bg3_dx11.exe is Baldur’s Gate 3’s DirectX 11 game executable for Windows. The legitimate copy normally sits in the game’s bin folder, such as SteamAppscommonBaldurs Gate 3bin for a Steam installation. It is not a Windows system file. A crash or launch failure usually relates to the selected renderer, damaged game files, graphics settings, stale cache or mods, drivers, Windows components, or a Visual C++ runtime problem.

What bg3_dx11.exe does
Baldur’s Gate 3 includes separate executables for its two graphics APIs. bg3_dx11.exe starts the DirectX 11 version of the game. The other commonly seen file, bg3.exe, starts the Vulkan version. Choosing one does not install a different game; it selects the rendering path used by that launch.

For Steam, the expected location is usually:

A GOG installation has an equivalent bin folder under the directory chosen during installation. Larian’s support material identifies this executable as part of the normal game installation and distinguishes it from the Vulkan executable.

If the file is in that installed game folder, its presence is expected. If a same-named file appears in a temporary directory, a download folder, an email attachment, or another unrelated location, do not assume it is the game executable. The path is a useful first check, not a cryptographic proof of authenticity.
Is bg3_dx11.exe safe?
The normal copy installed by Steam or GOG in Baldur’s Gate 3’s bin folder is consistent with the genuine game. That does not make every file with the same name safe. Malware can use a familiar filename, and a modified game file can be copied elsewhere.
Check the location before running it
- Right-click the game shortcut and choose Open file location, or open your launcher’s installation folder.

Steam’s Verify Integrity of Game Files and GOG Galaxy’s Manage Installation → Verify/Repair compare the installed files with the game’s distribution and replace files that are missing or altered. This is more reliable than replacing one executable manually. If verification reports altered files, note that result; it is useful when diagnosing a persistent failure and when contacting Larian Support.
A security scan can be an additional check for a copy found outside the game directory, but a clean scan alone does not prove that an unknown download is the official game file. Treat the verified launcher installation as the trusted source.

Why bg3_dx11.exe crashes or will not launch
Different symptoms can have the same visible result: the launcher closes, a black screen appears, Windows reports that the application stopped working, or the game crashes shortly after loading. The most common categories are:
- Renderer-specific problems: DirectX 11 may fail on a particular driver or configuration while Vulkan works, or the reverse.
- Damaged or incomplete files: an interrupted update, disk error, or altered file can prevent startup.
- Graphics settings: an invalid resolution, fullscreen mode, high refresh rate, or aggressive graphics setting can cause a launch or early-rendering crash.
- Stale configuration and cache: a damaged
graphicSettings.lsxfile or corrupted contents ofLevelCachecan keep the game from starting correctly. - Mods: obsolete files in the local profile or installation directory can conflict with a game update.
- Drivers and Windows components: outdated graphics drivers, pending Windows updates, or a damaged Visual C++ runtime can stop the executable.
- Interference: overlays, antivirus or firewall components, graphics-tuning utilities, monitoring tools, and chat overlays can affect launch or rendering.
Before changing files or settings
- Close Baldur’s Gate 3 and its launcher completely. Check Task Manager if a game or launcher process remains.
- Back up saves and important profile data before renaming or clearing configuration and cache folders.
- Record whether the failure occurs before the main menu, while loading a save, or only during play. Also note whether Vulkan works.
- Make one change at a time and test after each change. That prevents a successful fix from being hidden by several simultaneous changes.
How to fix bg3_dx11.exe errors
1. Switch between DirectX 11 and Vulkan
Open the Larian Launcher and select the alternate renderer. If DirectX 11 is selected, try Vulkan; if Vulkan is selected, try DirectX 11. Larian specifically recommends switching between the two to see whether the result changes.
This is both a workaround and a diagnostic test. If one renderer starts reliably and the other does not, the problem is more likely tied to that API, the graphics driver, or settings used only by that renderer. Keep the working renderer selected while you continue troubleshooting, but do not assume that either API is universally safer or faster on every computer.
2. Verify the game files
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Baldur’s Gate 3 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify Integrity of Game Files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and test the DirectX 11 launch.
GOG Galaxy
- Open your Baldur’s Gate 3 entry in GOG Galaxy.
- Open the game’s management menu.
- Choose Manage Installation → Verify/Repair.
- Allow the process to complete, then launch the game again.
Verification can restore bg3_dx11.exe and related files when an update or disk problem changed them. If files are repeatedly reported as altered after a successful repair, save that information for support rather than repeatedly downloading replacement executables.
3. Launch the executable from the bin folder
This test helps separate a launcher problem from a game-startup problem.

- Exit Steam or GOG Galaxy if Larian’s instructions require the launcher to be closed for the test.
- Open the installed game directory and then its
binfolder. - Right-click
bg3_dx11.exeand choose Run as administrator. - Observe whether the game reaches the menu or produces a different error.
Running directly is a diagnostic step, not a requirement to use the game this way permanently. If it works only when launched directly, check the launcher’s renderer selection, overlay settings, and shortcut configuration next.

4. Reduce graphics load and change display mode
If the game reaches a menu but crashes during rendering or loading, reduce the demands on the graphics path:
- Lower the resolution and overall graphics settings.
- Try Windowed or Fake Fullscreen instead of exclusive fullscreen.
- If you use a high-refresh-rate display, cap the frame rate at 60 frames per second and test again.
These changes are especially useful when the crash happens after the renderer initializes, when entering a demanding scene, or only on a high-refresh monitor. They do not prove that the graphics card is defective; they establish whether the current workload or display mode is involved.
5. Recreate the graphics configuration
A damaged setting can prevent the game from starting far enough to expose an in-game menu. Close the game, then open:

Start the game; it should create a new configuration file with default settings. If the new file resolves the error, reapply graphics changes gradually rather than restoring every old setting at once.

6. Clear the level cache and review old mods
With the game closed, inspect the Baldur’s Gate 3 profile and installation directories for the LevelCache folder. If cache corruption is suspected, clear the folder’s contents rather than deleting unrelated profile data. The game can rebuild the cache on the next launch.
Also review mod files in the local AppData profile and in the installation directories. A mod that worked before a game update can prevent bg3_dx11.exe from loading. Back up your mod list and saves, then temporarily remove or disable only the files you recognize as mod-related. Test an unmodded launch before adding anything back. If the game works unmodded, restore mods one at a time so the conflicting item can be identified.
7. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates and the current driver for your graphics hardware. A renderer crash that began after an operating-system or game update can result from a mismatch between the game and the installed driver. Restart Windows after updates complete, then test both renderers again.
If the error names a Visual C++ DLL, repair or reinstall the 64-bit Microsoft Visual C++ 2019/2022 Redistributable, as Larian advises. Match the remedy to the message: a missing or damaged VC runtime is different from a graphics-driver failure. Reboot after repairing the runtime and retry the launch.
8. Temporarily remove software interference
Close or temporarily disable software that injects an overlay, monitors hardware, changes GPU behavior, or filters game traffic. Larian lists antivirus and firewall components, graphics-tweaking and monitoring tools, and chat overlays among possible sources of launch and graphics problems.
Use a controlled test: close one category, launch the game, and then restore the protection or utility after testing. Do not leave security protection disabled as a permanent solution. If a particular overlay is responsible, turn off its game integration rather than abandoning the security product or utility altogether.

There is no official claim that one renderer is universally safer or faster. The practical choice depends on what happens on your hardware and driver. Use the following comparison as a troubleshooting framework:

Capture the Windows error details
- Press Windows, type Event Viewer, and open it.
- Go to Windows Logs → Application.
- Find the error at the time of the crash and record the faulting application, exception code, and faulting module.
The faulting module can distinguish a game executable failure from a system runtime or graphics component failure. Copy the exact text instead of paraphrasing it.
Generate a DirectX report
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - Allow the diagnostic tool to finish collecting information.
- Select Save All Information and keep the report with your troubleshooting notes.
The report records Windows and graphics details that support staff need when the problem cannot be reproduced from a short description.
Collect launcher and altered-file information
Keep the launcher logs, the result of Steam or GOG verification, and any altered-files report. Note the game version, Windows version, graphics-driver version, renderer selected, whether mods were installed, and the exact point of failure. Submit those details to Larian Support rather than sending an unknown executable as a replacement.
When should you stop troubleshooting?
Stop and escalate when verification repeatedly changes files, both renderers fail after a clean configuration reset, the error identifies a recurring system module, or the crash persists after updates and interference checks. Repeating the same verification or deleting more profile data is unlikely to add information. A reproducible description, Event Viewer entry, dxdiag report, launcher logs, and altered-files result give support a useful starting point.
