What backgrounddownload.exe normally is
BackgroundDownload.exe is commonly installed with the Microsoft Visual Studio Installer and its setup service. Its job is to obtain Visual Studio or extension update material in the background, so the installer can prepare downloads without waiting for you to open the development environment.

Microsoft support documents a scheduled task at Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > VisualStudio > Updates > BackgroundDownload. That task is enabled by default in the Microsoft support answer. A normal copy may be inside a Visual Studio Installer directory, or in a temporary directory containing this relative path:

The filename is not an authentication mechanism. Malware can use a familiar name, and a legitimate updater can be copied or launched from an unexpected location. Treat the name as a clue that requires verification, not as proof of safety.
Windows background-transfer technology is designed for long-running HTTP or HTTPS downloads. Transfers can continue while an application is suspended and can adapt to network and battery conditions. That behavior explains why a Visual Studio updater may run while Visual Studio itself is closed. It does not establish that every executable called BackgroundDownload.exe is legitimate.
Is BackgroundDownload.exe safe?
It is conditionally legitimate. Allow it to run only after the file, its signer, and its launch context agree with an installed Visual Studio product.

- The process opens from a Visual Studio Installer location or from the documented ServiceHub temporary path.
- The file’s digital signature is valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
- Visual Studio or the Visual Studio Installer is installed on the computer.
- The process was started by the expected VisualStudio Updates scheduled task.
- A current Microsoft Defender scan finds no threat in the executable or its containing folder.
Warning signs
- The executable is in an unrelated folder such as a random user-data directory, a browser-download folder, or a newly created directory with no Visual Studio files.
- The Digital Signatures tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the signer does not match Microsoft.
- Visual Studio is not installed, yet the process has persistent startup behavior.
- The file repeatedly recreates itself after removal or creates unrelated persistence mechanisms.
- Its network, CPU, or disk behavior has no understandable connection to Visual Studio updates.
Microsoft external staff have described the expected BackgroundDownload process as one that should not send malicious packets and that is launched automatically by Windows Task Scheduler. That statement applies to the authentic Visual Studio component, not to every file with the same name.
How to verify a copy before you trust it
- Locate the running file. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. On the Details tab, findBackgroundDownload.exe, right-click it, and choose Open file location. Record the complete path before closing the window. - Check the signature. Right-click the executable, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the listed signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft. A missing, invalid, or mismatched signer is a reason to stop and investigate.
- Confirm the parent product. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for a Visual Studio edition or Visual Studio Installer. The edition and version should make sense for the file’s location and update activity.
- Check the launch task. Open Start, search for Task Scheduler, and browse to
Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > VisualStudio > Updates. Select BackgroundDownload and inspect its Actions tab. The action should point to the executable you just verified, not to an unrelated copy. - Scan the file and folder. In File Explorer, right-click the executable or its containing folder and choose the Microsoft Defender scan option. If you cannot use a context-menu scan, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and run a custom scan of the location, or run a full scan.
- Do not whitelist it by name. Keep the file quarantined or blocked while you investigate if its path, signature, or launch task does not match the Visual Studio installation.
Why it may use CPU, disk, or bandwidth
A legitimate BackgroundDownload process normally appears when Visual Studio or one of its components has update material to obtain, stage, or verify. The background-transfer model allows work to continue while Visual Studio is closed and can adjust transfers according to network and battery conditions. Disk activity can come from writing temporary packages and update metadata; network activity can come from downloading those packages; CPU activity can come from checking, unpacking, or validating them.

There is no authoritative CPU-use, bandwidth, prevalence, or failure-rate statistic specific to BackgroundDownload.exe. A brief burst during an update is different from sustained activity caused by a stuck download, a damaged installation, repeated retries, or a suspicious copy. Use the file path, signature, Visual Studio version, and exact error or resource pattern to distinguish those cases.
Ways to reduce or stop legitimate activity
Prefer Visual Studio’s own update controls. They are easier to reverse and preserve the relationship between the installer and its update policy.

Change Visual Studio update preferences
Open Visual Studio and use Tools > Options > Environment > Extensions > Per user extensions. Clear Automatically check for updates if you do not want automatic checks for extensions installed for your account.
Repeat the change under Tools > Options > Environment > Extensions > All user extensions if you administer extensions for all users. In the same Environment area, open Product Updates and clear Automatically download updates when you want to prevent automatic product downloads.
These controls reduce automatic checking or downloading; they do not remove Visual Studio or prevent you from updating manually. Check the labels in your installed Visual Studio release because editions can expose slightly different options.

Disable the scheduled task
- Open Task Scheduler from the Start menu.
- Navigate to
Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > VisualStudio > Updates. - Right-click BackgroundDownload and choose Disable.
- Before changing it, open the task’s Triggers and Actions tabs and record the original settings. This makes later restoration easier.
- When you want automatic updates again, return to the same task and choose Enable.
Disabling the task can reduce background CPU, disk, or bandwidth activity, but it can also delay Visual Studio and extension security and bug-fix updates. Microsoft support specifically cautions against casually changing this task because it affects the update process.

Use the registry switch only as a deliberate administrative change
Microsoft support also identifies the following value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftVisualStudioSetupBackgroundDownloadDisabled
Set it to a DWORD value of 1 to disable background downloading. Registry edits affect the whole machine and can have consequences that are harder to diagnose than a Visual Studio setting or task change. Create a backup before editing, write down the original state, and avoid this method if you are not comfortable restoring the registry. Microsoft external staff warn that registry or task changes can affect Visual Studio updates.

How to fix BackgroundDownload.exe errors
1. Capture evidence before changing anything
Write down the exact error text, when it appears, the complete executable path, your Visual Studio edition and version, and the result of the Microsoft signature check. Also note whether the failure occurs at startup, during a Visual Studio update, after waking from sleep, or while the computer is on a restricted network. There is no single universal BackgroundDownload.exe error code or hash that applies to every Visual Studio release, so these details determine the correct branch.

2. Run a current Microsoft Defender scan
Update Defender definitions, then scan the executable and its containing folder. If the result is inconclusive, run a full scan. Microsoft describes malware as malicious software and recommends updated antivirus protection, trusted download sources, and Defender scans for unwanted software. Do not add an exclusion until the path and signature are verified.
Microsoft also distributes the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for prevalent malware through Windows Update and as a Microsoft download. It is an additional check, not a substitute for current antivirus protection or path verification.
3. Update or repair the Visual Studio installation
- Close Visual Studio and save your work.
- Open Visual Studio Installer from the Start menu.
- Find the installed Visual Studio instance and use the available Update action if an update is offered.
- If the updater still fails, use the available Repair action for that instance and follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows, then check whether the same error returns and whether the executable path and signature remain consistent.
Use the installer associated with your installed edition. Do not replace BackgroundDownload.exe or a related DLL with a file from a file-sharing site; a mismatched binary can create a second problem and can introduce malware.
4. Check Windows Update and network servicing
If the message indicates a connection, download, certificate, or servicing failure, first check that Windows Update is functioning and that a firewall or proxy is not blocking Visual Studio’s update traffic. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot and select the Windows Update troubleshooter where available.
For component-store or servicing problems, open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator and use Microsoft’s currently supported DISM repair procedure for your Windows version. A commonly used command is:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthAllow the operation to finish, restart Windows if requested, and retry the Visual Studio Installer. The command repairs the Windows component store; it does not authenticate a suspicious BackgroundDownload.exe, so keep the security checks separate.
5. Investigate an unexpected or recurring copy
- Disconnect the computer from untrusted networks if the file has an invalid signature or an unrelated path.
- Run Defender scans and preserve the file path and detection details.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by installation date, and remove software you do not recognize or that appeared when the problem began.
- Review Task Scheduler for newly created tasks that launch the suspicious file, but do not delete the documented VisualStudio task until you have confirmed which copy it targets.
- Submit the suspicious file through Microsoft’s unwanted-software reporting process if Defender or the path analysis indicates a potentially unwanted or malicious program.
If the executable is repeatedly recreated after removal, treat that persistence as evidence that another program or task is restoring it. Continue with a full security investigation instead of repeatedly deleting the visible file.

The process appears briefly and then exits
If the file is in an expected Visual Studio location, carries a valid Microsoft signature, and appears when the documented task runs, a short burst is consistent with an update check or transfer. Leave the task enabled unless the activity is disruptive; changing Visual Studio’s update preferences is the least invasive way to reduce it.
It consumes resources for a long time
Check whether Visual Studio Installer shows a pending update, whether the network is blocked by a proxy or firewall, and whether the installer can complete an update or repair. If the path or signature fails verification, stop treating the event as a normal update and scan it as suspicious.
It starts even though Visual Studio is not installed
Locate the file, inspect its signature, and review the scheduled task and installed-app list. An orphaned installer component may need cleanup, but an unrelated path or invalid signer requires Defender scanning and removal of untrusted software before any cleanup.
An error appears after disabling the task
Re-enable Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > VisualStudio > Updates > BackgroundDownload, then use Visual Studio Installer’s Update or Repair action. A disabled task can leave required product or extension updates pending, so restore the original state before diagnosing a separate installer failure.
When to seek further help
- Keep the exact error message, path, signature result, Visual Studio version, and Defender result together when contacting Microsoft support or an administrator.
- Do not provide a suspicious executable with an exclusion or administrator trust merely because its filename is familiar.
- If a repair changes the path or creates a new signed copy, repeat the location and signature checks rather than assuming the new file is equivalent.
- After a successful repair, decide whether automatic updates should remain enabled; if you disabled them for troubleshooting, restore the task or settings so security and bug-fix updates are not silently missed.

BackgroundDownload.exe is usually the Visual Studio background updater when its path, Microsoft signature, installed product, and VisualStudio Updates task all line up. Verify those four points before allowing access. For a legitimate copy, adjust Visual Studio’s update preferences first; disable the scheduled task only when you accept delayed updates, and treat the registry value as an advanced, backed-up change. For errors, preserve the evidence, scan with Defender, update or repair through Visual Studio Installer, check Windows Update and network servicing, and investigate any copy that fails the path or signature test.
