Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallavguard.exe is a filename historically associated with AVG antivirus, but the name alone cannot prove that a copy is legitimate. To judge a particular process, check its complete file path, digital signature, installed antivirus product, and a scan result. A copy in an unexpected folder, or one with a missing or invalid signature, deserves investigation.
Most avguard.exe failures are tied to limited permissions, corrupted or missing antivirus files, damaged registry entries, or an incomplete installer. The safest repair is to verify the installation, restart when requested, use the vendor’s official uninstall utility if needed, remove only documented leftovers, reboot, and reinstall a current package from Avast or AVG.

What avguard.exe is
A filename linked to AVG antivirus
AVG historically used the name avguard.exe for an antivirus guard component. The executable can therefore appear as part of an AVG installation, and related Avast and AVG products may place program and driver components in vendor-controlled directories. The filename is only an identifier, not an authenticity certificate.
Why the name is not enough
Windows allows files with the same name to exist in different folders. A malicious or unrelated program could use a familiar filename. There is no single universal avguard.exe path or hash that can be guaranteed for every AVG or Avast edition and release. Treat the path, signer, product installation, and scan result as a set of evidence rather than relying on the name alone.

How to check whether a copy is safe
Use the following checks on the exact process that Windows is reporting. Do not download a replacement executable from a random DLL-fix site.
1. Open the process location
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find
avguard.exein the process list. If it is not visible, expand the relevant antivirus entry or use the process details view. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location.
- Record the complete path before closing the window. A vendor directory is more plausible than a temporary folder, a user-download folder, or an unrelated system location.
AVG business documentation shows vendor program and driver components under paths such as C:Program FilesAvast SoftwareAvast and Windows driver directories. That is useful context, not a promise that every consumer build uses exactly that path. Product edition, architecture, and installation history can change the location.
2. Check the digital signature
- In the file’s folder, right-click
avguard.exeand select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer name and signature status. Avast’s installer guidance says legitimate setup files should show one or two signatures from AVAST Software s.r.o..
- Open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. A missing, invalid, or unexpected signer is a reason to stop and investigate the specific file.
A valid signature does not, by itself, prove that the entire computer is clean; it makes the file’s claimed publisher more plausible. An unsigned file in an unexpected location should not be “fixed” by replacing it manually.
3. Scan the file
Right-click the executable and use the scan option supplied by Windows Security or your installed antivirus. Compare the result with the product’s current support guidance. If the scanner flags the file, quarantine or remove it according to that product’s instructions and investigate why it was present. Do not restore a detected file merely because its name resembles an antivirus component.
4. Confirm that an antivirus product is actually installed
Open Windows Settings, go to Apps, and review Installed apps (the label can vary slightly by Windows release). Look for the AVG or Avast product that should own the process. If no such product is installed, an avguard.exe process is harder to explain and should be treated cautiously.

Why avguard.exe errors happen
Limited or inconsistent permissions
Avast Support describes limited or inconsistent permissions to write to disk, system folders, or the Windows registry as a common reason that setup cannot install, update, delete, or overwrite program files and registry entries. A failed update can leave a component partly changed, so later starts may report that a file is missing or cannot be loaded.
"This is usually caused by limited or inconsistent permissions to write to disk, system folders, or Windows registry, which prevents Avast Setup from installing, updating, deleting, or overwriting some of its program files and/or registry entries." — Avast Support, troubleshooting article, modified 2026-07-10.

Corrupted or missing application files
An interrupted update, storage problem, or damaged installation can make the guard component incomplete. The visible symptom may be a startup failure, a protection component that will not enable, or a message that a required file cannot be found.
Damaged registry entries
Antivirus setup relies on registry entries to register services, components, and update information. If those entries are damaged or inconsistent, the installed product may appear in Windows while its protection components fail to start.
Incomplete or corrupted setup files
Avast Support states that an installation file producing Package Broken or Not a Valid Win32 Application may be corrupted or incomplete. Reusing the same damaged installer can reproduce the error, so obtain a fresh current installer from the official Avast or AVG source.

Repair or reinstall: choose the safer route
| Situation | Best next step | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The product appears in Windows Apps, protection is enabled, and the message occurred once after an update | Restart Windows and check the product again | A pending restart can be required to finish an update. |
| The product appears installed, but protection components repeatedly stop or fail to start | Use the vendor’s official uninstall utility, reboot, then reinstall | Repeated component failures suggest damaged or incomplete files rather than a one-time notification. |
| Files are missing, setup reports Package Broken, or the installer says Not a Valid Win32 Application | Discard the installer, download a fresh official package, and reinstall | The setup file itself may be incomplete or corrupted. |
| The executable has an unexpected path or no valid Avast Software s.r.o. signature | Stop before repairing and scan/investigate the file | A reinstall should not be used to legitimize an unrelated executable. |
Avast component cleanup specifically mentions aswNdis*.* |
Follow the vendor’s Safe Mode procedure exactly | Those files should be removed only when the official procedure calls for it. |
Full manual fix sequence
Step 1: Capture the exact symptom
Write down the complete error text, when it appears, and whether it happens at sign-in, during an update, or when opening the antivirus interface. Note whether Windows reports high CPU usage, a stopped protection component, or a setup error. This record helps you choose between a restart and a full reinstall and prevents you from deleting the wrong file.
Step 2: Check product status and updates
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and confirm that the expected AVG or Avast product is listed.
- Open the antivirus interface and check whether its protection components are enabled and whether an update is pending.
- If the product requests a restart, save your work and restart Windows. Do not repeatedly kill the process in Task Manager; that can leave an update unfinished.
After Windows starts again, check the protection status and whether the original message returns. If the component works normally, the issue may have been a pending update transition. If it fails again, continue with the clean reinstall path.
Step 3: Verify the executable before deleting anything
Repeat the Task Manager location check and the Properties > Digital Signatures check described earlier. Compare the path with the installed product and scan the file. Do not assume that an error message makes every file named avguard.exe safe to remove.
Step 4: Obtain the official uninstall utility
When the product remains broken, use the uninstall utility supplied by the installed vendor rather than deleting the program folder manually. Official uninstall tools are designed to remove registered components that ordinary app removal can leave behind. Download the utility from the official Avast or AVG support channel, and use the version that matches the product you installed.
Step 5: Run the uninstall and restart
- Close open applications and save your work.
- Run the vendor’s uninstall utility and follow its product-selection and removal prompts.
- Allow the utility to complete; do not interrupt it while it is removing services, drivers, or registry entries.
- Restart Windows even if the utility does not appear to require it.
If the utility cannot run in normal Windows, follow the vendor’s documented Safe Mode instructions. Do not improvise by deleting services or registry keys.

Step 6: Remove only documented leftovers
After rebooting, inspect the vendor locations named in the official cleanup procedure. Depending on architecture and product, documented locations can include:
C:Program Files (x86)Avast SoftwareC:ProgramDataAvast Software- Corresponding AVG folders identified by the vendor’s instructions
Delete a leftover folder only when the official procedure identifies it and the uninstall has completed. Do not remove similarly named folders belonging to another product, and do not erase arbitrary files from C:Windows.
Step 7: Handle aswNdis*.* files only when instructed
For certain Avast component failures, the vendor’s Safe Mode procedure may instruct you to remove aswNdis*.* files from C:WindowsSystem32DriverStore. This is a specialized step. Use it only when the current official procedure explicitly calls for it, and follow the stated Safe Mode and reboot order. Do not search DriverStore and delete files simply because their names look related to Avast.
Step 8: Reinstall from a fresh official package
- Download the current AVG or Avast installer from the vendor’s official site after the old installation has been removed.
- If Windows or the installer reports Package Broken or Not a Valid Win32 Application, discard that file and download it again rather than repeatedly launching it.
- Run the installer and allow it to complete without shutting down Windows or interrupting the network connection.
- Restart if requested.
A clean download matters because an incomplete setup package can recreate the same error even after a successful uninstall.

Step 9: Verify protection after reinstall
Open the product, confirm that its protection components are enabled, and check that the update status is current. In Task Manager, verify that any avguard.exe process now points to the newly installed vendor directory. Open Properties and confirm the expected digital signature. Finally, run a scan with Windows Security or the installed antivirus if the product recommends one.

What to do for specific messages and symptoms
"Package Broken"
Treat this as an installer-integrity problem first. Delete or set aside the downloaded setup file, obtain a fresh copy from the official vendor source, and retry. If the new installer fails in the same way, use the vendor’s uninstall utility to remove remnants of the earlier installation, restart, and then retry with the fresh package.
"Not a Valid Win32 Application"
Avast Support says this message can indicate a corrupted or incomplete setup file. Do not rename the file, download a replacement DLL, or force it to run with compatibility settings as a substitute for obtaining a complete installer. Download a new official package and continue with the clean reinstall sequence if necessary.
The process will not start or protection is disabled
First check whether Windows is waiting for a restart after an update. If the failure persists, permissions, missing files, or damaged registry entries are plausible causes documented by Avast and AVG support. Use the official uninstall utility, reboot, perform only documented cleanup, and reinstall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHigh CPU usage attributed to avguard.exe
Record when the usage occurs and whether it coincides with an update or scan. Verify the file path and signature before treating it as an antivirus process. If usage remains abnormal after a restart and current update, reinstall the product rather than ending the process repeatedly. A process in an unexpected folder or without a valid publisher signature should be scanned and investigated separately.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the filename alone: avguard.exe is not proof of an AVG installation.
- Deleting the executable manually: this can leave services, drivers, registry entries, and protection components inconsistent.
- Removing DriverStore files without instructions: delete
aswNdis*.*only in the vendor’s specified Safe Mode procedure. - Using random DLL-download sites: they do not establish that a replacement matches your product version or is safe.
- Using an old installer repeatedly: an incomplete package can keep producing the same setup error.
- Ignoring architecture differences: Avast and AVG may use different locations under
Program Files,Program Files (x86), andProgramData. - Assuming a valid signature settles every question: verify the path, installed product, and scan result as well.
When to stop and seek official help
Escalate through Avast or AVG support when the uninstall utility fails, the product cannot be removed after the documented procedure, a signature is invalid, or the same failure returns immediately after a clean reinstall. Include the exact error text, Windows edition, product name, installation path, signature status, and the steps already completed. Do not send an executable to an unverified third party or follow instructions that require deleting unrelated system files.
