS image and package should still be scanned and verified.
USB requirements Both methods still require the correct CAP file, USB filesystem, designated FlashBack port and any model-specific capacity or media requirements.
Recovery risk The principal risk occurs during firmware flashing. Interrupting power or using the wrong image can leave the board unable to boot; naming method does not remove that risk.

When to stop and get ASUS support

Stop the process if you cannot identify the motherboard model, the downloaded archive appears damaged, the required CAP name is unclear, or the board repeatedly rejects a verified package. After an interrupted update or a system that no longer boots, use only the recovery instructions written for that board. A BIOS image for a similar model is not a safe recovery attempt. Provide ASUS support with the exact board model, BIOS package version, the message shown by FlashBack and what happened immediately before the failure.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install only official drivers, show current and recommended versions, create driver backups and restores, and schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a two-day free trial without a credit card before subscription; results vary, and it does not replace the model-specific BIOS FlashBack procedure.

Final checklist

  • The executable came from the ASUS BIOS ZIP for the exact motherboard model.
  • The ZIP was fully extracted, and the BIOS image was not mixed with another package.
  • The CAP filename exactly matches the name in the board’s manual or specifications summary.
  • The USB drive uses the required filesystem and capacity and is connected to the designated FlashBack port.
  • You followed the board’s FlashBack sequence and did not interrupt power, remove the drive or press reset during the update.
  • Any Windows firmware warning was handled with ASUS’s Windows 10/11 model-specific guidance.

BIOSRenamer.exe is therefore best understood as a small ASUS naming helper. Verify its provenance, use the exact model-specific CAP filename and treat the USB firmware-flashing stage as the high-risk operation.
