Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallautochk.exe is a legitimate Windows startup checker. Microsoft describes it as a version of chkdsk that runs before Windows starts on NTFS disks. It is normally invoked automatically when Windows needs to check a boot volume, cannot lock a volume for an online check, or sees that a volume is marked “dirty.” It is not a program you normally open yourself.
A single check after an improper shutdown can be expected. A scan that appears at every startup means Windows is still detecting a file-system, storage, or shutdown condition that needs diagnosis. The safe response is to use the built-in chkdsk and chkntfs tools, not to download a replacement autochk.exe from an unofficial website.

What autochk.exe does
Autocheck runs in the early startup phase, before the normal Windows desktop loads. Microsoft’s documentation defines it as “a version of chkdsk that runs only on NTFS disks and only before Windows Server starts.” In practical Windows troubleshooting, that means it is the startup mechanism that performs a file-system check when an NTFS volume needs to be examined before Windows can use it normally.

When Windows invokes it
Microsoft identifies three common triggers:
- You request
chkdskon the boot volume. Because Windows is using that volume, the complete operation is scheduled for the next restart. chkdskcannot obtain exclusive use of a volume while Windows is running.- The volume is flagged as dirty, indicating that Windows believes file-system work is pending or that the previous state was not clean.
The dirty flag is a condition to investigate, not proof that the physical drive has failed. It can be associated with an interrupted write, an improper shutdown, logical file-system errors, or a storage problem. Repeated checks mean the condition is being detected again or is not being repaired successfully.
Is autochk.exe safe?
A normal autochk invocation during Windows startup is expected behavior according to Microsoft’s description. The filename alone does not provide a universal malware determination, however. Malicious software can use familiar filenames, and a damaged or replaced system file can produce confusing symptoms.
Check the file’s location and signature
On a standard Windows installation, the genuine file is normally in a Windows system directory such as C:WindowsSystem32. Do not treat that path as a complete authenticity test: drive letters and Windows installation paths can differ, and a file can be copied elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open File Explorer and locate the reported
autochk.exe. - Right-click it, choose Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Inspect the signer and the signature status. An invalid, missing, or unexpected signature deserves further investigation.
- Run a current security scan if the file is outside the Windows system locations or your security software flags it.
Do not replace the file by downloading an executable from a random “DLL” or driver site. An unofficial copy may be modified, incompatible with your Windows installation, or bundled with unwanted software. If you suspect corruption, use Windows recovery and system-repair methods rather than an untrusted download.
What the “Scanning and repairing drive” message means
The startup message usually indicates that a check has been scheduled for a volume, often the Windows boot volume. Autocheck may run before the login screen, so the computer can appear stuck even though it is processing file-system metadata. A status-only check is different from a repair: a repair can take much longer, and a deeper scan for bad sectors can take substantially longer still.
Keep the computer connected to reliable power while a repair is running. Avoid repeatedly forcing power-off during an active check, because interrupting storage operations can leave the underlying condition unresolved. If the percentage does not move for an unusually long period, note the exact message and determine whether the drive is responding before deciding on a forced restart.

Prepare before changing startup checks
Protect important files before running repeated repairs. Copy irreplaceable documents to another disk or a trusted backup service if Windows still starts. A check can correct logical errors, but it cannot restore data that has already become unreadable. If the drive is making unusual mechanical noises, disappearing from firmware, or producing frequent read errors, prioritize data recovery and hardware evaluation over repeated repair attempts.

The commands below require an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal. Sign in with an account that belongs to the local Administrators group, or use an equivalent elevation method. Replace C: with the letter of the volume you actually need to examine.
Step-by-step: diagnose and repair the volume
1. Open an elevated terminal
- Open the Start menu and type Windows Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
If Windows cannot reach the desktop, start from Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Command Prompt. Recovery may assign different letters to partitions, so verify the Windows volume before substituting a letter in the commands.
2. Run a status-only check
Start with the least disruptive command:
chkdsk C:
This checks the volume and reports its condition without requesting logical repairs. Read the output carefully and record whether Windows reports errors, a dirty volume, or unreadable areas.
3. Repair logical file-system errors
If the status check reports errors, run:
chkdsk C: /f
The /f option tells chkdsk to fix logical errors. On a system volume that is in use, Windows normally asks whether to schedule the operation for the next restart. Type Y when prompted, restart, and allow the offline check to finish.

chkdsk C: /r
The /r operation includes the logical repair work and performs a deeper scan for bad sectors with an attempt to recover readable information. It can take substantially longer than a status check, especially on a large or slow disk. Do not choose it merely because the startup message is inconvenient; use it when the symptoms or status output justify a deeper examination.
5. Interpret the result
Microsoft documents these chkdsk exit-code meanings:
| Exit code | Meaning | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | No errors were found. | If autochk still repeats, inspect startup-check configuration and look for a separate shutdown or storage issue. |
| 1 | Errors were found and fixed. | Restart normally and observe whether the check returns. |
| 2 | Cleanup was performed, or cleanup was not requested. | Review the complete command output and run the appropriate repair option if the volume remains problematic. |
| 3 | The disk could not be checked, or errors were not fixed. | Back up data, repeat diagnosis from recovery if necessary, and consider a failing storage device or an unresolved file-system problem. |
The exit code is only a summary. Keep the full output, including any references to bad sectors, indexes, security descriptors, or unreadable files, because those details determine the next step.

Inspect and configure startup checking with chkntfs
Autocheck cannot be run directly from the command line. Microsoft identifies chkntfs as the supported tool for displaying and configuring startup-check behavior.
Display the current status
In an elevated terminal, run:
chkntfs C:
This lets you inspect how Windows treats the specified volume for startup checking. You can also query the volumes shown by your installation to identify which one is being checked.

chkntfs /x C:
Exclusion is a configuration change, not a repair. It hides the automatic check even if the underlying volume condition remains. Use it only when you understand why the check is being triggered and have another plan for diagnosing the volume. If a drive is repeatedly marked dirty, excluding it can postpone discovery of a real file-system or hardware problem.
Change the startup countdown
The /t option changes the countdown delay before an automatic check:
chkntfs /t:30
The value is in seconds. Microsoft documents a maximum delay of 259,200 seconds, which is three days. A zero-second countdown prevents cancellation of a potentially time-consuming automatic file check, so do not set it to zero simply to make the message disappear. A longer countdown can be useful when you need time to cancel a check for a documented operational reason, but it does not correct the volume.
Online checks, restart-time checks, and persistent settings
These choices solve different problems:
| Situation | Typical action | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You want information without changing the volume | chkdsk C: |
Fastest and least disruptive, but it does not repair errors. |
| Logical errors are reported | chkdsk C: /f |
Repairs the file system; the boot volume normally requires a restart. |
| Bad sectors or unreadable data are suspected | chkdsk C: /r |
Most extensive and slowest option; preserve data first. |
| The volume is in use and cannot be locked | Schedule the check for restart | Windows runs it offline before startup completes. |
| You need to change startup behavior | chkntfs |
Persistent configuration can hide symptoms if used instead of repair. |
| You only want to suppress a volume’s automatic check | chkntfs /x |
Suppresses the check; it does not fix the volume. |
Why autochk runs at every startup
Recurring checks generally indicate that Windows continues to see a condition requiring attention. Common categories include:
- File-system errors remain. A status-only check does not repair them, or the repair could not complete.
- The volume is repeatedly marked dirty. An interrupted shutdown, unstable power, or an application that fails while writing can leave work pending.
- The storage device is unreliable. Bad sectors, connection problems, firmware issues, or a failing drive can cause repairs to return.
- The wrong volume is being diagnosed. Startup checks can involve a volume other than the one you first expected, especially on systems with multiple disks or recovery partitions.
- Startup configuration is masking rather than solving the issue. An exclusion or countdown change can alter what you see without changing the volume’s health.
After a successful chkdsk C: /f or /r run, restart normally and observe the next few boots. If the check returns, do not keep repeating the same command indefinitely. Compare the complete reports, check whether the same volume is named each time, and investigate storage and shutdown behavior.

What to do when the check cannot finish
If Windows still boots
Back up important data first. Run the status check again from an elevated terminal and note the exact error. If /f reports that it cannot lock the volume, accept the restart-time schedule rather than trying to force an online repair. If /r repeatedly fails or reports unreadable areas, treat the storage device as suspect and arrange a replacement or professional assessment after securing your data.
Best Value
If Windows will not boot
Enter Windows Recovery Environment and open Command Prompt. Identify the Windows partition because the recovery environment may not call it C:. Run a status check first, then use chkdsk <letter>: /f when logical repair is appropriate. If the command reports that the disk cannot be checked or errors remain unfixed, preserve the output and avoid repeatedly writing to a potentially failing drive.
If the message appears frozen
Check whether the storage-activity indicator changes and whether the displayed percentage advances over time. A large volume or a deep /r scan can take a long time. If there is no evidence of progress and the computer is unresponsive, document the screen, restart only when necessary, and perform the next diagnosis from recovery with a backup or data-recovery plan in place.
How to handle a missing or suspicious autochk.exe
A message saying that autochk.exe is missing, cannot be found, or cannot start is different from a normal startup scan. First confirm the exact path and spelling shown by Windows. Check the file’s properties and digital signature, then run an up-to-date security scan if its location or signature is unexpected.
Do not download a replacement executable from an unofficial source. Use Windows recovery and supported system-repair procedures, and keep installation or recovery media available if Windows cannot start. If security software identifies the file as malicious, follow that product’s quarantine and incident-recovery guidance rather than restoring an unverified copy.
When to stop troubleshooting and replace the drive
Repeated dirty-volume flags, growing numbers of unreadable sectors, failed repairs, disappearing volumes, or frequent read errors point beyond a simple startup setting. The priority order is:
- Make a current backup or image while the drive remains readable.
- Record
chkdskoutput and any storage or firmware diagnostics available from the device manufacturer. - Check physical connections and power for a desktop or externally connected drive, without opening a sealed device.
- Replace or professionally assess the storage device if errors recur after a completed repair.
A successful repair does not prove that a physically deteriorating disk is healthy. Conversely, a one-time check that completes with exit code 0 does not by itself indicate malware or a defective Windows installation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not run or replace
autochk.exedirectly; usechkdskfor volume work andchkntfsfor startup configuration. - Do not assume that suppressing the countdown or excluding a volume repaired anything.
- Do not set the countdown to zero merely to hide the message; Microsoft warns that this removes the opportunity to cancel a potentially lengthy check.
- Do not run the deepest scan repeatedly without backing up first.
- Do not rely on the filename alone to judge whether a copy of
autochk.exeis trustworthy. - Do not interrupt a repair casually; keep power stable and allow reasonable time for the selected operation.
If you prefer an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.
The Bottom Line
Autocheck is normally a legitimate Windows startup component. Diagnose recurring runs with an elevated chkdsk check, repair with /f or use /r when a deeper bad-sector scan is justified, and use chkntfs only to understand or deliberately change startup behavior. Excluding a volume hides the check; it does not solve the condition that keeps causing it.
