avpm.exe is not a standard Windows system file. The name is associated with some antivirus installations—one process reference lists C:Program FilesKaspersky Labsavpm.exe—but malware can use the same filename to look legitimate. The filename alone cannot prove that it is safe. Check its complete path, digital signature, parent antivirus product and scan results before keeping, repairing or removing it.
What avpm.exe is—and why the name is ambiguous
Windows does not require a core component named avpm.exe. It may also appear as avpM.exe, because Windows process listings can display capitalization differently. A process reference associates the name with Kaspersky Anti-Virus and gives C:Program FilesKaspersky Labsavpm.exe as an example location. That association is not proof that every copy is legitimate: malware can be given a familiar executable name.

Think of avpm.exe as a clue to investigate, not a diagnosis. A legitimate copy normally belongs to an installed security product, has a matching publisher signature and passes a malware scan. A copy in a temporary, user-profile or otherwise unrelated folder, an unsigned copy, or one detected by security software deserves immediate attention.

There is no safe-or-dangerous answer based on the filename alone. Use all of the following evidence together:

Microsoft explains that verifying a signature confirms that a file has not been altered since signing and that it comes from the signer. A valid signature is useful evidence, but it should still match the product and path you expect; a malicious file can be unsigned, and a compromised signing process is not ruled out by the filename.
Find the exact avpm.exe file before changing anything
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Find avpm.exe or avpM.exe in the process list. Right-click it and choose Open file location. Copy or write down the complete path and the folder name.
- Close the folder without deleting the file. In File Explorer, right-click the executable, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer matches the antivirus product you recognize.
If Task Manager shows several similarly named processes, inspect each path. Do not assume that the first result represents every copy on the computer.
Scan avpm.exe safely
Scan the individual file
In File Explorer, right-click the identified executable and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender (the wording can vary slightly by Windows release). Let the scan complete. Do not open or run a suspicious copy merely to test it.

Run a full scan
For a broader check, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan, and start it. A full scan checks every file and program on the device, so it can take considerably longer than a single-file scan. Keep the computer powered on and avoid interrupting the scan.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline when persistence is possible
If the file returns after removal, launches before normal security tools, or continues to trigger warnings, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first. Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment, where Defender scans outside the normal Windows kernel. That trusted environment makes it harder for persistent malware to hide. The computer restarts again after the scan; review the result in Windows Security.
What to do with the result
Expected folder, matching signature and clean scans
Keep the file if it belongs to the antivirus product you installed, its signature is valid and scans are clean. If it still produces errors, update or repair that parent antivirus product rather than replacing the executable with a download from an EXE website. Security programs often depend on several services and shared files, so swapping one executable can make the installation less reliable.

Unexpected folder, unsigned file or security detection
Do not launch the file or attempt to “fix” it by downloading another copy. Use Microsoft Defender’s quarantine or removal action, disconnect from sensitive accounts if you suspect an active compromise, and run a Full scan followed by Microsoft Defender Offline when appropriate. If the file is not recognized by your security tools, submit it through the vendor’s official malware-analysis channel; an analysis request is safer than uploading it to an unknown file site.

Errors can come from a damaged update, missing shared files, an incomplete uninstall or a conflict between security products. Identify the parent product from the file path and signature, then use that vendor’s official support page, repair option or uninstall utility.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) and locate the matching antivirus product.
- If the product offers Modify, Repair or an equivalent maintenance option, close other programs and run it.
- Restart Windows and test whether the avpm.exe error returns.
- If repair fails, download the vendor’s current installer or removal utility from the vendor’s official account or support page. Avoid third-party executable repositories.
- Uninstall only the identified product, restart when requested, and reinstall the current release. Keep another reputable real-time protection active while the replacement is installed; do not run multiple real-time antivirus engines together unless the vendors specifically support that arrangement.
When a normal uninstall leaves a broken installation, some vendors document a Safe Mode cleanup. For example, Avira’s fallback procedure uses Safe Mode, removal of residual Avira directories identified by its instructions, and reinstallation from the user’s account. Do not delete folders merely because their names look similar: remove only directories the product’s own cleanup instructions identify.

Repair Windows components if errors remain
If the parent antivirus is repaired or removed and Windows still reports missing, corrupt or incompatible components, use Microsoft’s servicing sequence. Open Command Prompt as administrator by searching for it, right-clicking Command Prompt, and choosing Run as administrator. Run DISM first, then System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannowWait for each command to finish. Microsoft instructs users to let verification reach 100 percent before interpreting the SFC result. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source; running SFC first can leave it without the files it needs. Restart Windows after both commands and test the application that previously generated the error.
Common avpm.exe error patterns and the right response
“avpm.exe has stopped working” or an application crash
- Record whether the error began immediately after an antivirus or Windows update.
- Check the path and signature, then run an individual and Full scan.
- Repair or reinstall the owning antivirus product from its official source.
- Run DISM followed by SFC if other Windows programs also report damaged components.
“avpm.exe not found”
This can mean a shortcut, service or antivirus entry still points to a file removed during an incomplete uninstall. Do not download a replacement executable. Remove the orphaned product using its official cleanup tool, restart, and install a supported current version if you still need that antivirus.
Repeated high CPU, memory or disk activity
First identify whether the activity belongs to a legitimate antivirus scan or update. Check the product’s scan history and update status, allow a scheduled scan to finish, and install the vendor’s current release. If the path is unexpected or scans detect a threat, treat the activity as a possible security incident rather than merely a performance problem.
Errors that return after every restart
Persistence can indicate a damaged service, a failed uninstall or malware. Run Microsoft Defender Offline, review startup and installed-app entries for the identified product, and use the product vendor’s cleanup process. If the file remains suspicious after those steps, preserve the path, signature details and scan result for the vendor’s support or malware-analysis team.
Can you delete avpm.exe?
Do not delete it manually while the parent antivirus is installed. Removing one executable can disable protection, break updates or leave services pointing to a missing file. If the file is confirmed malicious, let Microsoft Defender quarantine or remove it, then follow the security product’s cleanup guidance. If it is legitimate but damaged, repair or reinstall the parent product. Manual deletion is appropriate only when the vendor’s documented removal procedure specifically instructs it and the associated product has been uninstalled.
How to compare competing explanations
When the cause is unclear, write down the evidence instead of guessing. Compare each hypothesis—legitimate but damaged antivirus component, incomplete uninstall, Windows component corruption or masquerading malware—against these six facts:
- the complete file path;
- the digital signer and signature status;
- the parent antivirus product;
- the result of an individual and Full scan;
- whether the first error followed an update; and
- whether the error survives an official uninstall and reinstall.
A normal product path, matching valid signature and clean scans favor repair. An unexpected path, signer mismatch or detection favors quarantine and Offline scanning. If malware is excluded but the error survives product repair, Windows servicing with DISM and SFC becomes the next sensible branch.
What not to do
- Do not trust the filename or a familiar-looking icon as proof of safety.
- Do not download
avpm.exefrom an EXE repository to replace a missing file. - Do not stop or delete a legitimate antivirus process before identifying its owner and planning replacement protection.
- Do not run random registry cleaners or delete similarly named folders.
- Do not ignore a detection simply because another copy appears in a normal antivirus directory.

avpm.exe is safe only when its path, signer, parent antivirus installation and scan results agree. Investigate those details first, scan before deleting, use Microsoft Defender Offline for possible persistence, repair or reinstall the owning security product, and run DISM before SFC when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
